        "Valiant's Book of Rating's. 1790."

6/25/16. Small 4to. 16 pp. manuscript entries. In 1790 "HMS Valiant" was the flagship of William, Duke of Clarence, also known as "The Sailor King." This book shows the personnel aboard ship under William's command. The first page is a table giving the number of officers and men needed to sail a 74 gun ship, and the rate of pay for each. Succeeding pages name the officers and the billets they occupied. Thus, the table tells us a 74 needs 5 lieutenants. The following page lists the lieutenants by name and gives the date on which they came aboard. This list continues through another 37 ratings - trumpeter, chaplain, cook, caulker and schoolmaster, as well as the carpenters, masters, midshipmen, boatswains and so forth - providing the name of the man filling the billet, his pay rate, and the date on which he came aboard. Departures are also noted. The only positions for which men are not named are the 385 seamen and the 123 marines aboard. A very personal look at the manning of a fighting ship in the age of the Sailor King. In contemporary marbled wrappers, some leaves detached but all present. Housed in protective wrappers and a black leather pull off case.

TRAVELS FROM THE CAPE OF GOOD-HOPE, INTO THE INTERIOR PARTS OF AFRICA, INCLUDING MANY INTERESTING ANECDOTES. With Elegant Plates. Descriptive of the Country and Inhabitants: Inscribed by Permission to His Grace the Duke of Montagu.

London: for William Lane, 1790. 2 volumes. First edition. With 14 elegant copperplate engravings, some folding. There are two plates of giraffes rather than only one as listed and an additional plate of arms opposite page 1. 8vo, in original printer’s boards and untrimmed as issued, very rare as such, the boards of gray paper with contemporary backing of brown calf gilt ruled and lettered in manuscript. xxiv, 376; [vi], 403, errata pp. A fine set in fully original condition as it came from the printer, unrestored and unsophisticated, very scarce such. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK. “Le Vaillant was a French naturalist who traveled in South Africa from 1780 to 1785 when he collected material for his magnificent book on the birds of Africa. His travels were extensive and took him as far as Namaqualand, Bechuanaland, and parts of the Kalahari. His conceit adds a spice of humor to his books” This book relates experiences and occurances of Le Vaillant's first journey to the Cape, during which he travelled to Algoa Bay and the district then known as "Bruyntes Hoogte" via Mossel Bay, returning through the "Camdeboo" country and crossing the Gamka, Buffalo, and Touws Rivers. It provides an interesting account of South Africa at a time when relatively little was known regarding its natural history and the Dutch settlers, valuable less for its geographical information than for its addition to the knowledge of the natural history of the area.

Letter signed ("Le Comte de Mirabeau"). N. p., 16. VI. 1790.

1790. 8vo. 3 pp. To an undisclosed recipient, wishing to discuss the particulars of a new public education system in France: "J'ai reçu, Monsieur, un temoignage de votre bienveillance, etre n'est pas le premier dont vous m'avez honoré [...]". - Transl. from the French original: "I received, Monsieur, a token of your kindness, and it was not the first with which you have honored me. I have delayed in answering you because I was in bed, deprived of sight, and I didn't want that the hand of a secretary temper the expression of my gratitude. It is sincere [...] when good citizens such as you and, which is a very honorable coincidence, good citizens illuminated by the meditation and study of works which have produced everything which is great in the world, take up the task of consoling public men for the calumnies, iniquities, ostracisms which are their surest emolument. If nature hadn't endowed me with some tenacity, and my bizarre destiny, in sowing my way with shackles, hadn't provided me with some compensations of this kind, my very ardent sensibility would long since have consumed me. I would be very charmed [...] to make your closer acquaintance and to talk over your ideas on a new system of public education, for the moment is approaching for dealing with it, and we have been building on moving sands if we don't give our entire edi!ce such underpinnings. Please let me know the moments that your circumstances would permit you to give me in particular, and agree to the homages of the very distinguished sentiments with which I have the honor to be [...] your very humble and very obedient servant" [...]. - In a lengthy postscript, Mirabeau has added: "I am sending this letter to your bookseller, as I don't know your address. Would you like to let me know what it is? Would it also be indiscreet to ask a literary favor of you? Books have been bought for me at this moment at M. d'Holbach's. I am not a bibliographer, much less a bibliomaniac; but am the owner of a rather large number of beautiful books. I have for many of the great men of antiquity a kind of superstition that makes me want to have their most beautiful editions. Of Demosthenes I only have the Works of Demosthenes and Aeschines, the first Greek orators &c. by Hieronymus Wolf, Frankfurt 1604 - Could you indicate the preferable edition? And the best editions of the Greek classics in general? I have been told of a Demosthenes edition in which there is a kind of medallion where this god of eloquence holds in one hand three crowns and in the other a raised dagger. Do you know this edition? [...]". - Some damage to edges and slightly dusty.

The Catechism of Nature; For the Use of Children

Boston: For David West, Marlboro' Street and E. Larkin, Cornhill, 1790. First American edition, published the same year as the first English edition, of this influential early science primer. Framed as a dialogue between tutor and pupil, The Catechism of Nature advances a physico-theological doctrine, in which thoughtful study of the natural world leads to a greater knowledge of God: "The creation is open to the view of all; it only requires observation." Beginning with astronomy, "the innumerable heavenly lights," the work turns to topics in chemistry, geology, zoology, and botany, considering the wonders to be found close at hand, each time a bird takes flight or a spider builds a web: "With all our boasted knowledge, we have not discovered all the excellent uses either of herbs or flowers." Katechismus der Natuur first appeared in Dutch in four parts from 1777 to 1779; the work proved so popular that Martinet soon adapted it for young readers. The first edition in English appeared in London in March 1790, followed by this first American imprint later in the year: "Between 1790 and 1850 as many as 24 editions of The Catechism of Nature for the Use of Children appeared in the English-speaking world alone" (The Public Image of Chemistry, 155). This undated Boston imprint, with testimonials dated October 1790, is the true American first, preceding the 1791 Philadelphia imprint listed in Evans. Bristol B7406, Shipton and Mooney 45901. A scarce book, with an important place in the history of science education. 18mo, [1-5] 6-108, contemporary sheep over wooden boards covered in blue paper. Early ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Some loss to paper on boards, one-inch loss to sheep at foot of spine, minor worming to first few leaves, occasional foxing. Housed in a custom chemise and slipcase.

Libretto di bozzetti di disegni di Antonio Luigi Catani pratese nell'anno 1790.

1790. [Prato, 1790], in-4 antico, leg. coeva in piena pergamena (allentata), pp. [154].

A Unique Manuscript Map of Block Island Sound Including Fisher’s and Gardiner’s Islands, the Hamptons, and Montauk Point

1790 - Manuscript Map. "Draft of the Sound." Parts of Long Island, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Circa 1798-1802. 1 p., 13 1/2 x 13 in. With George Washington signed document described below. Based on Osgood Carleton's 1798 Chart from New York to Timber Island including Nantucket shoals, our map adds local nautical knowledge that would have been critical to the safety of lives and cargoes at the time. Noting uncharted shipwrecks off Fisher's Island, three unmarked reefs, and two small islands on the course from Newport, Rhode Island, to New London, Connecticut, our map is a purposeful and unique document rather than a simple contemporary copy, which would still be rare. Modern Americans consider the water to be a divider. Indeed, bumper stickers on Long Island refer to Montauk as "The End," and the operators of the ferry service from Orient Point to New London, Connecticut, remind rude motorists that they always have the option to "drive around" the sound. Prior to the twentieth century, however, New England's waters were considered a highway rather than a divider. This is especially true in the area shown by this manuscript map, one of the most critical and difficult parts of the southern New England coast: the passage between Block and Long Island Sounds. As one departs Newport and Narragansett Bay, Point Judith sticks out like a thumb. As dangerous as this area has been, there is a fair amount of sea room to avoid its perils. The real trick is entering Long Island Sound from the Atlantic Ocean and Block Island Sound - a crucial route for coastwise traders to bring goods to New London, New Haven, other Connecticut shoreline cities, and eventually New York City via the East River. The waters of Long Island Sound meet the Atlantic in an area today known as "The Race" at the western end of Fisher's Island. At certain times, the confluence of tides creates waves so intense and close together that they are said to look like a pack of galloping horses, providing its historic name, the "Horse Race." Compounding navigational difficulties, it passes over the submerged, eponymous Race Rock. Even today, mariners under sail avoid this entrance to Long Island Sound. (A lighthouse warning of it took seven years to build and was considered an engineering marvel when completed in 1878.)In Watch Hill Passage, between the eastern end of Fisher's Island and Watch Hill Point, the currents, though still perilous, are less violent. Though narrower, even today this is the preferred route for small sailing craft travelling from Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, Newport, and Narragansett Bay. Then and now, vessels use this passage to head for the Connecticut coast-today to marinas and yacht clubs, but historically, to the "Whaling City" of New London, the fishing villages of Stonington, Noank, and Niantic, the shipbuilders of Mystic and Old Saybrook, or the economic centers of New Haven and New York. This manuscript sea chart represents the area, clockwise from the west, starting at Orient Point and "Plumb" Island, New London, Fisher's Island, "Watch Pt." [Watch Hill], Westerly, Point "Judeth," [Judith], "Conanicut" [Connanicut] Island, "Neport" [Newport], Block Island, "Montuk" [Montauk] Point, and "Gardners" [Gardiner's] Island. Parts of East Hampton are shown but not named. A scale of nautical miles is present in the lower right corner. There is no latitude scale, but longitude centering on 72° west is noted along the bottom edge. Additionally, soundings in fathoms (6 foot measures) are marked for coastal areas, arrows indicate prevailing currents, and "x" marks the location of shipwrecks in particularly treacherous spots. The map is a near-exact match to Osgood Carleton's 1798 Chart from New York to Timber Island including Nantucket shoals published by William Norman. Carleton improves on Matthew Clark's 1789 Chart of the Coast of America from New York to Rhode Island, especially along the Connec. (See website for full description)

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("C. Spazier"). Berlin, 25. III. 1790.

1790. 2 SS. 8vo.
