DÉFENSE DES CONSTITUTIONS AMÉRICAINES, OU DE LA NÉCESSITÉ D'UNE BALANCE DANS LES POUVOIRS D'UN GOUVERNEMENT LIBRE

Paris, 1792. Two volumes. [4],xxiv,547; [2],503pp. Half title in each volume. Bound in original wrappers of yellow printer's wastepaper, with other wastepaper used as the inner wrapper; original printed paper labels. Wrappers lightly stained. An occasional fox mark, else internally pristine. A fine set, in original, completely unsophisticated condition, untrimmed and unopened. The first French edition, following London and Philadelphia editions of 1787, of one of the most important and widely read of the many writings of John Adams. This French edition was issued at a crucial moment in that country's history, as the Revolution was moving in a more radical direction. In 1792 the revolutionaries in the French Assembly stripped King Louis XVI of his power and declared him a prisoner of the nation. They called together the "Convention," initially created to draft a new constitution to replace that of 1791, but eventually becoming a provisional revolutionary government. This work by Adams, explaining and defending the principles of the American Constitution, would have been a timely and popular book indeed. At the time Adams wrote this work he was serving as the first United States ambassador in England, an uncomfortable position for a recent rebel, but he was ever ready to argue the American point of view. Here he forcibly states the principles on which he perceived the United States to be founded. The book was popular and went through numerous editions in the United States and London. Its issuance as the Federal Constitutional Convention was assembling added to its popularity and resulted in several American reprintings, and according to the DAB, "its timeliness gave it vogue." Later, Adams' detractors sought to find in it a hidden desire for a monarchy. A detailed exposition of Adams' political principles. An absolutely beautiful set, in original, untouched condition.         The First Principles of Chemistry

      - Engraved plate serving as the frontis. xxxi, 546, [4] pp. 8vo, fine cont. calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: G.G.J. & J. Robinson, 1792. "Second edition, with Improvements" (1st ed.: 1790); this is a wonderfully fresh copy in fine contemporary condition. Nicholson (1753-1815), translator of Fourcroy and Chaptal, and editor of the first general scientific periodical in England published independently of the academics, was one of the important British figures in the new chemical movement. "The author produced a text in which he 'attempted to keep clear of every system' with regard to nomenclature and theory. Since he believed the 'antiphlogistic hypothesis equally probable with the modified system of Stahl' he explains both. The text is divided into two Books, I. General Chemistry includes heat, construction of thermometers, combustion, methods of making experiments with gases, an account of balances and elective attractions; II. includes general principles of bodies, acids, metals, mineral combustibles, vegetable and animal products. The useful treatment in I. of thermometers and balances is not found in many texts."Cole, p. 402(describing the 1st ed.). Very fine copy. 18th century engraved armorial bookplate of "Sr Rd Bempde Johnstone, Bart." Cole 977"In the second edition the author has revised the work to some extent and inserted new discoveries." Partington, IV, p. 19-20. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Theory of Moral Sentiments and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

London: A. Strahan & T. Cadell, 1792-93. Octavo, 5 volumes. Bound in contemporary uniform diced russian calf, marbled edges, marbled endpapers, contemporary bookplates. In near fine condition. A nice early set of Adam Smith's The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations, seldom found bound in a contemporary binding and with both works. Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. "Adam Smith's enormous authority resides, in the end, in the same property that we discover in Marx: not in any ideology, but in an effort to see to the bottom of things" (Robert L. Heilbroner).

Coltivazione e Governo del Lino Marzuolo

      - Fine engraved title & 12 finely engraved plates. 1 p.l., viii, 80 pp. Large 4to, orig. semi-stiff boards, many edges uncut. Vicenza: D. Bardella, 1792. First edition of this handsomely illustrated work which describes the cultivation of the land to grow flax, and the entire process - harvesting, retting, breaking, scutching, cleaning, spinning, weaving, and bleaching - of flax to manufacture linen. The twelve plates depict methods of cultivation and processing of flax, including the tools employed and workers in contemporary dress. Flax was, without any competitor, the most important of all vegetable fibers until the close of the 18th century when cotton took its place as the supreme vegetable fiber of commerce. Trecco (1747-1830), abbot at the cathedral at Vicenza, was greatly interested in improving the agricultural methods used in Italy. His tireless efforts won him considerable local fame. Fine and handsome copy in original state. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Thomas Paine (1738-1809) was one of the most important political thinkers during the Age of Revolution. His writings even attacked the Constitution of England and referred to George III as "the royal brute of England." However, his Rights of Man, Part Second earned him trial for seditious libel, which he was found guilty of. This is one of the earliest accounts of the trial of Thomas Paine for his publication of Part II of the Rights of Man. Nice copy in an attractive binding. DAB.

The English Entomologist, exhibiting all the Coleopterous Insects found in England ... Entomologist Anglois ouvrage ou l'on a rassemble tous les Insectes Coleopteres qui se trouvent en Angleterre ... [Signed copy]

London: W. Bulmer / Shakspeare Press, 1792. [iv], 33; [iv], 41, [iv], 2 engraved titles, 2 engraved plates of medals, 42 fine hand-col stipple engravings. 4to. HB. Fine copy bound in cont. half morocco, marbled boards + endpapers, raised bands to spine, gilt dec. compartments, aeg. Some inoffensive discolouration to leather on rear cover. Browning/offsetting to engraved titles; light spotting to rear endpapers, else clean. Wide margins (340x280mm). Book-plate of James Stewart of Alltyrodyn. English dedication signed by Thomas Martyn.. English and French text bound together. Very scarce. [Nissen 2725/2726; Horn-Schenkling 14665]Thomas Martyn (1735-1825) was a natural history illustrator and pamphleteer, said to be a native of Coventry, Warwickshire (Nichols, 8.432). Martyn developed a talent for coloured depictions of insects and shells. He purchased shells brought back from Cook's third voyage, and produced his splendid 'Universal Conchologist' (1784-7), the greatest of all books on shells. Turning to insects, Martyn produced his 'English Entomologist' (1792), followed by 'Aranei, or, A Natural History of Spiders' (1793), a quarto in two parts. It included much of Eleazar Albin's well-known work on English spiders, Martyn having purchased Albin's drawings at the sale of the dowager duchess of Portland's museum. 'Psyche: Figures of Non-Lepidopterous Insects' (1797) was probably produced privately and only about ten sets of its thirty-two stipple engravings are known to have been published. His only venture into botany, 'Figures of Plants' (1795), consisted of forty-three coloured plates without text or captions. Since Martyn's illustrations were hand-coloured he needed the assistance of professional artists, but, finding that miniaturists were unwilling to interrupt their normal work to paint shells and insects, he decided to recruit his own workforce and train boys to paint in a uniform style. His first boy joined him about 1779; others followed, and eventually he had ten young men at work in his ?academy? at 10 Great Marlborough Street, Westminster.(ODNB).

Coltivazione e Governo del Lino Marzuolo

Fine engraved title & 12 finely engraved plates.

A Voyage to the South Sea, undertaken by command of His Majesty, for the purpose of conveying the bread-fruit tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty's Ship the Bounty, commanded by Lieutenant William Bligh. Including an account of the mutiny on board the said ship, and the subsequent voyage of part of the crew, the ship's boat, from Tofoa, one of the Friendly Islands, to Timor, a Dutch settlement in the East Indies

printed for George Nicol, London 1792 - (12 3/8 x 9 5/8 inches). Stipple-engraved portrait frontispiece of Bligh by J. Condé after J. Russell, 7 engraved plates, charts and plans (comprising: 1 plate of a breadfruit, 2 folding plans, 4 charts [3 folding]), uncut. Expertly bound to style in half 18th century russia and contemporary marbled paper covered boards, spine gilt in 6 compartments, red morocco lettering piece in the second, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt First edition of the full official account of the Bounty expedition, the famous mutiny and Bligh's miraculous navigation to safety: a fine uncut copy. This work "includes a revised version of the text of Bligh's narrative of the mutiny, previously published in London in 1790 . This account was based upon Bligh's journal but was written, edited and seen through the press by James Burney, under the supervision of Sir Joseph Banks, during Bligh's absence from London while on his second breadfruit voyage on the Providence" (Hill [2004] p.48). The most remarkable part of the narrative is undoubtedly Bligh's account of the voyage in the Bounty's 23-foot launch. His achievement of safely navigating an open vessel packed with 19 men a distance of 4,000 miles without serious mishap is almost without parallel in the history of ocean travel. This copy is a lovely, wide-margined example. Cox, II p 305; Du Rietz 93; Ferguson 125; Hill (2004) 135; Mendelssohn II, 1117; Sabin 5910; Wantrup 62a. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

"The author produced a text in which he 'attempted to keep clear of every system' with regard to nomenclature and theory. Since he believed the 'antiphlogistic hypothesis equally probable with the modified system of Stahl' he explains both...The text is divided into two Books, I. 1792 - (COMBE, Charles, editor) HORACE. Q. Horatti Flacci Opera, cum variis lectionibus, notis variorum, et indice locupletissimo. London: William Brown and John Warren, 1792-93. Two volumes. Quarto, contemporary full straight-grain green morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards, raised bands, all edges gilt. $3200.First edition of Combe's "very magnificent and valuable" variorum edition of Horace, one of ancient Rome's greatest lyricists, one of only 25 to 30 large-paper copies, beautifully bound. "Exceedingly rare.""When [Horace] gets away from battles and triumphs, of gods and heroes and the whole machinery of Olympus, and turns to the familiar world in which he lives, he plays with a master hand upon the chords that vibrate in the breast of all men". Words cannot do justice to the exquisite polish of his verse, the crispness and terse vigor of his phrases, and the perfect choice of words". He, more than any other, makes antiquity live for us again". He is thus the most human of all the classic writers" (Peck, 845-46). Also a physician and numismatist, Charles Combe "had a taste for classical studies". In 1788 Combe began to work in conjunction with Mr. Henry Homer, fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, upon an edition of Horace, with variorum notes". Combe's colleague died before the first volume was completed, and he finished the work alone". It was a fine specimen of typography" (DNB). "A very magnificent and valuable edition". In the compilation, the editors carefully collated the editio princeps [printed circa 1470] and seven Harleian manuscripts". It is supposed that there were 30 copies only struck off on a large paper, which are excessively rare" (Moss II:31-32); more recent estimates put the number of large-paper copies at 25. With engraved frontispiece portrait (of William Murray, first Earl of Mansfield, to whom the work is dedicated). Text in Latin. Brueggemann, 587. Lowndes, 1114.
