Der Geisterseher. Eine Geschichte aus den Memoires des Grafen von O**. Erstausg.

Leipzig, Georg Joachim Göschen, 1789.. 338 S., mit gest. Frontispiz (Die Hexe von Endor), Kl.-8°, Goldgepr. Halbleder d. Zt. mit fünf Bünden. Bloch 2/999 (zur Ausg. 1796).

        Posthumous Works

London: G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1789. London: G. G. J. and J. Robinson,, 1789. Translated from the French. 5 volumes, octavo (204 × 126 mm). Contemporary tree calf, spines gilt in compartments, green morocco labels, speckled edges. Portrait frontispiece. Bookplates, with ownership inscription to front pastedown of volume 1. Spines and extremities rubbed, ends of spines bumped, some tenderness or starting to upper joints, partial tanning to endpapers, leaves otherwise fresh. A very good set. First English edition. The works of Frederick the Great find themselves in interesting hands in this first English translation. Thomas Holcroft, who was at the time of publication a popular playwright, would soon become more famous for his radical politics, in particular his association with William Godwin, and his trial for treason in 1794 (in which he was defended by Thomas Erskine without fee and acquitted). This book, published on the cusp of the French Revolution, marks an early stage in Holcroft's development. In the preface he reveals his complex relationship to his subject, first asserting his anti-monarchist credentials, "Europe, it is true, is rousing from her slumbers. Men begin to understand something of their own worth, and the general system of despotism totters", and then fixing himself to the task of faithfully translating the works and opinions of a complex man, "however pernicious they might be at some moments, and virtuous or magnanimous at others". An attractively bound set.

        Aspasie [Opera poster]

Paris, 1789. Paris, 1789. Aspasie [Opera poster]. Paris, 1789. Large poster (20" x 16"). Woodcut on paper, laid down on card. Stained, some loss to top right and left margin, with very slight loss at upper right corner of the woodcut. This rare poster advertises the upcoming performances at L'Academie Royale de Musique for March 12-17, 1789. The performances mentioned include the very first performance of the opera Aspasie, a current hit by Sacchini Arvire et Evelina (premiered 1788); a popular opera by Rousseau, Le Devin du Village (premiered 1752); and a representation of Gluck's Iphigenie en Tauride (premiered 1779)*. Aspasie is an opera in 3 acts, with music by Gretry, book by Morel de Chedeville, ballet choreographed by Pierre-Gabriel Gardel. Principal singers: Maillard, Gavaudan, M. Laine, and M. Cheron. Ballets: Guimard and M. Gardel. Twelve performances of Aspasie were held until June 21, 1789 when its scheduled performance was canceled because Necker closed all the theatres of Paris (Pitou, 55-6). Staged only once more on August 4, 1789, it was not revived due to both the troubled times and its outdated theme of young lovers in the lyceum of ancient Athens. These large advertisement posters for theatre are extremely rare. They were almost always destroyed by removal or by covering since only 153 walls and doors throughout the city of Paris could bear advertisements for the royal theatres (Howarth, 460, note 2). *Until 1789, theatre posters carried only the name of the company, the venue, the date, the attraction, occasionally the time, the ticket price, and the details of coming attractions. Gluck is the only composer mentioned in the poster, a fact that indicates his growing popularity (Iphigenie en Tauride had its premier ten years earlier). Reference: Howarth, French theatre in the neo-classical era 1550-1789 (1997); Lajarte I, 362-3 (CCCVIII); Pitou, The Paris Opera II (1985).

A Course of Lectures on the Figurative Language of the Holy Scripture and the Interpretation of it from the Scripture Itself

London - G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1789. London - G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1789 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A second edition of these Lectures by William Jones, the British clergyman and author, known as the William Jones of Nayland, from the private library of the well-known Theologian and Professor of Philosophy, David Arthur Pailin. Pailinalludes toJoness Hutchinsonian concern with the details of the biblical text whichis reflected in these lectures. In the opening series of eleven lectures on the language of the bible, he examines the distinctiveness of that language and, in particular, the way in which it contains both a plain and a figurative sense (p. 26). (David Arthur Pailin). In order to interpret its significance, it is accordingly necessary to be aware of the different figures or symbolic forms that are employed in it. (David Arthur Pailin). In the final piece in this volume, Jones examines how orthodox Christian teaching about the state of humankind and the kingdom of God agrees with the works of God, and the oeconomy of Nature (p. 421). (David Arthur Pailin). Condition: Recently re-bound in quarter calf with matching buckram boards and gilt lettering on spine. Externally, very smart with some minor shelfwear and wear to the leather only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages slightly browned and age-toned and edges of leaves burnished. There is a David Arthur Pailin bookplate to the front pastedown, dated 1984. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

After a preliminary trip to Berlin, he was dispatched on a secret mission to Prussia in 1786, returning to France in 1787. His remarkably candid account of his experiences at the Prussian court did little to further diplomatic relations, as Mirabeau was scathing in his assessment of the Prussian court, denouncing it as scandalous and corrupt, labelling the King as weak and his brother as incompetent.         Expostulatory Odes to a Great Duke and a Little Lord

London - G. Kearsley, 1789. London - G. Kearsley, 1789 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A disbound copy of this scarce satirical work. John Wolcot (1738-1819) wrote under the nom-de-plume of Peter Pindar, was a satirist. Born in Dodbrooke, near Kingsbridge in Devon, he studied medicine and in 1767 went as physician to Sir William Trelawny, Governor of Jamaica. In 1780, Wolcot went to London and commenced writing satires. The first objects of his attentions were the members of the Royal Academy, and when these attempts were well received the King and Queen became the most frequent marks for his satirical shafts. In 1786 appeared The Lousiad, a Heroi-Comic Poem, taking its name from a legend that a louse had once appeared on the King's dinner plate. Other subjects were Boswell, the biographer of Samuel Johnson, and James Bruce, the Abyssinian traveller. Wolcot, had a remarkable vein of humour and wit, which, while intensely comic to persons not involved, stung its subjects to the quick. He had likewise strong intelligence, and a power of coining effective phrases. In other kinds of composition, as in some ballads which he wrote, an unexpected touch of gentleness and even tenderness appears. Among these are The Beggar Man and Lord Gregory. Condition: This volume is disbound. Thetext block is tight and firm. There is some reasonably minorbrown spottingto the outer pages but internally the pages are generally clean and bright. Overall, the condition of this volume is very good..

Autograph Document Signed / Unsigned Portrait

This English-born American bookseller and publisher was controversial during the American Revolution for his suspected Tory sympathies, especially since he published the "New York Gazetteer," even returning to England briefly early during the war; but it's believed he was actually a spy for the Americans, and smuggled messages to General Washington printed on thin paper bound into the covers of books. ADS, 2pp (separate leaves), 7 3/4" X 6" and 7 3/4" X 7½", New York, NY, 1789 September 10-11. Very good. Mild bit of age toning, slight bit of soiling. First leaf, in Rivington's hand, records a real estate transaction (verbatim, with line breaks included): "James Rivington & wife / to / Benj: Moore / deed & Release Sept: 10 & 11, 1789. / Recd. -- Lib:45. p529 -- & Lib:46. p221. -- / 16 ac. 2 roads & 32 paas.-- Between Green- / -wich Road & the River -- South of / Mary Clarke's land. --" The second leaf, in another and neater hand, notes: "Abstract of Title to two Lots of Ground, on the North-Easterly side of Twenty first Street, in the 12th Ward of the City of New York, distinguished on the plot beneath by the numbers 1 & 2." Below this is a well-drafted plat map showing land parcels between "9th Av." at left, "8th Ave." at right, "22d St" at top and "21. St." at bottom -- with the two lots in question here neatly marked "1" and "2" in the lower right area of this block. The purchaser here was Bishop BENJAMIN MOORE (1748-1816) the second bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and president of Columbia College -- best remembered as the father of Clement C. Moore (1779-1863), the scholar who penned the immortal poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" in 1823. Bishop Moore and his son owned a number of properties in this area, mostly in the Chelsea Historic District slightly north of the two lots he purchased from Rivington. A scarce document with interesting connections. Accompanied by a superb and itself scarce vintage steel-engraved portrait, heavy stock 7" X 10½", n.p., n.y. [mid-19th century]. Fine. A bold and handsome head-and-shoulders portrait of Rivington gazing intently at the viewer, looking rather like Washington himself, engraved by A.H. Ritchie.

II,222; Kraemer/Gendolla I,84; Oswald 194; Karhof/Köhne 176.

Hannover, Schmidt (Band 1) und Christian Ritscher (2 u. 3), 1789-1790.. . - Knigge 31.01. Goed. IV 1, 616, 17. Wolfstieg 41519. Vgl. Knigge-Kat. Wolfenbüttel 106.

1789 - ("Th. Jefferson") in black ink on watermarked paper "J. Honig", Paris, September 10, 1789. 7 1/8" x 9 1/4"; 1 page (recto only); very good, fresh. Jefferson writes this letter to Mr. Cutting to arrange passage to America after his tenure as Ambassador to France. In part: ".I am honored with your favor of the 3d and thank you for the information it contained. None of the vessels mentioned in it will suit me, unless that of Mr. Taylor of Norfolk should be longer receiving its orders than we ought to expect. However this sometimes happens and I do not therefore give up the possibility that she may be here late enough to carry me. Indeed I begin to be anxious now to know of a ship, because the time approaches at which I wish to get off, and because I learn there is no vessel at Bordeaux, & have no expectation of there being any at Nantes or Lorient, so that my reliance is almost entirely on Havre, and therefore I shall look for your letters with more & more inquietude daily. My baggage left this on Sunday last on board the Diligence d'eau for Havre, here I may expect it to arrive about the 14th or 15th instant. I took the liberty of addressing it to you. It consists of 38 boxes, hampers & bales, & I will beg the favor of you to have them stored in a good warehouse, convenient to the post. I must also beg the favor of you to advance for me the transportation etc. which I will pay here to your order on sight, or will pay to yourself on sight in Havre."

Ornati presi da graffiti e pitture antiche esistenti in Firenze,

Florence: Niccol?gni & Giuseppe Bardi, 1789. Florence: Niccolò Pagni & Giuseppe Bardi,, 1789. disegnati ed incisi in 40 rami ... Tall folio (420 × 278 mm). Contemporary Italian sheep-backed marbled boards, title in gilt. Engraved throughout, title and 39 plates. Extremities a little worn, title and some plates browned, but a very good copy. First edition of this attractive collection of engravings of ornamental and grottesque panels drawn from the frescoes and other wall-paintings of Florence. Includes work by Cosimo Feltrini, Poccetti Bernardino, Giovanni da Udine, and Benedetto da Rovezzano. Lasinio (1759–1838) was a a renowned Italian printmaker, conservator, teacher and art dealer. He apparently taught engraving at the Accademia in Florence, where he was appointed Accademizo del Disegno in 1794 and Professor in 1800, and it is possible that he assisted Raffaello Morghen there. Lasinio later worked at Pisa where he was made conservatore of the Camposanto Monumentale, and founded the city's Accademia. His large-scale etchings of the frescoes in the Camposanto in the "outline stryle" were to be immensely influential on nineteenth-century European painters, notably the Pre-Raphaelites in England.

A System of English Conveyancing, Adapted to Scotland.

1789. English Conveyancing Adapted to Scotland McNayr, James. A System of English Conveyancing, Adapted to Scotland. Glasgow: Printed by David Niven, 1789. vii, 320 pp. Quarto (8-1/2" x 10"). Recent period-style quarter calf over cloth, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed, title page rehinged. Dampstaining to most of text, occasional dampspotting. Early owner signature (of Robert Taylor) to heads of title page and p. 1, interior otherwise clean. An attractively bound copy of a scarce title. * First edition. "As the Collections of Precedents in Conveyancing which have been published in England, are numerous, this inattention may appear inexcusable, particularly in those who are professionally interested: But the truth is, that in Scotland, these Collections are of little utility.... Hence it occurred to the Editor, that a System of Conveyancing, which exhibited Precedents of such Deeds only, as have been, or are likely to be, executed in Scotland in the English form, with such observations as might elucidate and display their nature, requisites, and effects, would be of considerable utility in Scotland; not only to professional Conveyancers, but to all who are commercially connected with England, or the British colonies" (iii-iv). A second edition was published in 1800. OCLC locates 4 copies of this edition, 2 copies of the second edition. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 5:77..
