Cfr. Cohen 935.

        Mrs. Goodall

London: Published by R. Sayer & Co. Fleet Street, Nov. 20, 1789. Stipple, colour printed a la poupée. Printed on wove paper. Collectors blindstamp of a star in left margin. Collectors mark not identified in Lugt but attributed to the eighteenth century. In excellent condition. 9 x 7 3/8 inches. 17 x 11 9/16 inches. This charming colour-printed portrait by Robert Laurie depicts the celebrated actress Charlotte Goodall in the character of Adeline in "The Battle of Hexham". Charlotte Goodall (1766- 1830) was the daughter of Stanton, who managed a "sharing company" in Staffordshire. She joined the stage at an early age, and made her first successful début in Bath as Rosalind in "As You Like It." She made a name for herself as a Shakespearean actress in the provinces and quickly joined Kemble's Drury Lane theatre in London. She was primarily a supporting actress, working with such noted thespians as Mrs. Farren and Mrs. Jordan, but she was known for her roles in "breechers parts," playing such noted cross-dressers as Viola in "Twelfth Night," and Adeline in George Coleman's "The Battle of Hexham." It is in this celebrated role, as the cross-dressing Adeline, that Laurie depicts Mrs. Goodall. "The Battle of Hexham" was a three-act musical drama in which an abandoned wife, Adeline, disguises herself as a soldier in order to search for her fugitive husband, Gondibert. Dictionary of National Biography; O'Donoghue, Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits... in the British Museum 4; Lugt, Les Marques de Collections 2872.

335 S. Pappband d. Zt. Meusel VI, 321; ADB XIV, 659 (irrig 1781); Curtis Schuh`s Biobibliography of Mineralogy (Online Cat.), Nr 6; vgl. Ferguson I, 440ff. - "All his life had been devoted to the investigation of nature, and in some 36 books and papers he had recorded his views in the mathematical, mining, and occult sciences. On account of his reputed knowledge of chemistry, he became a member of the Rosicrucian Society. He was, however, attacked by Kopp, who calls his work a `coagulum of nonsense` and considers that he has given proof that the science of the later Rosicrusians was `pseudo-science of the most contemptible kind.` He believed strongly in alchemy." (Schuh).

Two fine etchings depicting the "Battle of Öland" in 1789 between the swedish and the russian fleet´s. The battle was a draw, and the swedish fleet was not able to prevent the two russians sea forces to merge which made the russians to gain the advantage and lock the swedish fleet into the naval base of Karlskrona. Duke Karl, to become king Karl XIII, led the battle but blamed the officer Per Lilliehorn for the debacle, since the part of the fleet under his command stod idle during the combat. The artist Johan Petter Cumelin, was present during the fight and was commissioned by Duke Karl to create serie of etchings depicting the battle. The serie consits of twelve etchings, here we have two of them. These images are very rare

n.p.Approximately 300 double pages, including nearly 150 woodblock illustrations. Original wrappers with printed labels; interior with minor browning and occasional wormholes, otherwise a fine and complete copy preserved in a folding box. Probably one of the earliest illustrated accounts of Japanese medicine, compiled by the famous court physician Tamba Gentoku, also known as Taki Angen. The illustrations, many botanical in nature, cover every phase of emergency treatment, including revival of the drowned or intoxicated by artificial respiration and treatment by massage (see illustrations in Castiglioni in his History of Medicine). Of particular interest is an illustration of the most famous of all moxa spots ("sanri"), located on the antero-lateral aspect of the (left) leg, with detailed directions on how to "know" it. Among the many aspects of emergency medicine, the author treats the following: Vol. I. Loss of consciousness, including apoplexy, sexual intercourse, paralysis, sunstroke, cholera, epilepsy, intoxication, etc.; Vol. II Vomiting blood, blood in urine, jaundice, deafness, obstructed urethra, lockjaw, wounds, cuts, contususions, eye injury, scalds and burns, frostbite, etc.; Vol. III.         Stirling Castle

London: Published by J. Grives, 103 Strand, March 16, 1789. Colour-printed aquatint with additional hand-colouring. Lovely contemporary colour. As usual text line is attached on verso of sheet. In excellent condition. Trimmed as usual and mounted on washline background. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 11 9/16 x 17 inches. 17 1/8 x 20 9/16 inches. A wonderful view of Stirling Castle, Scotland, in the grand tradition of the picturesque English landscape. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. At the same time the concept of the picturesque landscape developed amongst artists and printmakers across England and Europe. As an aesthetic theory the picturesque presents an idealized and sentimentalized view of nature. Using this concept, artists strove to depict nature as an aesthetic form, which was designed to evoke awe and amazement in the viewer. This practice developed a visual language for landscape painting that dominated the genre until the onset of the twentieth century. The effects of the picturesque on landscape painting, in a large measure, forms the way we see the countryside today, and the manner in which we perceive and interpret "beauty". According to "the picturesque" nature is wild and abandoned yet it conforms to a symmetrical structure that defines a sense of beauty and visual harmony. This is a wonderful example of a picturesque eighteenth century landscape print. By trimming the image within the platemark and mounting it on a decorative washline background the print has the effect of a landscape painting. The likeness is heightened by the addition of added body colour in the image and the use of a heavy painterly technique of engraving. This practice was common amongst engravers and printsellers who wished to capitalize on this trend for picturesque landscapes of the English countryside. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection, which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints. Clayton, The English Print 1688-1802 p. 155; Lugt, Les Marques de Collections, (Supplement) 2715a

Atlas Juvenilis eller Geographiska Chartor till ungdomens tienst i methodisk ordning författade af And. Åkerman (..)

1789 or later. 16,5 x 20 cm. Title + 30 maps. Calf spine. Modern marbled paper at the boards. Red label with title in gilt at the spine. Modern end papers. Four maps with extensive annotations at the verso. The maps paginated by hand in the upper margin. Inner front hinge starting to crack. Title with a couple of added letters by hand at the authors name. The Sweden map crudely repaired, with small paper losses in two corners A few minor stains. Maps in nice condition, better than in most other copies.. The atlas has a beautiful title page with an engraved border, typical for the late 18th century. The hand coloured maps have a charming simplicity. Several of the maps folds out. A rare text volume to the atlas was also published, not present here. Atlas Juvenilis is an early swedish school atlas, probably only preceeded by the very rare Ziervogel atlas of 1758. Atlas Juvenilis was a great success from the start and it was published in several states and editions until 1815. This atlas has the same title as the second edition of 1774 (first edition 1768) but published 1789 or later, since it contains the new 1789 map of Sweden by Fredrik Akrel. Anders Åkerman is best known for his globe production in Uppsala under the superintendence of "Kosmografiska Sällskapet", in the 1760s. and 1770s

Hanover: Christian Ritscher, 1789 First and only edition of a philosophical manual written by the fourteen-year old Baroness Philippine von Knigge (1775-1841). She was the daughter of Adolf von Knigge (1752-1796), author of several satirical novels and best known for Ãœber den Umgang mit Menschen (1788), "a work of practical wisdom on the conduct of life" (Garland). In later years, Philippine von Knigge translated Richard Brinsley Sheridan's life of Swift, together with her father (1795), and wrote by herself Lebensregeln aus den besten ältern und neueren Schriftstellern (1799). All of her works are rare. Contemporary brown cloth over decorative boards, paper spine label with title in manuscript. . Small octavo. Silhouette portrait vignette on title-page. Spine ends, edges of boards rubbed. Occasional light foxing. Former owner's rubberstamp on front free endpaper and dedication page. A very good copy. This highly original work, for the young author states that no other work has been consulted, is the fruit of lessons in philosophy given by her father, and is published here that it might benefit women interested in the subject. It is divided into five sections: 1) of ideas or concepts; b) of symbolic knowledge; c) of judgments and theses; e) of conclusion and syllogisms. The whole is introduced by a preface detailing the use of logic and its place in philosophy, and concludes with some practical examples.

Beautiful marbled endpapers. An excellent example showing minimal use & wear at the tips. "Portlock and Dixon, who had been with Captain Cook, made this expedition to the northwest coast of America to collect furs for a group of London merchants. Portlock, the Commander-in-Chief, was on the King George. The expedition left Gravesend August 29, 1785, and arrived at the Sandwich Islands via Cape Horn in May 1786. The mouth of Cook's River in Alaska was reached July 18 and the rest of the summer was spent in sailing down the Coast as far as Nootka Sound. The expedition wintered in the Sandwich Islands and in 1788 proceeded to Prince William Sound where they met Captain Meares. The vessels parted company in May, with Portlock exploring the Alaskan coast and Dixon sailing again for Nootka Sound, where he named 'Dixon's Entrance' and the 'Queen Charlotte Islands.' The furs were sold in Canton, China, and both ships, after a most successful voyage, arrived back in England by way of Cape Good Hope in the summer of 1788. "The account, except for the introduction by Dixon and the two appendices, is in a series of forty-nine letters signed 'W.B.' The writer was William Beresford, a Quaker who, says Dixon in his introduction, 'has been totally unused to literary pursuits, and equally so to a sea-faring life.' Notwithstanding this, his letters, corrected by Dixon on nautical points, make good reading and the book is an excellent authority for the early days of fur trading on the northwest coast" (Streeter). Dixon also contributed the valuable maps. The work is sometimes confused with Portlock's account of the voyage, published the same year under the same title. Bell B204. Howes D-365. JCB II 3270.
