Autographed letter signed to the Viceroy of Mexico, Conde de Revillagigedo

1790 - Malaspina´s manuscript report of the progress of the expedition, with an account of the route taken, addressed to the Viceroy of Mexico. 12 June 1790. Lima. In 4to (228 mm x 188 mm). 3 pp. Manuscript on paper, watermarked "D. & C. Blauw”; traces of small red wax seal, small tear at foot of fold affecting one word. A fascinating letter by Malaspina, addressed to Juan Vicente de Guemes, Viceroy of Mexico (1789 – 1794), describing the year he has spent since parting from the viceroy in Cadiz, around the coast from Buenos Aires to Lima. The “Malaspina” expedition (1789 – 1794) was arguably the most significant Spanish scientific exploration performed in the 18th century, designed and modeled under the influences of those of the British Cook, and the French La Perouse. The letter is signed from Lima, detailing to the Viceroy the progress and route taking by the expedition during its 11 months, and giving a detailed account of the places visited; beginning with a strange note, telling the Viceroy he wishes not to come to him as a traitor, but as someone who wishes to manifest his everlasting recognition for the many favors granted upon him, and continues the note expressing his joy for the success had so far in the expedition, carried out between Buenos Aires (the expedition first landed in Montevideo) and Lima, and the many astronomical and scientific discoveries made: “Mi estimadissimo favorecedor: Ya ha pasado un año que me separado de Ud. en Cadiz con animo de venir a cogerle por la espalda no como Traidor, si bien como una Persona que desea manifestarle su perpetuo reconocimiento por los muchos favores que le ha merecido siempre viajando toda la costa comprendida entre Buenos Ayres, y Lima, y agregandole muchos conocimientos Astronomicos, y Fisicos”. Malaspina promises then to send a detailed account from Acapulco, and begins with the derrotero of the expedition, beginning at Montevideo, exploring the coast of the Patagonia, Puerto Deseado, the Falklands (even then disputed, and considered a point of geo-political importance), Tierra del Fuego, Cabo de Hornos, and up the Pacific, all the way to Lima, after exploring Chiloe (mapping the region, collecting zoological and botanical samples, and meeting with the Huiliches natives) and Valparaiso (the corvettes separated at this point, to gain time, the Atrevida exploring the coast of Valparaiso, whilst the Descubierta sailed to the islands of Juan Fernandez, the alleged location of Robinson Crusoe). The vessels would reunite at the port of Callao, giving course to a prolonged stay in Lima (arriving in 20 May, and staying for approximately three months), re-provisioning and repairing the Descubierta and the Atrevida, it would also give time to the scientists to give order to the vast amount of material taken so far. He then states how pleased he is that the abuses of the previous minister have been remedied, though he thinks it will be too difficult to reach the capital [Mexico], as it would take too much time away from the expedition, and the only delay in Acapulco will be to re-provisioning of the ships. The expedition had goals of political, economic, and scientific nature, which required a consistent crew to achieve them: astronomers and cartographers (Dionisio Galeano, Cayetano Valdes), draughtsman (Jose Cardero, Jose del Pozo, Juan Ravenent, Fernando Brambila, to name but a few), naturalists (Tadeo Haenke) and scientists joined the expedition. The main goals were to improve the scientific knowledge of the American domains, providing the crown with a better cartographical and hydrographical knowledge of the ports and coastlines, analyzing the state of affairs of the Viceroyalties (for which the Commanders Alejandro Malaspina and Jose de Bustamante y Guerra were provided with extensive authority to request any documents necessary by the local Officials), to collect zoological and botanical samples, in all, to better understand the American colonies and thus been able to bett

Port-au-Prince, 1790. Minor foxing and soiling to titlepage. Unopened and untrimmed. Very good. The fourth publication issued by the Comte de Peinier, governor of St. Domingue, concerning the separatist movement of the Assembly of Saint Marc. It includes sections on the arming of the gens de cloeur by the provincial government. An important document in the history of revolutionary-era Haiti, as the situation slides rapidly to chaos.         VUE PERSPECTIVE DE LA PLACE MONTARCHER DE LA VILLE DU CAP. PRISE DU COIN DE LA RUE ST. FRANCOIS-XAVIER.

[Cap-Francais, St. Domingue]. 1790.. Watercolor, 10 1/2 x 16 3/4 inches, mounted to a 12 3/4 x 18 inch card captioned in manuscript. Some expertly repaired tears, and minor soiling. Very good. Matted. A fine perspective view of Place de Montarcher, one of the major public spaces in Le Cap-Français, modern-day Cap-Haïtien, with the large Vallière & Montarcher fountain at center, surrounded by a lively street scene. Le Cap-Français was by far the richest port city in the colony, which helped transform Saint Domingue from a languid outpost into one of France's most profitable and richest colonies by the time of the French Revolution. The image is signed, "Le Cher Largues. pinxit 1790." Original views from 18th-century Haiti are extraordinarily rare in the market.

Contemporary marbled paper-covered boards (expertly re-backed to style) Provenance: 'JB' ('JB' surmounted by a viscount's coronet) [ with :] Richard WHARTON (c.1774-1828). Observations on the Authenticity of Bruce's Travels in Abyssinia; in reply to some passages in Brown's travels through Egypt, Africa, and Syria. Newcastle: printed by T. Cadell, sold by T. Cadell, [and others], 1800. Quarto (10 1/4 x 8 3/8 inches.). 84 pp. Marbled paper wrappers (neatly rebacked). Provenance : Mrs. M. Wharton (inscribed on title "From the Author to Mrs. M. Wharton."). An exceptional copy in original boards of the first edition of a work that offers the unusual combination of an important travel book that is also beautifully written. Together with a rare author's presentation copy of Richard Wharton's work in support of Bruce (no copies are listed as having sold at auction in the last thirty years). James Bruce, Laird of Kinnaird (1730-1794), arrived in Alexandria, Egypt, in July 1768 having determined to discover the source of the Nile which he believed to be in Abyssinia (Ethiopia). Traveling via Cairo, Thebes and the Red Sea he reached Gondar in Abyssinia in 1770. He stayed there for two years before finally reaching the source of the Blue Nile, and in 1771, he also found its confluence with the White Nile. This work is particularly important for its portrayal of Ethiopia, then little-known, for its literary merits, and for the final volume on natural history. "Bruce especially prepared himself for this arduous task by acquainting himself with conditions in Africa, with instruments for taking bearings, and with some skill in medicine. This latter accomplishment proved to be very valuable, as, saving some members of the royal family of Abyssinia from the smallpox, he gained needed favors. Besides he was of magnificent proportions physically and a superb horseman, both of which factors assisted him to the good graces of the Abyssinians. He might have spared himself some attacks on his veracity had he bettered his information on what had been accomplished by the Jesuits in their expeditions and explorations for the source of the Blue Nile. Probably he really believed at the time when he stood barefooted by the little fountain whence flows out the beginnings of the Blue Nile, that he was the first white man to gaze on and identify these waters. As it was, the doubts of the truthfulness of his narrative were numerous, occasioning several parodies, best known of which are the Travels of Baron Munchausen. They also caused him to delay for many years the publication of his journals. The result of his travels was a very great enrichment of the knowledge of geography and ethnography" (Cox). "[Bruce] had not reached the source of the true Nile, but only that of its considerable tributary …. He was also in error … in regarding himself as the first European who had reached these fountains. … There is a sense, however, in which Bruce may be more justly esteemed the discoverer of the fount of the Blue Nile than [the Jesuit Pedro] Paez, who stumbled upon it by accident [in 1615], and, absorbed by missionary zeal, thought little of the exploit to which Bruce had dedicated his life" (DNB). Blackmer 221; Cox I, pp. 388-389; Ibrahim-Hilmy I, p. 91; Pritzel 1256 (Volume V only).

        [Marshal Turenne]

1790. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of two creased tears on the right margin. Tiny tear on top margin. Image size: 18 3/8 x 15 inches. A fine proof impression of Bouteloup's striking portrait of Marshal Turenne, one of France's most celebrated military heroes. Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne was one of France's greatest military commanders. The son of the duc de Bouillon, Turenne was born in Sedan in 1611. By the time of his death in 1675, Turenne had risen to the rank of Marshal of France, after leading a career that inspired Napoleon to list him as one of France's most important captains. He showed his capabilities during the Thirty Years War, when he distinguished himself with countless victories, and played a pivotal role in the Dutch Wars under Louis XIV. He was killed at the battle of Sasbach in 1675, and his remains were later moved by Napoleon to Les Invalides in Paris. This triumphant engraving by Louis Alexandre Bouteloup reproduces a celebrated sculpture of Turenne by Robert Guillaume Dardel. Dardel was the pupil of Augustin Pajou, but he did not become a member of the Academie Royale until 1791. He exhibited primarily at the Salon de Correspondence, and since he was denied access to the royal marble his works are mostly modeled in terracotta and bronze. Dardel cast this commemorative bronze statue of Turenne for his patron, Prince Louis-Joseph de Conde, in 1785, and it is considered one of his most successful works.

LETTRE DE M. LE GÉNÉRAL A M. CHACHEREAU, AVOCAT AU CONSEIL-SUPÉRIEUR DE SAINT-SOMINGUE, ET RÉPONSE DE M. CHACHEREAU [caption title]

Port-au-Prince, 1790. Single sheet, untrimmed and unopened. Fine. Letter from the Governor General of St. Domingue, Louis- Antoine Thomassin de Peinier, to the lawyer Chachereau, concerning the Association de Jeunes Citoyens (Association of Young Citizens) in Port-au-Prince. The Governor General expresses here his concern about the trouble the group seems to have created; Chachereau's response is also printed. In 1790 the colony of St. Domingue was a tinderbox waiting to catch the fire of revolution and independence, and Peinier certainly had his hands full. Rare, with copies located only at the British Library and Bibliothèque Nationale.

A Narrative of the Mutiny, on Board His MajestyÂ’s Ship Bounty; and the Subsequent Voyage of the Crew in the ShipÂ’s Boat.

Dublin: L. White..., 1790. vii, 144 pp. HereÂ’s a fun item. Dublin was a great reprint center - the Dover Press of its day. This is a Dublin reprint of BlighÂ’s narrative, printed the same year as the English first edition, but without plates. Hill notes, “Unlike most Dublin printings, this Irish first edition is rarely found.” - Hill 134. Indeed, ABPC shows only a single copy of this Dublin 1790 edition appearing at auction since 1975. A very nice copy complete with half title, bound in quarter calf over marbled boards.

CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES: AT THE SECOND SESSION,...AN ACT TO CONTINUE IN FORCE AN ACT PASSED AT THE LAST SESSION OF CONGRESS, INTITLED, "AN ACT TO REGULATE PROCESSES IN THE COURTS OF THE UNITED STATES." [caption title]

[New York], 1790. Removed from a sammelband volume, with stab holes along the left edge. Near fine. A very rare printing - only the second copy located - of the first extension of the law that regulated procedures in the United States Supreme Court and in lesser federal courts. The U.S. Constitution provided for the creation of the Supreme Court, but did not include provisions for the establishment of any other judicial system. This was addressed by the Judiciary Act of 1789, passed on Sept. 24 of that year, one of the first acts of the first Congress. On Sept. 29, 1789 the Congress passed a law making rules for judicial procedure in those courts, especially governing the issuance of "writes and processes" and the rates of fees. The present act extends the provisions of that law until the end of the next session of Congress. NAIP and Bristol locate only one copy of this act, at the South Carolina Archives. Rare.

He was fluent in Turkish and Persian. His account is rich with information of the countries, people, characters, religion, etc. and mainly based on his own observations. Further he records much details about the Turkish-Russian war of 1788-9. He was engaged to undertake secret missions in the area under the ministry of Vergennes who earlier had been French ambassador to the Porte (from 1755).         PROCLAMATION DE M. LE LIEUTENANT GENERAL AU GOUVERNEMENT, CONCERNANT LES TROUBLES ACTUELS DE LA COLONIE, EN DATE DU 12 NOVEMBRE 1790

Port-au-Prince, 1790. Single folded sheet. One pencil underlining, else fine. Untrimmed. A rare Haitian printing related to an early skirmish which precipitated the beginning of the Haitian Revolution. Philibert-François Rouxel de Blanchelande, French general and governor of Saint Domingue from the end of 1790 through the revolution, led French Royalist forces against the rebel Haitians. He eventually lost Haiti to the revolutionaries, and eventually met the guillotine in Paris in 1793. Here Rouxel addresses the small revolt led by Vincent Ogé, a wealthy free Haitian who attempted to secure voting rights for free men of color in Haiti. Rouxel refused to allow Ogé's request. As a result, Ogé organized between 250 and 300 free men of color who successfully repelled several detachments of colonial militia in October 1790, before being driven into Spanish-controlled Santo Domingo in November, the month this proclamation was printed. Eventually, Ogé himself was captured, imprisoned, then executed, broken on the wheel in the public square in Cap-Français on February 6, 1791, after which he became a martyr to the cause of Haitian independence. An important piece related to early stirrings of the Haitian Revolution, which blew wide open just a few months later, in April 1791. Only one copy recorded in OCLC, at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. All early printing from the 18th century Caribbean is rare, especially those that mention revolutionaries by name.

An Essay on Naval Tactics, Systematical and Historical... In Four Parts.

London: T. Cadell, 1790, 1797. 2 vols. 4to. xii, (5)-165 pp.; ix, (5)-34; 29; 61 pp. 30 and 22 b/w engraved plates, some with hand coloring. This was Nelson's handbook at Trafalgar. It is the first effort by an Englishman to systematize naval tactics with theories based on actual engagements. Clerk?'s widely studied and influential work was written at the time of a movement for tactical reform within the Royal Navy. He drew on numerous historical examples, including several in the American Revolution: Arbuthnot off the Chesapeake (March 1781); Graves off the Chesapeake (September 1781); and Rodney and DeGrasse (1782). Nelson fought the Battle of Trafalgar by Clerk?'s principles. ?"This must be considered Clerk?'s grandest achievement.?" -D.N.B. Part I was privately printed in 1782, and finally published in 1790. Parts II-IV were published in 1797. This is, therefore, the first complete collection of Clerk?'s writings, which were reprinted in their entirety in 1804 and several times thereafter. Not in Neeser or Sabin, in spite of the American interest. Corbett, "Signals and Instructions", pp. 377-78. Smith, "Navies of the American Revolution", 349 (citing only the 3rd edition of 1827). Adams & Waters 360. Two volumes in original paper boards, rebacked with paper in contemporary style, with paper labels. Pages are clean and untrimmed. Plates in vol. I show light worming in two spots, not affecting images. Outer edge of text in vol. II is waterstained, not intruding on text block. Both volumes of this set bear the contemporary engraved bookplate of H.R. Glynn who, at the date of publication, had attained the rank of Post Captain. He became a full admiral in 1846. (See O?'Byrne p. 401) In all a remarkable set of a scarce and important work in contemporary binding.
