[EARLY VERSION OF THE "DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MAN AND OF THE CITIZEN"]. Projet des premiers articles de la Constitution, lu dans la seance du 28 juillet 1789 par M. Mounier, membre du Comite, charge du plan de Constitution

Paris: Chez Baudouin, imprimeur de l'Assemblee nationale, 1789. FIRST EDITION. FINE COPY. 8vo. 14pp., 1 f. (blank) unbound as issued. Preserved in a protective black cloth case (Cloverleaf Studio) First edition of the famous "Projet de Monier" in its first draft, read just two weeks after the Fall of the Bastille. It includes two chapters: the first is a "Declaration of Human Rights and the Citizen" ('Declaration des droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen') in 23 articles; the second is "Principles of the French Government" ('Principes du Gouvernement Francais') in 35 articles. As is well known, the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen" is a FUNDAMENTAL DOCUMENT of the French Revolution and indeed of all democracies worldwide, defining the individual and collective rights of all individuals as universal. Influenced by the doctrine of natural rights, the rights of Man are valid at all times and in every place, pertaining to human nature itself. Although it establishes fundamental rights for French citizens and all men without exception, it addresses neither the status of women nor slavery; despite that, it is a precursor document to international human rights instruments. * REFERENCES: Emile Walsh, Le declaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen et l'Assemblee constituante (1903) p. 89-94, with a detailed comparison of Mounier's text and those of his predecessors Sieyes and Lafayette. Martin & Walter, Revolution francaise, No. 25400; Monglond I. 88. * A beautiful copy in superb original condition, in a fine protective case.

Essays on physiognomy Trans by Henry Hunter; including 3 plates by William Blake

London: John Murray, 1789. Physiognomy; Influential on John Henry Fuseli and William Blake Lavater, Johann Caspar (1741-1801). Essays on physiognomy. . . . Illustrated by more than eight hundred engravings. . . . Translated from the French by Henry Hunter. 3 vols. in 5, 4to. Variously paginated. 173 plates plus numerous text engravings. London: John Murray, 1789-98. 335 x 275 mm. 19th cent. quarter morocco, marbled boards, a little rubbed. Minor foxing and offsetting, but a very good set. First Edition in English. Lavater's exposition of character on the basis of physical features was grounded in his religious views and in the philosophy of Goethe, who worked with him on the book for a time. It was the last and most complete work of the descriptive physiognomists, extremely influential both in the history of psychiatry and in English portraiture. The present edition was especially important for the artistic development of John Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) and William Blake (1757-1827), who engraved one plate after Rubens in Vol. I and two vignettes signed "Blake Sc." or "Blake sculp."         Logick: or, the Right Use of Reason in the Enquiry after Truth. With a variety of rules to guard against error, in the affairs of religion and human life, as well as in the sciences

Philadelphia: Printed for Thomas Dobson, at the Stone House, in Second Street, 1789. First American edition (stated sixteenth edition on title page). x, 13-348 pp (lacks blank preceding Introduction). 1 vols. 12mo. Modern full crushed brown levant. Bookplate. Title page somewhat soiled and reapirs at inner margin, some minor dampstaining to text, leaf G2 (pp. 79-80) defective, with loss of lower corner and several words of text; overall a good, sound copy of a very scarce book. The Straw Man Fallacy First published in England in 1725, this is the first printing in America of Watts' first important work; it ultimately became extremely influential in universities and America well through the first half of the 19th century. As an interesting sidenote, Watts, in describing the particular sophism known as the 'straw man", was the first the use the word 'straw" in describing it. At p. 303, he writes: "...and when they have with a great deal of pomp attacked and confoundedthese images of straw of their own making, they triumph over their adversary as if they had confounded his position." A very scarce and important book.

Regolamento dei Regi spedali di Santa Maria Nuova di Bonifazio

Florence: Gaetano Cambiagi, 1789. Chiarugi, Vincenzo (1739-1820). Regolamento dei Regi spedali di Santa Maria Nuova di Bonifazio. 4to. lxxviii, [2], 416, [82]pp., incl. 27 charts (some folding, some double-page). Engraved title and 10 folding engraved plates (1 in facsimile). Florence: Gaetano Cambiagi, 1789. 273 x 200 mm. 19th cent. half vellum, marbled boards, light rubbing. Paper flaw in leaf oo1, otherwise fine. First Edition. In 1774, under the enlightened rule of the Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Tuscany, the first law in Europe authorizing hospital care for the insane was enacted. The following year Vincenzo Chiarugi, then senior physician at the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova, recommended to the Duke that the insane be relocated to the old Bonifazio Hospital, which would be renovated for the purpose; in 1788, the new Bonifazio Hospital was officially opened. Chiarugi was named physician-in-chief of the new hospital, which was dedicated to the care of insane, incurable, invalid and dermatologic patients; his humane administration with regard to the insane marked the first application of the principles of treatment that form the basis of modern psychiatry.Chiarugi required a physical examination and clinical assessment of each patient admitted, hygienic rooms with segregation of the sexes, no restraint beyond strait jacket and cotton strips, a firm but kindly attitude on the part of the staff, and no work assignments for the patients except those that would benefit their situations. When it came time to reprint the regulations of the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova (which had been issued a few years previously by Count Covoni-Girolami), the Grand Duke encouraged Chiarugi to add a section on the rules and regulations of the Bonifazio Hospital. Chiarugi's additions to this administrative manual constitute the first appearance in print of his reforms in the care of the mentally ill, preceding by four years their fuller exposition in his Della pazzia in genere, e in specie. Mora, "Chiarugi and psychiatric reform," J. Hist. Med. & Allied Sci. 14 (1959), pp 424-433. Norman 474.

        Le costume francais 1789-1830.

[France], np, nd. - 16 leaves with original gouaches. Original wrappers. Folio. Stunning collection of 16 original guaches with accompanying descriptive text (handwritten in an elegant hand in French and mounted on cardstock to versus opposite image they are describing) all by a skilled artist (one "J. Baten" as noted on cover). The monotone (with occasional highlights of color) fashion plates are executed in a striking white on dark grey heavy stock, lending the entire production a ghostly quality not out of place in these studies of bygone French fashions. Based on design and handwriting, we date most likely to the first half of the 20th century. The style of the gouaches themselves - somewhere between Deco and Nouveau - would lend credence to this assessment. 5 plates show men, one of a man and woman, ten of women only. Exceptional.         Autograph Letter Signed "Thevenard" Regarding Packages from the French Minister of the Navy to be Sent to the Colony of Saint-Domingue].

Lorient 1789 - Lorient, 1 December 1789. Small Octavo (ca. 20x16,5 cm). 3 pp. Brown ink on watermarked laid bluish paper. Mild fold marks, but overall a very good letter. An interesting letter from French politician and naval officer Antoine Jean Marie Thévenard, written in the first year of the French Revolution of 1789. He served during the reign of Louis XVI, being for a short time the Minister of the Navy and the Colonies (May-September 1791), and commanded the French Republican fleets in Brest, Toulon, and Rochefort after 1793. Thévenard continued his service during the Napoleonic Wars and after the Bourbon Restoration and was buried at the Panthéon de Paris. In a letter to his friend Thévenard asks him to send "five packages from the minister and a few other things which have just been delivered to me and are to be shipped out" on the vessels bound for the French colonies of Saint-Domingue and Martinique. "I do not have much opportunity to travel to the colonies whereas it is an everyday occurrence [for you]. Please would you be kind enough, Monsieur, to take advantage of the most convenient time, and what you may deem the safest way to pass those letters on?" Thévenard notes that he will inform "monsieur de la Luzerne" about the shipment and asks his friend to write on which ship the packages would be sent. Most likely, he mentions César Henri Guillaume de La Luzerne (1737-1799) who was governor-general of the French colony in Saint-Domingue in 1785-1787 and French Secretary of State for the Navy in 1787-1790. Two manuscript notes in a different hand written on top of the first page of the letter state that "Three parcels to Saint-Domingue were handed over to monsieur Collines, captain of Le Patriote," and "Three other parcels handed over to M. Bichon, captain of Le Therese, which is heading to Guadeloupe."

        Il Reale Giardino di Boboli

1789. [BOBOLI STATUE GARDENS]. SOLDINI, Franciscus M. Il Reale Giardino di Boboli nella sua Pianta e nelle sue Statue. 81, [1] pp. Illustrated with an engraved dedication to Virginia Mazza, engraved title-page, triple-page folding plan of the garden (printed on blue paper) and 45 leaves of plates (numbered 1-46 in manuscript) by Gaetano Vascellini, all printed in sepia. Folio, 276 x 199 mm, bound in contemporary Italian pale quarter-calf, gilt. [Florence: s.n., 1789]. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of this attractive survey of the sculpture in the Boboli gardens, Florence, with all forty-seven engraved plates printed in shades of various colours, including sepia, yellow, brown, purple and beige. This is a very special copy; we have been unable to trace another like it (although the dedication copy of Soldini's De Anima Brutorum [Florence, 1776] was printed in several colours, for which see our Catalogue 105 item 71). Designed by Niccolo Tribolo for Cosimo I de' Medici, the construction of the Boboli gardens began in 1550. "During the next half-century all the prominent architects and sculptors working in Florence had a hand in shaping its final state: Baccio Bandinelli, Vasari, Ammannati, Buontalenti, and Giambologna, as well as Stoldo Lorenzi, the promising young sculptor who had worked on the fountains at Castello" (Claudia Lazzarro, The Italian Renaissance Garden p. 191). The vast lateral extensions (designed by Alfonso and Giulio Parigi) date from the beginning of the eighteenth century. The engraved plates were admirably executed by Gaetano Vascellini (1745-1805), a Florentine engraver of the school of Ercole Graziani and Carlo Faucci. This work apparently remained unknown to Claudia Lazzarro; her plan of Boboli Garden (fig. 201), taken from H. Inigo Triggs's The Art of Garden Design in Italy (London, 1906), was an unfortunate choice. Ours is a fine copy in a contemporary binding, with all the engravings printed in shades of various colours; rare thus. Berlin Katalog 3497. Cicognara 4218. Virgilio Vercelloni, European Gardens: An Historical Atlas plate 70 (with reproduction). Luigi Dami, The Italian Garden p. 52 number 147 (reproducing the plan on plate CCXXV).

Solandra Grandiflora, In the Possession of Her Grace the Duchess of Portland

London: Archd. Robertson, 1789. Aquatint printed in colour, 535 x 400 mm., trimmed to the plate-mark, some small edge tears, aged, laid down; a remarkable survival. No other copy known: depicting a plant from the Duchess of Portland in 1789. Exceptionally rare, perhaps unique, separately-issued eighteenth-century coloured-print of a flower grown in the famous gardens of the Duchess of Portland at Bulstrode. Despite Hordern House's long interest in the botany of this era generally, and the circle of the Duchess of Portland particularly, we have never before handled a copy of this print, nor have we found any reference to it any of the standard bibliographies. Indeed, a search of the great international collections such as the British Library, the British Museum natural history collection, and the Huntington, among others, has not unearthed any other copy.Such separately-issued prints are among the rarest and least understood survivals from this important era of botanical study, but represent the attempt to disseminate the grandest and most beautiful specimens among like-minded enthusiasts in the era before the famous botanical magazines. It is particularly telling that this print has been produced using the daring French technique of colour printing à la poupée, which would have been a novelty at the time in England (and the subject of which was more recently canvassed in the debates about the appropriate printing style to be used in the Alecto Historical Editions printing of Banks' Florilegium in the 1980s).The Solandra grandiflora is a native of central America and the Caribbean, named in honour of the Cook voyage veteran Daniel Solander in 1787: this print is a touching tribute, therefore, as Solander was closely associated with Bulstrode, working assiduously on the Duchess's natural history collections (in fact, Solander was one of the first Europeans to study the plant, but published no scientific name during his lifetime). One curiosity of the plate is the question as to which Duchess of Portland is being referred to. Given the dates, the third Duchess, Dorothy, is implied, but in every other sense her predecessor Margaret is more likely: Margaret Cavendish-Bentinck (1715-1785) was a great botanist and patron of natural history whose passionate devotion to her gardens was legendary even during this era of grand aristocratic botany, and brought her into contact with many of the significant figures of her day, including of course Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. The sale of her collection in 1786 at a 38-day auction was one of the most significant events of the era.Studio artists would have worked at her gardens but it is often the case that little is known about their biographies, and in this regard Archibald Robertson is no exception. Two men of that name were working as artists in this era. The first was the Scot (1765-1835) who studied under Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West before emigrating to the United States in 1791, becoming famous as a portrait miniaturist. However, he can probably be discounted because the second man is a much better fit: that Archibald Robertson was a slightly older man (fl. 1765-1804), a print-seller, drawing master, engraver and publisher who was active in London from the mid-1760s and based in Savile Row around this time. Given the balance of possibilities, the latter is the only likely candidate. The print was advertised for sale as available from an independent print-seller for the genuinely substantial price of half a guinea to subscribers. See, for example, a notice in the London newspaper The World on 23 May 1789: "Very shortly will be published, A PRINT, Price Half-a-Guinea to Subscribers, and Fifteen Shillings Non-Subscribers, executed in a very peculiar manner, so as to give the most lively Representation in colours, of a beautiful Drawing in the possession of Her Grace the Dutchess [sic] of Portland, of the PLANT called SOLANDRA GRANDIFLORA, which blew most uncommonly fine in March last, at Bulstrode. Subscriptions taken in at Mr. Bradshaw's, Printseller, Coventry-street, and nowhere else." One last poignant note is the fact that Thomas Bradshaw was a print-seller who went bankrupt in 1793.For more on the early history of Solandra grandiflora see particularly Curtis' Botanical Magazine, vol. 44, 1817, no. 1874.

Logick: or, the Right Use of Reason in the Enquiry after Truth. With a variety of rules to guard against error, in the affairs of religion and human life, as well as in the sciences

Philadelphia: Printed for Thomas Dobson, at the Stone House, in Second Street, 1789 - First published in England in 1725, this is the first printing in America of Watts' first important work; it ultimately became extremely influential in universities and America well through the first half of the 19th century. As an interesting sidenote, Watts, in describing the particular sophism known as the 'straw man", was the first the use the word 'straw" in describing it. At p. 303, he writes: ".and when they have with a great deal of pomp attacked and confoundedthese images of straw of their own making, they triumph over their adversary as if they had confounded his position." A very scarce and important book First American edition (stated sixteenth edition on title page). 12mo. x, 13-348 pp (lacks blank preceding Introduction). Dictionnaire de physique

New edition, after the original was published in 1761 in Avignon. A supplement to the dictionary, printed in 1787, was integrated into alphabetical order in this edition. 2 boards déplliantes in Volume I of which ballooning the frontispiece; 5 folding plates in volume II; 3 folding plates in Volume III; 3 folding plates in Volume IV; 2 folding plates in Volume V; or 15 boards. Half sheepskin brunette small corners slightly later vellum. Smooth back wheels decorated in Greek. Piece of red morocco and volume number of black morocco (adorned with a laurel wreath). Good copy. Dictionary of Physics Paulian enjoyed some success and was reprinted many times with additions; its success lies in the width of the sound spectrum study - the divining rod, scientists, comets, and arid parts of arithmetic, until the last aerostatic experiments - and didactic quality articles; Paulian, long time professor at Avignon in fact this talent to explain the most complex in an affordable way without betraying things is particularly the case for the Newtonian system which he was particularly fond. This dictionary is not for scholars but an amateur public science. Chez Gaude A Nimes 1789 5 tomes en 4 Vol. in 8 (12x20cm) relié

First Edition. Rare. Absent the BN of France. Full Veu period. Smooth back to the net. Parts of title and volume number of red and black. Fillets border on covers. Gilt edges. Some frictions. Antoine de La Salle (1754-1829), philosopher and scientist, was certainly one of the most interesting thinkers of his time, his ideas, sometimes whimsical and messy made him the leader of the physico-moral school. The share of physiognomy naturally has an important role in this theory. The Mechanics is both a classic treatise of physiognomy, and another to consider the relationship between the moral and body way from an educational perspective. Besides this, the Mechanics is also a treaty of understanding and logic, there are theories about the phonetics and linguistics, in short everything related to human, moral, intellectual and physical. The room had an eventful life, made many trips, visited America and Asia, studied the relationship between Buddhism and Christianity, wrote an unpublished history of China, and learned Arabic. Then, having left the Navy, he surveyed Europe, living in Spain and Italy before returning to settle in Paris where he devoted himself to philosophy and science. S.n.         The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne,

London: by T. Bensley; for B. White and Son,, 1789. in the County of Southampton: with Engravings, and an Appendix. Quarto. Original marbled boards, paper spine and spine label, edges untrimmed. Housed in a brown full morocco book-form drop-down box and slipcase by Mounteney. 7 engraved plates, 2 folding, one of which is a panoramic view of Selbourne as frontispiece. The Natural History and The Antiquities each have their own section-title with an engraved vignette. Complete with appendices in Latin, an index and list of errata. With the usual misprints: p. 292 misnumbered 262, sig. Ppp 2 misassigned Pp2, and pp. 441?-2 omitted from pagination sequence but text continuous. Armorial bookplates of W. H. Mullens (early 20th century), Harold Greenhill (1941) to front pastedown, H. Bradley Martin bookplate to chemise. Near-contemporary ownership inscriptions to front free endpaper and title page. Spine and board edges quite rubbed, with the title label mostly illegible, discrete repair to joints, light spotting to a few end leaves, a few small perforations to first blank, faint damp-stain to frontis at bottom edge, otherwise notably clean and fresh within, only lightly cockled, a remarkably nice copy in the original boards, very good condition overall. First edition of this classic text of both English natural history and literature, "the first book which raised natural history into the region of literature" (Encyclopaedia Britannica), uncommon in contemporary binding. The book is arranged into three sequences of letters ?- those addressed to Pennant and to Barrington forming the natural history portion of the volume, the remainder forming an account of parish antiquities. This lovely copy, preserved in the original boards, has a superb provenance history - bearing the ownership inscription first of the author's nephew Thomas Holt White (1763?-1841), dated 1804, who was the eldest son of Gilbert's younger brother the noted naturalist and literary critic also called Thomas Holt White (1724?-1797). Gilbert White, without children himself, took much care and interest in his nephews, and Rashleigh Holt-White, Gilbert's great-grand-nephew, stated in his biography (John Murray, 1901) of the naturalist that his nephew Thomas "knew him very well". Rashleigh also notes that nephew Thomas was in fact originally intended by Gilbert to be bequeathed the house at Selborne, although this was ultimately left to brother Benjamin. It should be noted that White's Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne was in some ways a family project, produced and proliferated with fraternal support around a shared interest in naturalism and in Selborne house - brother Benjamin White (c.1725-1794) publishing the book, and brother Thomas Holt reviewing it in the Gentleman's Magazine. The copy also has the ownership inscription of an "Anna White, 20 February 1822", and on the title page the ownership inscription "Edward Cotsford, to Miss M. Rundell", untraced. Proceeding into the 20th century, this copy also bears the armorial bookplate of W. H. Mullens, followed by the 1941 illustrated bookplate of Chicago collector Harold Greenhill (1893-1968 - member of the Caxton Club, whose books are found at Princeton University and the Newberry Library), finally finding its most illustrious destination in the collection of H. Bradley Martin, with his bookplate to the chemise. A superlative copy in numerous respects.
