"Daniel Gottlob Turk's Klavierschule (1789) was, for late eighteenth-century readers, an unsurpassed source of practical wisdom concerning the art of playing the clavichord and a repository of useful information of general interest - including discussions of technical terms used in music, summaries of the characteristics which define various categories of composition (overture, serenade, individual dance movements, etc.), and commentary which would enhance the development of musical taste. For modern readers, the work powerfully evokes the standards, practices, and aesthetics of the Classic era. Pianists who perform works of Mozart or Haydn on modern instruments borrowing nineteenth-century legato style and conforming to metronomic exactitude in pacing might find Turk's suggestions concerning non-legato articulation and nuanced rhythmic delivery a revelation. It is upon such books as Turk's that the recent movement towards performance on original instruments depends for sound advice on the use of the keyboard's resources for creating appropriate musical effects."         Scarce and illimunating autograph letter signed by Gustavus Scott concerning the new Congress which was then just convening in New York

Cambridge, [Maryland], April 12, 1789. 7.25" x 8.75". "(First Session of Congress) Gustavus SCOTT (d. 1801) Maryland lawyer, member of the Continental Congress, and one of the founders of the Potomac canal company in 1784. Scott was one of the original commissioners who supervised the erection of the public buildings at Washington. Extremely fine content Autograph Letter Signed ""Gusts Scott"", three pages, quarto, (7.25"" x 8.75""), Cambridge, [Maryland], April 12, 1789 to an unknown correspondent concerning the new Congress which was then just convening in New York and the prospect of his receiving a judicial post. ""I think there is some Ground to suppose that amidst the various names that will appear at New York previous to the Appointments for the new Judiciary that my name may appear unless it should be apparent that a majority of the Senate would not join the appointment. I have had a good deal of Conversation on this subject with Mr Henry & have written to Mr. Carroll, Collo. Grayson, Mr. Gale, & Mr. Levey[?] on the Subject. What Chance I may have of success, or upon what principles these appointments will be made by the Senate is a subject very difficult of me to determine..."" At the time, Scott was a member of the Maryland Assembly, a duty he was finding quite tiresome ""...which is indeed rendered more wretched by each succeeding session of Assembly..."" He thought a judicial appointment ""...with a tolerable Salary, would no doubt be very desirable..."" As to his chances of attaining this comfortable position would ""depend, on the number of Offices to take place & the number of applicants from each State. This subject has no doubt been discuss'd since the meeting of the members... & the names of many of the Candidates for appointments in the Judiciary have been publicly mentioned. I shall be particularly obliged to you to give me the fullest information you can on this subject, especially as to the Applications from this State, as I am fully persuaded, equality of Emolument in Office & in every other respect... will be attended by the President..."" According to Congressional records, Smith's name never did appear in connection with a judicial post. Smith's involvement with the Potomac Company would have likely brought into close contact with Washington, so he obviously enjoyed good political connections. Indeed when Maryland attempted to borrow funds to erect the public buildings in Washington, the state's credit was so bad, that Smith's credit was used for the purpose. In the end it was his own humbleness: ""It is the Corner Stone on which my Conduct will be regulated. If any Gentleman should apply who in my own opinion who ought to have a preference to me, whatever might be my Chance of appointment I would by no means stand in his way. I therefore cannot with propriety endeavour to press forward until I am more fully informed on this subject..."" Usual folds, a few minor toned spots, else very clean and bright and in very fine condition."

A treatise on gun-powder; a treatise on fire-arms; and a treatise on the service of artillery in time of war: translated from the Italian. by Captain Thomson.

London: sold by T. and J. Egerton 1789 - 8vo, xl, 374, (2, errata) pp., 24 folding engraved plates, lacking the half-title, contemporary tree calf, spine heavily gilt-tooled. First English translations of Papacino D'Antoni's three important treatises on gunpowder, ballistics and artillery. Having founded the Royal Artillery and Military Engineering Academy in 1739, Charles Emanuel II set about securing the services of the most prominent mathematical and engineering minds of the time: the mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange, and General Papacino D'Antoni (1714-1786), the distinguished artillery commander and analyst. The textbooks written by D'Antoni for the Academy, where he served as director, integrated Benjamin Robins's experimental work in ballistics with his own combat experience against France. These highly detailed and very advanced treatises provide a wealth of information on ballistics, types of shot, the effectiveness of types of gunpowder in different temperatures and meteorological conditions, the penetration of shot, the construction, care and maintenance of firearms and artillery, and much much more. An exceptionally handsome volume, in very fine condition. With the contemporary armorial bookplate of Lt.-Gen. George Lane Parker (1724-1791), and the later bookplate of the Earl of Macclesfield.         History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, The

1789-88. A Masterpiece of Historical Penetration and Literary Style…"GIBBON, Edward. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. London: Printed for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1789-1788. New edition of volumes I - III, first editions of volumes IV - VI. Six large quarto volumes (10 13/16 x 8 9/16 inches; 274 x 216 mm.). viii, [12], 704; [x], 640; [x], 640; [2], viii, [8], 620; [x], 684; [xii], 646, [52, index and errata] pp. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Edward Gibbon by John Hall after Sir Joshua Reynolds in volume 1, two large folding engraved maps by Thomas Kitchin 'Western Part of the Roman Empire' (volume I, facing p. 1), 'Eastern Part of the Roman Empire' (volume IV, facing p. 1), and full-page map of 'The Parts of Europe and Asia, adjacent to Constantinople' (volume II, facing p. 22). Bound without half-titles. Some light sporadic foxing throughout.Contemporary speckled calf, covers decoratively ruled in gilt, smooth spines with decorative gilt bands. Red and green morocco lettering and numeral labels, lettered in gilt. Bookplate of Roger Peers on front paste-down of each volume. Neat ink signature of Roger Peers on each front blank end-leaf. A few joints cracked but sound. Green morocco numeral label missing from spine of volume III. Overall a very attractive and sound set.A mixed set, with later editions (1789) of the first three volumes, and first editions (1788) of the last three volumes. Gibbon's masterful history of the Roman Empire was originally issued in six quarto volumes over the course of twelve years between 1776 and 1788. Modest expectations on the part of both author and publisher regarding the market for such an imposing work resulted in an initial printing of only 1000 copies of the original printing. This proved a serious miscalculation of the demand, and subsequently made complete sets of the first edition difficult to come by. Within a fortnight the first edition was completely sold out. "I am at a loss", wrote Gibbon in his Memoirs, "how to describe the success of the work without betraying the vanity of the writer. The first impression was exhausted within a few days; a second and third edition were scarcely adequate to the demand, and the bookseller's property was twice invaded by the 'Pirates' of Dublin. "My book was on every table, and almost every toilette; the historian was crowned by the taste or fashion of the day." (Gibbon, Miscellaneous Works and Memoirs. 2nd ed. London, 1814, Vol. I., p. 223). The third edition appeared in 1777, a year after the first and second printings. Issued in an edition of 1000 copies, it was more fully revised and corrected than the second (which merely incorporated the errata). At the suggestion of Gibbon's friend, David Hume, the copious notes which previously had been gathered in the rear of the volume, were now transferred to the bottom of the page. This improved format was continued throughout the remaining volumes. In combining the third edition of the first volume with the first edition of the remainder (as in the present case), a uniformly annotated set is thereby achieved. In 1780 the frontispiece portrait of Gibbon, engraved by John Hall after a painting of Joshua Reynolds, was issued by the publisher. With the publication of the second and third volumes in 1781, an enlarged table of contents was made available for the first volume, as well as three maps (all present in this copy). The map of Constantinople was frequently cropped to make it the same size as the printed page, and then bound in sideways. (J.E.A. Norton. A Bibliography of the Works of Edward Gibbon)."This Masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works, which like the writings of Macaulay and Mommsen, maintain their hold upon the layman and continue to stimulate the scholar although they have been superseded in many, if not most, details by subsequent advances of research and changes in the climate of opinion. Whereas other eighteenth-century writers in this field, such as Voltaire, are still quoted with respect, the Decline and Fall is the only historical narrative prior to Macaulay which continues to be reprinted and actually read. Gibbon was fortunate in the choice of his publisher, William Strahan -- the friend of Dr. Johnson, Benjamin Franklin, David Hume -- who, together with Cadell, was also the publisher of Adam Smith and James Macpherson. Strahan was the first to appreciate the importance of Gibbon's work: having read the manuscript of the first volume, he immediately doubled the printing order -- and the first edition of one thousand copies was sold within a fortnight." (Printing and the Mind of Man, 222 - citing the first edition).

Volume 12, though not noted within, is Volume 1 of the Debates in Parliament. Beginning with Volume 12, there is also a change in "printed for" notation. Most of these volumes contain the bookplate of "Richard Curson, jun." and it is presumed that he is the same individual refered to in this text, found in a blogspot relating to Elizabeth Becker Curson (who was born in New York City in 1731): "Elizabeth Becker's final living son, Richard Curson, Jr., was born on 1763 in New York, and fled to Baltimore, in 1777, with his parents. In 1784, he married Elizabeth Moale, had 3 children who lived to maturity, and lived at his parents' home until 1803. Elizabeth had worried about this son Richard for years. He was in ailing health and suffered from a spinal disease since early childhood. In 1787, Elizabeth Becker Curson died and was buried at Old Saint Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Baltimore. In 1805, Richard Curson Sr. died and was buried next to his wife. The following year, their son Richard was declared a lunatic by the Chancery Court of Maryland. The custody of his person & property were given to Samuel Vincent, who had administered the estate for the elder Curson and his wife, Elizabeth Becker Curson. Richard Jr. died on June 14, 1808, and was buried next to his parents in Baltimore."

        Dictionnaire de physique

A Nimes: Chez Gaude, 1789. Fine. Chez Gaude, A Nimes 1789, 5 tomes en 4 Vol. in 8 (12x20cm), relié. - New edition, after the original was published in 1761 in Avignon. A supplement to the dictionary, printed in 1787, was integrated into alphabetical order in this edition. 2 boards déplliantes in Volume I of which ballooning the frontispiece; 5 folding plates in volume II; 3 folding plates in Volume III; 3 folding plates in Volume IV; 2 folding plates in Volume V; or 15 boards. Half sheepskin brunette small corners slightly later vellum. Smooth back wheels decorated in Greek. Piece of red morocco and volume number of black morocco (adorned with a laurel wreath). Good copy. Dictionary of Physics Paulian enjoyed some success and was reprinted many times with additions; its success lies in the width of the sound spectrum study - the divining rod, scientists, comets, and arid parts of arithmetic, until the last aerostatic experiments - and didactic quality articles; Paulian, long time professor at Avignon in fact this talent to explain the most complex in an affordable way without betraying things is particularly the case for the Newtonian system which he was particularly fond. This dictionary is not for scholars but an amateur public science. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

(2 ll.), 279, (5) pp. 8°, contemporary speckled sheep (minor wear to extremities and slight rubbing, gilding a bit faded), flat spine with gilt fillets, crimson leather lettering piece, gilt letter, marbled endleaves, text-block edges rouged. Final 8 leaves just touched at outer edges by scorching (the final 4 affected slightly more, and the rear free endleaves ever so slightly more). Small repair to title page affecting the word "Oficina" in the imprint, but not obscuring legibility. Small, skillful repair to final leaf. Overall in good to very good condition. Small, later ink inscription on p. 279. ---- First Edition in Spanish of the Dominican Fr. António de Sousa's @Aphorismi inquisitorum in quator libros distributi. Cum vera historia de origine S. Inquisitionis Lusitanæ, & quæstione de testibus singularibus in causis Fidei, originally published in Latin in Lisbon, 1630. This work, by a grandson of Martim Afonso de Sousa and son of the Portuguese ambassador to Madrid under D. Sebastião, enjoyed a number of reprints, all in Latin. We believe this to be the only vernacular edition. But it is much more than a simple translation. The reason for its publication is explained in the prologue (pp. 1-32) by the translator, editor, and commentator, Dr. D. Josef Marcos Hernandez, as being the need to correct false and misleading impressions derived from another book. Beginning on p. 166, and continuing to p. 275, is his "Discurso sobre la vida del falso Nuncio de Portugal, Alonso Perez de Saavedra." It is a critique of a book published the previous year in Madrid, @Vida del Falso Nuncio de Portugal Alonso Perez de Saavedra, escrita por él mismo, á instancia del Eminentísimo Señor Don Gaspar de Quiroga, Arzobispo de Toledo, y Cardenal de la Santa Iglesia de Roma: Y la del fingido Obispo Griego Francisco Camacho, publicada por Don Juan Bernardino Roxo, Capellan mayor de los Reales Exércitos, en que se refieren sus raros y graciosos hechos. There is also an undated edition said to be of ca. 1739. This is an autobiographical memoir (genuine? fictitious?) of an ingenious rogue of low origins who passed himself off as the Papal Nuncio to the Portuguese court. He claims to have established the Inquisition in that kingdom in 1539. The original manuscript, in the Library of the Escorial, dates to the reign of King Philip II (1556-1598). ---- Van der Vekene, @Bibliotheca Bibliograhica Historiae Sanctae Inquisitionis 3669.         Analyse das theses de direito enfyteutico, que se defenderão no presente anno na Universidade de Coimbra ?.

Lisbon, Na Regia Officina Typografica, 1789. - (1 l.), 87 pp. 4°, contemporary decorated wrappers (slight wear to spine), all edges gilt. In fine condition. ---- FIRST EDITION, very rare. Ferreira's first published work was an apparently unrecorded defense of his thesis on emphyteusis (Coimbra 1785), while his first generally known work, @Elementa juris emphyteuticii (Coimbra, 1789), was a textbook on emphyteusis. With origins in Roman law, emphyteusis involved contracts by which extended or perpetual rights were granted for the use of agricultural land, subject to rental payments and the grantee's obligation to keep the land in cultivation. Ferreira's analysis was immediately attacked in three theses defended at Coimbra during 1789. In this work, Ferreira notes 14 points of disagreement between his work and those of his opponents, and provides in three letters a detailed defense of his views.Ferreira Cardoso da Costa (1765-1834) was born in Bahia, took his law degree at Coimbra University in 1785, and was appointed to its faculty in 1788. With a profound knowledge of ancient and modern law, he became a noted jurisconsult, serving as magistrate in Portugal for some years. In 1810 he was rounded up with others accused of Jacobinism and collaborating with the French (the "Setembrizada"), and deported to Ilha Terceira. There he married into a wealthy family and spent the rest of his life in the Azores. He was a corresponding member of the Real Academia das Sciencias de Lisboa.---- Borba de Moraes (1983) I, 223; not in @Período colonial.         Rules for the regulation and government of the poor, in the house of industry, in the Isle of Wight

Newport: printed by J. Mallett, 1789. 8vo., 10 + (2)pp., including the final blank, recent marbled boards lettered on spine. A fine copy. Second edition. Of great rarity: ESTC finds a copy only at Cambridge Un.Lib. and of the 1775 printing only at Bodleian. Although BL also seems to have a copy (which surprisingly does not show up on ESTC). The House of Industry opened near Newport in the Isle of Wight in 1774 is reputed to be the second oldest such workhouse in Britain. Based on legislation (Acts of Parliament of 1768 and 1771) the institution was designed 'for the reception, maintenance, and employment of the poor belonging to the several parishes and places within the said Island'. Trustees for the new multi-functional workhouse were to be Sir John Barrington, Sir Richard Worsley, and Sir William Oglander. The individual poorhouses belonging to the island's parishes were sold off to help fund the new site, which comprised some 80 acres of Parkhurst Forest. The site was granted to the Guardians of the House of Industry on a 999 year lease at £8-17s.9¼d. p.a. The Rules> of the House are set out clearly in the present pamphlet in numbered clauses, 15 relating to the management by the Governor and Matron of the institution and its inmates and 4 relating to the Directors and Guardians. These rules including locking the doors at night, 'keeping all the rooms neat and clean', opening windows, and providing meals three times a day (a sample Bill of Fare is included), Rule V required the Governor and Matron to 'cause the childrens heads and hands to be kept clean, and all the cloaths and beds; and deliver to every one of the poor, clean linen on Saturday evening, and take in their foul on Sunday morning'. And there were various rules about candles, prayers, soap and linen, the actions nurses should take when an inmate dies, &c. &c. Rule VIII required that 'a book shall at all times lie open in the Committee Room, with pen and ink near it, that in case any Director, or Guardian, or other person visiting the House occasionally shall perceive any thing amiss, or can suggest any thing, for the better conducting this undertaking, he may write his thoughts or observations therein .....'. And Rule XII 'That such girls as are of a proper age, be employed and instructed (as far as the Matron and Servants of the House are capable of teaching them) in cookery, housewifery, washing, and scouring, and all other work, to qualify them for service'.

Utrecht, B. Wild and J. Altheer, 1789 - 4to (260 x 210 mm), pp 10, with one colour-printed engraved plate; a fine copy in original glazed speckled wrappers. £2250First edition of Bleuland's histological investigation of duodenal tissue. This is one of a series of Bleuland's anatomical monographs, illustrated with his pioneering method of tissue fixing and dyeing and colour-printing. These are among the first such illustrations, and established the basis of histological illustration. Bleuland perfected a technique of injecting tissue structures with fixatives and dyes to reveal anatomical details, especially under magnification. His plates, mostly drawn by I. van der Jagt and engraved by I. Kobell, are remarkable for their precision in depicting microscopic detail. Goldschmid considered them pieces of exemplary printing, unusual in subject and make-up for the period. They are probably the first examples of colour-printing of microscopical subjects.Bleuland (1756-1838) was professor of anatomy, surgery, and obstetrics at Harderwyck and later Utrecht. He prepared more than two thousand anatomical specimens, which were bought in 1825 by King William I of Holland for the University of Utrecht.Anatomie de la couleur 124; Blake p 50; not in Waller or Wellcome

First Edition. Following upon his work for the improvement of conditions in prisons in England, Ireland, and Europe, the social reformer determined in 1785 to investigate the condition of the lazarettos of Europe, and the best means for the prevention of the plague. In all, Howard visited lazarettos in Marseilles, Toulon, Nice, Genoa, Leghorn, Pisa, Florence, Rome, Naples, Malta, Zante, Smyrna, Constantinople, and Venice. In order to gain entry and inspect those in France and Italy, he had to resort to disguise and bribery. Deciding that the only way to get into the lazarettos of Venice was to be subjected to quarantine, he set sail to that city in a boat with a reputation for infection. As a consequence he spent forty-two days in confinement there in two separate institutions. As a writer Howard had little literary ability, and was assisted in the preparation of his two principal works by Richard Densham, Dr. Richard Price, and Dr. John Aikin.       Kbhvn.: Trykt hos J. F. Schultz 1789. A Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay; with an account of New South Wales

London: J. Debrett, 1789. In fine condition, in an excellent modern period-style binding by Aquarius.. Octavo in fours, complete with the rare half-title and the 2pp. advertisement at end; a fine and internally very fresh copy in a handsome tree-calf binding, gilt. A lovely copy of the first edition of the most significant first settlement book - the earliest authentic account of settled Australia to appear in print. For years thought to have been published on 24 April 1789, it has now been conclusively shown that the book actually appeared on 4 April, a scant fortnight after the first vessels of the First Fleet returned. Long recognised as one of the scarcest of any of the First Fleet accounts, Tench's first book was actually published days, not weeks, after the various "Officer" and other chapbook accounts, which adds something to our understanding of the first rush of British interest in news from down-under.Tench's book not only predates the other First Fleet accounts, but it is also arguably the most readable and the most sympathetic (it is also the rarest to find in a complete state). John White's journal apart, the others are more or less official in tone; none has the directness of Tench's description of life in the first days of the colony.Tench signs off the preface to his book "Sydney Cove, Port Jackson, New South Wales, July 10, 1788". Tench had come to an arrangement with the London publisher, Debrett, before he left England. His account proved popular, not surprisingly in view of the large public that would have been curious for news of the colony, and three editions in English, a Dublin piracy, as well as French, German, Swedish and Dutch translations all appeared quickly.Tench played an important role in the early exploration of the area around Sydney (he discovered the Nepean River and traced it to the Hawkesbury, and began the many attempts to conquer the Blue Mountains). Yet his most important role in the history of the convict settlement at Sydney Cove was as a writer who spread information for the general public in Britain while preserving important details for posterity. He was a lively, good-humoured and cultured member of the new society, and these qualities come through in his book which gives a vivid picture of the voyage out, and the establishment of the town at Sydney Cove. Apart from its importance as the first genuine description of the new colony, Tench's narrative provides us with the clearest of the surviving images of the first crucial months of settlement.
