        Faust. Ein Fragment.

Leipzig, Göschen, 1790. A lovely copy in an excellent pastiche-binding of full brown morocco with gilt green title-labels to spine and front board. A very nice, clean, and fresh copy.. First edition, first issue - in the extremely scarce offprint (Sonderdruck) from Goethe's collected works, vol. 7 - in the even scarcer variant of the first issue (hitherto only known in one other copy, recorded in 1966) which has preserved the quire denomination "W.7.B." (Werke 7. Band) on D1 - of one of the peaks of world literature, the main work by one of the greatest writers that ever lived. Few other writers have been as influential as Goethe and his works were an immense source of inspiration for everything from drama and music to science and philosophy. Goethe is generally accepted as one of the most important Western thinkers and his main work "Faust" arguably constitutes the most important and influential work of world literature. "If Goethe may justly be called the last representative of the renaissance ideal of the "oumo universale", his "Faust" embodies the sum total of his poetical growth." (Printing and the Mind of Man: 298). "Faust" was first printed in volume seven of Goethe's Schriften in eight volumes from 1787 - 1790 and appeared simultaneously in a separate issue (offprint), likewise under the title "Faust. Ein Fragment", but in which the quire denomination from "Werke 7. Band" had been removed. A couple of different issues appeared, the first being identifiable by the uncorrected mistaken repetition of the three last verse lines of p. 144 on p. 145. Hagen 11:7: "Vom Bd. 7 Bg. F-T existieren zwei Drucke." This is the first (called Sm) with all the pointers mentioned in Hagen (for example: 89,1: leseni, 152,14: vollkomm'nes). As mentioned, the quire denomination was removed in the separate issue, but hitherto one single copy had been registered bearing one quire denomination on D1 (Hagen: "...ist ein Exemplar der "ächten" Ausgade (Dm) nachgewisen worden, bei dem auf Bl. 1 des Bogens D die Bogennorm Goethe's W.7.B stehen geblieben ist") - our copy also has this single quire denomination preserved (as opposed to the several title issues that were created using the unsold copies of vol. 7 of the collected works, in which all the quire denominations are present). "Faust" is probably the work for which Goethe is most famous, and this is not without reason. The novel emphasizes the strength of the individual and the right to freely investigate aspects of human and divine character. The novel also fights for man's right to determine his own destiny, and it is thus considered the first great literary work in the spirit of modern individualism. The work is also considered highly relevant to science and scientific thought, since Goethe here offers a holistic and non-analytic approach to these areas.PMM 298 (bein the 1834 ed., not the real first); Hagen: 204

Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales

London: J. Debrett, 1790. In good condition in a modern binding.. Quarto, engraved title page with vignette and 65 hand-coloured plates, page 240 in the early "uncancelled" state describing the "Wattled Merops", bound without the list of subscribers; a very good copy in period-style calf with spine decorated in compartments, maroon label. A fine, large copy of the coloured issue of Surgeon White's account, the first major account of the colony to focus on the natural history of New South Wales. White's Journal is a travel and ornithological classic by a medical voyager. Copies such as this one, in which the plates have original hand-colouring, are recognised as among the most beautiful of Australian colour-plate books. It is also one of the earliest Australian bird books.John White was chief surgeon of the First Fleet, and overcame difficult conditions both on the voyage out and early days of the settlement. White was not enthusiastic about the prospects for New South Wales, but his book is an even-handed and often fascinating account of his experiences. The Journal contains an interesting and valuable account of the voyage from London, with long, detailed accounts of the stops at Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and of the colonial voyages to Norfolk Island. A keen amateur naturalist, White accompanied Governor Arthur Phillip on two journeys of exploration after arriving at Port Jackson.White's great contribution was to collect scores of natural history specimens and send them to England, where they were used as the basis for many of the plates, drawn up by leading natural history artists of the day, including the highly skilled Sarah Stone. The book was an immediate success, with subscribers alone accounting for seven hundred copies.

Ancient Cookery, From a Ms in the Library of the Royal Society, Arundel Collection No. 344

(London: Printed for the Society of Antiquaries by John Nichols, 1790). Hardcover. Very good. Published as part of 'A Collection of Ordinances and Regulations of the Royal Household, made in divers reigns, from Edward III to William and Mary, and also Receipts in Ancient Cookery'. 4to. This copy does not retain the original pagination but is numbered from 1 to 52, and seems to be the variant issued for separate sale. (Copies known to be extracted from the Collection apparently retained the pagination of the Collection, 425-476.) Bound in a mid-19th century binding of dark green pebbled cloth, interleaved with blanks, and with a printed paper spine label (nearly perished). The edition retains the orthography of the recipes, which the anonymous editor believes date no later than the early 15th century. Recipes include 'Nombules of a Deer', 'Farsure for Hares', 'Browet of Alemayne', 'Pejons Stewart', 'Goos in Hochepot' etc. A very good copy. With a couple of well worn 19th century printed slips of paper laid in, presumably once used as bookmarks. See Lowndes I, 52.

Experiments and observations on different kinds of air, and other branches of natural philosophy, connected with the subject. In three volumes; being the former six volumes abridged and methodized, with many additions

London, J. Johnson, 1790. Three volumes in three. 8vo. 1,480 pp. [I: li, 411 pp., 9 folded, engraved plates; II: viii, 472 pp.; III: viii, 574 pp., and a 6 pp. list of other works by Priestley]. Uniform contemporary full calf. Spines with gilt ornaments, green morocco label with gilt title, and small round, gilt-bordered red morocco label with gilt volume number.l New, improved edition by the author, of his work on gasses. The British theologist, philosophist, educator, political activist and chemist Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) is claimed to be the first to discover oxygen. He also discovered various other gasses, and accidently invented the eraser. This is more or less the "final" edition of his work on gasses. An earlier edition was published in 1774-1777, but this later edition contains newer information, carefully selected by the author. The nine large, folded plates show the scientific equipment used, and partly designed or improved by Priestley himself. Some scattered spotting, otherwise a well-preserved set.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("C. Spazier").

Berlin, 25. III. 1790.. 2 SS. 8vo..

        THE FORDINGBRIDGE HUNT.

Printed and sold by J. Pitts 14. Great St. Andew Street seven dials sic c 1790 - single slip broadside (approx. 250 x 90 mm), drop head title below a woodcut illustration, mounted at head to an album leaf, browned except for the top eighth, creased below woodcut, a number of tiny holes with slight effect on the title and imprint . A humourous ballad ridiculing some Fordingbridgers who were duped in to 'hunting' some hares which were only stuffed exemplars. The cant name for Fordingbridgers we learn is 'Blue-skins'. We have not located any other broadside printing of this ballad, or indeed this one. The text appeared in The Sporting Magazine as 'The Hare Hunters' in November 1809, but the imprint here makes this earlier (note the printer's carelessness with his own address). On the verso of the album leaf are 3 engravings of fashionable figures, apparently taken from the Pocket Book, For the Year 1773.

EJEMPLAR ABSOLUTAMENTE COMPLETO DE PORTADILLAS Y PORTADAS, CON TODOS LOS MAPAS Y GRABADOS.- Refs.: Boucher de La Richarderie, IV, 319; Brunet, I, c 1283; Gay, 44; Graesse, 550.         Group Of Copy Letters From The Woolwich Military Science Laboratory, 1790.

London: Woolwich Arsenal, 1790. - Fourteen large folio pages, handwritten in neat script with one hand drawn illustration showing the profile of the building as it is to be equipped with a special chimney for the new sulphur refinery - "to carry off the dangerous effluvia". Minor chips and tears to edges, minor spotting. The letters were, apparently, rescued from a bonfire when the storage building at Woolwich Arsenal was demolished in the 1970s. As a group, they provide a view into the daily workings of the most important military research establishment in the British Isles during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The letters make reference to Major William Congreve (later Sir), the Comptroller of the Royal Laboratories at the Royal Arsenal, who ten years after these papers were written won substantial renown as a result of his work on rocket technology. These Congreve rockets, heavily based on Mysorean rockets used against the British East India Company, were used to great effect in subsequent wars, including the Napoleonic Wars. Included in these documents are lists of requirements, including personnel and various ingredients for making cartridges, documents calculating the expense of powder for the war office, and discussion concerning the construction of various engines and pieces of machinary, such as the aforementioned sulphur refinery.

0 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Exlibris of explorer & author Wilfred Thesiger. First Edition. Bruce spent five years (1768-73) travelling extensively in upper Egypt and Abyssinia, and reached the source of the Blue Nile, following it to its confluence with the White Nile. His history and description of Abyssinia are particularly valuable, as the country had been visited only once by a European (Poncet) in the previous one hundred and fifty years. Bruce immediately won the respect and admiration of the Abyssinians on account of his imposing physical appearance and manner, his courage, knowledge of Geez, and horsemanship, as well as his acquired skill in medicine, which allowed him to save some members of the royal family of Abyssinia from smallpox. His narrative also contains sections on the history and religion of Egypt, Indian trade, the invention of the alphabet, and an appendix (Volume V), entitled Select Specimens of Natural History, describing and illustrating various plants, birds, animals, and insects, including the rhinoceros, hyaena, fennec, and lynx. All of the maps and plates of natural history subjects, artifacts, antiquities, and monuments are based on Bruce?'s own drawings and those of his companion, Italian draughtsman, Luigi Balugani. Bruce believed he had discovered the source of the true Nile when he reached the springs of the Blue Nile in 1770. "He had not reached the source of the true Nile, but only that of its considerable tributary. He was also in error…in regarding himself as the first European who had reached these fountains…There is a sense, however, in which Bruce may be more justly esteemed the discoverer of the fount of the Blue Nile than Paez, who stumbled upon it by accident, and, absorbed by missionary zeal, thought little of the exploit to which Bruce had dedicated his life." (DNB) The fame and interest of Bruce?'s travels are due in part to the vivid and robust style in which his narrative is written: "He will always remain the poet, and his work the epic, of African travel." (DNB) Blackmer 221. Brunet I 1283. Cox I 388-89. Gay 44. Ibrahim-Hilmy I 91. Nissen, ZBI, 617. cfMendelssohn I 311.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

AN AUTHENTIC ACCOUNT OF THE CONVERSION AND EXPERIENCE OF A NEGRO [caption title]

London: Printed by T. Wilkins, [nd, but ca. 1790].. 4pp. printed on folded sheet. Very good. One of several edition of this short account of the Christian conversion of an African-American in late 18th- century New York. The anonymous author says he encountered the man when visiting a plantation. Falling into conversation with him, he discovered the man was enamored of the Bible and a practising Christian, nut more out of fear than of joy: his master, a Quaker, had taught his slaves to read but not encouraged them in religion. The narrator asks the man questions about doctrinal issues such as "the merit of works, the justification of a sinner, the power of grace, and the like," and is delighted with the "heavenly wisdom that God had put into the mind of this sweet Negro." The pamphlet ends with an exhortation to the reader, who has been more privileged that the black man, to do likewise: "Reader, this Negro was a Christian; a Bible Christian. He had not indeed the outward form of godliness, but he had the power - How is it with you?" ESTC locates five total editions, two of them American, two London, and one in Edinburgh. All are scarce; this edition with fewer than ten locations.

RELATION AUTHENTIQUE DE TOUT CE QUI S'EST PASSE A SAINT- DOMINGUE AVANT ET APRES LE DEPART FORCE DE L'ASSEMBLEE COLONIALE.AVEC LA CORRESPONDANCE DES SIEURS DE PEYNIER, GOUVERNEUR, COUTARD, ET AUTRES COMMANDANTS ET OFFICIERS TANT DE TERRE QUE DE MER.

[Np, but St. Domingue, probably Au Cap. 1790]. - 74pp. Modern three-quarter calf and boards. Repaired paper loss in titlepage approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter, affecting first three letters of title. Light soiling on titlepage and second leaf; very minor foxing. Good. Untrimmed, several signatures unopened. "A partisan account of the disturbances at Port-au-Prince and Saint Marc during July and August, 1790" - Garrett. Though Bissainthe indicates that this imprint is Parisian, the crudeness and nature of the printing is such that we believe it more likely that it was actually printed in Saint Domingue. From imprints handled by this firm we know that there was a rich print culture in St. Domingue on the verge of the revolution. There were presses at St. Marc, Port-au-Prince, and Cap Français, with probably two or three different printers at each of the last two. All Caribbean printing is quite rare. Only nine copies of this work located in OCLC. BISSAINTHE 7687. SABIN 75187. GARRETT, FRENCH COLONIAL QUESTION 159. OCLC 20694712, 77725342.

As a preamble, Bernardin de Saint Pierre expresses doubt as to the decisions of the National Assembly, which does not in itself make the right decisions for the people.
