MINUTES OF THE CONVENTION OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA WHICH COMMENCED AT PHILADELPHIA, ON TUESDAY THE TWENTY-FOURTH DAY OF NOVEMBER...FOR THE PURPOSE OF REVIEWING, AND IF THEY SEE OCCASION, ALTERING AND AMENDING, THE CONSTITUTION OF THIS STATE. [issued with:] MINUTES OF THE SECOND SESSION OF THE CONVENTION OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA.... [bound with:] MINUTES OF THE GRAND COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE CONVENTION OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA

Philadelphia, 1790. Contemporary sheep, expertly rebacked with original spine. Very good. In a blue morocco box. Provenance: Robert J. Fisher (early signature). Following the adoption of the Federal Constitution and Bill of Rights, Pennsylvania decided to amend its own frame of government, first established with their radical constitution of 1776. The present volume contains the complete minutes of the 1789-90 convention. Often considered a conservative reaction against the excesses of democracy incorporated into the earlier 1776 constitution, the revised document created a bi-cameral legislature and vested strong executive power in the governor and with a separation of powers modeled on the federal constitution. Among the delegates to the Convention of 1789-90 were Thomas McKean, James Wilson, Thomas Mifflin, Timothy Pickering, and Abraham Lincoln (of Berks County, an ancestor of the president). With this constitution, which was ratified in 1790, Pennsylvania went from the most egalitarian state government to the most reactionary. The proceedings of the convention were printed in three parts in folio, and Evans provides each with a separate entry, although the first two are paginated continuously. The work is very rare with all three parts, with the only other examples appearing in auction records being from the libraries of Jay Snider in 2008 and Samuel W. Pennypacker in 1906. This example with provenance to Judge Robert J. Fisher (1806-88), graduate of Yale Law School and chief judge of the 19th Pennsylvania judicial district, who for over thirty years presided over the courts in York and Adams counties.

CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES: AT THE SECOND SESSION, BEGUN AND HELD AT THE CITY OF NEW-YORK, ON MONDAY, THE FOURTH OF JANUARY, ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND NINETY. AN ACT TO REGULATE TRADE AND INTERCOURSE WITH THE INDIAN TRIBES [caption title]

[New York], 1790. Folio. Dbd. Stitching holes in right margin. Light age toning. A very good copy. In a half morocco and marbled boards folding case, spine gilt. The first federal law regulating trade and communication with Indian tribes, requiring that any person involved in commercial transactions involving American Indians have a license for that purpose issued by the superintendent of Indian Affairs, that any land transactions with Indians have to be performed by the federal government, and punishing those who committed crimes against Indians. With this law, the federal government established the position that only it had the authority to govern key elements of interaction and commerce with American Indians. The act indicates that any person attempting to trade with the Indians without the proper license will forfeit "all the merchandise so offered for sale to the Indian tribes, or so found in the Indian country." In addition, and more importantly, the act regulates the sale of Indian lands, which can only be done through the authority of the federal government. Finally, it could punish anyone who went onto Indian lands and "there commit any crime upon, or trespass against, the person or property of any peaceable and friendly Indian or Indians." This act was the foundation of a system of United States interaction with Indian tribes which lasted for decades. An extremely rare document. No copy has appeared at auction in the last forty years (the famous Frank Siebert sale in 1999 included only a 1796 act slightly revising this one, which sold for $7475), and the only known copies are at the American Antiquarian Society, the Library of Congress, and The New York Public Library.

A SUITE OF TWELVE UNIQUE EROTIC PAINTED CHINESE SCENES: From the Ch'ing Ping Mei

China n.d. c. 1790. An erotic hand painted color scroll, 12. individual scenes, each painting ca. 21.5 x 15 cm., overall. width is 18 cm., in very clean, pristine condition, external. phoenix cloth, inside dark blue silk mounting, jade ends.. THE SEXUAL PLEASURES OF HERO HSI-MEN AND HIS PARAMOURS This work is an excerpt from the Chinese erotic novel, the Chin P'ing Mei, written during the Ming dynasty. It depicts the sexual exploits of the hero, Hsi-men and is China's most famous classic novel of erotica. * This lovely hand scroll illustrates twelve erotic scenes with Hsi-men and his willowy female consorts. Sapphicsm, a common theme, but this example shows the hero engaged in a host of sexual pleasures. He adores the vulva and her tiny "Lotus-hooks" or bound feet. In one superb view he is embraced by three lovely paramours as he attempts to gratify each with his tender touch. * In another sensual scene while his "jade stick" pierces and ravishes an old favorite, a younger concubine is voyeuring at them with desire as we see her pink-flushed face, as she masturbates with relish. Several other marvelous paintings show various positions employed for mutual benefit. * Each scene is done in the Ming dynasty style, with lovely furniture and furnishings graphically illustrated, including scholar's desk items, scrolls, brushes, vases flowers & other period objects. * Executed in fine color brush work mounted with silk borders, paper mounted, some 3 meters plus long, embellished with pale jade end pieces. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: R. H. Van Gulik: SEXUAL LIFE IN ANCIENT CHINA for more and copious details on this subject and theme. * R.H. Van Gulik: EROTIC COLOUR PRINTS OF THE MING PERIOD. * DREAMS OF SPRING: Erotic Art in China. Louis Liger, sieur d'Auxerre, was the author of a number of works on what can be generally be termed the rural economy. The present work, first published in 1700 under the title Oeconomie générale de la campagne, ou Nouvelle maison rustique , remained in print throughout the 18th century. The subjects covered range from the initial purchase and setting up of a country estate, to advice on all aspects of country living: the keeping of chickens, geese, ducks, swans and (strangely) pelicans, pheasants, peacocks; horses; beef and dairy cows, sheep and goats, pigs, bee-keeping. The second part is devoted to advice on arable farming, what to grow and how; the management of forest and marshland; notes on the use of ornamental trees and finishes with hints on trading in the produce of the estate. The second volume is presented in two main parts: the first deals with all aspects of the garden (ornamental, kitchen, herb and fruit), the grape vine and other fruits used to produce drinks.         Autographed letter signed to the Viceroy of Mexico, Conde de Revillagigedo

1790 - Malaspina´s manuscript report of the progress of the expedition, with an account of the route taken, addressed to the Viceroy of Mexico. 12 June 1790. Lima. In 4to (228 mm x 188 mm). 3 pp. Manuscript on paper, watermarked "D. & C. Blauw”; traces of small red wax seal, small tear at foot of fold affecting one word. A fascinating letter by Malaspina, addressed to Juan Vicente de Guemes, Viceroy of Mexico (1789 – 1794), describing the year he has spent since parting from the viceroy in Cadiz, around the coast from Buenos Aires to Lima. The “Malaspina” expedition (1789 – 1794) was arguably the most significant Spanish scientific exploration performed in the 18th century, designed and modeled under the influences of those of the British Cook, and the French La Perouse. The letter is signed from Lima, detailing to the Viceroy the progress and route taking by the expedition during its 11 months, and giving a detailed account of the places visited; beginning with a strange note, telling the Viceroy he wishes not to come to him as a traitor, but as someone who wishes to manifest his everlasting recognition for the many favors granted upon him, and continues the note expressing his joy for the success had so far in the expedition, carried out between Buenos Aires (the expedition first landed in Montevideo) and Lima, and the many astronomical and scientific discoveries made: “Mi estimadissimo favorecedor: Ya ha pasado un año que me separado de Ud. en Cadiz con animo de venir a cogerle por la espalda no como Traidor, si bien como una Persona que desea manifestarle su perpetuo reconocimiento por los muchos favores que le ha merecido siempre viajando toda la costa comprendida entre Buenos Ayres, y Lima, y agregandole muchos conocimientos Astronomicos, y Fisicos”. Malaspina promises then to send a detailed account from Acapulco, and begins with the derrotero of the expedition, beginning at Montevideo, exploring the coast of the Patagonia, Puerto Deseado, the Falklands (even then disputed, and considered a point of geo-political importance), Tierra del Fuego, Cabo de Hornos, and up the Pacific, all the way to Lima, after exploring Chiloe (mapping the region, collecting zoological and botanical samples, and meeting with the Huiliches natives) and Valparaiso (the corvettes separated at this point, to gain time, the Atrevida exploring the coast of Valparaiso, whilst the Descubierta sailed to the islands of Juan Fernandez, the alleged location of Robinson Crusoe). The vessels would reunite at the port of Callao, giving course to a prolonged stay in Lima (arriving in 20 May, and staying for approximately three months), re-provisioning and repairing the Descubierta and the Atrevida, it would also give time to the scientists to give order to the vast amount of material taken so far. He then states how pleased he is that the abuses of the previous minister have been remedied, though he thinks it will be too difficult to reach the capital [Mexico], as it would take too much time away from the expedition, and the only delay in Acapulco will be to re-provisioning of the ships. The expedition had goals of political, economic, and scientific nature, which required a consistent crew to achieve them: astronomers and cartographers (Dionisio Galeano, Cayetano Valdes), draughtsman (Jose Cardero, Jose del Pozo, Juan Ravenent, Fernando Brambila, to name but a few), naturalists (Tadeo Haenke) and scientists joined the expedition. The main goals were to improve the scientific knowledge of the American domains, providing the crown with a better cartographical and hydrographical knowledge of the ports and coastlines, analyzing the state of affairs of the Viceroyalties (for which the Commanders Alejandro Malaspina and Jose de Bustamante y Guerra were provided with extensive authority to request any documents necessary by the local Officials), to collect zoological and botanical samples, in all, to better understand the American colonies and thus been able to bett

Matted. A fine perspective view of Place de Montarcher, one of the major public spaces in Le Cap-Français, modern-day Cap-Haïtien, with the large Vallière & Montarcher fountain at center, surrounded by a lively street scene. Le Cap-Français was by far the richest port city in the colony, which helped transform Saint Domingue from a languid outpost into one of France's most profitable and richest colonies by the time of the French Revolution. Observations on the Authenticity of Bruce's Travels in Abyssinia; in reply to some passages in Brown's travels through Egypt, Africa, and Syria. Newcastle: printed by T. Cadell, sold by T. An exceptional copy in original boards of the first edition of a work that offers the unusual combination of an important travel book that is also beautifully written. Together with a rare author's presentation copy of Richard Wharton's work in support of Bruce (no copies are listed as having sold at auction in the last thirty years). James Bruce, Laird of Kinnaird (1730-1794), arrived in Alexandria, Egypt, in July 1768 having determined to discover the source of the Nile which he believed to be in Abyssinia (Ethiopia). Traveling via Cairo, Thebes and the Red Sea he reached Gondar in Abyssinia in 1770. He stayed there for two years before finally reaching the source of the Blue Nile, and in 1771, he also found its confluence with the White Nile. This work is particularly important for its portrayal of Ethiopia, then little-known, for its literary merits, and for the final volume on natural history. "Bruce especially prepared himself for this arduous task by acquainting himself with conditions in Africa, with instruments for taking bearings, and with some skill in medicine. This latter accomplishment proved to be very valuable, as, saving some members of the royal family of Abyssinia from the smallpox, he gained needed favors. Besides he was of magnificent proportions physically and a superb horseman, both of which factors assisted him to the good graces of the Abyssinians. He might have spared himself some attacks on his veracity had he bettered his information on what had been accomplished by the Jesuits in their expeditions and explorations for the source of the Blue Nile. Probably he really believed at the time when he stood barefooted by the little fountain whence flows out the beginnings of the Blue Nile, that he was the first white man to gaze on and identify these waters. As it was, the doubts of the truthfulness of his narrative were numerous, occasioning several parodies, best known of which are the Travels of Baron Munchausen. They also caused him to delay for many years the publication of his journals. The result of his travels was a very great enrichment of the knowledge of geography and ethnography" (Cox). "[Bruce] had not reached the source of the true Nile, but only that of its considerable tributary …. He was also in error … in regarding himself as the first European who had reached these fountains. … There is a sense, however, in which Bruce may be more justly esteemed the discoverer of the fount of the Blue Nile than [the Jesuit Pedro] Paez, who stumbled upon it by accident [in 1615], and, absorbed by missionary zeal, thought little of the exploit to which Bruce had dedicated his life" (DNB). Blackmer 221; Cox I, pp. 388-389; Ibrahim-Hilmy I, p. 91; Pritzel 1256 (Volume V only).

DECLARATION DE MONSIEUR LE GOUVERNEUR GENERAL, SUR L'INTERPRETATION DES DECRETS DES 8 & 28 MARS.

Port-au-Prince: De L'Imprimerie de Mozard, 1790. - 10pp. Original paper wrappers, gathered signatures. Very clean. Untrimmed and partially unopened. Very good. A statement by Peynier, governor- general of the colony Saint Dominigue, concerning the decrees set forth by the National Assembly and their application and effect on the colony. These decrees came at a crucial time for Saint Domingue as the French Revolution gained momentum and began to exert a real influence on the colonies. Many of the large plantation owners hoped to bring about independence from France and to assert a more powerful role for the aristocracy of the colony. Peynier's tenure was marked by his loyalty to the state and his opposition to the Assembly with whom he fruitlessly tried to negotiate. An interesting declaration prepared just as the French Revolution was gaining momentum and at the cusp of the slave revolt which would soon follow in Saint Domingue. Rare, with only two copies located in OCLC, at Columbia and new York Public Library.

        [Marshal Turenne]

1790. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of two creased tears on the right margin. Tiny tear on top margin. Image size: 18 3/8 x 15 inches. A fine proof impression of Bouteloup's striking portrait of Marshal Turenne, one of France's most celebrated military heroes. Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne was one of France's greatest military commanders. The son of the duc de Bouillon, Turenne was born in Sedan in 1611. By the time of his death in 1675, Turenne had risen to the rank of Marshal of France, after leading a career that inspired Napoleon to list him as one of France's most important captains. He showed his capabilities during the Thirty Years War, when he distinguished himself with countless victories, and played a pivotal role in the Dutch Wars under Louis XIV. He was killed at the battle of Sasbach in 1675, and his remains were later moved by Napoleon to Les Invalides in Paris. This triumphant engraving by Louis Alexandre Bouteloup reproduces a celebrated sculpture of Turenne by Robert Guillaume Dardel. Dardel was the pupil of Augustin Pajou, but he did not become a member of the Academie Royale until 1791. He exhibited primarily at the Salon de Correspondence, and since he was denied access to the royal marble his works are mostly modeled in terracotta and bronze. Dardel cast this commemorative bronze statue of Turenne for his patron, Prince Louis-Joseph de Conde, in 1785, and it is considered one of his most successful works.
