"Voyages made in the years 1788 and 1789, from China to the north west coast of America. To which are prefixed, an introductory narrative of a voyage performed in 1786, from Bengal, in the ship Nootka; observations on the probable existence of a North West Passage; and some account of the trade between the north west coast of America and China; and the latter country and Great Britain."

London: printed at the Logographic Press; and sold by J. Walter. 1790. "First edition, 4to, pp. vii, [1], [12], xcv, [1], 372, [108]; stipple- engraved portrait frontispiece, 3 folding maps, 24 plates and charts (some folding); includes the folding plate of the Philippines which is not present in all copies; bound in full mottled calf, blindstamped on front and back boards with raised bands on spine, gilt tooling and spine label; text clean, occasional mild tanning or offsetting to plates. & & “One of the early and fundamental books on the Northwest coast of America... In addition to his voyages from China to America in 1788 and 1789, which form the principal part of this work, Captain Meares also describes his earlier voyage to the northwest coast from Bengal” (Lada-Mokarski 46). & & ""This narrative is a most important work. It was on these discoveries by Meares that the claim of the British to Oregon mainly depended. In the treaty between England and Spain which followed the Nootka affair the Spanish claims were disallowed, and the Spanish withdrew. Subsequently, in the arbitration of the Oregon question, England finally yielded to the United States much territory claimed under the discoveries made by Meares"" (Cowan). & & During this second voyage, Meares assembled the Northwest America, the first ship to be launched in northern waters. He explored the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Port Cox, and Port Effingham, and narrowly missed discovering the Columbia River, which he observed but named Deception Bay. His discoveries were the basis for Britain’s claims on the northwest. Spain’s seizure of Meares’ ships and disputation of his claim brought about the famed Nootka Sound Controversy, which nearly resulted in war between the two countries. This account “also gives a full account of the Indian nations of Northwest America, describing their villages, languages, manners, and customs” (Hill). & & “One of the early and fundamental books on the Northwest coast of America ... In addition to his voyages from China to America in 1788 and 1789, which form the principal part of this work, Captain Meares also describes his earlier voyage to the northwest coast from Bengal” (Lada-Mokarski). & & Cowan (1914), p. 152; Forbes 201 (one of Meares's ships sailed on to Hawaii); Hill 1126; Howes M-469: ""Pioneer English voyage to this coast""; Lada-Mokarski 46; Streeter 3491."

Captain Cook's Voyages round the world ... containing a relation of all the interesting transactions which occurred in the course of the voyages... with a narrative of Commodore Phipps's Voyage to the North Pole. And an abridgement of Foster's [sic]

Newcastle-on-Tyne: M. Brown, 1790. Two volumes, stout octavo, with a portrait frontispiece, a folding map and 49 other engraved plates including folding "Death of Captain Cook"; some light offsetting or discolouration from poorish-quality paper; a very nice copy in contemporary dark calf, very good old rebacking with double red & green leather labels. Unusual provincial imprint. Extremely scarce provincially-printed abridgement of Cook's voyages, probably based on Anderson's text, but including extra material designed to attract a wider reading public including an important early abridgement of Phillip's Voyage to Botany Bay, and an anonymous summary of information on the fauna of New South Wales, along with Constantine John Phipps' Journal of a voyage… to the North Pole. The publication was issued in two different forms, either as two volumes or as four. Forbes gives a collation for the four-volume version which differs in a few details from this two-volume version. Examples of both versions can be found in various libraries (see Forbes for listing). The abridgement of Phillip's Voyage to Botany Bay is especially interesting and early. The full account of the voyage had been published in 1789. During 1790 second and third editions appeared as did two Irish pirated versions and this abridgement, which occupies eighty-three pages at the end of the work, and has its own title-page ("The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay; with an Account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson and Norfolk Island"). It is followed by a 23-page section entitled "A Short Account of Animals in New South Wales", which includes an engraving of the animals of New South Wales - the squirrel opossum, the flying opossum and a "kanguroo" engraved by Ralph Beilby and Thomas Bewick, like most of the other plates in the book. Bewick was at this time apprenticed to Beilby. A few of the plates, including the "Death of Cook", are engraved by Lizars. Ferguson knew only the Mitchell and National Library copies of the text as well as another in his own collection. Only the copy at the State Library of Western Australia has been added in the recent addenda volume.

Journal Historique du Voyage de M. de Lesseps , Consul de France, Employe dans l'expedition de M. le Comte de la Perouse, en qualite d'interprete du Roi

Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1790. Octavo, two maps and large plate, all folding, small stain and repairs to map in volume 2; a little shelf wear but a good set in contemporary half calf, bookplate. First records to be saved. A good copy of the first edition of this account of the epic journey across Russia by which a substantial portion of the records of the La Pérouse voyage were preserved. De Lesseps, the young son of the French Consul-General at St. Petersburg, and himself Russian interpreter on the voyage, left the expedition at Kamchatka with charts, views, and La Pérouse's journal from Macao to Kamchatka, to travel overland to France. He thus became the only survivor of the ill-fated expedition. In 1829, he was called on to identify the relics brought back to France by Peter Dillon. This graphic account of his travels over enormous distances and under hostile conditions with his eventual arrival at Versailles in October 1788, is a significant supplement to the voyage. "An interesting account and… important to any collection of La Pérouse material…" (Davidson).

The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay... Second Edition

London: John Stockdale, 1790. Quarto, portrait, engraved title, seven folding engraved charts and 46 engraved plates; in quite lovely condition, in contemporary binding of full diced calf, flat spine banded and panelled in gilt, sides bordered in gilt, gilt arms at centre of each side; some slight wear at joints; a very handsome copy. Kitty Courtenay's "exquisite" taste - led astray by Beckford. A magnificent copy of Phillip's important account of the First Fleet in its rare and much expanded second edition. This copy is from the library of Viscount Courtenay, with his coat of arms in gilt on the covers. William "Kitty" Courtenay, the 3rd Viscount, (1768-1835) was a rather remarkable figure. He succeeded to the title on the death of the 2nd Viscount in 1788, at which point he also inherited Powderham Castle; by 1790 he was already organising Wyatt to make a new music room at the castle and carrying out all sorts of extravagant improvements. Later he would revive the title of Earl of Devon for the family, the title still today associated with the castle. However from 1811 he would spend the remainder of his life in self-imposed exile, initially in the United States and later in France, after his flamboyant lifestyle and specifically his affair with the dissolute William Beckford caused great scandal. Maybe Beckford, the famously fastidious book-collector, led the younger Courtenay astray bibliophilically too. This second edition of Phillip is really the "best edition" of the work since it was extensively revised and re-organised by its publisher Stockdale who had been unhappy with the slightly disorganised nature of his 1789 first edition; apart from the revisions he adds a really substantial and significant appendix, largely reprinting his own publication, the anonymous 1787 History of New Holland. It is accompanied by the fine "New Chart of New Holland", coloured in outline and with an inset map of Botany Bay, that he had prepared for that 1787 publication. This edition is very much scarcer than the first. It has its own List of Subscribers which is fairly modest, numerous booksellers making single-digit orders - apart from Symonds, presumably H.D. Symonds the radical and opportunistic operator, early publisher of Barrington, who orders a staggering 400 copies. Could this be a misprint?

Voyages dans le pays des Hottentots. a la Baye Botanique , et dans la Nouvelle Hollande. Traduits de l'Anglois, accompagnés de détails précieux relatifs à M. de la Pérouse

Paris 1790 - Octavo, two works together; quarter polished calf, rubbed, spine gilt in compartments with morocco label, very good copy. Revised French version. The second, considerably changed, Letellier version of Tench's account. Letellier had also published a version in 1789: it is not clear whether his edition or that published by Knapen the same year was the first French account of the new colony of New South Wales to appear in print. In this edition the publisher provides Tench's account the first eye-witness account of Australia's settlement - along with the account of La Pérouse at Botany Bay, together with the substantial addition of Patterson's narrative of travels in South Africa. This copy bears the ownership signeture of C. Johannes Brand, superintendent of the East India Company at the Cape of Good Hope. A pencilled note to the front endpaper notes that Captain Cook stayed with Brand at the Cape, and gifted a table to him as a token of appreciation. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Modern Voyages: Containing a Variety of useful and entertaining Facts? Also, the latest authentic Accounts from Botany Bay? For the amusement and instruction of youth of both sexes

Chamberlaine and Rice, P. Wogan and others, Dublin 1790 - Two volumes, with both half-titles; a handsome set in contemporary mottled calf, flat spines gilt and with double red and green morocco labels. Rare poetic epitaph for Captain Cook. A fine and attractively bound set of voyages collected and edited for the enlightenment of younger readers. Pacific voyagers, including Dampier, Anson, Wallis and Carteret feature heavily in the narratives, while no fewer than four chapters are devoted to the discoveries of Captain Cook. Significantly one chapter includes a plea for a public monument to Cook's memory including a rhyming epitaph of ten lines proposed by the editor Reverend John Adams, who humbly prefaces his composition with this disclaimer 'the following epitaph is laid before the public, in hopes that a perusal of it may incite some gentleman of superior genius to produce something better on the subject and more worthy of that celebrated character?'. Of particular note given the 1790 date of publication, Adams' work also includes thirteen short entries on the newly established penal colony at Botany Bay. These short and enticing articles are edited and simplified from the official account of Governor Arthur Phillip published in London the previous year; they include descriptions of the Aborigines of Port Jackson, early attempts at agriculture and the soil and climate of the colony. Interestingly, the journal narratives of Lieutenant Watts of the convict transport Lady Penrhyn and of Captain Marshall of the Scarborough are included in simplified form. The natural history of New South Wales features in two entries, one on a peculiar shark and another on a dingo sent as a gift from Governor Phillip to Mr. Nepean in England, and now in the possession of the Marchioness of Salisbury at Hatfield House. The handsome features and ferocity of the dingo are admired though it is noted that 'it is scarcely to be expected that this elegant animal will ever become familiar.' First published in London in 1790 by Kearsley, this Dublin imprint is of some rarity: Beddie was able to locate only one copy, in the State Library of Victoria; Forbes located just three other copies, including one in the Mitchell Library.         Wedgwood Creamware Jug bearing 'A Map of the World from the Latest Discoveries'

Wedgwood, circa, Staffordshire 1790 - Ceramic creamware jug with world map printed on two sides, stands 186mm tall with a diameter of 90mm; spout has been abraded, small hairline crack to the rim, generally in very good condition. The map on a milkjug. Charming late 18th-century Wedgwood printed jug displaying a world map which includes recent discoveries in the Pacific and east coast of Australia. The jug was clearly produced after the third voyage of Captain Cook as the Hawaiian islands are marked on the map, which features Australia divided into New Holland and New South Wales, the latter still connected to Van Diemen's Land. An imaginary southern land is partially depicted as an incomplete island named 'Terra Australis' southwest of the Cape of Good Hope and directly south of Tristan de Cunha. New Zealand is depicted with the Cook Strait clearly marked, as are many of the smaller Polynesian groups such as Tahiti and the Solomon Islands. Both hemispheres of the world are adorned with allegorical neoclassical figures in dramatic poses including a New World Indian in the southern hemisphere, an African figure with resting lion and an Oriental maiden flanked by a camel. Wedgwood creamware was produced in Staffordshire from the mid-eighteenth century onwards and after slow acceptance by the market eventually became a huge commercial success for the firm. The map is a double-hemisphere type in a style typical of the end of the century as exemplified by Samuel Dunn's world map of 1787 or the map engraved by James Lumsden in 1785. This rare Wedgwood jug reflects the curiosity of late eighteenth-century Europeans for voyages of discovery at a time when the last remaining geographical mysteries were finally being resolved. It is a delightful record of contemporary discoveries in the Pacific and on the east coast of Australia.

Oeuvres de Fontenelle ? Nouvelle édition, augmentée de plusieurs pièces relatives a l'auteur, mise pour la première fois par ordre des matières, et plus correcte que toutes les précédentes?

Jean-Francois Bastien, Paris 1790 - Eight volumes, octavo, engraved portrait frontispiece in volume 1 and a folding plate in vol. 2; a fine set in contemporary French polished marbled calf, one or two joints slightly weak; flat spines ornately gilt with double red labels. A very attractive set of Fontenelle's works, including his enormously popular Entretiens sur la Pluralité des Mondes: this utopian analysis of the universe took Europe by storm and was precursor and inspiration to scores of imitations. It was first published in 1686, and first translated into English by Aphra Behn only two years later. Although the Entretiens clearly owes a tremendous debt to the astronomical traditions of Galileo and Brahe, Fontenelle's sensational tale of the inhabitants in 'other planets, in other galaxies, and even on comets, could hardly fail to captivate' (Nina Rattner Gelbart, Introduction to the Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds). In the form of an elegant dialogue between a scientist and a Marquise, it takes as its starting point that 'Toute la philosophie n'est fondée sur deux choses: sur ce qu'on a l'esprit curieux et les yeux mauvais': that is, that if we had a perfect understanding we would not need science because all would be spontaneously revealed. Meant as a quick summation of scientific discovery, but also as pure speculation on the possibilities of the universe, it suggests that as it has taken six millennia for Europeans to cross the Atlantic Ocean to America, it may take a little longer for the inhabitants of other worlds to cross the far greater expanses of space. This set also includes 'Dialogues des Morts anciens' and 'Histoire des Oracles', works which exemplify Fontenelle's desire to propagate philosophical thinking. Voltaire described Fontenelle as having the most universal mind produced by the era of Louis XIV. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Travels to discover the source of the Nile, in the years 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771, 1772, and 1773.

Edinburgh, printed by J. Ruthven for G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1790.5 volumes. 4to. Contemporary marbled calf with gilt fillets round sides, spines gilt with red morocco labels (1 label missing; rebacked with the original spines laid down, some wear to spines and extremities), inner dentelles. With engraved title-vignettes, 3 battle plans, 3 folding maps, 4 leaves of Ethiopian dialects and 55 engraved plates.* First edition. - James Bruce, Laird of Kinnaird (1730-1794), the first European to undertake an expedition aimed specifically at finding the Nile's source, failed in his attempt, but his exploration paved the way for many more travelers who came after him. In mid-1768 Bruce ascended the Nile from Alexandria and journeyed into the Ethiopian interior. In 1770 he believed to have found the source of the Nile near Gondar, the ancient capital of Abyssinia. Still he was mistaken, as he had not reached the source of the Nile, but only that of its considerable tributary. He descended the Blue Nile to its confluence with the White Nile at the site of present-day Khartoum. He was one of the earliest explorers to report this connection between the White and Blue Nile. The results of Bruce's travels was a very great enrichment of the knowledge of geography and ethnography especially of Ethiopia. His very readable account is still fascinating today. The plates based on Bruce's own and Balugani's drawings include botanical and zoological specimens, antiquities and artefacts. - 'One of the most splendid narratives in the litterature of African exploration' (Hallet, Africa to 1875, p.110). - Some foxing and offsetting from plates, otherwise a fine copy of a milestone in the history of travel literatur.       Cf. Gay, Bibl. de l'Afrique et de l'Arabe 2881 (French editions of 1790 and 1791); cf. Maggs, Bibliotheca Asiatica et Africana 841 (English edition of 1789); Compact DNB I, p. 1504. A very rare translation into Swedish of Norris' travels in the West Guinean country Dahomey. Robert Norris (d. 1791) was a slave trader. In February 1772, he visited the court in Dahomey, and provides his readers with curious and horrifying details of a mass execution taking place as part of various "customs" or royal ceremonies. "In 1788, when, owing to the vigourous action of the advocates of abolition, a committee of the privy council was appointed to inquire into the slave question, Norris was delegated to lay before it the views of the Liverpool trade, a circumstance which probably led to the publication of his Memoir of the Reign of Bossa Ahadee, King of Dahomey ... with an Account of the Author's Visit to Abomey, the Capital, and a Short Account (2nd edition) of the African Slave Trade (London 1789). His account of the slave trade is a defence of slavery" (DNB ). Ex-libris impressum of SBW on first endleaf. A good copy of this interesting work.

The History of England, from the Revolution to the Death of George the Second. (Designed as a Continuation of Mr Hume's History)

London - Printed for T. Cadell, 1790. London - Printed for T. Cadell, 1790 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The History of England, from the Revolution to the Death of George the Second. (Designed as a Continuation of Mr Hume's History) by Tobias Smollett. In five volumes complete. A new edition. With an extensive index to all the volume to rear of volume five. Smollett original wrote A Complete History of Englandin four volumes, published 1757-1758, with a Continuation published from 1760-1765. Tobias George Smollett (1721- 1771) was a Scottish poet and author. He was best known for his picaresque novels, such as The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748) and The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751), which influenced later novelists such as Charles Dickens. Smollett wrote what he regarded as his major work, A Complete History of England, from 1757 to 1765. During this period he served a short prison sentence for libel. 'Designed as a Continuation of Mr Hume's History':The History of England (1754 - 62) is David Hume's great work on England's history which was written in instalments while he was serving as librarian to the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh. His History became a best-seller, finally giving him the financial independence he had long sought. Both the British Library and the Cambridge University Library still list him as David Hume, the historian. More a category of books than a single work, Hume's History spanned from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688 and went through over 100 editions. Many considered it the standard history of England until Thomas Macaulay's The History of England from the Accession of James the Second. With an advertisement to this edition to front of volume one. Condition: In contemporary calf bindings. Externally with some wear to extremities, rubbing and marks to boards and loss to some spine labels, one almost entirely absent. Five joints starting slightly, four held by cords only, one of which is almost detached, may fail, front board absent to one volume. Internally, text blocks firmly bound. Bright but with occasional scattered foxing and odd slight handling marks. Some pages close cropped, only affecting page numbers. Overall: GOOD ONLY due to joints and loss.

He was born at Clooniquin, County Roscommon, Ireland, the son of Richard Murphy and Jane French. A barrister, journalist, actor, and playwright, he edited Gray's Inn Journal between 1752 and 1754. As Henry Thrale's oldest and dearest friend, it was he who introduced Samuel Johnson to the Thrales in January 1765. He was appointed Commissioner of Bankruptcy in 1803. Murphy is best known for three biographies: his 1792 Essay on the Life and Genius of Samuel Johnson, his 1762 Fielding's Works and his 1801 Life of David Garrick. Thought to have coined the legal term wilful misconstruction whilst representing the Donaldson v. Becket appeal to the House of Lords in 1774 against the perpetual possession of copyright. He died at Knightsbridge, London, and was buried at Hammersmith, London. A biography was written in 1811 by Dr. Jesse Foote. Nathaniel Dance painted his portrait which is thought to now be in the Irish National Portrait Collection.
