The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay

Contemporary calf, red morocco label to spine, gilt, expertly rebacked, bookplate to front pastedown. First edition, deluxe issue. Frontispiece portrait, engraved title (in the first state) and 54 engraved plates & charts (31 hand-colored). 6, [errata, blank], viii, [8 list of subscribers], [3 list of plates, blank], x, 298, lxxiv, [2ads] pp. 4to. THE RAREST AND MOST DESIRABLE FIRST FLEET BOOK. A beautiful copy of the best First Fleet book in the rare deluxe issue: the official account by its first governor. "A work of primary importance for Australian history" (Hill). Compiled primarily from Phillip's journal, it also includes material from John Shortland, John Watts, Henry Lidberg Ball and John Marshall. Less known is that it includes the first published account of La Perouse's expedition and it was due to Phillip that the documentation of the latter half of the expedition was saved. Phillip's role in the founding of the colony cannot be overstated: "He had a major hand in the organization of the expedition which was elaborately and expensively equipped. He took the fleet of eleven ships (afterwards called the first fleet) out from Portsmouth on 13 May 1787 ... The voyage was notable for its excellent health and disciplinary record. Preferring Port Jackson, some 12 miles to the north, Phillip began the European settlement of Australia at Sydney Cove on 26 January ... [Despite many hardships in the first years of the colony,] Phillip showed considerable ingenuity in managing people and events. He made particular groups responsible for their own food supplies, and in 1790 sent some hundreds of the colonists to the lush Norfolk Island. Holding out inducements of freedom and land, he gave the convicts a stake in the emergent society, where from the first law functioned significantly differently from in England. Notwithstanding a failed punitive expedition against the Aborigines in December 1790, Phillip's rule was marked by an unusual egalitarianism and humanity. He encountered many difficulties, but, by the time ill health and family concerns forced him to leave at the end of 1792, it was clear that the colony would survive" (ODNB). A naval veteran, Arthur Phillip (1738-1814) was apparently at sea by the age of nine and in 1751 was enrolled at the Royal Naval School in Greenwich. He fought in the Seven Years War, participated in the capture of Martinique and the siege of Havana. He is generally thought to have been a spy and even enlisted in the Portuguese navy for a time. Importantly, Phillip - as per ODNB - "always understood that the colony was to be something more than a dumping ground for convicts. Envisaging European commercial expansion in the Pacific Ocean and about the Pacific rim, he told his patron the marquess of Lansdowne that in Sydney's matchless harbour 'a Thousand Sail of the Line may ride in the most perfect Security'; and he told Sir Charles Middleton 'that hereafter, when this Colony is the seat of Empire, there is room for ships of all Nations' ... He was not a great person, perhaps; however, he did great work in New South Wales, and gave the new society features it retains still." "Phillip's writing was like the man himself: honest, direct and unaffected ... It offers a full record of events both on land and on sea in the first months of the settlement, detailing the early expeditions of Philllip and the other officers into the interior around Botany Bay and Port Jackson..." (Wantrup). This copy bears the bookplate of George O'Brien Wyndham, third earl of Egremont. A noted art patron and agriculturalist (not to mention philanderer), this work with its beautiful colored plates would naturally have been of interest to him. The list of subscribers attests to the anticipation surrounding the publication of this work: Thomas Pennant, John Latham, Joseph Banks, Alexander Dalrymple and George Staunton to name but a few. The list of convicts is a major source for Australian genealogy. Ferguson, 47; Hill, 1347; Nissen ZBI, 3158; Wantrup, 5

AN EXTRAORDINARY RARITY! Leaves From George Washington’s Own Draft of His First Inaugural Address

1789 - Autograph Manuscript, Pages 27-28, 35-36, and 47-48 of Washington's own draft of his undelivered inaugural address. [written ca. January 1789]. 6 pp. on 3 leaves, 7 x 9 in. "This Constitution, is really in its formation a government of the people"George Washington understood that the new government's success, as had the Constitutional Convention's, rested squarely on his shoulders. He also knew that everything he did as the first president would set precedents for future generations. He wrote privately about the promise, ambiguity, and tension of high office, and these same themes are woven throughout his original, undelivered inaugural address. Would the government work as intended, or suffer death from a thousand cuts? Still, the former Commander in Chief recognized the nation's potential, as well as the honorable men who had come together to build the Constitution. The three unique leaves-six pages-offered here are written entirely in Washington's hand. They include assertions that government power is derived from the people, and a highly significant section of the Address explicitly arguing that the Constitution is subject to amendment and, by implication, advocating the adoption of the Bill of Rights. They also include the oratorical climax of the address-arguably the most visionary and impassioned passage of the address. In the first leaf offered here, pages 27 and 28, Washington reasserts the Jeffersonian notion of the power being derived from the people:Although the agency I had in forming this system, and the high opinion I entertained of my Colleagues for their ability & integrity may have tended to warp my judgment in its favour.[it is my] fixed belief that this Constitution, is really in its formation a government of the people; that is to say, a government in which all power is derived from, and at stated periods reverts to them--and that, in its operation, it is purely, a government of Laws made & executed by the fair substitutes of the people alone. The election of the differt branches of Congress by the Freemen, either directly or indirectly is the pivot on which turns the first wheel of the government--a wheel which communicates motion to all the rest.Later, on pages 35 and 36 offered here, Washington expresses his faith in the American people and their ability to judge good leaders:until the people of America shall have lost all virtue; until they shall have become totally insensible to the difference between freedom & slavery; until they shall have been reduced to such poverty of spirit--as to be willing to sell that preeminent blessing, the birthright of Freemen, for a mess of pottage; in short, until they shall have been found incapable of governing themselves and ripe for a master those consequences, I think, can never arrive. He then hints at Continental expansion:My present object is to point out the means of encreasing & perpetuating the happiness of the people of that Country. To embrace this object the mind must dilate with the dimentions of a Continent, and extend with the revolutions of futurity. The New world is now becoming a stage for wonderful exhibitions. The discovery of another Continent, in some unknown Seas, could alone afford a Theatre for political actions. Finally returning to the virtue of an informed citizenry:The preliminary observation that a free government ought to be built on the information and virtue of the people will here find its proper place. Happily our Citizens are remarkably instructed by education, docile to duty [meaning 'willing to receive instruction, teachable,' i.e., be good citizens] & ingenious for making improvements. Finally, in the third leaf offered here, pages 47 and 48, Washington seeks to assure the nation of the ability to amend the Constitution (recognizing early demands for a Bill of Rights) and asks that the system be given a chance to work before being altered. He ends this leaf with a call to pay the nation'. (See website for full description)

THE CABINET-MAKER AND UPHOLSTERER'S GUIDE; OR, REPOSITORY OF DESIGNS FOR EVERY ARTICLE OF HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE, IN THE NEWEST AND MOST APPROVED TASTE

London, 1789. Folio. 20th-century red morocco, gilt, dentelles, a.e.g. Corners slightly bumped. Bookplates on front pastedown. Internally clean; one plate neatly repaired in the margin. A near fine copy. A key furniture pattern book of the late 18th century. This is the revised second edition, issued the year after the first. Issued by the Hepplewhite family firm, the work was published by George Hepplewhite's widow, Alice, the year after his death. "No compendium of furniture designs had appeared since 1762, when Thomas Chippendale issued the third edition of his GENTLEMAN AND CABINET- MAKER'S DIRECTOR. In publishing the Hepplewhite GUIDE the Taylors were filling a yawning gap. The plates were issued in batches at the beginning of July, September, and October 1787. In January and February 1788 a subscription was promoted in such papers as the Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford Mercury and Williamson's Liverpool Advertiser. The price was 2 guineas. The preface adopts a modest tone: 'To unite elegance and utility, and blend the useful with the agreeable, has ever been considered a difficult but an honourable task.' It stressed the GUIDE's utility to 'the mechanic', to 'young workmen in general, and occasionally to more experienced ones'. A successful subscription 'enabled us to exceed the number of plates originally proposed'" - DNB.

Preparing to Report to Congress on Public Credit, Alexander Hamilton Establishes the New U.S. Treasury Department’s Forms & Procedures

New York 1789 - Letter Signed as Treasury Secretary. New York, December 1, 1789. 2 pp., 8 x 10 in. The First Federal Congress established the Treasury Department on September 2, 1789, only three months before this letter. Hamilton became Secretary of the Treasury - actually the very first member of George Washington's cabinet - on September 11. Hamilton speedily created processes to organize and run the new nation's financial system. He requires weekly returns of cash receipts and disbursements, and notes that while monthly returns on import duties will normally not be required, they are for the year about to end. He mentions the need for this information so he can make timely reports to Congress near the beginning of their sessions, with "the information relative to the Revenue which they will necessarily require." In fact, responding to the request of Congress, Hamilton delivered his seminal Report on Public Credit on January 14, 1790. This letter, introducing his subordinate customs and tax collectors to the developing system, is an early and important part of the process. Complete Transcript(Circular) Treasury Department December 1st 1789The Comptroller of the Treasury will forward to you by this or the ensuing post, the whole of the Forms necessary for making your Returns to the Office, and rendering your Accts at the Treasury. You will observe that in these General Forms it is not required, that you should make a monthly Return of the Duties on Imports, and that in the Weekly Returns of the Cash Receipts and Disbursements (and not the Bonds) are only included. It is necessary however to observe that I have special reasons for directing you to make out Monthly Returns of the Merchandize imported, to the 31st of December Instant, in the mode pointed out in my former Circular Letters after which they may be discontinued. The public service requires the strictest care and Punctuality in adhering to the Forms now established and in forwarding them regularly to this Office; I therefore rely on your attention to these points, and if from any Circumstances you should be prevented from forwarding them, in course after they are made out, you will not omit to embrace the first Occasion of transmitting them as soon after as possible so that the whole of the returns required may be certain of reaching me with as little delay as possible. It is particularly desireable that the Returns to the end of the present month may be forwarded as soon after the expiration of it as possible; unless this is done I shall not be able to lay before the Legislature at the early part of their Sessions that information relative to the Revenue which they will necessarily require. I am sir Your obedient Servant A. Hamilton Secy of the TreasuryP.S It is not expected that in making up your accounts to the time [the] comptrollers instructions reach you, you will be able to adhere exactly to the forms of the Receipts transmitted you wither for the payment of the orders drawn on you heretofore, or other disbursements, such as you have taken for disbursements, must accompany your accounts as well as the orders &c with the Receipts on them-in other respects I presume you will be able to follow the forms-Historical BackgroundIn order to place the new nation on firm financial ground, Alexander Hamilton spearheaded the establishment of customs districts, a national bank, impost duties and excise taxes, and counter-intuitively proposed that the federal government take on most of the states' remaining Revolutionary war debts. Hamilton's ambitious plans for the federal government required information from a wide array of inspectors and collectors from districts ranging from Massachusetts to Georgia. In this circular letter, Hamilton introduces the forthcoming forms necessary to provide the Treasury with accurate information on the Returns.Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804). Born on the island of Nevis, in 1777, Hamilton became Washington's aide-de-ca. (See website for full description)

Fr. Mateo Ximenez.

Rome: Stamperia Salomoni I: 4to (24.2 cm, 9.5"). xvi pp., port., 228 pp., [1] f. II: 4to (23.5 cm, 9.125"). Engr. title, [100] of [129] plts.. 1789 From humble carter to revered and beatified lay Franciscan is not an easy course to pursue in life, but Sebastián de Aparicio (1502?-1600) accomplished it in Mexico. Although he was married multiple times, he is said to have remained chaste, deciding in 1574 to abandon his secular lifestyle for that of a lay Franciscan. He is said to have had great ability to manage and calm animals, including near-wild bulls. His life was filled with teaching, begging, and accomplishing near-impossible things. => Offered here is the first edition of Ximénez's biography of this beatified Mexican and the fine album of plates illustrating events in his life (see our caption, above). Finding the "life" and the volume of plates together is uncommon. Only by happenstance did the two volumes come to us within months of one another, from two different continents, allowing us to marry them for this offering. For example, in the U.S., only the Lilly and Bancroft Libraries report owning both works. There is some question as to the number of plates in a complete copy of the Colección: Some sources call for an engraved title-page and 128 plates, while others call for 129 plates. There seems not to have been an edition of the Vita in Spanish. Vita: Contemporary Italian binding of quarter leather with "wallpaper" covered boards; edges of boards seriously rubbed and exposing underlying paste boards. Internally very good. Colección: 20th-century Spanish quarter leather, with paper in imitation of treed calf on the covers. Private ownership stamps on title-page. Missing 29 plates; the other hundred in very good condition.

        Stirling Castle

London: Published by J. Grives, 103 Strand, 1789. Colour-printed aquatint with additional hand-colouring. Lovely contemporary colour. As usual text line is attached on verso of sheet. In excellent condition. Trimmed as usual and mounted on washline background. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 11 9/16 x 17 inches. A wonderful view of Stirling Castle, Scotland, in the grand tradition of the picturesque English landscape. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside, they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. At the same time the concept of the picturesque landscape developed amongst artists and printmakers across England and Europe. As an aesthetic theory the picturesque presents an idealized and sentimentalized view of nature. Using this concept, artists strove to depict nature as an aesthetic form, which was designed to evoke awe and amazement in the viewer. This practice developed a visual language for landscape painting that dominated the genre until the onset of the twentieth century. The effects of the picturesque on landscape painting, in a large measure, forms the way we see the countryside today, and the manner in which we perceive and interpret "beauty". According to "the picturesque" nature is wild and abandoned yet it conforms to a symmetrical structure that defines a sense of beauty and visual harmony. This is a wonderful example of a picturesque eighteenth century landscape print. By trimming the image within the platemark and mounting it on a decorative washline background the print has the effect of a landscape painting. The likeness is heightened by the addition of added body colour in the image and the use of a heavy painterly technique of engraving. This practice was common amongst engravers and printsellers who wished to capitalize on this trend for picturesque landscapes of the English countryside. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection, which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints. Clayton, The English Print 1688-1802 p. 155; Lugt, Les Marques de Collections , (Supplement) 2715a.

Kokeisai kyuho [Trans.: Emergency Remedies for the Benefit of the Public].

136 woodcut illus. in the text (a few heightened in delicate color). 101; 98; 98 folding leaves. Three vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers with orig. block printed title labels & indexes on upper covers (Vol. III with some unimportant worming), new stitching. Tokyo: 1789-90. First edition of this rare and richly illustrated book on emergency medicine, compiled by Motonori Taki (1731-1801), a member of a distinguished family of physicians. This work was written by order of the enlightened shogun Tokugawa Ieharu (reigned 1760-86), in an effort to spread practical medical knowledge amongst the general population. The book's success secured the position of Taki's family's private Institute of Medicine in Tokyo, which became a central training school for physicians to the shogun's court. Their Institute, whose teachings were based on Chinese medicine, was the main counterforce to the introduction of Western medicine in Japan and predominated until the second half of the 19th century. The three volumes cover every sort of medical emergency and include stroke, noxious fumes from wells and mines, cholera and other epidemics, vomiting of blood, blood in the urine, migraine, urinary obstructions, accidental cuts, wounds incurred during wartime, eye injuries, burns, frostbite, resuscitation of drowned or intoxicated people, accidental poisoning, ear infections, fractures, sexual excesses, postpartum emergencies, etc., etc. The author describes many pharmaceutical recipes based on Japanese plants and animals. Many of the ailments described in the book are treated by acupuncture and moxibustion. This work is beautifully illustrated with 136 handsome woodcuts, many of which are full-page. A fine set. ❧ Heirs of Hippocrates 1000. Mestler, "A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books," I, pp. 303-04-"Of interest in this general medical 'handbook' is an illustration of the most famous of all moxa spots, called 'sanri,' with detailed directions telling how to 'know' it...As is to be expected in a work of this nature, the remedies were based upon the adaptive use of things commonly found in the early Japanese home; and for medicines to be compounded from ordinary flowers, plants, or trees, and from animals, including birds, molluscs, and fish." .

Plan of a society established in London, anno domini 1785, for the support and encouragement of Sunday-Schools in the different counties of England; with a list of the subscribers, and extracts of letters received from various parts, containing accounts of the great utility of the institution.

London: printed in the year MDCCLXXXIX [1789]. 8vo. (in 4s), 80pp., in early, perhaps original, wrappers, the spine paper somewhat worn. A fine copy. Rare, as are all early editions. (ESTC finds 3 copies of a single-sheet plan probably of 1785, a single copy of a 32 page pamphlet dated 1786, a single copy of a 44 page pamphlet of 1787, 3 copies of another in 1788, and 3 copies of our 1789 printing - at BL + Lambeth Palace + Un. of Kansas). 'The initiative that led to its foundation came chiefly from a well-to-do Baptist merchant and philanthropist, William Fox, who had already founded a free day school at Clapton, where he was lord of the manor. He had been canvassing the possibility of a national system of education, and he discovered in Raikes's plan the basis for such a system. The Society, which eventually emerged out of a meeting called by Fox in August 1785, was formed to promote Sunday Schools and thus to rescue the children of the poor 'from low habits of vice and idleness, and to initiate them into a moral and religious course of life.' The primary medium of reformation was assumed to be the Bible. Hence the overpowering emphasis on reading instruction, with the Bible, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Catechism as the chief vehicles, and acceptance by the Society of responsibility for providing these and other text books. The founders were determined to submerge sectarian differences. Evangelicals had no prejudice against working with Nonconformists, and the Sunday School Society offers an admirable instance of that cooperation.' [David Owen, English philanthropy>, p.114]. In 1789, the management committee of 24 men included William Fox, Thomas Raikes, Samuel Hoare, and Samuel Thornton. The treasurer was the M.P. and philanthropist, Henry Thornton. With whatever measure of cynicism modern historians may now view this Sunday School movement, its rapid achievements are undeniable. By 1789 it had established 610 schools, educated 41,295 scholars, given away 46,639 spelling books, 13,144 testaments, and 3,261 bibles.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Mrs. Goodall

London: Published by R. Sayer & Co. Fleet Street, 1789. Stipple, colour printed a la poupée. Printed on wove paper. Collectors blindstamp of a star in left margin. Collectors mark not identified in Lugt but attributed to the eighteenth century. In excellent condition. This charming colour-printed portrait by Robert Laurie depicts the celebrated actress Charlotte Goodall in the character of Adeline in "The Battle of Hexham". Charlotte Goodall (1766-1830) was the daughter of Stanton, who managed a "sharing company" in Staffordshire. She joined the stage at an early age, and made her first successful début in Bath as Rosalind in "As You Like It." She made a name for herself as a Shakespearean actress in the provinces and quickly joined Kemble's Drury Lane theatre in London. She was primarily a supporting actress, working with such noted thespians as Mrs. Farren and Mrs. Jordan, but she was known for her roles in "breechers parts," playing such noted cross-dressers as Viola in "Twelfth Night," and Adeline in George Coleman's "The Battle of Hexham." It is in this celebrated role, as the cross-dressing Adeline, that Laurie depicts Mrs. Goodall. "The Battle of Hexham" was a three-act musical drama in which an abandoned wife, Adeline, disguises herself as a soldier in order to search for her fugitive husband, Gondibert.         Bibliotheca Americana; or, a chronological catalogue of the most curious and interesting books, pamphlets, state papers, &c. upon the subject of North and South America, from the earliest period to the present, in print and manuscript ... with an introductory discourse on the present state of literature in those countries

London: printed for J. Debrett, J. Sewell, R. Baldwin & J. Bew and E. Harlowe, 1789. Quarto. (10 x 8 inches). (Expert repairs to title page, some spotting). Expertly bound to style in half calf over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco lettering piece Provenance: New Jersey College Library (early ink stamp to upper margin of title). First edition of this important work on early printed and manuscript Americana, with a valuable introductory essay This anonymous work has in the past been ascribed variously to "[Alexander] Dalrymple, Homer, Long, and Reid" (Church), but is now known to have been written by the miscellaneous writer Leman Thomas Rede, a student of the Middle Temple (cf. Stuart C. Sherman The William and Mary Quarterly , 3rd Ser., Vol. 4, No. 3 (Jul., 1947), pp. 332-349). According to the title Rede compiled the work from the holdings of the British Museum "and the most celebrated public and private libraries, reviews, catalogues, &c.". It is of particular value as it includes manuscript material in addition to printed works, and also for the 17pp. "Introductory Discourse on the State of Literature in North and South America," which includes musings on the benefits of freedom of the press to the development of "Genius," as well as interesting details of bookselling in the United States. The demand was for small format works on practical matters; imported books were generally cheaper than home-produced editions (even with the hefty premiums that booksellers were able to place on the imports) because of the cost of materials and printers' wages.         FRENCH REVOLUTION: IERE ATTAQUE DE LA BASTILLE PRISE D'ASSAUT EN 3. HEURES DE TEMPS, LE 14. JUILLET 1789.

      - Rare etching and colour aquatint, printed from four plates, shows the Fall of the Bastille on the First day of the French revolution. - This magnificent rare etching and aquatint printed in colour shows the attack on the Bastille in Paris during the first day of the French Revolution on July 14 1789. The etching was made by a French artist Laurent Guyot (1756-1808), who personally witnessed and sketched some of the events during the first days of the French Revolution. Guyot lived and worked in Versailles and Paris and had connections with British printers of the time. He was known for his colour prints. The extremely demanding printing technique of etching and colour aquatint was aiming to reproduce painted colours and make painting approachable for wider audience. This engraving is printed from four plates: black etching and aquatint, and red, blue and green aquatinted plates. All the Guyot’s works are rare on the market. References: De Vinck, 1552.         Essays on physiognomy, designed to promote the knowledge and the love of mankind ... illustrated by more than eight hundred engravings accurately copied; and some duplicates added from originals.

London: Printed for John Murray, No. 32, Fleet-Street; H. Hunter, D.D. Charles's-Square; and T. Holloway, No. 11, Bache's-Row, Hoxton 4to in 2's (34.1 cm, 13.4"). 3 vols. in 5. I: [11] ff., iv, [10], 281 pp. (i.e., 285); 15 plates. II, part 1: xii, 238 pp.; 45 plates. II, part 2: [3] ff., pp. [239]?-444; 47 plates. III, pt. 1: xii, 252 pp.; 25 plates. III, pt. 2: [3] ff., pp. 253-437 (i.e., 181 pp.), [9] pp.; 42 plates.. 1789?-98 First edition in English of => Lavater's study of character based on physical attributes. Originally published in German (Physiognomische Fragmente, 1775?-78), these influential Essays were translated into English by Henry Hunter (1741?-1802) from the subsequent French edition (La Haye, 1781-87), and published in 41 parts under the direction of Royal Academy artists Henry Fuseli (1741?-1825) and Thomas Holloway (1748?-1827), who both contributed illustrations. In fact, Lavater (1741?-1801), a Swiss priest and poet, had no part in the new publication; Hunter arranged the endeavor with Holloway and publisher John Murray without the consent of the author, who learned of the project after it had gone to press, and objected, fearing a new edition would subtract from sales of the old. These books contain => over 360 engraved illustrations in the text and => 132 full-page engraved plates, many of which Holloway copied directly from the French edition; it's the multiple images on the full-page plates that produce the proud claim of "more than 800 engravings" on the title-page. They include => portraits of famous wrinkled writers, philosophers, musicians, monarchs, statesmen, and Lavater himself; silhouettes of Jesus and portraits of Mary; details of male, female, and animal attributes; and skulls, hairlines, eyes, noses, and mouths, among other features, engraved by Holloway, Fuseli, William Blake (1757?-1827), James Neagle (1765?-1822), Anker Smith (1759?-1819), James Caldwall (1739?-ca. 1819), Isaac Taylor (1730?-1807), and William Sharp (1749?-1824), inter alios, after works of art by Rubens, Van Dyke, Raphael, Fuseli, LeBrun, Daniel Chodowiecki (1726?-1801). The commentary on these images makes this a work of => art history/criticism, as Lavater is both free and detailed in his notes of how various artists handle details of physiognomy and body language to express character and engender beauty. The first systematic treatise on physiognomy was written by Aristotle. Publications on the subject continued steadily throughout the ages, although the developing study of anatomy in the 17th century detracted interest from what later came to be known as pseudoscience. Lavater's is the only notable treatise in the 18th century, and indeed, ". . . [his] name would be forgotten but for [this] work," which was very popular in France, Germany, and England (EB). Provenance: Bookplate of Nicholas Power on front pastedown of all five volumes (related to Richard Power, Esq., of Ireland, listed as a subscriber?); and bookplate of Gordon Abbott on front free endpaper of three volumes, engraved by J.W. Spenceley of Boston in 1905. Contemporary calf ruled and tooled in gilt and blind with gilt board edges and gilt turn-ins, rebacked old style; marbled edges, and blue silk marker in all volumes. Extremities rubbed and corners bumped with small loss to leather. At least one small marginal tear in each volume; offsetting from letterpress on a few leaves; very mild to quite moderate foxing (or none) on illustrations, offset onto surrounding leaves; and other occasional minor stains. Most plates protected by tissue. => A monument of labor, art, and excellent "system" devoted to an exploded but fascinating theory; in fact, a wonder.

Contemporary French blue half morocco over paper-covered boards, the spines in six compartments with wide semi-raised bands, the bands decorated with a gilt decorative roll and flanked by gilt fillets, the second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, the others with repeat decoration built up from small tools, marbled endpapers A fine copy of this fascinating survey of the religious ceremonies of the world. A beautifully illustrated work with images that were adapted by Picart and others from various sources, including (in volumes I and II) about 30 plates taken from the famous illustrations in de Bry's description of life in the Americas. Volume II also includes an important series of 15 plates offering a contemporary picture of the life and ceremonies of Jews in Europe. This work is based on Picart's Ceremonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde published in Amsterdam between 1723 and 1743 and, according to the title, includes all the plates that appear in the earlier work. The text for this edition appears to have been so extensively rewritten and improved by Poncelin that it almost amounts to a new and separate work. cf. Brunet I, 1743; cf. Sabin 4932.

A Voyage round the World; but more particularly to the North-West coast of America: performed in 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788, in the King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon

published by Geo. Goulding, London 1789 - (10 3/4 x 8 3/8 inches). 22 engraved maps, charts, plates and coastal profiles after Dixon, J. Hogan, William Lewin and others, by Barlow, P. Mazell and others (including 5 folding maps and charts, 2 folding coastal profiles, 1 plate of engraved music, 14 plates [1 folding, 7 of natural history subjects hand coloured]). Contemporary tree calf, expertly rebacked to style, flat spine in six compartments, black morocco lettering piece in the second, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt Provenance: Viscount Palmerston (armorial bookplate) A deluxe large-paper, hand coloured copy of the first edition of this important account of an early exploratory voyage to Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest. "Dixon's voyage is important as a supplement to Captain Cook and for its contribution to the natural history of the Pacific Northwest. The purpose of the expedition was to establish a trade in furs in North America, but the itinerary also includes the Isle of Guernsey, Cape Verde Islands, Falkland Islands, Cape Horn, Sandwich Islands (three times), Cook's River, King George's Sound, Prince William Sound, Macao, Canton, and St. Helena. The voyage was sent out by the King George's Sound Company, which owned both the King George , commanded by expedition leader Captain Nathaniel Portlock, as well as the Queen Charlotte . The two ships sailed independently of each other for part of the expedition. Both Portlock and Dixon had served on Cook's third voyage. The work previously done by Cook along the northwest coast of America was mapped more definitely by Dixon, who discovered the Queen Charlotte Islands, Port Mulgrave, Norfolk Bay, and Dixon Entrance and Archipelago while continuing down the coast and trading with the Indians. The accounts of this expedition relate largely to the geography, ethnology, and natural history of the American coast from Nootka Sound northward" (Hill). The bulk of the text is in the form of a series of letters from William Beresford (aboard the Queen Charlotte), but supplemented by tables and observations from Dixon himself, who also edited and corrected the whole work. Dixon was also directly responsible for a number of the maps, charts and plates which are engraved from his originals. The regular issue, published at 1£.1s, contains no hand coloured plates and is generally less than 10 1/2 inches in height; a small number of copies were printed on larger, thicker paper with the natural history plates hand coloured, as in the present copy.       O. O., [zwischen Frühjahr 1786 und Sommer 1789]. - 1½ SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt (Wasserzeichen: doppelstrichige Antiquaversalien "SKW"). 4to.

[2] ff., 169, [1 (blank)] pp., [1] f., 50 pp., fold. plt.. 1789 Fr. Rico, an Oratorian, describes the memorial services in Lima on the occasion of the death of King Carlos III, as well as the commemorative art work and its Neo-Latin epigraphs. Fray Bernardo Rueda's "Oracion funebre que en las solemnes exequias del Rey nuestro señor don Carlos III" has a sectional title-page and its own pagination. The folding plate is of =>the funeral monument erected in the king's memory. It is an extremely well executed, large engraving, signed by Vazquez and dated at Lima, 1789. NUC and WorldCat locate only three copies in the U.S. Searches of CCPB and the OPAC of the Spanish national library locate three Spanish libraries reporting ownership; COPAC finds no copies in Britain. => The number of "splendid ceremonies" books produced in colonial Peru is small: There is no census but we suspect the number to be around 20. Other interesting aspects of the work are that it is an important source on the social and artistic life of Lima in the decade following the Tupac Amaru rebellion and that it is from one of Latin America's famous presses of "orphan children. Contemporary limp vellum with neatly inked title on spine; all edges inked decoratively. Old blurred stamp on front free endpaper, old single numerals very faintly on title-pages. Small tear in margin of plate, not into image. Overall a very good copy, very clean and with wide margins.

Fr. Mateo Ximenez.

Rome: Stamperia Salomoni I: 4to (24.2 cm, 9.5"). xvi pp., port., 228 pp., [1] f. II: 4to (23.5 cm, 9.125"). Engr. title, [100] of [129] plts.. 1789 From humble carter to revered and beatified lay Franciscan is not an easy course to pursue in life, but Sebastián de Aparicio (1502–1600) accomplished it in Mexico.
