Berlin, bei Friedrich Vieweg 1786 - VIII, 758, (2) Seiten. Frakturdruck. - ADB I, 772ff. Gutes Exemplar, sehr selten. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1001 8° (21 x 12,5 cm).

Lapérouse sailed all the way south to the Spanish Las Californias in 1786. He stopped at the Presidio of San Francisco long enough to create an outline map of the Bay Area, Plan du Port du St. Francois, which was reproduced as Map 33 in L. Aubert's 1797 Atlas du Voyage de la Perouse. Laterhe arrived in Monterey Bay and at the Presidio of Monterey. In 1787 after a visit to Manila, he set out for the northeast Asian coasts. He saw the island of Quelpart, present-day Cheju in South Korea, which had been visited by Europeans only once before when a group of Dutchmen shipwrecked there in 1635. Harvard’s 1786 Graduating Class and Their Theses, Dedicated to Gov. James Bowdoin

Boston, Massachusetts 1786 - Broadside. List of Graduating Students and Theses for Disputation. Boston, Massachusetts: Edmund Freeman, 1786. 1 p., 16 x 24 in. Interesting broadside in Latin issued for Harvard University's 1786 commencement lists Latinized names of 45 graduating students. Among the graduates are Joseph Warren (1768-1790), the son of prominent Boston physician and Harvard graduate Joseph Warren, who was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775; Boston attorney Timothy Bigelow (1767-1821); U.S. Senator Christopher G. Champlin (1768-1840); Boston attorney John Lowell Jr. (1769-1840), whose grandson served as president of Harvard in the early twentieth century; U.S. Senator Thomas W. Thompson (1766-1821); and Massachusetts Chief Justice Isaac Parker (1768-1830). Historical BackgroundThe Theses broadsides display propositions, used in the Commencement tradition of public student disputation which began at Harvard College in 1642. The practice was instituted under the leadership of President Henry Dunster (president from 1640-1654) within a larger effort to model the college after European universities.Behind the printed broadsides was a multi-stage process that involved both students and faculty. The Latin theses were academic statements created by the graduating students to reflect the scope of their undergraduate study. The Theses fit within a curriculum that emphasized public discourse and syllogistic debate and ranged between approximately 50 and 250 propositions in most years. This broadside includes theses in technology, grammar, rhetoric, logic, metaphysics, ethics, theology, politics, mathematics, and physics.Printed at the expense of the graduating class, the Theses were posted in advance, and graduates were expected to be able to defend them upon request on Commencement Day. Certain students were selected by the faculty to discuss and dispute specific Theses publicly as part of the day's exercises.Beginning with the first Commencement in 1642 through 1810, Theses were printed as broadsides. They were supplemented from 1791 onward by the Order of Exercises for Commencement, printed in English. The last Order of Exercises was printed in 1810, and subsequent Theses were distributed as quartos until they were replaced in 1821 by a Commencement program. Generally, the ceremony for students receiving their Bachelor's degrees occurred in the morning and was followed by the Master's degree ceremony in the afternoon.James Bowdoin (1726-1790) was born in Boston and graduated from Harvard College in 1745. He was active in scientific pursuits and collaborated with Benjamin Franklin on experiments. Bowdoin served as the first president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Bowdoin College is named in his honor. Elected to the Massachusetts provincial assembly in 1753, he served there until appointed to the Governor's Council in 1756. He became a critic of the royal governors and supported the patriot cause. Although ill at the beginning of the Revolutionary War, Bowdoin was elected president of the executive council of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress, a position he held until 1777. He served as president of the 1779 Massachusetts Constitutional Convention. After Governor John Hancock resigned as Massachusetts governor in 1785, the ensuing election gave no candidate a majority, and the General Court chose Bowdoin as the second governor of Massachusetts, a position he held from 1785 to 1787. His attempts as governor to collect taxes led to Shays' Rebellion in 1786, and made Bowdoin unpopular. He lost his reelection bid in 1787 to John Hancock.Thomas Cushing (1725-1788) was born in Boston and graduated from Harvard College in 1744. He studied law and was admitted to the bar but also ran his family's merchant business. He was a close political ally of John Hancock. An early opponent of British taxes imposed to pay for the posting of troops in the colonies, Cushing became speaker of the Massach. (See website for full description)

        Shay's Rebellion

September 13, 1786. An early report of the opening action of Shay's Rebellion as reported in the Wednesday, September 13, 1786 edition of The Connecticut Journal (New Haven: Printed by Thomas and Samuel Green, opposite the Post-Office) 4 pages, 10" x 16". Minor marginal tears and chips, light folds. The Journal opens with news from abroad including a report on the latest parachute jump from a hot-air balloon in Brussels by Jean-Pierre Blanchard. However, the right-hand column of page two notes the opening salvo of Shay's rebellion when Luke Day and a band of 100 men closed the courthouse at Northampton, Massachusetts:"NORTHAMPTON, September 6. Last week on Tuesday, being the day for holding the Courts of Common Pleas and General Sessions of the Peace in this town, --- early in the morning, abut one hundred men from West-Springfield, with white staffs (the insignia of Mobs) embodied themselves near the Court House, commanded by Capt. Luke Day, whose private character and circumstances, as well as his personal liberty, made it very convenient that there should be an immediate redress of public grievances. -- In the course of the forenoon they were joined by a number from various other towns in this county, and at one o'clock by a body of horse and foot from Amherst, Pelham, &c. under the command of Capt. Hinds and Lieut. Billings, forty of whom brought their arms, making in the whole bar 400[.] The friers to government wished to lend their aid to support the Court, and impatiently waited for orders from the proper officer. What would have been their numbers, or what the consequences of a forcible attack, is uncertain but instead of calling upon the militia of this, as the neighbouring towns, the day was spent in frequent and idle conferences, and those people who had heretofore signalized themselves upon such occasions, had the mortification to find that the Court had complied with all the wishes of the insurgents and adjourned without delay, without the least attempt to do their duty … We hear from Boston, that his Excellency the Governor has issued a Proclamation, requiring the Sheriffs, Constables, &c. of this country, immediately to exert themselves in apprehending the leaders of the late Insurgents, who assembled in this town to prevent the sitting of the Courts of Justice. WORCESTER, Sept. 6 Early on Tuesday morning last, this town was visited by a body of Men under arms from several towns in the North-west part of the county, who surrounded and took possession of the Court-house, in order to stop the sitting of the Court of Common Pleas … About 12 o'clock the Judges of the Court proceded [sic] by the High Sheriff proceeded to the Court-house, but were stopped at the door by the points of bayonets … in consequence of which they soon after assembled at the United States arms and there opened the Court in due form … " The writers at the Journal were dismissive of the rioters and their motives adding: "It is a truth, that he promoters and ringleaders of the riots which have for sometime past disturbed the country, are composed of disgraced officers of our late army, and creatures who were need opposed to our present government. -- With the cry of grievances, and pretended danger, they have alarmed and led from the duty they ow the Commonwealth, numbers of hones, undesigning men, who, it is not doubled, on a moment's calm reflection, will discover the wicked designs of these real foes to their happiness, and will treat them and their measures with becoming detestation."

The Columbian Magazine, or Monthly Miscellany, Containing a View of the History, Manners, Literature, Characters of the Year 1787. Emollit Mores. [Bound volume I, including early appearance of the Constitution in the September 1787 issue]

Philadelphia: T. Seddon, W. Spotswood, C. Cist, & J. Trenchard, 1786-87. [4], 884p. plus index, all issues of Volume I, together with preface and foreword from the publisher. A fat small octavo, 8x5 inches in calf-backed papered boards with original red leather label gilt (legible), label ruled gilt, spine ruled with notional transverse lines. Texts appear complete although cover-wraps were discarded by binder; some illustrations (per monthly tables of contents and various stubs) are lacking; we list below those which are present. Textblock is intact without sophistication but casebinding is in poor shape: front cover is nearly detached, boards are peeled of much of their original coated papering and now show large areas of soft grey card; all extremities are heavily worn, rear board "hinged" solely by calf overlay, initial blanks are missing, and-- a most obvious flaw --much of the titlepage is irregularly torn away, with the "n" of Columbian gone along with half the publisher's line. Find a dampstain to head in index section, scattered smudges, more stains, small areas of ancient black mold (usually on foredge and upper corner-tip), the occasional tobacco-particle burn and food-fleck. A small marginal impact has dented foredge of all leaves from p.869 thru to terminal blanks. Find many tiny old doodles in both pencil and ink (mysterious geometrical figures). Front pastedown bears an old armorial bookplate belonging to one J.C.B. Peard, his motto in English: "Put Forward" Printed here is first or second appearance of the US Constitution in a serial (precedence considered unknowable) and firsts of two earliest American novels, Amelia (complete in two installments) and The Foresters (incomplete, completed in a 1788 number). Occasional mention of slavery from the Abolitionist point of view. Texts commence with September 1786, first issue, and run consecutively through to December 1787, concluding with unpaginated indices to Miscellaneous Pieces and to the mag's "Columbian Parnassiad." The Constitution runs pp.659 - 665, printed in Columbian's customary double-columns over George Washington's signature in type, a bit rippled with a few small stains. The Foresters begins at p.453, Amelia at p.677. As stated, visuals are incomplete; at p.300 for instance, we see a stub obviously scissored with a remnant of copperplate border remaining. Illustrations present: titlepage device (bird perched on a globe, a shield, a plow, a lyre). Figure III, placed between Oct/Nov 86, a doublespread showing fossil bones and a swordfish; much dust, foldlines and soil. Figure 1 (not consecutive) opposite p.181, a nice copper engraving of "Plan of a Granary" in good shape. Fig. II, Plan for a Bridge to be built over Schuykill" a little dusty, opposite p.244. At 326/7, Fig. 2 a doublespread of "New Solar Dial," a sort of clockwork sundial; rather dusty and stained. At 420/1 Figures 1, 2 and 3 on a single plate, untitled but seems to be a new improved candlestick. At 424/5 "Plan of some Ancient Works on the Muskingum," Native American earthen mounds (folded and misfolded, dusty and foxed with a tiny perforation). At 466/7, an unnumbered engraving, "Plan of a new Machine for raising water by wind"-- mildly dusty and stained. At 654/5 three figures on a single plate showing a living mollusc, a gigantic fossilized tooth, and a weighing device. At 826/7 four "figs" on a single copperplate all to do with a "Box for drilling Seed."

The History of Ayder Ali Khan, Nabob-Bahader: or New Memoirs concerning the East Indies. With Historical Notes

1786 - Second edition, of the first English edition. With a folding map. Two volumes. 12mo. Contemporary half calf over marbled paper boards, spine gilt; both vols. rubbed, minor loss to head-caps, joints split (though still holding), Mechanics' Institute Library labels on upper boards and endpapers; map foxed, rest of interior clean and fresh. Overall, a good copy. pp. x,254; (ii),198. London: J. Johnson. A robust account of the life of Hyder Ali Khan (c.1720-1782) who, as the Sultan of the Kingdom of Mysore, sternly resisted the British East India Company in the first two (of four) Anglo-Mysore wars. The author, a Frenchman by the name of M. Maistre de la Tour, states that he was driven to write his history to combat the ?rhapsodies? produced by ill-informed authors who had never been acquainted with the Sultan. Unlike those writers he claims, in his preface, to have been an ?eyewitness to part of his [Hyder?s] conquests, and of the glory that surrounds him? (p. x). First published in Paris in 1783, when the Anglo-French War (1778-83) was still burning, it is unsurprisingly (and arguably fairly) anti-British: ?If the English should find that they are not spared, it will not be in their power to reproach him [the author] with having invented any untruth? (p. v). Possibly unrecorded, with no copies of the second edition in Copac or WorldCat. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

- XXII + 8 n.n. + 336 + Zwischentitel + XIV + 10 n.n. + 392 S. OLd. der Zeit. Zwei Teile in einem Band. Mit gestochenen Vignetten. ADB XXXII, 63. - Ebd. berieben, Siegelresten a. V., Besitzsign. u. Siegel a. fl. Schmutztitel, Gbrsp., etw. fingerfleckig, tlw. stockfleckig. Vgl. Dict. hist. IV, 105; Biogr. méd. VII, 151; E. Gurlt, Kriegschirurgie der letzten 150 Jahre. Berlin 1875; Biogr. Lexik. V, 250 u. 251. (Zitat)
