        Carte de France

Artist: Dezauche/de l Isle JA / G; issued in: ; date: ca 1788 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Centerfold restored; - size (in cm): 49 x 61; - description: Map of total France; -vita of the artist: J. A. Dezauche was the successor to Guillaume De L'Isle and Philipe Buache. Guillaume De L isle (1626- 1757) Paris, was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. De L isle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ?Géographe de l?Académie? Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l?Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L isle?s ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV?s son, a task for which he received a salary. De L sle?s reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ?once authority was established, a geographer?s name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers? In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas.Like many cartographers of these days, De L isle did not travel with the explorers and elaborated the maps mostly in his office. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network that would provide him first-hand information. Given the family?s reputation and his own, De L isle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were coming back from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he was also aware of recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of his source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered, but no one else could validate it, so Delisle warned the viewer that its actual existence was in doubt. De L isle 's search for exactitude and intellectual honesty entangled him in a legal dispute in 1700 with Jean-Baptiste Nolin, a fellow cartographer. Noticing Nolin had used details that were considered original from his Map of the World, De L isle dragged Nolin in court to prove his plagiarism. In the end, Delisle managed to convince the jury of scientists that Nolin only knew the old methods of cartography and therefore that he had stolen the information from his manuscript. Nolin's maps were confiscated and he was forced to pay the court costs. The scientificity of the work produced by the De L isle family contrasted with the workshop of Sanson. While Sanson knowingly published outdated facts and mistakes, De L isle strived to present up-to-date knowledge. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Legatoria in pieno di pelle di pecora in marmo tempo bionda. Indietro con i nervi decorati.

"Perhaps the most beautiful mathematical treatise in existence." Horblit 61. "Lagrange proposed to reduce the theory of mecanics and the art of solving problems in that field to general formulas, the mere development of which would yield all the equations necessary for the solution of every problem (...) The [book] united and presented from a single point of view the various principles of mecanics, demonstrated their connection and mutal dependence, and made it possible to judge their validity and scope. It is divided into two parts, statics and dynamics, each of which treats solid bodies and fluid separately. There are no diagrams. The methods presented require only analytic operations subordinated to a regular and uniform development. Each of the four sections begins with a historical account which is a model of the kind." DSB, VII, 570. In-4. Collation : XII, 512 pp. Veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné, tranches rouges. (Reliure de l'époque.).

        Critik der practischen Vernunft.

Riga: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch,, 1788. Octavo (230 x 135 mm). Contemporary interim decorated paper wrappers printed in black and white, uncut edges. Woodcut device to title, woodcut headpiece. Printed in Gothic type. A couple of small ink marks to lower edge of title page. Wrappers slightly discoloured, some wear to spine ends with one exposed cord, lower edges of covers ueneven, endpapers shortened along fore edge, contents browned and lightly foxed, overall a very good, wide-margined copy. First edition of Kant's Critique of Practical Reason, the second of his critical works, in which he develops the concept of categorical imperative. This work established Kant's moral thinking as a cardinal reference in the successive development of ethics. "The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of 'pure reason'; and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame" (PMM).

The Federalist: a collection of essays written in favor of the new constitution

New York: John and Andrew M’Lean, 1788 - A spectacular association copy of The Federalist in original boards. Two volumes. Original boards, rebacked in paper, untrimmed. Title reinserted in volume one, light foxing, a few stains, minor repair to last leaf. An outstanding set. First edition of The Federalist, the most sought-after of all American books. An exceptional copy in the original boards, with the edges untrimmed. A splendid association copy from the library of Major Roger Alden. Alden enlisted as a soldier in Benedict Arnold’s expedition to Quebec in September 1776. He fought at Germantown in October 1777, and spent the winter at Valley Forge. He rose through the ranks, ultimately serving as aide-de camp, with the brevet rank of Major, to Brigadier General Jedediah Huntington. After the war Alden was elected deputy secretary of the Continental Congress, became deputy secretary of Foreign Affairs under Washington, and was the man entrusted with the original Constitution after its signing. “On September 18, 1787, the morning after it had been signed, the [Constitution] was placed on the 11:00 a.m. stagecoach for delivery to the Congress in New York City. There all the papers of the Convention were entrusted to Roger Alden, deputy secretary of the Congress” (Kammen, A Machine That Would Go of Itself: The Constitution in American Culture, p. 72). Two years later, Alden was again entrusted with the great state papers, this time including the Declaration of Independence. When the new government was formed in 1789, President Washington ordered Charles Thomson, secretary of the Continental Congress, “to deliver the Books, Records, and papers and the late Congress, the Great Seal to Mr. Roger Alden, the late Deputy Secretary of Congress; who is requested to take charge of them until farther directions shall be given.” Alden was keenly interested in the debates surrounding the new government, and he evidently treasured his copy of The Federalist, signing each volume on the cover and on the title. “Few issues in American history have engrossed public attention like the debate about whether to adopt the Constitution. Roger Alden joked to brother-in-law Samuel William Johnson [in a letter dated December 31, 1787] that ‘the report of the Convention affords a fruitful subject for wits, politicians and Law–makers-the presses, which conceived by the incubation of the Convention are delivered from the pangs of travail, & have become prolific indeed–the offspring is so numerous, that the public ear has become deaf to the cries of the distressed, and grow impatient for the christening of the first born’“ (Kramer, “Putting the Politics Back into the Political Safeguards of Federalism” in Columbia Law Review, January 2000, p. 251). In July 1789, the First Congress under the new Constitution created the Department of Foreign Affairs and directed that its Secretary should have “the custody and charge of all records, books, and papers” kept by the department of the same name under the old government. When Washington wrote to Thomas Jefferson in Paris on October 13, 1789, offering him the post of Secretary of State, he suggested Roger Alden to be his assistant: “Unwilling, as I am, to interfere in the direction of your choice of assistants, I shall only take the liberty of observing to you, that, from warm recommendations which I have received in behalf of Roger Alden, Esq., assistant Secretary to the late Congress, I have placed all the papers thereunto belonging, under his care. Those papers, which more properly appertain to the office of Foreign Affairs, are under the superintendence of Mr. Jay, who has been so obliging as to continue his good offices, and they are in the immediate charge of Mr. Remsen.” This extraordinary survival, worthy of the most discriminating collector, combines excellent original condition with an outstanding Founding era provenance. This is one of the most desirable examples of The Federalist remaining in private hands. Provenance: Roger Alden (175 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

With the errata slip tipped to vol. 1 p. 1 as issued. Bookplate of Robert J. A very good copy. First edition. Jardine (d. 1799), a Royal Artillery officer, was for much of his career stationed in Gibraltar, from where he conducted a mission to the sultan of Morocco, Muhammad III, in 1771; after the end of his active military career in 1776 he became a British agent in Spain. His Letters are "notable for [their] defence of sexual equality" (ODNB), which Jardine based on the profitable intermingling of the sexes which he observed on his travels: Jardine was a friend of William Godwin's and his book was read by Mary Wollstonecraft, who reviewed it favourably in the fourth volume of the Analytical in 1789 (O'Neill, The Burke-Wollstonecraft Debate, p. 116). It proved a demonstrable influence on her Vindication of the Rights of Women, which was published in 1792 (Chernock, Men and the Making of Modern British Feminism, p. 21)

Paris Chez l'Auteur n.d 1788 - Landscape folio (54 x 40 cm.), engraved title, engraved dedication, 24 engraved plates accompanied by engraved text, contemporary cartonnage binding, later manuscript label to upper cover, a little light foxing, a very good example. The plates are reductions of large plates engraved from drawings by Jesuit Attiret, on orders of the Emperor of China and the intervention of the East India Company. Cochin the French engraver was charged by M. de Marigny to oversea the work, and the plates were actually done by Aliamet, Choffard, Le Bas, Nee, Prevost and Saint-Aubin. With the errata slip tipped to vol. 1 p. 1 as issued. Bookplate of Robert J. 21) [Attributes: First Edition]

        Catechismo Nautico.

Stamperia Simoniana, 1788. In 8vo (mm 182x110); pp. XLIV, 281, (3). R. Salvemini, Introduzione, in: M.E. Scotti, "Catechismo nautico", Procida, 2001, pp. 3-8). Catalogo unico, IT\ICCU\CAME\000980 (2 sole copie censite a Napoli e Procida)..

The text, a precis of the government Report, with additional notes and a table, is sometimes attributed to William Rowley. The other variant is dated by ESTC to a year later, i.e. 1789. 2) One of 2 variants, this one, according to ESTC, held at Birmingham Central, BL, CU, NL of S, Harvard, Huntington, McMaster, Princeton & Yale. A fascinating glimpse into one of the more arresting concerns of the day, namely the sanity of the British Monarch, George III. Until recent times, every schoolboy was taught about King George's penchant for talking to the oak trees in Windsor Great Park, but the issue had far more profound constitutional and other implications. Different branches and factions of the medical profession were hence under extreme duress, and medicine became politicised in hitherto unfamiliar ways. At a safe distance in time, the subject was dramatised, to much acclaim, and made into the Oscar-winning film, "The Madness of King George", with a screenplay [1994] by Alan Bennett.

Thirty-eight Plates, with Explanations: intended to Illustrate Linnaeus's System of Vegetables,

London: For B. White and Son,, 1788. and particularly adapted to the Letters on the Elements of Botany. Octavo (214 x 131 mm). Contemporary green straight-grained morocco, title gilt to the spine, compartments formed by single gilt rule, single fillet gilt panel to the boards, dotted edge-roll, gilt edges, greek key roll to the turn-ins, marbled endpapers, blue silk page-marker intact. 38 hand-coloured engraved plates by F. P. Nodder. Spine sunned, some old dark marking to head of back cover. A very good copy with the terminal advertisement leaf. First edition. Thomas Martyn (1735-1825) followed his father as professor of botany at Cambridge. He was an "early adopter" of the Linnaean system and in 1763 gave a course of lectures on that subject. He also translated Rousseau's Letters on the Elements of Botany (1785); in fact, twenty-four of the thirty-two letters in that edition were the work of Martyn. In his "Advertisement" Martyn notes that "Some persons, who have honoured the Letters on the Elements of Botany with their approbation, having signified a wish that the subject might still be further illustrated by figures [i.e. plates], Mr. Nodder, an ingenious artist, has been employed for this purpose". The work of Frederick Polydore Nodder (fl. 1773-1800), described by ODNB as "finely eteched", here "actually underpinned the whole project to illustrate Linnaeus's system of vegetables" (ibid.). The publisher Benjamin White, "produced a wide range of titles, some of great beauty" (ibid.) and was younger brother of Gilbert White; his most famous publication being Gilbert's Natural History of Selborne (1789); the advertisement leaf (present here) puffs this: "In the Press, and speedily will be Published, handsomely printed on fine Paper...". A lovely copy of an important work in the propagation of the Linnaean taxonomy in Britain.

Palau, 74339. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
