Altra veduta in prospettiva dell' altro Candelabro antico

Rome 1790 - The watermark that appears is number 64 in John Wilton-Ely on page 1171 and is dated in the 1790'sThis plate is the from the series "Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne. . .)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely. Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete Etc

Libretto di bozzetti di disegni di Antonio Luigi Catani pratese nell'anno 1790.

      - [Prato, 1790], in-4 antico, leg. coeva in piena pergamena (allentata), pp. [154]. Clarissa Morandi "Luigi Catani pittore neoclassico" (Prato storia e arte, dicembre 2010). Manoscritto di grande interesse documentario. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

AN ESSAY ON NAVAL TACTICS, SYSTEMATICAL AND HISTORICAL... IN FOUR PARTS

London, 1790, 1797. 30 and 22 b/w engraved plates, some with hand coloring. 2 vols. 4to. xii, (5)-165 pp.; ix, (5)-34; 29; 61 pp. This is the first effort by an Englishman to systematize naval tactics with theories based on actual engagements. Clerk’s widely studied and influential work was written at the time of a movement for tactical reform within the Royal Navy. He drew on numerous historical examples, including several in the American Revolution: Arbuthnot off the Chesapeake (March 1781); Graves off the Chesapeake (September 1781); and Rodney and DeGrasse (1782). Nelson fought the Battle of Trafalgar by Clerk’s principles. “This must be considered Clerk’s grandest achievement.” -D.N.B. Part I was privately printed in 1782, and finally published in 1790. Parts II-IV were published in 1797. This is, therefore, the first complete collection of Clerk’s writings, which were reprinted in their entirety in 1804 and several times thereafter. Not in Neeser or Sabin, in spite of the American interest. Corbett, Signals and Instructions, pp. 377-78. Smith, Navies of the American Revolution, 349 (citing only the 3rd edition of 1827). Adams & Waters 360. Two volumes in original paper boards, rebacked with paper in contemporary style, with paper labels. Pages are clean and untrimmed. Plates in vol. I show light worming in two spots, not affecting images. Outer edge of text in vol. II is waterstained, not intruding on text block. Both volumes of this set bear the contemporary engraved bookplate of H.R. Glynn who, at the date of publication, had attained the rank of Post Captain. He became a full admiral in 1846. (See O’Byrne p. 401) In all a remarkable set of a scarce and important work in contemporary binding.

        Marshal Turenne]

1790 - A fine proof impression of Bouteloup's striking portrait of Marshal Turenne, one of France's most celebrated military heroes. Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne was one of France's greatest military commanders. The son of the duc de Bouillon, Turenne was born in Sedan in 1611. By the time of his death in 1675, Turenne had risen to the rank of Marshal of France, after leading a career that inspired Napoleon to list him as one of France's most important captains. He showed his capabilities during the Thirty Years War, when he distinguished himself with countless victories, and played a pivotal role in the Dutch Wars under Louis XIV. He was killed at the battle of Sasbach in 1675, and his remains were later moved by Napoleon to Les Invalides in Paris. This triumphant engraving by Louis Alexandre Bouteloup reproduces a celebrated sculpture of Turenne by Robert Guillaume Dardel. Dardel was the pupil of Augustin Pajou, but he did not become a member of the Academie Royale until 1791. He exhibited primarily at the Salon de Correspondence, and since he was denied access to the royal marble his works are mostly modeled in terracotta and bronze. Dardel cast this commemorative bronze statue of Turenne for his patron, Prince Louis-Joseph de Conde, in 1785, and it is considered one of his most successful works. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of two creased tears on the right margin. Tiny tear on top margin. Image size: 18 3/8 x 15 inches. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Extraits du Man[uscript] ar[abe] no. 689". Autograph manuscript.

[Paris?, c. 1790?]. - 4to. 22¼ pp. on 12 ff. Extracts from the Arabic historical manuscript "no. 689" by Joseph de Guignes, the famous French sinologist and orientalist, with notes on the history of Egypt during the years 1517-1522 and the Ottoman conquest by Sultan Selim. Guignes's notes start at f. 111 and end at f. 334 of the Arabic manuscript, which is a part of a historical work on Egypt entitled "Bada'I al-Zuhur fi Waqa'I al-Duhur". The "Bada" was written by the famous chronicler of the late Mamluk and early Ottoman period in Egypt, Muhammad Ibn Iyas (1448-after November 1522) and today is kept in the manuscript section of the French Royal library (no. 1825, ancien fonds no. 689). Guignes's extract contains numerous of transcripts in Arabic script. - Today, Joseph de Guignes is best known for his "Histoire générale des Huns, des Turcs, des Mogols, et des autres Tartares occidentaux" (Paris, 1756-1758), for his unsuccessful attempts to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics (before the 1799 discovery of the Rosetta Stone and Champollion's breakthrough), and for his theory that China was an outpost of Ancient Egypt.

        Lettres Patentes Du Roi

Bordeaux, France, 1790. Very Good. THE HIGHLY IMPORTANT FIRST DOCUMENT GRANTING JEWS EQUALITY OF CITIZENSHIP IN EUROPE& & Proclamation of Equal Rights for Sephardic Jews of France in 1790& & (HISTORIC BROADSIDE) Lettres Patentes Du Roi… [Letters Patent of the King… that those Jews known in France as Portuguese, Spanish and Avignonese Jews will continue to enjoy the rights of active citizens] Bordeaux, France: chez Michel Racle, Imprimeur de l’Intendance, [January 28] 1790. Broadside measures 21 inches x 15 inches with royal coat of arms insignia at top of sheet. Folds and age toning present with evidence of nail holes consistent with this notice having once been tacked up for public posting. & & THE EARLIEST PROCLAMATION IN EUROPE OF EQUAL RIGHTS FOR JEWS. & On August 27, 1789, a newly created French National Assembly opened the doors to the French Revolution by approving “The Declaration of the Rights of Man”. Though freedom and equality were demanded of “all men”, they curiously did not include Jews. It was not until six months later that King Louis XVI, under political pressure, issued this open letter patent, dated January 28, 1790, granting equal rights to Jews, but only those of Sephardic extraction. & & “Louis, by the grace of God and the constitutional Law of the State…decrees… All the Portuguese, Spanish, and Avignonese Jews will continue to enjoy those rights which they have enjoyed up until now, and which are sanctioned in their favor by the Lettres Patents; consequently they will enjoy the rights of active citizens, when they fulfill the conditions required by the Assembly’s decrees…”& & On the eve of the Revolution, approximately 40,000 Jews were living in France. Those of Spanish and Portuguese extraction had been living quietly among the southern population, including Bordeaux and Avignon, since the end of the 15th century. They had integrated for survival, spoke French and were less observant in religious ritual, in some cases pretending to be “New Christians.” The Ashkenazim, on the other hand, were concentrated in Paris and Alsace in the north of France and spoke mainly Yiddish. This may explain why the Marranos were granted equality by the King a full year before their fellow Ashkenazim. & & After the great expulsion of 1492, European Jews had lived in a constant state of upheaval and insecurity but they did not vanish. England’s Oliver Cromwell readmitted them in 1655 and The Jewish Naturalization Act of 1753 finally granted citizenship, but not political rights, as these were still restricted by oath requirements. Surprisingly, Jews were not fully protected as citizens of the United States until 1824, when the Jew Bill in Maryland was enacted.&

"Part way through his voyage La Perousse sent Baron de Lesseps overland from Petropavlosk (of Tom Lehrer fame) to Europe, with letters and journals of the expedition. As a child Ds De Lesseps had accompanied his diplomat father first to Hamburg, then to St. Petersburg and grew up speaking both German and Russian as fluently as his native French. Because of his knowledge of Russian as well as his exceptional personal distinction, he was chosen to accompany the great La Perouse expedition as Interpreter. Setting sail in August 1785, the expedition arrived in Petropavlosk in 1787. The young de Lesseps was given with the mission of returning to Paris overland through Siberia with all the documents of the first 2 years of the voyage. The present book is an account of this arduous Journey. It is of great interest for Siberian ethnography, and de Lesseps observes and describes with sympathetic interest the natives of the area through which he travelled: in particular the Koriaks, the Lamuts and the Tungus. "...His journey was a very difficult one, as he was faced with primitive roads, enormous distance. a hazardous cliamte, and the perils of a half-civilized and badly policed empire; but he succeeded, and to him we owe the survival of many of the most important documents of the expedition" - Hill

Johann Hermann Knoop (1700-1769) was head gardener to the Dowager Princess of Orange at Marienburg, near Leeuwarden."Man muss nachdrücklich festhalten, dass J.H. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

LE GRAND LIVRE DE LA NATURE, OU LÕAPOCALYPSE PHILOSOPHIQUE ET HERMETIQUE, OUVRAGE CURIEUX, DANS LEQUEL ON TRAITE DE LA PHILOSOPHIE OCCULTE, DE LÕINTELLIGENCEDES HIEROGLYPHES DES ANCIENS, DE LA SOCIETE DES FRERES DE LA ROSE-CROIX,

Au Midi: De lÕimprimerie de la verite, 1790. FIRST EDITION. 115 pp. Text in French. Softcover. Small 8vo size. Marbled stiff wrappers. In new, marbled, stiff wrappers; internally crisp and clean. Touzay-Duchanteau has been called a professor of theosophy, professor of algebra and professor of good magic. He was also [self and otherwise] labeled as an hermeticist, esotericist, heterodoxist, occultist and illuminist. Hermeticism or the Western Hermetic Tradition is a set of philosophical and religious beliefs based primarily upon the Hellenistic Egyptian pseudepigraphical writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus who is the representation of the congruence of the Egyptian god Thoth and the Greek Hermes. These beliefs have heavily influenced the Western Esoteric Tradition and were considered to be of great importance during the Renaissance. Illuminism is a belief system whereby a believer makes a claim that he has been illuminated or experienced enlightenment of a spiritual nature. Esoteric Christianity is a term which refers to an ensemble of spiritual currents which regard Christianity as a mystery religion, and profess the existence and possession of certain esoteric doctrines or practices, hidden from the public but accessible only to a narrow circle of "enlightened", "initiated", or highly educated people. These spiritual currents share some common denominators, such as: heterodox or heretical Christian theology; the four canonical gospels, various apocalyptic literature, and some New Testament apocrypha as sacred texts; and disciplina arcani, a supposed oral tradition from the Twelve Apostles containing esoteric teachings of Jesus the Christ. Followers of these disciplines believed that the pursuit and discovery of the philosopherÕs stone to be The Great Work. This philosopher's stone (Latin: lapis philosophorum) sodhi kutta is a legendary alchemical substance, supposedly capable of turning base metals, especially lead, into gold (chrysopoeia); it was also sometimes believed to be an elixir of life, useful for rejuvenation and possibly for achieving immortality. For a long time, it was the most sought-after goal in Western alchemy, meditated upon by alchemists like Sir Isaac Newton, Nicolas Flamel, and Frater Albertus. The Stone was the central symbol of the mystical terminology of alchemy, symbolizing perfection, enlightenment, heavenly bliss, theophany and of the Christ. Duchanteau-Touzay is said to have died [not surprisingly] after spending forty days imbibing only his own urine in hopes of obtaining the PhilosopherÕs Stone. Very good/No jacket issued.         Al Signor Carlo Morris Cavaliere Inglese

Rome 1790 - The watermark on this plate is number 64 in John Wilton-Ely on page 1171 and is dated in the 1790'sThis plate is the from the series "Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne. . .)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete Et
