Rigaku nyushiki ensei kansho zusetsu.Nagoya, Kansho juku, Bunsei 6 [= 1823]. 3 vols. With 10 astronomical illustrations (mostly double- or 1½-page (including a terrestrial map in 2 hemispheres) and 2 dials with rotating parts (all in vol. 1), 10 seals integral to the text woodblocks and a red (owner's?) seal at the end of vol. 1. Original grey paper wrappers in traditional Japanese style (25 x 17 cm).

First edition of a rare and well-illustrated introduction to Western science (mostly astronomy) by Yoshio Nanko (1787-1843). Nanko was "of pivotal importance ... to the spread of Western learning" and the present book was "his most influential publication" (Goodman). All the illustrations appear in volume 1, including the geocentric universe according to Ptolemy and according to Tycho Brahe; Copenicus's heliocentric universe (including comets); sun spots; the sun, earth and six planets depicted at the same scale; the earth orbiting the sun to show its axis at the solstices and equinoxes; solar and lunar eclipses; and a world map in two hemispheres. There are two astronomical dials: a simple rotating dial on one page and triple dial in a paper pocket on another. Volume 2 discusses the sun, moon, earth and planetary system. Volume 3 discusses the individual planets, the stars, constellations and comets. The appendix on the motion of the earth discusses Newton's discoveries in relation to traditional Chinese views. With an occasional manuscript annotation in ink, both Dutch and Japanese. Lacking 1 leaf (pp. 13-14 of vol. 2), but otherwise in good condition, with only a few minor and mostly marginal worm holes and a few pages with faint water stains. The label on the front wrapper of volume 1 is tattered, and a couple threads are broken, but the wrappers are also still in good condition. An important example of the beginnings of Japanese interest in European astronomy and an indication of the state of Japanese-Dutch relations on the eve of Siebold's arrival in Japan.

The Life of the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Swift, Dean of St.Patrick's, Dublin. [With an Appendix: Anecdotes of the Family of Swift. A Fragment, written by Dr. Swift].

London, Printed for J.F. and C. Rivington, and others, 1787. - The Second Edition. 14.5 cm x 21,5 cm. Pagination: Portraitfrontispiece of Thomas Sheridan, III, (2), Portrait - Engraving of Jonathan Swift, (14), 488 pages. Hardcover. Original 18th century calf with richly gilted ornamenting on spine and boards and with the original spinelabel intact. The hinges a little weak but holding. All edges gilt with original, beautifully marbled endpapers well preserved. Interior wonderfully preserved and clean. Two previous, contemporary ownernames in ink (J.Turner, 1806 and M.Peele, 1787). Very good overall condition with only minor signs of external wear. This seems to be a large paper edition. Extremely rare ! Thomas Sheridan (1687 – 10 October 1738) was an Anglican divine, essayist, playwright, poet, schoolmaster and translator. He is chiefly remembered for his friendship with Jonathan Swift. He was born in Cavan, Ireland, the son of James Sheridan, and grandson of the Reverend Dennis Sheridan. Two of his uncles were William Sheridan, Bishop of Kilmore and Ardagh and Patrick Sheridan, Bishop of Cloyne. After graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, he married Elizabeth MacFadden and the couple first lived in Dublin in King James's Mint. He inherited from his father-in-law a substantial property at Quilca in County Cavan. He ran a school in Capel Street, Dublin in the 1720s whose pupils included children of many prominent families such as Anthony Foster, the future Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer. He was father of Thomas Sheridan, a celebrated actor and elocutionist who was the father of Richard Brinsley Sheridan; he had two other sons and one daughter. In 1725 he was appointed a royal chaplain, but preached a sermon which was considered by some to be politically suspect, and his appointment was cancelled. In compensation he was given a living at Drumlane in Cavan and in 1735 became headmaster of the Cavan Royal School where he remained for three years. Other appointments he is reputed to have applied for were the position of Dean of Kilmore and the position of headmaster of the Royal School in Armagh, but neither were successful. He was friends with Jonathan Swift, and had a room permanently reserved for him in the Deanery; he was his principal collaborator and wrote his biography. Swift often stayed at Sheridan's country house and wrote part of Gulliver's Travels there. On the much debated question of whether Swift was secretly married to Esther Johnson ("Stella") Sheridan was a strong if not conclusive witness that the marriage did take place; according to friends his source was Stella herself. Like so many of Swift's friends, he was ultimately fated to quarrel with him irrevocably: apart from Swift's increasing eccentricity, perhaps insanity, the cause of the quarrel is obscure. Sheridan collapsed and died suddenly while having dinner at a friend's house in Rathfarnham, County Dublin. Swift before their final quarrel called him the best scholar in Ireland; Sir Walter Scott in his Life of Swift calls him "good- natured and light- hearted." (Wikipedia)

Prijs: ? 3.450,- (incl. lijst).

[6], 186, [2], 32, [2] pp. 12mo. Cowper, the "pensive poet" was greatly appreciated by the people of America. The Calvinistic moral tone combined with the realism and "old-fashion" ideas, as well as the poem's quotability, made it very popular. While the literary critics were not so quick to appreciate "The Task" the American reading public's response was similar to that of Franklin. In a letter to Cowper he writes that "the relish for the reading of poetry had long since left me, but there is something so new in the manner, so easy and yet so correct in the language, so clear in the expression, yet concise, and so just in the sentences, that I have read the whole with great pleasure, and some of the pieces more than once." Bristol B6474; Colby Library Quarterly p. 235; Lilly "Grolier 100 Books Famous in English Literature " 60 which cites the Philadelphia 1787 edition as the first American.         Bijltjesdag Amsterdam, 1778.

Prijs: ? 1.650,- (incl. lijst).

POEMS, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect

1787. [original boards, leaves uncut] The Third Edition. London: Printed for A. Strahan; T. Cadell in The Strand; and W. Creech, Edinburgh, 1787. Original blue-grey paper-covered boards with cream paper spine and printed label, page edges uncut. "The London edition," which is to say the third edition overall (so stated, unlike the prior two) -- following the rare Kilmarnock edition of 1786 and Wm. Creech's Edinburgh edition of earlier in 1787. Egerer goes to great length to explain why this edition, though promoted as coming out in mid-1787, did not in fact meet the public until November of that year (later than pirated editions in Belfast and in Dublin) -- it had a lot to do with Creech still having many copies on hand from his Edinburgh edition.~This is a remarkably fine copy, still in the original boards and label, and with the leaves uncut as issued; the spine remains atypically intact, including the printed label. The only real flaw is that the endpapers are cracked (also, leaf O3 has a two-inch tear). One could not hope for a copy in better condition. Egerer 6.

Prijs: ? 3.450,- (incl. lijst).
