Letters from Barbary, France, Spain, Portugal, etc. By an English Officer.

London: T. Cadell, 1788 - 2 volumes, octavo (208 x 126 mm). Contemporary tree calf, smooth spines ruled in gilt, red morocco labels, edges dyed yellow. With the errata slip tipped to vol. 1 p. 1 as issued. Bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst, Lancashire retail chemist and discriminating collector of 18th-century literature in contemporary bindings, to vol. 1 front pastedown. Spines slightly dry, front joint of vol. 1 cracked but sound, tips worn, marginal browning to pastedowns, free endpapers and blanks from adhesive used in the original binding, occasional foxing, vol. 1 sig. 2C8 untrimmed at upper outer corner, and folded over. A very good copy. First edition. Jardine (d. 1799), a Royal Artillery officer, was for much of his career stationed in Gibraltar, from where he conducted a mission to the sultan of Morocco, Muhammad III, in 1771; after the end of his active military career in 1776 he became a British agent in Spain. His Letters are "notable for [their] defence of sexual equality" (ODNB), which Jardine based on the profitable intermingling of the sexes which he observed on his travels: Jardine was a friend of William Godwin's and his book was read by Mary Wollstonecraft, who reviewed it favourably in the fourth volume of the Analytical in 1789 (O'Neill, The Burke-Wollstonecraft Debate, p. 116). It proved a demonstrable influence on her Vindication of the Rights of Women, which was published in 1792 (Chernock, Men and the Making of Modern British Feminism, p. 21) [Attributes: First Edition]

        Catechismo Nautico.

Stamperia Simoniana, 1788. In 8vo (mm 182x110); pp. XLIV, 281, (3). R. Salvemini, Introduzione, in: M.E. Scotti, "Catechismo nautico", Procida, 2001, pp. 3-8). Catalogo unico, IT\ICCU\CAME\000980 (2 sole copie censite a Napoli e Procida)..

Important Facts and Opinions relative to the King, faithfully Collected from the Examinations of the Royal Physicians and clearly arranged under general heads, [and]A Serious Address to the Queen, Prince of Wales, and the Public at Large, relative ti His Majesty's unhappy Situation,

      1) 4to, pp. 63 (1), (title-page dusty; small hole pp. 17 / 18, rust or food spot on p. 57) 2) 4to, pp. 24, (title slightly dusty) 1) Two variants exist, both rare; this one, without an imprint, according to ESTC, is held at BL, CU, NL of Ireland, Huntington & Texas Medical. The text, a precis of the government Report, with additional notes and a table, is sometimes attributed to William Rowley. The other variant is dated by ESTC to a year later, i.e. 1789. 2) One of 2 variants, this one, according to ESTC, held at Birmingham Central, BL, CU, NL of S, Harvard, Huntington, McMaster, Princeton & Yale. A fascinating glimpse into one of the more arresting concerns of the day, namely the sanity of the British Monarch, George III. Until recent times, every schoolboy was taught about King George's penchant for talking to the oak trees in Windsor Great Park, but the issue had far more profound constitutional and other implications. Different branches and factions of the medical profession were hence under extreme duress, and medicine became politicised in hitherto unfamiliar ways. At a safe distance in time, the subject was dramatised, to much acclaim, and made into the Oscar-winning film, "The Madness of King George", with a screenplay [1994] by Alan Bennett.

Thirty-eight Plates, with Explanations: intended to Illustrate Linnaeus's System of Vegetables,

London: For B. White and Son,, 1788. and particularly adapted to the Letters on the Elements of Botany. Octavo (214 x 131 mm). Contemporary green straight-grained morocco, title gilt to the spine, compartments formed by single gilt rule, single fillet gilt panel to the boards, dotted edge-roll, gilt edges, greek key roll to the turn-ins, marbled endpapers, blue silk page-marker intact. 38 hand-coloured engraved plates by F. P. Nodder. Spine sunned, some old dark marking to head of back cover. A very good copy with the terminal advertisement leaf. First edition. Thomas Martyn (1735-1825) followed his father as professor of botany at Cambridge. He was an "early adopter" of the Linnaean system and in 1763 gave a course of lectures on that subject. He also translated Rousseau's Letters on the Elements of Botany (1785); in fact, twenty-four of the thirty-two letters in that edition were the work of Martyn. In his "Advertisement" Martyn notes that "Some persons, who have honoured the Letters on the Elements of Botany with their approbation, having signified a wish that the subject might still be further illustrated by figures [i.e. plates], Mr. Nodder, an ingenious artist, has been employed for this purpose". The work of Frederick Polydore Nodder (fl. 1773-1800), described by ODNB as "finely eteched", here "actually underpinned the whole project to illustrate Linnaeus's system of vegetables" (ibid.). The publisher Benjamin White, "produced a wide range of titles, some of great beauty" (ibid.) and was younger brother of Gilbert White; his most famous publication being Gilbert's Natural History of Selborne (1789); the advertisement leaf (present here) puffs this: "In the Press, and speedily will be Published, handsomely printed on fine Paper...". A lovely copy of an important work in the propagation of the Linnaean taxonomy in Britain.

Palau, 74339. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Generalkarte von Nordamerika sant den Westindischen Inseln

Vienna 1788 - Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, on four unjoined sheets, with full natural margins, in excellent condition. Sheet size of each 24 1/3 x 33 inches. A finely engraved monumental map of North America depicted shortly after the American Revolution, by a great Austrian cartographer. This is one of the largest depictions of North America made during the eighteenth-century. Schrämbl, who was by then one of Austria's most prominent cartographers, directly based this work on the map by Thomas Pownall. Pownall, a British MP, and formerly the governor of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, first produced this map in 1777. Schrämbl based his work on Pownall's 1783 second state, which showcases the former thirteen colonies as the newly independent United States of America. It was included as one of the principal maps of his grand work, the Allgemeiner Grosser Atlas . The immense scope of Schrämbl map's takes in all of the territory from James Bay, all the way down into the Spanish Main of South America. The map shows the newly independent American republic to be a small nation hugging the Atlantic seaboard, while the vast lands of the Ohio and Mississippi basins are shown to be largely uninhabited. The map covers all regions in great geographic detail. One of the most attractive features of the map is its pictorial representation of Native American villages, trading posts, mines and other features. Mexico, Central America, and the broad chain of the West Indian archipelago are also elegantly portrayed. The map features two fascinating cartographic insets; the first of which depicts Hudson's Bay and the Canadian Arctic; the latter supposedly containing the entrance to the purported Northwest Passage. The second inset features the head of the Sea of Cortes in the southwest, evincing Father Eusabio Kino's declaration that California is not an island, based on his exploration of the area from 1698 to 1701. This elegant compostion is further embellished by a large cartouche of rocaille ornamentation. Cf.         The temporal government of the Pope's State.

London: J. Johnson. MDCCLXXXVIII 1788 - 8vo., xii + 268pp., wanting front free endpaper, contemporary calf, spine simply gilt and labelled. A very good copy. First edition: scarce. A comprehensive, damning, and seemingly reasonably objective survey of the civil administration and political economy of the Vatican State during the papacy of Pius VI (1775-1799). The book was dedicated by the author to Frederick Augustus Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol, eccentric absentee Bishop of Derry, and serial visitor to Italy (see, e.g. Ingamells p.126 et seq.]. The thirty chapters examine the inner workings of an influential but generally unpopular Papacy. Subjects examined, and objectively commented upon, include Papal finance, departments of state and the relevant officers and officials, including ministers, the governor of Rome, the Pope's auditor, the Cardinal Vicar, Rota, treasurer, the Sagra Consulta, the President of the public streets, the prefect of the Archives, the President of the Mint, of the Quays and of the Prisons, the Majordomo of the Pontifical Palace, of the Congregation del Buon Governo, &c. &c. There are other chapters on agriculture and 'bad air', manufactures, commerce, justice, and even nepotism. The name of Pope Pius VI is associated with many and often unpopular attempts to revive the splendour of Pope Leo X in the promotion of art and public works. He is best remembered in connection with the establishment of the Vatican Museum, and with an impractical and expensive attempt to drain the Pontine marshes, He has been accused of having led a futile and immoral life, of having neglected his duties and of having been bad tempered and even brutal with his attendants. Denham concludes his survey by observing that 'the peculiar infelicity of the papal government, so manifestly demonstrated in this work, will naturally prompt a curious enquirer to search for some principle in human nature to account for it'. And he concludes with damning clarity. 'However they may be supposed to promote the good of souls, their want of a proper relation, and their own particular insulated situation, never to be altered, depriving them of sympathy, must generally produce an insensibility to the misery of others. Whether this be a proper solution of the phenomenon or not, philosophers will judge. Facts evince, that priests so circumstanced, are by no means qualified to govern in temporal matters'.         uvres philosophiques de M. D. Hume. Traduites de l'anglois. Tome premier [- septième]. Nouvelle édition.

London: no printer, 1788 - 7 volumes bound in 5, octavo (160 x 98 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, triple rule gilt border to covers, spines elaborately decorated gilt, red and green morocco labels, edges stained yellow. Neat repair to head of spine of volume one, small chip at foot, very occasional light spotting, one leaf with short closed tear; a very attractive set. Titles printed in red and black, woodcut vignette chapter openings and endings. Third, enlarged edition of the second French collected works of Hume, first published in 1759-64; this is the most complete edition, which includes Hume's writings on economics. "The contents are differently ordered and vol. 7 . is an addition, containing seven of the Political Discourses of 1752 trans[lated] by Mlle. de la Chaux" in 1767 (Jessop). The other volumes contain the Treatise concerning Human Understanding (vol. I-II), Four Dissertations (vol. II), Dialogues concerning Natural Religion (vol. III), the essays on the passions, tragedy, and taste (vol. IV), Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals (vol. V), and Essays Moral and Political (vol. VI). The first collected edition in French was published in five volumes in 1758-60 (it was preceded by a German edition in four volumes in 1754-6; the first collected works in English, Hume's own edition, had appeared in 1753-6). Hume's works were quickly translated into French, reflecting the high regard in which he was held by a considerable number of French philosophes. Early enthusiasm more generally in France for Hume's writings had rested on his political and ethical thought (and later the History); the Political Discourses (1752) were acknowledged in the Bibliotèque raisonnée to be "greatly esteemed", and received two editions in French in 1754. But the irreligious tendency of his philosophical scepticism greatly affected Hume's reception in France, and even restricted scope for publication there. By 1761, all his works were included in the Index librorum prohibitorum. See Mossner, Life, p. 225ff. Chuo 29; Jessop, p. 11.

Barrois, 1788, 3 tomes in 12, de VII-170pp. 2ff. 130pp. 2ff. 170pp. 2ff. C'est la traduction du roman "the Recess, or a tale of other time " publié à Londres en 1783 et 1785. "The Recess can be regarded as a formative work of the original Gothic, echoing and pre-dating themes from other contemporary Gothic writers." ¶ M. Lévy p.178/196 - Cat.       88, [4 ad's] pages. Pastedown advertisement' for 'A New Publication... The Juvenile Magazine,' at end, from which the date of publication can be deduced. Illustrated with a wood-engraved frontispiece and 31 woodcuts within the text. Original patterned pink boards. 12mo. Spine restored; else a very good copy. The true first edition which has a longer text and four more woodcuts, was published circa 1781 and is known by a single copy in the Cotsen Children's Library. This above edition differs slightly from other known editions of approximately the same date; for whilst the frontispiece conforms to later printings, having fewer children in the reading circle and with the boy reading his text facing to the right, the woodcut on page 74 still shows Lady Worthy weeping, as in the first edition; whereas in later printings the illustration has been altered to show her reading from a book.
