Voyage from New South Wales to Canton, in the year 1788, with Views of the Islands discovered

London: J. Debrett, 1789. A very good copy.. Quarto, with an engraved vignette on the title and four large folding plates; handsomely bound in half speckled calf, spine gilt-ruled with raised bands, the Coles copy with his bookplate. First edition of this rare (indeed sometimes forgotten) First Fleet book, which also describes the first trading voyage out of Port Jackson in 1788. Captain Thomas Gilbert was part of the establishment of the first European settlement at Port Jackson as commander of the Charlotte, the 335-ton First Fleet transport that carried over 100 convicts to Australia. Charlotte left Port Jackson on 6 May 1788 bound for China to take on a cargo of tea under charter to the East India Company. Travelling with Captain Gilbert was Captain John Marshall on the Scarborough, another First Fleet ship that had delivered 208 convicts to the newly established colony.Gilbert records in small detail the voyage to and his subsequent stay in Port Jackson. 'I had on board my ship upwards of one hundred and thirty convicts, male and female: many of the former were fellows of a most abandoned and desperate character?; I took leave of Governor Phillip? and here let me embrace the opportunity? of acknowledging? the civilities I received from those gentlemen; among whom I would particularly notice that valuable officer Captain Hunter.' Gilbert also makes much mention of the constant fight to hold scurvy at bay 'we hauled? for fish as often as possible, but we found, that though this kind of food might palliate in some degree, the violence of the scurvy, it did not prove an effectual remedy.'Gilbert goes on to describe their voyage to Canton, the first trading voyage to be undertaken out of Port Jackson. En route he discovered the Gilbert and Marshall islands, naming them for himself and his fellow captain. The Voyage from New South Wales to Canton was designed to be a companion volume to surgeon John White's Account of the Voyage to Botany Bay and the Establishment of the Colony at Port Jackson. The two works are very occasionally found bound together, and in fact the publisher's advertisement for White's journal at the end of this volume notes that 'the above being uniformly printed to bind with Captain Gilbert's Voyage, may be bound together or separate'.

[LETTER, SIGNED FROM GEN. HENRY KNOX TO GEN. ANTHONY WAYNE, CONCERNING THE CREEK INDIANS]

New York, 1789. [4]pp. Folio, on a folded sheet. Old folds, minor soiling and wear, docketed on final page. Very good. Letter signed from Secretary of War Henry Knox to Maj. Gen. Anthony Wayne discussing the actions of Creek leader Alexander McGillivray. Knox writes that McGillivray has persuaded the Creek Nation not to sign a treaty with the United States, and speculates about his motive in doing so. Knox acknowledges the report that Spain agreed to recognize the Creek lands east of the Mississippi, discussing the possibility of military engagement with the Creeks after Congress returns from recess, promising to send 200 men to the Georgia frontier, and stating that he gave his letter to the President. The United States suspected (correctly) that Spain was paying McGillivary off. Knox writes: "Mr. McGillivray's influence over the Creeks has been exerted to ill effect in persuading that nation against an immediate treaty with the United States upon the terms the Commissioners offered. He has sacrificed the interests of the Nation to his own avarice. The apprehension of others participating in the trade of the Creeks, and perhaps the engagements he is under to Spain agre[e]ably to your information has been the cause of his conduct. "You state Mr. Osborne's information to you 'that on his Sacred honor that he both saw and read the ratification by Charles the 4th the present King of Spain, of a treaty between the Spanish and the Creek Nations, guaranteeing to the Indians all they possess or claim on the east side of the Mississippi.' But is it not very extraordinary that he concealed this important information from the Commissioners? They assure me that he never intimated this fact to them. I am nearly in opinion with you of the force necessary for the coercion of the Creeks, excepting it should be larger and no Militia. I am not for employing Militia excepting in case of the last resort.... "During the recess of Congress nothing can be decided upon, as the two Houses possess the constitutional right of making war. They will with difficulty be brought into the measure unless the necessity shall be apparent. If the Creeks make inroads into Georgia it must be presumed the Government will act with decision and vigor.... [T]wo hundred men will be recruited as soon as possible and transported to Georgia, to be placed on the frontiers of that State...." McGillivray did eventually manage to negotiate the Treaty of New York (Aug. 7, 1790) between the United States and the Creeks, though it was short-lived, and an alliance with Spain was renewed in 1792. Henry Knox served as the first U.S. Secretary of War, and much of his tenure was concerned with Indian affairs.

Deinology: or, the union of reason and elegance: being instructions to a young barrister. With a postscript, suggesting some considerations on the viva voce examination of witnesses at the English bar. By Hortensius.

London: G.G.J. and J. Robinson. 1789. 8vo., (4) + vii + (1) + 234pp., tiny hole in one leaf just affecting a couple of letters, with the armorial bookplate and signature of James Tomkinson>*, bound in contemporary sprinkled calf, neatly rebacked, spine gilt with original crimson lettering piece. A very good, crisp, copy. First, and only, edition. The oratory of the English bar is 'wild and vicious', claims 'Hortensius', and compares ill with both the eloquence of the French bar and even that of the Scotch. ('The Scotch advocates speak and write often elegantly, always correctly'). The author's object was to 'render the principles of logic and rhetoric somewhat more familiar to the English bar', and in addition, to offer 'some few loose thoughts of my own in the form of an advice to a young barrister'. * Probably James Tomkinson (1840-1910), the English landowner and Liberal politician of Willington Hall, Chester.

        Compendium memorabilium Aegypti.

Tubingen: Johann Georg Cotta, 1789 - Arabic text; edited by Joseph White. viii, 157 pages. 8vo, 210x134, marginal foxing, owner’s stamp on title, accession number on next leaf, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary stamp on blank last page. One of the earliest works on Egyptology, this crucial work contains detailed descriptions of ancient Egyptian monuments, as well as a vivid description of a famine caused, during the author’s residence in Egypt, by the Nile failing to overflow its banks. On this occasion ABD Al-Latif had opportunity to observe and examine a large number of corpses - one of the earliest examples of a postmortem autopsy. - The Arabic manuscript was discovered in 1665 by Edward Pococke and preserved at the Bodleian Library. In 1789 Joseph White published this edition in the original Arabic, he later on published another edition with the latin version and notes in 1800. This being the First Edition in Arabic is much rarer than the more common Oxford edition of 1800. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1- A la Nation provençale. 11 février 1789. S.l.n.d.

(Martin & Walter, 24491). Bon exemplaire, relié à l'époque. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Begum B-Rke to Begum Bow, a poetical Rhapsody on cotemporary [sic] Characters. With a Dedication to the Right Honourable Lord G---ge G-rd-n, in Newgate, and Notes by the Editor.

Printed for T. Thornton . [ 1789]., London - Sole edition, an assassinatory satire on the troubled Edmund Burke on the eve of the French Revolution. The Monthly Review helpfully explained the mysterious title to contemporaries: 'a 'Begum' being a princess of the harem of Hindustan, and the poem purporting to be in the voice of Burke, who has transmigrated into such princess, addressed to one of his sisters in the harem.' Burke was the most prominent political victim of the regency crisis surrounding the onset of King George's madness in 1788. He alienated both King and Regent and many of his own party in advocating (like Fox) an immediate transfer of power to the Regent. In Begum B-rke to Begum Bow he bewails his fate as the king temporarily recovers his mind: 'The King restor'd still keeps his Treas'ry Boy (Pitt), / And half the nation will go mad with joy.' 4to (282 × 205 mm), pp. vii, [1], 20, complete with half-title; uncut, stab sewn as issued; slight creasing at gutters, half-title with light old staining; small library stamp to p. 20 (Cardiff Public Libraries). [Jackson p. 146; scarce: ESTC lists UK copies at BL (2), Cambridge, Bodley, Sheffield, NT (Nostell Priory) and US copies at Harvard, Huntington and Yale (2).]

A Berlin, 1752. William Beresford was a Quaker who served as supercargo aboard the 200-ton Queen Charlotte, George Dixon (1748-1795), commander. While Dixon edited, provided the introduction, the appendixes, and the maps for this volume, most of the text consists of a series of forty-nine letters written by Beresford. They make good reading and are an excellent source on the early days of fur trading in the Pacific Northwest. Beresford's text is here complete and provides a salty sea-tale for those who enjoy the genre. PROVENANCE: Theodore Jesse Hoover (1871-1955) was the brother of President Herbert Hoover. Theodore Hoover graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Geology and Mining in 1901. In 1911 Hoover entered private practice as a consulting mining and metallurgical engineer with offices in London and San Francisco. His private practice was very successful; Hoover held positions of consulting engineer, managing director, director, and president of many mining companies in America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. T. J. Hoover could have purchased any copy of any book he wanted, but instead he bought this ragged dog of a book. And now, you can own it too!         Obelisco e piazza di Montecitorio

1789 - Acquaforte e bulino, 1789 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Dimensioni 515x725. Etching with engraving, about 1789, signed in plate lower right. Beautiful proof, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "Fabriano", with margins, small tear on the right side perfectly restored, otherwise in excellent condition. The work is printed at the final settlement of the square of the House, designed by architect Giovanni Antinori. In 1789, in fact, Pius VI gave Antinori to task the center of the square with the obelisk which the Emperor Augustus had brought to Rome. The stele - found in 1748 near Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina - came from Heliopolis where he was raised in honor of Psammetichus II, between 594 and 589 BC, to commemorate the victory over the Ethiopians. On top, Pius VI took place was a globe of bronze with a central slot through which, at noon, the sun passes, drawing a bright spot in the shade so that the obelisk casts on the floor of the square, in memory of function gnomon, the dial of which had already been drawn on the floor of a plaza at San Lorenzo in Lucina, to which the Emperor Augustus had intended. Work of great rarity. Size 515x725. Dimensioni [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
