Bucolica, Georgica et Aeneis. Editio omni prorsus typographico mendo, typographi saltem judicio, expurgata.

dabam Petrus Didot natu Major 1791 In-folio (cm. 36), pp. (4) iv, 513 (1). Graesse, Schweiger e Mambelli). Cfr. Mambelli (463): "Edizione corretta, ottimamente impressa e assai rara. Furono stampati 100 esemplari su carta speciale e 5 su pergamena?"; Brunet (V, 1293).

        L'Alta Lombardia

Big wall map, made of four sheets, from the 'Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale', with a decorative title cartouche, by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a Somasco monk. He was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives ? he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good condition. Roma Rome Terre di Langobardia p.172, 79. 915 645

An Introduction to a General Stud-Book; Containing (with few exceptions) The Pedigree of every Horse, Mare, &c. Of Note, That has appeared on the Turf for the last Fifty Years, With Many of an Earlier Date; Together with A Short Account of the Most noted Arabians, Barbs, &c. Connected Therewith.

London, H. Reynell, For J. Weatherby, Junior, 1791. 8vo. Completely uncut in contemporary marbled boards. Rebacked. Very light occasional brownspotting. A nice copy. (14), XX, 207, (1) pp. With contemporary owner's inscription to half-title: "This book belongs to Richard Kemble/ Whatley of Holty Common in the/ Parish of Hartfield in Sussex/ 1791". Mr. Kemble Whatley has furthermore annotated the front end-papers with "A Memorandum of the weight of/ my Guns. - 1791. -", listing 5 guns, mostly of noted origin, e.g. one previously belonging to King George II.. Extremely scarce first edition of the original "mother" Stud Book for the Thoroughbred, being "[n]ot only the first Thoroughbred stud book, but the first published stud book of any breed." (Mackay-Smith). This foundational work of race-horse breeding constitutes the first of its kind and is THE inevitable source-book for the history of thoroughbreds. It meticulously records the evolution of the British Thoroughbred and has acted as a blueprint of all other stud books worldwide. Being the forerunner of "The General Stud-Book", the definitive ancestry record for Thoroughbreds, continuously published by Weatherbys every four years since 1793, it contains information about all matings and births of Thoroughbreds in Britain and Ireland and as such, it constitutes the official foundation of racehorse selection and evolution."The publication in 1791 by Mr James Weatherby of Volume 1 of The General Stud Book was the key development in the emergence of the thoroughbred as a distinct equine breed. This first listing of notable horses of the day is the breed's founding register. It has been maintained ever since, with Weatherbys meticulously recording all thoroughbred births in Britain and Ireland. The record now extends to 46 consecutive volumes, providing an unbroken ancestry record of the breed. All thoroughbred stud books around the world trace their origins to that first produced by Weatherbys." (British Horseracing Authority). The thoroughbred horse is a breed of horse developed in the 18th century. English mares were bred to Arabian stallions in order to create a breed of horse capable of running great distances. All modern thoroughbred horses are descendants of three horses: the Darley Arabian, the Godolphin Arabian, and the Byerly Turk. The Bedouins maintained a strict registry of the breed in order to maintain its purity, but the first Thoroughbred "Stud Book" was created and maintained by James Weatherby in 1791, almost some 100 years following the importation of the three foundation stallions. This Stud Book listed the pedigrees of over 350 mares, each of them tracing their beginnings back to ECLIPSE - a descendent of the Darley Arabian, MATCHEM - a grandson of the Godolphin Arabian or HEROD - a great grandson of the Byerly Turk.In 1770, James Weatherby became the secretary of the Jockey Club in England. According to Peter Willett in "A History of the General Stud-Book", Weatherby was so busy that he needed an assistant, so he hired his nephew, who was also named James. He gave him the responsibility of publishing "An Introduction to a General Stud-Book", which was based upon first-hand information. Weatherby actually went from breeder to breeder and gathered all the race-programs of the day, making sure that "[w]ith regard to the authenticity of the Pedigrees, nothing is here inserted for which there is not some authority; as little as possible is hazarded on uncertainty; and nothing upon conjecture" (Weatherby, Preface, p. XI). Upon completing this momentous task, "the two pillars of racehorse selection and evolution were in place," (Willett)."WEATHERBYS" as the register is now known, appeared for the first time as it is here, in 1791, as "An Introduction to a General Stud-Book". This was later re-worked into "The General Stud Book", which appeared in 1793, and which was revised numerous times, most importantly in 1803, 1808, and 1827, 1859, and 1891. Weatherbys still appears every 4 years and is still considered the official register of Thorougbred horses.Only few copies listed in libraries world-wide: England: British Libr., Univ. of Oxford; Scotland: National Libr. of Scotland, Univ. of Glasgow; America: Univ. of Virginia, Huntington, Cornell, New York Publ.         The Life of Samuel Johnson,

London: by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly,, 1791. Comprehending an Account of His Studies and Numerous Works, in Chronological Order… The Whole Exhibiting a View of Literature and Literary Men in Great Britain for Near a Century During Which He Flourished. In Two Volumes. 2 volumes, quarto (274 × 211 mm). Recently rebound to style in sprinkled calf, spines gilt in compartments, red and blue morocco labels, double line rules to boards gilt. Housed in a tan cloth slipcase with marbled sides. Portrait frontispiece engraved by James Heath after Sir Joshua Reynolds, 2 engraved facsimile plates by H. Shepherd. 19th-century ownership inscription to front free endpaper of volume I, bookplate to volume II. Occasional light spotting to contents. An excellent copy, handsomely bound. First edition of the most famous biography in any language. The immense task of compiling the thousands of notes Boswell had recorded on "the great man's talk, habits and opinions" was begun after Johnson's death in 1784. Made up of trifling incidents as well as the significant events in Johnson's life, the work remains a masterpiece of portraiture. "Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of orators, Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of orators, than Boswell is the first of biographers. He has no second. He has distanced all his competitors so decidedly that it is not worth while to place them. Eclipse is first, the rest nowhere" (Macaulay). Boswell's reputation was further enhanced by the discovery in the early part of the 20th century of the Boswell Papers, which were stored in the Malahide Castle of Ireland for generations. What resulted from this discovery was the revelation of Boswell as an extraordinary personality in his own right; a far more complex, eccentric genius than the mere recorder of Johnson's conversations. This copy has p. 135, vol. 1, in the corrected state, reading "give". This is not an issue point for the whole book; some copies read "gve", but the correction was made in the press, and 1,750 copies with either state were available on publication day, 16 May 1791 (800 were sold in the first two weeks).

Lon., 1791. xxvi, 155 pp. b/w folding plate, folding map. First edition of an early and important governmental inquiry into the British slave trade. It contains the famous plan of the slave ship Brookes, first published in 1787, and widely circulated. This is its first book appearance, and this is the first book that argued against slavery based on eyewitness accounts rather than biblical citations. (See Lapidus Essay on Abolition of the Slave Trade IV.) This is a superb copy, untrimmed, bound as issued in paper over boards with paper label. The slave ship plate is sharp and clean. That book is part of the Charles Ramsden Collection of Signed Bindings, and is attributed to Edwards of Halifax. The present binding may be an Edwards of Halifax binding, as well. At the very least, it is in the style of Halifax. (See the British Museum bookbindings site, keyword "Etruscan."). Giani states that there were 200 copies on "vergata ducale" and twelve on another paper. A knowledgeable customer believes that there were fifty copies printed on this thick laid paper, and 150 on a thinner paper.

L'Encyclopédie enfantine, ou Magazin pour les petits enfans…Edition augmentée

Dresde: Chez les Frères Walther, 1791 Edition augmentée," though with the same collation as the 1771 Dresden apparent first edition, with a cancel title-page, leading one to believe it is simply a later issue of the first edition. All editions are rare. This work is sometimes attributed to Angélique de Los Rios. Original light blue boards, gilt paper spine label, author's name in manuscript on spine. Octavo. Engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page vignette. Spine lightly browned, a little foxing to covers, occasional light foxing to text. A very good copy overall. This work is divided into several sections, including etiquette and "good grace," precepts of a father to his children, general ideas and definitions of things that children ought to be taught, short definitions of the different arts and sciences, and precepts of civilized life. Various different stylistic formats are used, including poems, fables, and a series of questions and answers, in an effort to make this didactic work more accessible. The terminal ads list other works by this author. Charlotte-Marie de Los-Rios, who wrote a series of educational works, came from a family of printers, her father being the Lyonnaise printer Jean Mesplet and her uncle the Avignon printer François-Prothade Girard and her brother Fleury Mesplet, the founder of the first Canadian newspaper. Her mother, Antoinette Mesplet, was arrested for trying to smuggle prohibited books from Lyon to her brother-in-law in Avignon, and her husband, Jean-François de Los Rios, gained notoriety as an occasional dealer in prohibited books. Jean-François de Los Rios wrote a number of books himself, including Bibliographie Instructive, ou Notice de quelques Livres rares (1777), an unusual catalogue of some 800 rare books he sold during his career, including books that came from the libraries of the Jesuits at Lyon, Tournon, and Macon and from the private libraries of the abbés Piole and Gindre. De Los Rios, who was by now at the pinnacle of his career, was no doubt instrumental in promoting his wife's educational works.

CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES...AN ACT TO CONTINUE AN ACT, INTITULED, "AN ACT DECLARING THE ASSENT OF CONGRESS TO CERTAIN ACTS OF THE STATES OF MARYLAND, GEORGIA, AND RHODE-ISLAND AND PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS,"...[caption title]

Philadelphia: Childs and Swaine 1791. [Philadelphia: Childs and Swaine, 1791].. Broadside, 15 x 9 1/4 inches. Docketed on verso in contemporary hands in two places. Signed in manuscript by Thomas Jefferson. Old folds, with neat expert repairs. Overall, about very good. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. A very rare printing of an early United States law, signed in manuscript by Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State. The document, which also carries the printed signatures of President George Washington, Vice President John Adams, and House Speaker Frederick Muhlenberg, was approved January 10, 1791. Individual acts and bills of the first Congress were routinely printed for public consumption. A provision was made, however, to print a few copies of each act on large paper for dissemination to the states, and to have each copy signed by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. The present copy is one of those large paper issues, bearing Jefferson's manuscript signature beside his printed title. The law described extends to the end of the next session of Congress a law respecting acts of the Maryland, Georgia, and Rhode Island legislatures. Evans and NAIP together locate five copies of the present act, at the American Antiquarian Society, Philadelphia Public Library, Library of Congress, New York Public Library, and Rhode Island Historical Society. However, there is no mention of any of those copies being signed by Jefferson, and the dimensions given by NAIP are smaller than those of the present copy, indicating that those listed are not among the special copies signed by Jefferson for official transmittal. A very nice example of Thomas Jefferson's signature on an Act of the first Congress. EVANS 23870. NAIP w014382.
