A New Map of Derby Shire

28 1/2" x 20 1/4". original outline hand colouringA scarce reduction of Peter Perez Burdett's one inch to the mile survey of the county published in 1767 - noted by Dickinson as 'probably the most historically valuable map of Derbyshire ever issued' ( The Mapping of Derbyshire by James Dickinson 2007 ). A pencil note verso suggests a publication date of 1789 - the map shows the line of the Cromford Canal, opened 1792/3, which does not appear on Burdett's large scale map until its re-publication by George Snowden in 1791. Close cut with several inconspicuous marginal tears.

Visiting cards became an indispensable tool of etiquette, with sophisticated rules governing their use. The essential convention was that one person would not expect to see another person in his own home (unless invited or introduced) without first leaving his visiting card for the person at his home. Upon leaving the card, he would not expect to be admitted at first, but might receive a card at his own home in response. This would serve as a signal that a personal visit and meeting at home would be welcome. On the other hand, if no card was forthcoming, or if a card was sent in an envelope, a personal visit was thereby discouraged. -- This album contains cards of (Karl Anselm) von Thurn und Taxis (1733-1805); Principe di Marsiconuovo; (Giovanni) Marchese de Serpos; (Miguel de Torres Ruiz) Marquis de Matallan (1737-1817); (Erbeto) Mirelli of Malta; (John) Irwin (1728-1788); his wife (Caroline) Irwin (*1750); Capitano di Marina Agostino del Bene; Giuseppe Gualengo; Monsieur de Campos; Le President du Roi de Sardaigne; Le Ministre Plenipotentaire de sa Majeste Tres-Fidele; l\'Abbé de la Feuillie; Marchese della Giummarella; General Comte d\'Alet; Marquis Manara (Ministre); Le Comte F. de Cattaneo (Consul General); Cavalieri Rombenchi Incaricato de Reali affari di Napoli; Mr. de Fillie - Consul General de Russie; Giuseppe Firrao (Cardinal, 1736-1830); Filippo Armano; Prince (Peter) Obulensky (1743-1822) of Russia; Francesco Aglietti (1757-1836); Abbe Comte de Montalban; Franco di Montalban; (Pierre Paul de Meredieu) Baron de Naillac (1737-c1813); Constantin Zacco; Bardaxi Secretaire di Legazione di Spagne; (Leonardo) de Miniscalchi - Chevalier de Malta; Minister of Poland; Ministre plénipotentiaire of Russia; Ambassador of Spain; Aurelio Dadini; Pietro Paolo Donati; Chevalier (William?) Stapleton; Consul of Spain; Lady Sophia Butler (daughter of the late Earl of Lansborough); Princess (Maria Esterhazy de Galanta) Grassalkovich (1739-1820); Giovanni Cattaneo / Glogow; Monsieur Lopez de Ulloa; Ambassadeur de France; (Maria Josepha ) von Khevenhüller (1742-1814) (married to Karl Borromaeus Breuner v. Enkevoirt); Comte de Clam-Gallas; Marquesse Agdallo - Eletore di Sassonia (wife of Aloys Peter don Agdallo); Chevalier de las Casas; Luigi Braschi-Onesti - Duca di Nemi (1745-1816) - (nephew of Pope Pius VI); Stachieff (Russia); Giacomo Sceriman; Monsieur de Wind - Chambellan de sa Majesté le Roi de Denmark; Mr. Massenet; Mr. Schluter; (Theodor) von Salzmann - Minister von Brandenburg, Ansbach und Bayreuth; Comte de Montezan; Baron de Weichs (Clemens August von Weichs?); Monsieur le Comte de Tattenbach Grand Marechal; Graf von Tattenbach; Lambertenghi etc. -- as also ministers, consuls, secretaires etc. of Sicily, Spain, Naples, Russia, Poland, etc. -- 13 of the cards are signed in the plate by the painter/engraver; 14 of the cards are blind embossed cards (all other cards are copper-engravings), some are printed in color. -- A few cards have the handwritten date \"Turin 1786\" on it, the place and date when they were given to the former owner. -- Certainly one of the largest collections of visiting cards from the 18th century. -- Extremely rare.         Mémoires d'Anne de Gonzagues Princesse Palatine.

s.n, 1786. Cm. 19,5, pp. (4) xv (1) 267 (1). Solida legatura coeva in piena pelle, dorso a nervi con titoli e ricchi fregi in oro. Tagli colorati e sguardie marmorizzate.

Acts and Laws of the State of Connecticut, In America.

1786. With Extensive Manuscript Additions Concerning Toll Bridges, Taxation and Veterans [Connecticut]. Acts and Laws of the State of Connecticut, In America. Hartford: Printed by Elisha Babcock, 1786. 8, 2, 5, 3, 346, [8] pp. [Bound with] [Manuscript Copies of Subsequent Acts, Laws and Resolutions, 1786-1817]. 347-387, [388-390] pp. Octavo (9" x 5-3/4"). Contemporary sheep, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Rubbing to boards and extremities with wear to spine ends and corners, rear board partially detached, front board and both free endpapers detached and edgeworn, front free endpaper has early repair. Moderate toning and dampspotting to text, faint dampstaining in a few places, minor edgewear to title page. Early owner inscription, "John Benjamin's Law Book, 1786/ 1785" to head of front free endpaper, "1784" in small later hand to head of title page, early owner annotations to a few leaves of text, a few other jottings to rear pastedown. * This fascinating collection addresses a variety of topics, such as adultery, bail, burglary, cattle, children, counterfeiting, debtors, divorce, dogs, dowry, dueling, drunkenness, elections, executions, fornication, frauds and perjuries, fraudulent conveyances, gaming, horse racing, Indians, insolvent estates, jurors, lotteries, marriage, maritime affairs, murder, oaths, rape, rogues, rum, the Sabbath, slaves, taverns, tobacco, treason, usury and vice. The owner of this copy had his copy bound with 50 blank leaves. He filled most of these with fair copies of several later acts, laws and resolutions. The majority of these deal with toll bridges, the second largest group deal with Revolutionary War veterans. It is likely that the owner of this book was John Benjamin of Stratford, Connecticut, who was involved in several bridge-building ventures in Bridgeport. He was also a veteran.         Catechismus Romanus: ex decreto Concilii Tridentini iussu S. Pii V editus. [Rome], Propaganda Fide, 1786 [= 1787]-1787.

1786. 2 volumes. 8vo. The pages progress from right to left like a normal Arabic book. With an Arabic title-page on the second page of each volume, each with the Propaganda Fide's woodcut Jesus and apostles device and each preceded (on the back of the same leaf) by a Latin half-title. Further with woodcut tail-pieces, 1 woodcut decorated initial, and tailpieces and factotums built up from cast fleurons. Set in 2 sizes of nashk Arabic type, with the 13-page dedication to Pope Pius VI and a few other preliminary pages also in Latin on the facing pages, set in roman and italic type. [40], "976" [= 980]; [8], "855" [= 847], [1 blank] pp. Early 19th-century half sheepskin parchment, sewn on recessed cords with a hollow back, hand-lettered spine titles, shell-marbled sides, brown sprinkled edges. First unabridged Arabic edition of the catechism translated from the Latin version authorized by the Council of Trent and the most extensive Arabic catechism ever published, comprising 1827 pages plus preliminaries. It follows the Roman Catholic rite and was printed and published by the Propaganda Fide in Rome. It is based on the Latin text authorized by the Council of Trent under Pope Pius V, first published in Latin in 1566. While some small Arabic catechisms of a few dozen pages had been printed as early as 1580, only a few more extensive ones had appeared, with Bellarmino's growing from 86 pages (not including the parallel Latin text) in 1613 to 411 pages in 1770 and De Beauvais and Richelieu's 1640 Paris edition comprising 415 pages. The present edition is probably the most extensive Arabic work that the Propaganda Fide ever published. Volume 1 is dated 1786 on the Latin half-title and it may have been issued without the dedication (quires *-2*) in that year, but the dedication is dated 22 December 1787 and volume 2 is dated 1787 on the half-title. The Vatican established the Propaganda Fide in 1622 to promote Catholic missionary work, especially in the Middle and Near East, and it set up its own printing office in Rome in 1626. The printing office acquired many types for exotic languages from various earlier Roman printing offices that had operated under the authority of or in close cooperation with the Vatican and also had many new types cut for them, mostly by their own in-house punchcutters. In this way they assembled what was probably the largest collection of exotic printing types in the world, most of them exclusive to their press. The press had declined in the 18th-century, but began to flourish again when the future cardinal Sefano Borgia took chage of the Propaganda Fide and Giovanni Cristoforo Amaduzzi of the press in 1770. The type used for the main text of the present catechism was cut for the Propaganda Fide, probably in-house, and first used for Tommaso Obizzino, Thesaurus Arabico-Syro-Latina, 1636. With a nineteenth-century library stamp, apparently from the Propaganda Fide's own college, in the unprinted areas on both Arabic title-pages (only partly legible, but apparently reading "Pont. Univ. de Propaganda Fide"). With occasional minor and mostly marginal foxing and an occasional quire slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition, with only an occasional tiny hole or small marginal chip. Only slightly trimmed, preserving an occasional deckle. The most ambitious Arabic catechism produced to this date. Schnurrer 308; WorldCat (2 copies); not in Smitskamp, Philologia orientalis.

Observations made on a tour from Bengal to Persia in the years 1786-7. With a short account of the remains of the celebrated palace of Persepolis; and other interesting events. London, T. Cadell, 1790.

1786. 8vo. VIII, 351, (1) pp. Handsome period style brown gilt tooled half calf with marbled boards and red gilt morocco label. Period ink inscription on the first page of the Preface: "G. Matcham". With an autograph letter signed from Colonel Francklin to Major Moor, dated 1835, attached to the front endpaper. 4to. 2 pp. Brown ink on laid paper. Second edition, with an autograph letter signed by the author. While the writing is not particularly clear, the letter is in very good condition. Most likely from the library of English explorer and Officer of East India Company George Matcham (1753-1833). Being William Francklin's older contemporary, Matcham served in the Company in 1771-85 and extensively travelled across the Near East and the Red Sea on the way from India to England and back (cf. ODNB). William Francklin (1763-1839) was an Officer of the East India Company and a prominent orientalist; member, and in later years, librarian of the council, of the Royal Asiatic Society. He was also a member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. "A distinguished officer, Francklin also enjoyed considerable reputation as an oriental scholar. In 1786 he made a tour of Persia, in the course of which he lived at Shiraz for eight months as the close friend of a Persian family, and was thus able to write a fuller account of Persian customs than had before appeared. This was published as 'Observations Made on a Tour from Bengal to Persia' (Calcutta, 1788) and was translated into French in 1797" (ODNB). Francklin's account was also published in German the same year as our English edition. The first edition was published in Calcutta in 1788. "An important book in the growing interest of 'Orientalism.' There are numerous references to Hafez. (Francklin's book was read by Byron, among others). The book is also important because of the retelling of comments the author had heard about Karim Khan Zand. The author states eye-witnesses had told him Karim Rhan always rode at the head of his troops; his soldiers liked him; there was nothing great in him but he was considered a just man even though during the last year of his reign he committed some cruel acts. We are also informed that Karim Khan was a 'debaucher.' The author saw a full cycle of Ta'zie during his stay in Shiraz" (Ghani). "Describes Cochin, Tellicherry, Anjengo, Goa, Bombay etc." (Kaul Travels 858). - A very good, handsome copy. Howgego I, E8. Ghani 138. Cox I, 257. Henze II, 165.
