Odysseus and Guras are defeating the Turks at Fontana."

Philhellenic: Munich H. Kohler c1835. Tinted lithograph, as issued, of Odysseas Androutsos from Peter von Hess's Album of Greek Heroism, or the Deliverance of Greece / Griechenlands Befreiung ... in XXXIX Bildern.[ First edition.] within decorative borders incorporating captions in Greek, German, French & English. The borders are decorated with guns, swords and helmets with the Greek flag to the left; on the right a crucifix and other emblems of the Christian church; at the top Turkish weapons, laid down, with a fez ,and below, sails and naval instruments. Odysseas Androutsos 1788–1825. Androutsos joined the Turkish army of Ali Pasha and became an officer; however, in 1818 he joined the Filiki Eteria which was planning the liberation of Greece from the Ottoman Empire. in the Summer of 1821 Odysseus with Gouras had a famous victory against 5000 Turks at Fontana close to Livadia; having ambushed the Turkish advance of 300 horses they were attacked by the full force of the Turks on 31st August. Gouras rallied the Greeks as they were being overpowered and they eventually routed the Turks, leaving 1200 of them on the field. Image bright and clean; light spotting to blank borders. Peter( Heinrich Lambert} von Hess 1792-1871, was a German painter, known for historic paintings, especially of the Napoleonic Wars and the Greek War of Independence. In 1833, at Ludwig's request, he accompanied Otto of Greece to the newly formed Kingdom of Greece, where at Athens he gathered materials for pictures of the war of liberation. He stayed nine months in Greece, interviewing heroes and eyewitnesses of the 1821 revolution. His first- hand knowledge of the heroes gives power to his work. He drew 39 historical persons The sketches which he then made were placed, forty in number, in the Pinakothek, after being copied in wax on a large scale by Nilsen, in the northern arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich, [sadly now destroyed]. It should be noted that Hess was not present during the Revolution; the paintings are representations of reported events. many are of Greek victories, or of heroic deaths of the Greek leaders. Not in Blackmer ,Droulia or Contominas. Philhellenic Odysseas Androutsos

A Description of all the Bursae Mucosae of the Human Body, their Structure Explained, and Compared with that of the Capsular Ligaments of the Joints, and of those Sacs which line the Cavities of the Thorax and Abdomen.

Edinburgh 1788 - Tall folio (477 x 285mm). 10 engraved plates including four folding (several marginal closed tears without loss), library stamps to title and plates, some spotting and soiling throughout, Birmingham Library bookplate to front pastedown, near-contemporary cloth, rubbed and soiled, some loss to head and foot of spine. --- Garrison-Morton 399.2; Heirs of Hippocrates 1011; NLM/Blake p. 309; Russell 613; Wellcome IV p. 156. - FIRST EDITION. "The first serious study of this subject and the most original anatomical work by the greatest of the Monro dynasty" (Garrison-Morton). "This classic work contains the first full anatomical description of the sacs between the tendons and bones which Albinus had named the bursae mucosae. They are illustrated on ten plates which for explicit clarity and accuracy have not been improved upon" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Of these plates, four are particularly remarkable for having life-sized representations of the arm and leg bones - from finger and toe-tip to shoulder and hip bone. Each of these is constructed from two sheets and as a result, some copies of the work are found with the plates in two parts, and others incomplete. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Acis and Galatea [HWV 49]: A Serenata Composed for the Duke of Chandos in the Year 1720 [sic]

[London: Samuel Arnold, ca. 1788]. Nos. 28-30 of Arnold's edition of the works of Handel. Folio. Engraved title page, engraved score for voice and instrumental ensemble; [3]-103, [1] pp. Modern half maroon-morocco gilt, lightly sunned at spine head, some foxing throughout (generally contained to margins), part names in pencil on contents leaf. Smith, HANDEL: A DESCRIPTIVE CATALOG OF THE EARLY EDITIONS, p. 85, no. 17. OCLC: 3 copies . Handel's first dramatic work in English, a pastoral masque based on Ovid's METAMORPHOSIS, with a libretto by John Gay and incorporating works of Dryden, Pope, and others. Written 1718 when Handel was resident composer at Cannons to the Duke of Chandos, ACIS AND GALATEA was partially published in 1722, first publicly performed in 1731, and put through various revisions, permutations and editions thereafter (including an arrangement by Mozart). It proved to be one of Handel's most popular dramatic works during his lifetime and has been steadily performed ever since. This late 18th-century edition is nos. 28-30 of Samuel Arnold's proposed complete works of Handel (he published 180 numbers), which did much to spread the composer's reputation abroad and to preserve works now lost in manuscript. It retains the two-act format that Handel adopted in 1739 (the work was originally written in three acts) with the added chorus at the end of Act I. A handsome, early setting of one of Handel's enduring triumphs. "... in inspiration, conception and execution it remains wholly individual." (Grove)

        SCHOOL BOY RECREATIONS

London: Published by Robert Sayer, 1788. A large printer's leaf, 460 by 340 mms., with border designs of schoolboys' recreations. The imprint reads "Published Nov. 1788, by Rob. Sayer, 33 Fleet Street, London." The heading reads "School Boys [Re]creatons"; the letters in square brackets being part of a repair to the leaf, which is laid down and mounted. The illustrations are, starting from the top and going clockwise, of schoolboys playing cricket; marbles; spinning hoops; spinning tops; kite-flying; archery; and badminton. In the centre is a manuscript prayer: "Father of Life and Light thou Good Supreme/ Teach me what is good, teach me Thyself./ Save me from Folly, Vanity and Vice/ From every bad Pursuit; if not, feed my Soul/ With Knowledge, conscious Peace and Virtue Pure/ Sacred: substantial never fading [?Bliss]." The text continues in a larger hand: "With early Virtue plant thy Breast/ The specious Arts of Vice detest," with "Breast" and "detest" in smaller hand. Finally, the manuscript portion concludes, "Learning/ From Art and Study true Content must flow/ For tis a God like attribute to know/ He must improve who Studies with Delight/ And learns sound Morals while he learns to write". [Signed] "Peter Bartlett/ December 1789". There are obvious tears in the engraving, which have been repaired and the leaf laid down. The images have been lightly water-coloured by hand, but both the images and the manuscript lines have faded. In the lower portion of the engraving, the parts to the left and right of the imprint have been covered by the border mount.

A View from the Bay of a part of Gibraltar, with the Spanish works on the Isthmus as erected against the place in the late Siege

London: William Faden, 1788. Aquatint. Image measures 14 x 24.5". This beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea shows the north side of the Rock of Gibraltar on the right. Published in 1788, the print depicts the area in the aftermath of the Siege of Gibraltar. Although the focal point of the print is ostensibly a puff of smoke arising from the land, the scene's most striking feature is its wide expanse of sky. Here, the technique of aquatint allows for the elegant rendering of subtle clouds above the sparkling sea. The Spanish mainland and a number of ships are visible in the far distance beyond the isthmus. Below the view, an inscription dedicates the print the Duke of Richmond. The print is in good condition with margins in tact. Slight mat burn at plate line and scattered foxing. William Faden (1750-1836) was an 18th century English cartographer and publisher. Faden is best known for his important publication of the North American Atlas, which covered a region of particular interest to him. This rare map provides great insight to a defining battle in American history.

THE WORKS OF THE LATE WILLIAM STARK, M. D. CONSISTING OF CLINICAL AND ANATOMICAL OBSERVATIONS WITH EXPERIMENTS, DIETETICAL AND STATICAL, REVISED AND PUBLISHED FROM HIS ORIGINAL MSS. BY JAMES CARMICHAEL SMYTH, M.D. PHYSICIAN EXTRAORDINARY TO HIS MAJESTY

London: For J. Johnson,. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1788. First Edition. Hardcover. Dietician; Diet; 18th Century; Experiments, Medical; Science; 4to 11" - 13" tall; xxxi, 190, [4], [2], [4] pages; Recent calf and marbled boards, raised bands, leather spine label, (i) iv, vii-xxxi and 190 (iv) pages including half-title, 3 folded engraved plates at rear with two leaves of explanations, 4 pages of publisher's titles at rear. Covers fine, text tight, minor aging and foxing, last few leaves with brief old stains, plates more heavily stained but still complete. Blake, page 431. Nicely restored copy of very scarce work, one of the first on dietary studies. Stark (1741? -1770) obtained his medical degree in 1769, and immediately undertook a series of self-subject dietary experiments. The first, just bread and water, lasted for 31 days; he retained that regimen while slowing adding other foods one at a time, including olive oil, milk, roast goose, boiled beef, fat, figs, and veal. A modern dietician would immediately recognize the inherent imbalance of this diet; Stark learned the hard way when he recorded that after two months his gums were red and swollen and prone to bleeding. Stark had given himself scurvy which led to his early death at age twenty-nine. .

Generalkarte von Nordamerika sant den Westindischen Inseln

Vienna: 1788. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, on four unjoined sheets, with full natural margins, in excellent condition. Sheet size of each 24 1/3 x 33 inches. A finely engraved monumental map of North America depicted shortly after the American Revolution, by a great Austrian cartographer. This is one of the largest depictions of North America made during the eighteenth-century. Schrämbl, who was by then one of Austria's most prominent cartographers, directly based this work on the map by Thomas Pownall. Pownall, a British MP, and formerly the governor of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, first produced this map in 1777. Schrämbl based his work on Pownall's 1783 second state, which showcases the former thirteen colonies as the newly independent United States of America. It was included as one of the principal maps of his grand work, the Allgemeiner Grosser Atlas. The immense scope of Schrämbl map's takes in all of the territory from James Bay, all the way down into the Spanish Main of South America. The map shows the newly independent American republic to be a small nation hugging the Atlantic seaboard, while the vast lands of the Ohio and Mississippi basins are shown to be largely uninhabited. The map covers all regions in great geographic detail. One of the most attractive features of the map is its pictorial representation of Native American villages, trading posts, mines and other features. Mexico, Central America, and the broad chain of the West Indian archipelago are also elegantly portrayed. The map features two fascinating cartographic insets; the first of which depicts Hudson's Bay and the Canadian Arctic; the latter supposedly containing the entrance to the purported Northwest Passage. The second inset features the head of the Sea of Cortes in the southwest, evincing Father Eusabio Kino's declaration that California is not an island, based on his exploration of the area from 1698 to 1701. This elegant compostion is further embellished by a large cartouche of rocaille ornamentation. Cf. Kohlmaier, Ursula, Der Verlag Franz Anton Schrämbl (Doctoral Dissertation, University of Vienna, 2001); McCorckle, New England in Early Printed Maps, 788.6
