Paris: Letellier, 1789. Octavo; contemporary French mottled calf. One of two French editions of Tench's Narrative published in 1789. This is thus either the first or the second French publication on settled Australia, and one of the very earliest descriptions in French of the appearance of La Pérouse at Botany Bay in 1788.Two French editions of Tench's Narrative were published in 1789, of uncertain priority; the other was published by Knapen fils. This is the more extended version and includes a long, 85-page section about the history of discovery entitled "Récit historique de la découverte de la Nouvelle Hollande et du nouveau Pays de Galles Méridional". The economic historian K.M. Dallas sees this section as significant evidence in the continuing debate about the reasons for the decision to settle New South Wales. This copy, like all those we have examined, does not have a folding map: Ferguson mentions there being one in the National Library's copy but that is almost certainly an addition; no map is mentioned in the "Table" Preliminaries browned, scattered foxing, spine worn, joints restored, later endpapers. A good copy.

Two volumes bound in one. [8],64pp., plus eleven leaves of folding tables; [8],58pp., plus eleven leaves of folding tables. Half titles. Quarto. Contemporary full red calf, gilt ruled, a.e.g. Second work printed on light blue paper. Occasional light foxing, otherwise clean. A fine copy. Two truly exceptional examples of early printing from Saint Domingue, containing financial reports for the French colony compiled by François Barbé-Marbois, the colonial Intendant. Barbé-Marbois had a long career as a French politician and diplomat, including significant service in the United States during the Revolution and early Republic, eventually negotiating the treaty that settled the Louisiana Purchase. From 1785 to 1789, however, he served as the Intendant of the French Caribbean colonies. While there, he instituted a series of controversial reforms that angered the elite plantation owners, who ultimately succeeded in forcing him out. The two present works comprise a financial account of his time in charge of the colony. Together, they provide an extraordinarily detailed and invaluable picture of the economic state of the island just prior to the Haitian Revolution, when it was the most prosperous of all of the European colonies in the Caribbean. Each work is broken into sections describing not only the general state of the economy, but also individual accounts and funds related to the operation of the colonial government, accompanied by folding tables that provide accounting for each economic area. Of particular interest are the overall economic appraisal of the island, information on trade and manufacturing, the finances of the French Navy in Saint Domingue, as well as expenses and revenues associated with government involvement in the slave trade. The successor to Barbé-Marbois, Vincent-René de Proisy, praised him highly for his efforts, writing in his subsequent financial assessment of the colony in 1790 that: "C'est à M. de Marbois que la colonie doit l'avantage d'avoir une connoissance entière de la manutention de ses diverses branches de revenu royal et colonial; je n'ai trouvé dans sa correspondence avec le ministre du roi aucun ordre qui l'ait obligé à publier les résultats de cette partie de son administration, mais j'ai trouvé la preuve que S.M. avoit daigné applaudir à l'exécution du projet qu'il en avoit formée à son arrivée dans la colonie...." These works are significant not solely for the valuable historical information they contain, but also as Caribbean imprints of outstanding quality and execution. Published in Port-au-Prince by Mozard, the principal colonial printer on Saint Domingue, these imprints display a composition and complexity that is extremely unusual for Caribbean printing of this period, and exceeds the quality of any contemporaneous North American and some European printing. They are certainly the finest examples of the many specimens of Saint Domingue printing handled by this firm. Both works are printed on thick paper; the second work is printed on a light blue paper stock. According to LeClerc, only a very small number of either imprint was published on the island itself, before they were republished by the royal printer in Paris in 1790. LECLERC 1364, 1366. SABIN 3304, 3305.

        Dictionnaire de physique

New edition, after the original was published in 1761 in Avignon. A supplement to the dictionary, printed in 1787, was integrated into alphabetical order in this edition. 2 boards déplliantes in Volume I of which ballooning the frontispiece; 5 folding plates in volume II; 3 folding plates in Volume III; 3 folding plates in Volume IV; 2 folding plates in Volume V; or 15 boards. Half sheepskin brunette small corners slightly later vellum. Smooth back wheels decorated in Greek. Piece of red morocco and volume number of black morocco (adorned with a laurel wreath). Good copy. Dictionary of Physics Paulian enjoyed some success and was reprinted many times with additions; its success lies in the width of the sound spectrum study - the divining rod, scientists, comets, and arid parts of arithmetic, until the last aerostatic experiments - and didactic quality articles; Paulian, long time professor at Avignon in fact this talent to explain the most complex in an affordable way without betraying things is particularly the case for the Newtonian system which he was particularly fond.         An Account of the Principal Lazarettos in Europe; with Various Papers Relative to the Plague: Together with Further Observations on Some Foreign Prisons and Hospitals; and Additional Remarks on the Present State of Those in Great Britain and Ireland; [bound with] Appendix, Containing Observations Concerning Foreign Prisons and Hospitals: Collected by Mr Howard in His Concluding Tour.

First edition. 4to., pp. viii, 259, [xv]; [ii], 32 + 23 engraved plates (many of which folding), including a very large table. With half-title and leaf of instructions to binder bound in. Odd spots of foxing and the occasional light ink smudge, sporadic light toning; several plates with closed tears near attachments, 3 of which significant, plate edges often lightly crumpled, occasional foxing, faint dampstain to fore-edge margin of final 2 plates. Contemporary marbled calf recently rebacked plainly but competently, green morocco gilt spine label, edges coloured yellow, marbled endpapers, cloth-reinforced hinges. Joints a little creased, edges rubbed and corners wearing but a sound, handsome copy. The price of 'Twelve Shillings unbound' is printed below the imprint (omitted in some copies). Howard (1726?-1790) spent 15 months from 1785, travelling throughout western and southern Europe inspecting lazarettos (quarantine stations) for the treatment of plague victims. Here we find the result of his work, An Account of the Principal Lazarettos in Europe, published at Warrington in 1789. In it he surveys conditions in lazarettos, prisons and hospitals, going into great detail and making observations and suggestions for their improvement. He organises his findings by first by country, and then by county when he gets to Ireland, Scotland and England. Writing near the end of his life, he also reflects on his own efforts at reform. Of the Gaol at Southwark he writes that prisoners awaiting transportation to Australia 'lay almost perishing in the gaol': 'I am persuaded this would have been in great measure prevented, if penitentiary houses had been built on the salutory spot at Islington fixed on by Dr. Fothergill and myself: the gentlemen whose continual opposition defeated the design, and adopted the expensive, dangerous and destructive scheme of transportation to Botany Bay, I leave to their own reflections upon their conduct.' (p.147). Howard set off again on his travels a few years later but died of fever at Kherson in southern Russia on 20th January 1790. The results of his final travels are found in the added Appendix here. 'His death was announced in the London Gazette (1790, 174), a unique honour for a civilian, and his statue, the first to be admitted to the cathedral, was erected by public subscription in St Paul's.' Folio, 12.7*21 cms).Smith, moral philosopher and political economist, whose Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry. Though often criticized for its rambling structure, historical digressions, and over-abundance of 'curious facts', the work has a single unifying theme which takes on further ramifications as it is unfolded. As the full title makes clear, it is an enquiry into the nature of wealth, how its benefits should be measured or judged. See ODNB.

Except for the lacking portrait a fine, unsophisticated copy. ----FIRST EDITION, exceedingly rare. "Two papers responding to the prize question on plant nutrition set by the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences for 1782 and resubmitted in 1788. There is an appendix by Wolff, the larger second section of the book, Von der eigenthümlichen und wesentlichen Kraft der vegetabilischen sowohl als auch der animalischen Substanz. This is cited as a separate item in Gaissinovitch's D.S.B. article, but it was not published independently. This was a crucial period in the history of the theories of plant nutrition, begun by Ingenhousz's discovery of photosynthesis (1779) but only fully developed when Lavoisier's new chemistry was assimilated. This is discussed by Sachs (History of Botany, 1890, pp. 494), though he does not mention these prize essays on the subject. Wolff is a key Figure in the history of botany, the first since Malpighi and Grew to devote attention to plant anatomy. His Theoria Generationis (1759), which established the theory of epigenesis, laid the foundation of our understanding of the development of plant cells. *William Lister (1757?-1830), the former (perhaps first) owner of this copy took his MD at Edinburgh in 1781. He settled in London and was physician to St. Thomas' Hospital. He was a good classical scholar. (Munk II, pp. 329-7)" R. Gaskell, Books from the Library of Walter Pagel, Pt. 2, 16. This book is very rare with no copy in the USA and the U.K. according to OCLC/Worldcat. Very Good.
