Light foxing to text and maps -- less than is often found for this set. Vol. I engraved frontispiece portrait of Edward Gibbon by John Hall after Sir Joshua Reynolds. Volumes II through VI (are the true London Large Quarto First Edition, issued 1781 through1788. Volume I is the revised third issue, which, though issued but one year after the first issue of Volume I (in 1777), it is the first with Gibbon's final revisions, and preferred footnotes at the bottoms of the pages. Professor J. B. (John Bagnall) Bury notes in a 1909 edition the many changes Gibbon made in this "Third Edition" of volume I: "...for the sake not of correcting mis-statements of fact, but of improving the turn of the sentence or securing greater accuracy of expression." All indications point toward Gibbon himself considering the resulting text definitive -- no further such emendations were offered in the next (1781) reprinting. Further, one of his most important presentation copies to his benefactor of the complete set is recorded by Norton as, "A set made up of Vol. 1, Third Edition, volumes 2 through 6 First Editions, bound in red morocco, presented to Lord Sheffield by Gibbon, with an inscription in his hand-writing, sold at Sotheby's on June 26, 1933." Thus, this (mixed) issue constitutes the textural standard, reprinted for more than 200 years, without significant emendation. (Quoted and paraphrased from A Bibliography of the Works of Edward Gibbon by J.E. Norton, Oxford U. Press, 1940.). "For twenty-two years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly fifteen-hundred years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship, the keen criticisms of theological zeal, and the steady researches of (two) centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, pp. 146-147). "This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works. Whereas other eighteenth-century writers in this field such as Voltaire are still quoted with respect, the Decline and Fall is the only historical narrative prior to Macaulay which continues to be reprinted and actually read." PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN, P. 220 Gibbon (1737-1794) conceived of his plan for Decline and Fall while "musing amid the ruins of the Capitol" on a visit to Rome. For the next 10 years he worked away at his great history, which traces the decadence of the late empire from the time of the Antonines and the rise of Western Christianity. "The confusion of the times, and the scarcity of authentic memorials, pose equal difficulties to the historian, who attempts to preserve a clear and unbroken thread of narration," he writes. The first edition of Gibbon's work was printed over time, the first three volumes being printed between 1776 and 1781. The engraved portrait of Gibbon here in Vol. 1 was issued separately in 1780 -- presumably supplied to many early subscribers. In this set portrait is found as frontis illustration to Vol. 1, as usual for the set, with the large Eastern Roman Empire large folding map and the somewhat smaller Europe and Asia adjacent to Constantinople in Vol. 2 (as called for) and the Western Roman Empire folding map in Vol. 3 (as called for). The first issue of Vol. 1 appeared in 1776. An immediate commercial success, a second issue of a thousand copies, errors uncorrected, was printed released on June 3, 1776. "Gibbon wrote on March 29, 1777 , 'We are now printing a third edition in quarto of 1000 copies. Gibbon now agrees to take David Hume's advice and print the footnotes at the bottom of the pages. "The notes at the bottom take up much less space than I could have imagined," he wrote. A postscript was added to the preface with Gibbon declaring his intention to complete the additional volumes. Bears the bookplates of William Sotheby, member of an important English literary family. The 1777 - 1788 London Quarto Edition is recognized as a landmark of history and of literature in English. Only a handful of complete and collectible sets are offered worldwide. A lovely, restored set, the mixing of which constitutes the earliest authoritative edition of this monumental literary achievement.

St. Patrick's Day; or, the Scheming Lieutenant. A Comic Opera: as it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal, Smoke-Alley

[Dublin]: Printed for the Booksellers, 1788. First edition. 27, [1] pp. 8vo. Contemporary tree calf, flat spine divided into six compartments, one with red morocco spine label ("Plays"), the rest gilt with small crane tool. Extremities rubbed, joints cracked, small library label to front cover, faint pencil notes on title-pages identifying authors, note on flyleaf in 19th-century hand listing contents, bookplate. First edition. 27, [1] pp. 8vo. [in:] A Volume of Plays, as They are Acted at the Theatre-Royal, Smoke-Alley. Dublin. Containing The Young Quaker, The Castle of Andalusia, St Patrick's Day, The Mogul Tale, Belphegor; or, The Wishes, The Son in Law. [Dublin]: Printed for the Booksellers, 1788. The first edition, unauthorized, of Sheridan's St. Patrick's Day, bound with five other contemporary plays, each with its own title page and a general title ("A Volume of Plays"). The other plays include three by John O'Keeffe (The Young Quaker, The Castle of Andulsia, and The Son-in-Law), Elizabeth Inchbald's The Mogul Tale and Miles Peter Andrews' Belphegor. The Rothschild catalogue conjectures that the plays "were probably printed together with the intention of separating them for sale," though the presence of the general title in this copy argues that the plays were also to be sold together. The plays were certainly printed together, as the registration is continuous (for example, the first three leaves of St. Patrick's Day are unsigned E4-6). St. Patrick's Day was first performed at Covent Garden on 2 May 1775, but no authorized edition was printed in Sheridan's lifetime. Rare, with only one copy recorded sold at auction by ABPC (Sotheby's London, 1975); ESTC lists 14 copies of the individual play (T48537) and 3 copies of the volume of plays (N48781). At the time of his birth Mulhouse was a free German republic associated with the Swiss Confederation, but was annexed by France 10 years later. He died in that same town in 1839, from a tumor in his neck.Engelmann trained in Switzerland and France at La Rochelle and Bordeaux, and he studied painting and sketching in Jean-Baptiste Regnault?s atelier in Paris. In the summer of 1814 he travelled to Munich, Germany to study lithography, a German invention. The following spring, he founded La Société Lithotypique de Mulhouse. In June 1816 he opened a workshop in Paris.Engelmann is largely credited with bringing lithography to France and later, commercializing chromolithography. In 1837 he was granted an English patent for a process of chromolithography that provided consistently high-quality results.Throughout his life, he produced large numbers of prints, including numerous plates for Baron Isidore Justin Séverin Taylor's celebrated collection of lithographs, «Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l?ancienne France».Engelmann's Paris printing company, -Engelmann et Graf- was passed on to his son, Godefroy Engelmann II (born 1819), who carried on his father's work with the same high artistic quality until his own death in 1897.

        Picturesque Antiquities of Scotland [I–II]

London: Printed for the Author, and sold by Edwards also by Edwards's, in Halifax. 1788. - Two parts, 4to., pp. iv, 27, [1] [25 leaves]; 11, [1], [25 leaves], the unnumbered leaves prints on rectos only, with an etched illustration at the head (all signed by Cardonnel) and a letterpress description below; a fine copy, with the etchings printed in sepia, in contemporary red morocco by Edwards of Halifax, covers gilt with a border of wheels and floral sprays, spine gilt in compartments and lettered direct.First edition, the very rare issue with the plates in sepia, printed directly onto thick wove paper.Picturesque Antiquities is the chief work of the Scottish doctor turned antiquarian Adam Cardonnel, who assisted Francis Grose with his studies on Scotland in 1788-91 (Burns wrote to Grose care of Cardonnel in 1789). Cardonnel provided both the delightful illustrations and the text here, his work having one foot in the Picturesque movement and one in the revival of interest in the Gothic. Shortly afterward, in 1791, he left Scotland, having succeeded to estates in Northumberland, and took the name Adam Mansfeldt de Cardonnel-Lawson.The work went through several forms. This, the first, is found more commonly with the illustrations on india paper, pasted above the letterpress text; we can find no record of a sepia printing, nor of a quarto issue with the engravings printed directly on the paper. An octavo issue followed, and then a reprint of the quarto with a new introduction, still dated '1788' but probably printed to coincide with the publication of two further parts in 1793.See G. E. (Godechot, La contre révolution p. 12).Précieux exemplaire, offert par d'Antraigues à Louis Gaspard de Salles, Marquis de Gudans, doyen de la noblesse de Toulouse, surnommé le "Roi des Pyrénées" en raison de sa grande fortune comme maître de forges de l'Ariège.

Artist: Dezauche/de l Isle JA / G; issued in: ; date: ca 1788 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Centerfold restored; - size (in cm): 49 x 61; - description: Map of total France; -vita of the artist: J. A. Dezauche was the successor to Guillaume De L'Isle and Philipe Buache. Guillaume De L isle (1626- 1757) Paris, was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. De L isle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ?Géographe de l?Académie? Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l?Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L isle?s ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV?s son, a task for which he received a salary. De L sle?s reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ?once authority was established, a geographer?s name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers? In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas.Like many cartographers of these days, De L isle did not travel with the explorers and elaborated the maps mostly in his office. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network that would provide him first-hand information. Given the family?s reputation and his own, De L isle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were coming back from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he was also aware of recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of his source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered, but no one else could validate it, so Delisle warned the viewer that its actual existence was in doubt. De L isle 's search for exactitude and intellectual honesty entangled him in a legal dispute in 1700 with Jean-Baptiste Nolin, a fellow cartographer. Noticing Nolin had used details that were considered original from his Map of the World, De L isle dragged Nolin in court to prove his plagiarism. In the end, Delisle managed to convince the jury of scientists that Nolin only knew the old methods of cartography and therefore that he had stolen the information from his manuscript. Nolin's maps were confiscated and he was forced to pay the court costs. The scientificity of the work produced by the De L isle family contrasted with the workshop of Sanson. While Sanson knowingly published outdated facts and mistakes, De L isle strived to present up-to-date knowledge. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

"Perhaps the most beautiful mathematical treatise in existence." Horblit 61. "Lagrange proposed to reduce the theory of mecanics and the art of solving problems in that field to general formulas, the mere development of which would yield all the equations necessary for the solution of every problem (...) The [book] united and presented from a single point of view the various principles of mecanics, demonstrated their connection and mutal dependence, and made it possible to judge their validity and scope. It is divided into two parts, statics and dynamics, each of which treats solid bodies and fluid separately. There are no diagrams. The methods presented require only analytic operations subordinated to a regular and uniform development. Each of the four sections begins with a historical account which is a model of the kind." DSB, VII, 570. In-4. Collation : XII, 512 pp. Veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné, tranches rouges. (Reliure de l'époque.).

Woodcut device to title, woodcut headpiece. Printed in Gothic type. A couple of small ink marks to lower edge of title page. First edition of Kant's Critique of Practical Reason, the second of his critical works, in which he develops the concept of categorical imperative. This work established Kant's moral thinking as a cardinal reference in the successive development of ethics. "The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of 'pure reason'; and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame" (PMM).

His Letters are "notable for [their] defence of sexual equality" (ODNB), which Jardine based on the profitable intermingling of the sexes which he observed on his travels: Jardine was a friend of William Godwin's and his book was read by Mary Wollstonecraft, who reviewed it favourably in the fourth volume of the Analytical in 1789 (O'Neill, The Burke-Wollstonecraft Debate, p. 116). It proved a demonstrable influence on her Vindication of the Rights of Women, which was published in 1792 (Chernock, Men and the Making of Modern British Feminism, p. 21)
