Sir Joseph Banks and the Emperor of Morocco, Etc.

      G. Kearsley et al, London - 1788-1793. 27; 30 (2); 104; 56; 34 (2); 50; 18 (2); iv, 39; 70; 10; 63; 58; 72; vi, 47; 22; 77; 41 p. 27 cm. Humorous frontispiece. Ref. lib. stickers inside front board, lacks rear endpaper, light foxing and stains throughout. Peter Pindar was the pseudonym for satirist and poet John Wolcot (1738-1819). He graduated as M.D. at Aberdeen, and accompanied Sir William Trelawny as physician to the governor of Jamaica. His peculiar medicinal methods, which consisted in encouraging his fever patients to drink cold water, and his opinion that a physician could do little more than watch nature and 'give her a shove on the back if he sees her inclined to do right' involved him in disputes with his professional brethren. The poet's humour was generally coarse, and not infrequently profane. He soon discovered a paying enterprise in ridiculing the private life of the king. After the gov't attempted to secure silence by the bestowal of a pension, and the queen's solicitor got into action, he confined himself to smaller game, such as Sir Joseph Banks, Sylvanus Urban, and James Bruce the African traveller. In 1793 he sold the copyright of his existing works to J. Walker, the publisher. He was buried in St.Paul's Church, Covent Garden, where by his own wish his coffin was placed touching that of Samuel Butler. He had many imitators, who wrote under the same and similar names. --"Sir Joseph Banks and the Emperor of Morocco. A Tale. + A Poetical Epistle to a Falling Minister; also an Imitation of the Twelfth Ode of Horace. + Subjects For Painters. + Expostulatory Odes to a Great Duke and a Little Lord. +A Benevolent Epistle to Sylvanus Urban, alias Master John Nichols, Printer, Common-Councilman of Farringdon Ward, and Censor General of Literature; Not Forgetting Master William Hayley: in which is added, An Elegy to Apollo; also Sir Joseph Banks and the Boiled Fleas, an ode. + A Rowland for an Oliver; or a Poetical Answer to the Benevolent Epistle of Mr. Peter indar.

Leg. in p. pelle scura marocchina.

Four octavo volumes. The Florentine Filippo Mazzei knew the United States more intimately, and was more involved in American life and politics, than any other Italian of the eighteenth century. He had come to know Franklin while representing the Grand Duke in London; he obtained land in Virginia next to young Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and imported laborers from Lucca to raise olives and vines. His Recherches, written after his return to Paris, where he was a champion of the new nation's cause, was the fullest account of the new Republic available to Europeans at the time. The first volume is a constitutional history of the thirteen colonies; the second and third rebut two books critical of America; the fourth is a collection of essays on a variety of subjects including a refutation of charges of anarchy in America, an explanation of paper money, emigration, and on Washington, Lafayette and the Order of the Cincinnati. Altogether the most extensive examination of the United States during the confederation period, written by a sympathetic foreigner. Bound in contemporary red paper boards, leather spine labels. Sabin 47206; DAB XII: 469-470; Sowerby, Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson 3005; Antonello Gerbi, Dispute of the New World (Pittsburgh, 1973) 268-275; Hough, The Italians and the Creation of America (Providence, 1980) 95.         Pope Diaqkos leading the Dervenochoites into combat."

Philhellenic: Munich H. Kohler c1835. Tinted lithograph, as issued, of Athanasios Diakos, from Peter von Hess's Album of Greek Heroism, or the Deliverance of Greece / Griechenlands Befreiung ... in XXXIX Bildern.[ First edition.] within decorative borders incorporating captions in Greek, German, French & English. The borders are decorated with guns, swords and helmets with the Greek flag to the left; on the right a crucifix and other emblems of the Christian church; at the top Turkish weapons, laid down, with a fez ,and below, sails and naval instruments. Athanasios Diakos 1788 –1821 born Athanasios Nikolaos Massavetas. Battle of Alamana on April 22, 1821.Omer Vrioni, the commander of the Ottoman army, advanced with 8,000 men from Thessaly to crush the revolt that had broken out in Peloponnesos. Athanasios Diakos Panourgias Panourgias and Yiannis Dyovouniotis with their bands of armatoloi (a total of perhaps 1,500 men) took up defensive positions at the river Alamana , near Thermopylae. Vrioni's attack forced Panourgias and Dyovouniotis to retreat, leaving Diakos alone. Diakos's men fought for several hours before they were overwhelmed. Eventually, Diakos himself was captured and taken to Vrioni after he was shot in the foot and had his sword broken. When Vrioni offered to make Diakos an officer in his army, Diakos immediately refused and replied: "I was born a Greek and I will die a Greek". Vrioni then ordered that Diakos be impaled on a spit . The Ottomans btried to make Diakos carry the long spit, but he threw it down with contempt. As he was led off to die, onlookers heard him sing: "Look at the time Charon chose to take me, now that branches are flowering, now that the earth sends forth grass". Image bright and clean; a few light spots to blank borders. Peter( Heinrich Lambert} von Hess 1792-1871, was a German painter, known for historic paintings, especially of the Napoleonic Wars and the Greek War of Independence. In 1833, at Ludwig's request, he accompanied Otto of Greece to the newly formed Kingdom of Greece, where at Athens he gathered materials for pictures of the war of liberation. He stayed nine months in Greece, interviewing heroes and eyewitnesses of the 1821 revolution. His first- hand knowledge of the heroes gives power to his work. He drew 39 historical persons The sketches which he then made were placed, forty in number, in the Pinakothek, after being copied in wax on a large scale by Nilsen, in the northern arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich, [sadly now destroyed]. It should be noted that Hess was not present during the Revolution; the paintings are representations of reported events. many are of Greek victories, or of heroic deaths of the Greek leaders. Not in Blackmer ,Droulia or Contominas. Philhellenic Athanasios Diakos.

A few plates with light marginal foxing, one or two leaves creased, but INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY IN VERY FINE CONDITION, the binding especially bright, the text unusually fresh, and with strong impressions of the attractive plates. These "Romances" comprise eight sentimental rhymed ballads on such themes as unhappy love, happy love, and the innocence of childhood. The majority are original creations of the author, but "The Hermit" is translated from the English of Goldsmith, while a Scottish origin is claimed for the first poem, which evokes the lament of a young mother abandoned by her lover. The author, Arnaud Berquin (1749-91), was best known for his children's books, including the popular "L'ami des Enfants," and a translation of the often printed English favorite, "Sandford and Merton." Apart from the lovely binding, the chief pleasure of the present book lies in the illustrations, which depict, in a skilled and frothy Rococo style, the charming and fragile world of the French nobility just before the revolutionary deluge. Our edition marks the first appearance of these endearing plates; previous editions of "Romances" had used illustrations by Marillier. The artist, Antoine Borel (1743-1810), also illustrated historical scenes and was known for his erotica. The imprint used here indicates that our press was under the patronage of "Monsieur," the brother of Louis XVI, who later ruled as Louis XVIII. Books in the library of Sir David Lionel Salomons (1851-1925) were chosen with careful discrimination, with the goal always to obtain copies in very fine condition. The collection was notable particularly for 18th and 19th century illustrated books. Before portions of the library found their way into the marketplace, the books passed into the hands of Salomons' daughter, Vera, the noted bibliographer of French illustrated books, and afterwards to the L. A. Mayer Memorial Institute for Islamic Art in Jerusalem, which had received an endowment from her.

        The Indian Reed [Pl. 35]

[London]: 1788. Hand-coloured engraving by Edwards. Very good condition. 13 3/8 x 9 3/4 inches. 21 3/8 x 15 inches. A beautifully designed image from Edwards "A Collection of Flowers drawn after Nature...", a superb and rare work. Edwards lived in London until about 1778 when he moved to Surrey, exhibiting at the Society of Artists, of which he was a member, and at the Royal Academy. In addition to the fine arts, he also provided designs for textiles, particularly cotton calico. Between 1769 and 1770 he published Edwards British Herbal in monthly parts, with text garnered from the works of contemporary botanists and 100 fine hand-coloured engraved plates from his own designs. The plates show that his interests lay not so much in the accurate depiction of botanical specimens as the design possibilities of beautiful flowers. The present work, his masterpiece, was his next publishing venture. Working from the imprint dates of the plates it is clear that he began to publish designs for the work in 1783, with plates being completed periodically throughout the 1780s and well into the following decade. Unlike his previous work, all the plates are designed, etched and coloured by Edwards himself, a process which gave him complete control over the publication. Cf. Dunthorne 105; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p 93; cf. Henrey III 673; cf. Nissen BBI 579; cf. Oak Spring Flora p 64.

Odysseus and Guras are defeating the Turks at Fontana."

Philhellenic: Munich H. Kohler c1835. Tinted lithograph, as issued, of Odysseas Androutsos from Peter von Hess's Album of Greek Heroism, or the Deliverance of Greece / Griechenlands Befreiung ... in XXXIX Bildern.[ First edition.] within decorative borders incorporating captions in Greek, German, French & English. The borders are decorated with guns, swords and helmets with the Greek flag to the left; on the right a crucifix and other emblems of the Christian church; at the top Turkish weapons, laid down, with a fez ,and below, sails and naval instruments. Odysseas Androutsos 1788–1825. Androutsos joined the Turkish army of Ali Pasha and became an officer; however, in 1818 he joined the Filiki Eteria which was planning the liberation of Greece from the Ottoman Empire. in the Summer of 1821 Odysseus with Gouras had a famous victory against 5000 Turks at Fontana close to Livadia; having ambushed the Turkish advance of 300 horses they were attacked by the full force of the Turks on 31st August. Gouras rallied the Greeks as they were being overpowered and they eventually routed the Turks, leaving 1200 of them on the field. Image bright and clean; light spotting to blank borders. Philhellenic Odysseas Androutsos

Edinburgh 1788 - Tall folio (477 x 285mm). 10 engraved plates including four folding (several marginal closed tears without loss), library stamps to title and plates, some spotting and soiling throughout, Birmingham Library bookplate to front pastedown, near-contemporary cloth, rubbed and soiled, some loss to head and foot of spine. --- Garrison-Morton 399.2; Heirs of Hippocrates 1011; NLM/Blake p. 309; Russell 613; Wellcome IV p. 156. - FIRST EDITION. "The first serious study of this subject and the most original anatomical work by the greatest of the Monro dynasty" (Garrison-Morton). "This classic work contains the first full anatomical description of the sacs between the tendons and bones which Albinus had named the bursae mucosae. They are illustrated on ten plates which for explicit clarity and accuracy have not been improved upon" (Heirs of Hippocrates).         Acis and Galatea [HWV 49]: A Serenata Composed for the Duke of Chandos in the Year 1720 [sic]

[London: Samuel Arnold, ca. 1788]. Nos. 28-30 of Arnold's edition of the works of Handel. Folio. Engraved title page, engraved score for voice and instrumental ensemble; [3]-103, [1] pp. Modern half maroon-morocco gilt, lightly sunned at spine head, some foxing throughout (generally contained to margins), part names in pencil on contents leaf. Smith, HANDEL: A DESCRIPTIVE CATALOG OF THE EARLY EDITIONS, p. 85, no. 17. OCLC: 3 copies . Handel's first dramatic work in English, a pastoral masque based on Ovid's METAMORPHOSIS, with a libretto by John Gay and incorporating works of Dryden, Pope, and others. Written 1718 when Handel was resident composer at Cannons to the Duke of Chandos, ACIS AND GALATEA was partially published in 1722, first publicly performed in 1731, and put through various revisions, permutations and editions thereafter (including an arrangement by Mozart). It proved to be one of Handel's most popular dramatic works during his lifetime and has been steadily performed ever since. This late 18th-century edition is nos. 28-30 of Samuel Arnold's proposed complete works of Handel (he published 180 numbers), which did much to spread the composer's reputation abroad and to preserve works now lost in manuscript. It retains the two-act format that Handel adopted in 1739 (the work was originally written in three acts) with the added chorus at the end of Act I. A handsome, early setting of one of Handel's enduring triumphs. "... in inspiration, conception and execution it remains wholly individual." (Grove)

NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA.

Philadelphia: Prichard and Hall, 1788. - [4],244pp. plus folding table and 4pp. of ads. Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down, gilt with leather label. Endpapers renewed with contemporary paper. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Title with scattered foxing, light scattered tanning and foxing in text. The first American edition. This is the only book-length work by Jefferson to be published in his lifetime. It has been called "one of America's first permanent literary and intellectual landmarks." The book was largely written in 1781 and first printed in Paris in 1785, in French, for private distribution. In 1786, Jefferson consented to a regularly published French edition; the first English edition appeared in London in 1787, and this first American edition in 1788. Written in the form of answers to questions about Virginia, it supplied a description of the geography, and develops an abundance of supporting material and unusual information. As J.M. Edelstein notes: "Jefferson wrote about things which interested him deeply and about which he knew a great deal; the NOTES, therefore, throws a fascinating light on his tastes, curiosities, and political and social opinions." Appendixes to the present edition, totaling thirty pages, were furnished by Charles Thomson (1729-1824), the first secretary to Congress. Born in Ireland, Thomson arrived in Delaware at the age of ten, one of six orphaned children. He was educated in Chester County, Pa., and in 1750, through the influence of Benjamin Franklin, received an appointment as tutor in the Philadelphia Academy, where his pupils must have included Jacob Duché and Francis Hopkinson. Later he was an active participant in Pennsylvania politics, and was in the forefront of all the colonial controversies with Great Britain. He served the Continental Congress as secretary for fifteen years, at the end of which, in 1789, he was chosen to notify Washington of his election to the presidency. HOWES J78, "aa."
