1786 - A Genève, Chez Barde, Manget & Compagnie, 1786. PLEASANT COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

ACTS OF ASSEMBLY. PASSED IN THE ISLAND OF JAMAICA; FROM 1770, TO 1783, INCLUSIVE. [bound with:] AN ABRIDGMENT OF THE LAWS OF JAMAICA: COMPREHENDING THE SUBJECT-MATTER OF EACH ACT AND CLAUSE, PROPERLY DIGESTED. TO WHICH IS PREFIXED, BY WAY OF INDEX, A TABLE OF THE GENERAL TITLES AND MARGINAL NOTES.

Kingston, Jamaica: Printed for James Jones, Esq. by Lewis and Eberall, . 1786 - v,31,[1],4-424; [4],40pp. Quarto. Modern polished calf, gilt leather label. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage of ACTS.: "George Harrison Lincolns Inn 1791." Titlepage worn and soiled, repairs in top and bottom margin with no loss of text. Occasional minor foxing, last two leaves dampstained. Small hole in leaf F* with loss of a few letters. First four leaves and last four leaves of AN ABRIDGMENT. dampstained, leaf aa repaired (no loss of text), final leaf supplied in facsimile. These exceptions noted, very clean internally. A very good copy. First editions of two rare 18th-century Jamaican legal imprints. The volume was previously owned by legal author Sir George Harrison, the son of Thomas Harrison, who served as attorney-general and advocate- general of Jamaica. The elder Harrison's name is included in the list of subscribers for the ACTS., and father or son have made minor manuscript additions on a half dozen pages in the text. The volume records both public and private acts, organized chronologically for 1770 through 1783. The ABRIDGMENT., published as a separate work with separate titlepage, clearly supplements the ACTS. by listing the acts by subject and providing an index. There are numerous acts regarding slaves which provide much insight into that institution on the island, including legislation regarding runaways, "Free- Negroes," "Negro towns" and maroons, firearms, holidays, and even drumming. Other acts cover a wide range of laws and activities, including those related to land, roads, cattle, gaming, hawkers and pedlars, the militia, settlers, ships, and smuggling. All 18th-century Caribbean imprints are rare, most are extremely so, and these laws are no exception. Furthermore, the majority of Caribbean printing is often ephemeral and fairly slight, rather than a substantial volume such as this one. The first British colony south of Maryland to have a press, printing began in Jamaica in 1718. Except for several items printed in Havana by a press briefly established there, this was the first press in the Caribbean; however, only a handful of fugitive pieces survive from the 1770s. In that period the economic importance of Jamaica was supplemented by an influx of Loyalists who seems to have invigorated the cultural and publishing life of the colony, while the British government liberalized its colonial policy to avoid a repetition of the problems of the American Revolution. In this social and political climate, these retrospective laws of the local colonial government were printed. A very good copy of two rare 18th- century Jamaican imprints, with provenance related to the island and British legal history. SABIN 35617 (ACTS. and ABRIDGMENT.). CUNDALL SUPPLEMENT 446, 447. GOLDSMITH 13208. ESTC T140415. OCLC 28209638, 30304147, 31220784. DNB IX, p.32.

& Imp. Monasterii S. Salvatoris, 1786-1788. 3 parts (bound in 1 volume). Folio (422 x 280mm). pp. (2), ix, 85; (4), 115; (4), 87, with 3 engraved frontispieces, 3 engraved title-vignettes, 3 engraved vignettes showing the Pavia Botanic garden and 75 engraved plates. Contemporary vellum, gilt lettered label on spine. "Gems of the flora and fauna of Lombardy, including native and exotic species which have lived there. Contains many type illustrations of importance. Each copper plate was executed at the expense of a separate patron. The book is very rare ." (Wood 559); Pritzel 8558: "Aeusserst selten complett, indem einige Blätter bei der Einnahme von Pavia zu Grunde gingen"; Zimmer 565-566: ". the third (part) contains a discussion of the mammals and birds treated in Sonnerat's "Voyage a la Nouvelle Guinée", 1776, and "Voyage aux Indes Orientales et a la Chine", 1782, with short diagnoses and the first application of binomial names to the species ." This luxurious folio is Scopoli's most beautiful work, and as Nissen indicates it is one of the few really great natural history books produced in Italy during that time. The author was professor of botany at Pavia and the above work was printed at the monastry of San Salvatore, Pavia. It is of greatest rarity in complete state as sheets of the work were destroyed during the siege and capture of Pavia. 9 plates show insects, 2 shells, 2 snakes, 4 fishes, 2 birds, 1 a monkey and 1 minerals, all other plates show plants. A very fine broad-margined copy in an attractive contemporary Italian binding.Stafleu & Cowan 11.551; Nissen BBI, 1822. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Nurnberg: Gabriel Nicolaus Raspe, 1786. First Edition. Cloth over Marbled Boards. Very Good Plus. 4to. xxvi, 194 pp. With 20 hand-colored plates. The text pages have a light ink-blot-like foxing in many of the leaves where the text is. Most will not find this disconcerting, as since it seldom shows up in the margins, it is surely the result of a chemical reaction involving the paper composition and the ink over an extended period of time. In other words, it is to be found probably in virtually all extant copies. The plates are not only spared this, but they are immaculate, their coloring breathtaking.

Edinburgh: Printed by Murray & Cochrane. For T. Cadell., 1786. - David Dalrymple, third baronet, Lord Hailes (1726-1792) was a Scottish advocate, judge, and historian. Controversial when it was published, it was a minor blow in the ongoing controversy between theological traditionalists such as Hailes and more liberal thinkers, led by David Hume. Quarto.       - Carl Wilhelm Hahn (1786-1836) Original watercolors for Abbildungen Und Beschreibungen Merkwurdiger Naturgeschichtlicher Gegenstande Printed in Nuremberg 1816-1822 72 natural history hand-colored engravings including birds by Carl Wilhelm Hahn 10 1/2” x 8”; 16 1/2” x 14 1/2” framed (professionally framed with a beautiful gold leaf moulding with all archival materials and uv plexiglass) Carl Wilhelm Hahn was a German scientist of natural history, studying the nature of birds as well as spiders. His primary focus was devoted to the study of spiders which resulted in a publication of over 3,000 images entitled, Monograph of Spinner and Die Arachnidan, completed only after his death in 1857. He was also quite fascinated with ornithological studies which resulted in the collaboration of the publication of a two volume work with Johann Wolf, Abbildungen Und Beschreibengen Merkwurdiger naturgeschichtlicher Gegenstande (translated as The Natural History of Unusual Birds and other Animals with Illustations and Desciptions) published in Nuremberg from 1816-1822. These extraordinary original watercolors of a blue bird and parrot were two of only a few of Hahn’s studies used in this publication. The detail and accuracy of this painting are lovely. Hahn was concerned not only with the scientific accuracy of the Ibis, but also capturing the individuality and characteristic traits of its personality.

        [Vathek]

London: for J. Johnson,, 1786. An Arabian Tale, from an unpublished manuscript: with Notes Critical and Explanatory. Octavo. Contemporary tree calf, red morocco label, smooth spine with gilt urns in compartments, gilt Greek-key rolls, gilt lion crest in centre of covers. Rubbed, front joint tender, upper corners worn, but a good clean copy. First edition. Beckford's oriental novel, Vathek, was written in French between January and May 1782. This English translation by the literary scholar Samuel Henley was published first in June 1786, despite Beckford's express wish that the French edition should precede it. The latter was published in Lausanne in December 1786 (postdated 1787), with signs of hasty reconstruction from an earlier draft. Though angered by the piracy, Beckford appreciated Henley's expertise as an orientalist and retained his notes in later editions. Vathek remains a classic of British Gothic fiction, alongside Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, Ann Radcliffe's Mysteries of Udolpho, and M. G. Lewis's The Monk.

The history of ancient Greece, its colonies, and conquests; from the earliest accounts till the division of the Macedonian Empire in the east. Including the History of Literature, Philosophy, and the Fine Arts. In two volumes.

printed for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell, in the Strand MDCCLXXXVI [1786], London - First Edition. 4to in 2 volumes: xvi, 684; viii, 718, [29], [1]pp, with 2 folding maps, "The Western Division of the Grecian Colonies and Conquests" and "The Eastern Division of the Grecian Colonies and Conquests." Uniformly bound in period full tree calf, the spines divided into six compartments with gilt tooling and red and olive-green morocco lettering pieces, and with French blue silk page markers and marbled end papers. An excellent wide-margined set, the bindings tight and secure (though the boards of vol. 2 a bit bowed), pages fresh and bright, the engraved maps in rich impressions properly folded. Provenance: Julio Berzunza, with his bookplate to the front paste downs. Beginning in the 1920s, Berzunza amassed a comprehensive collection of Alexandriana, totaling nearly 1000 books, manuscripts, maps, engravings and artifacts, the basis for his landmark work, "A tentative classification of books, pamphlets, and pictures concerning Alexander the Great and the Alexander romances, from the collection of Julio Berzunza." ESTC Citation No. T99924. Gillies constructed his briefly popular narrative of classical Greek history from ancient literary sources, both histories and other genres. But the "revolution in ancient history brought about by source analysis, epigraphy, and archaeology, together with changes in literary taste, brought total oblivion to both books and their author."         Hortus Nitidissimis omnem per annum superbiens floribus.

Nuremberg: Fleischmann, and Adam Ludwig Wirsing, [plates dated 1753-1786]. - Folio (18 x 13 inches). 172 fine hand-colored engraved plates by J.M. Seligman, J.M. Stock and A.L. Wirsing after G.D. Ehret, G.W. Baurenfeind, B.R. and M.B. Dietschin, N.F. Eisenberger, J.C. Keller and others (plates 60 and 61, and 121 and 122 counted as one plate each, bound without plates 90, 126, 131, 135, 179 and 180, first two plates with slight vertical crease, plate 97 with small tear at fold not affecting the image). Bound without text. Contemporary mottled calf (joints cracked, extremities scuffed). "ONE OF FINEST RECORDS OF THE CULTIVATED FLOWERS OF THE PERIOD" (Dunthorne). First edition, bound, as often found, without text, which was not published simultaneously with the plates. Described by Blunt as "one of the most decorative florilegia of the mid-eighteenth century" with more than forty of the plates based on drawings by Trew's famous protégé Georg Ehret with whom he had collaborated on "Plantae Selectae". The spectacular plates are "full sized colored figures of Hyacinths, Tulips (over 20 plates), Ranunculi, Anemones, Caryophylli, Lilies, Auriculas, Roses, Narcissi, Iris, Cheiranthi, Asters, Fritilleries, Crown Imperials" (Dunthorne), and are some of the most sought after and important botanical prints in the world. It is no wonder that he became one of the foremost illustrators of botanical images of his time, at a time when it can be said that art of this nature was highly prized and passionately collected. Like his father before him Ehret trained as a gardener, initially working on estates of German nobility, and painting flowers only occasionally, another skill taught him by his father, who was a good draughtsman. Ehret’s "first major sale of flower paintings came through Dr Christoph Joseph Trew, eminent physician and botanist of Nuremberg, who recognized his exceptional talent and became both patron and lifelong friend. Ehret sent him large batches of watercolours on the fine-quality paper Trew provided. In 1733 Trew taught Ehret the botanical importance of floral sexual organs and advised that he should show them in detail in his paintings. Many Ehret watercolours were engraved in Trew's works, such as ‘Hortus Nitidissimus’ [as here] (1750–86) and ‘Plantae selecta’e (1750–73), in part two of which (1751) Trew named the genus Ehretia after him. "During 1734 Ehret travelled in Switzerland and France, working as a gardener and selling his paintings. While at the Jardin des Plantes, Paris, he learned to use body-colour on vellum, thereafter his preferred medium. In 1735 he travelled to England with letters of introduction to patrons including Sir Hans Sloane and Philip Miller, curator of the Chelsea Physic Garden. In the spring of 1736 Ehret spent three months in the Netherlands. At the garden of rare plants of George Clifford, banker and director of the Dutch East India Company, he met the great Swedish naturalist, Carl Linnaeus, who was then formulating his new classification based on plant sexual organs. Ehret painted a Tabella (1736), illustrating the system, and sold engravings of it to botanists in Holland. Some of his paintings of the exotics were engraved in Linnaeus's "Hortus Cliffortianus" (1737). "[Ehret] signed and dated his work, naming the subject in pre-Linnaean terms. He published a florilegium, "Plantae et papiliones rariores" (1748–62), with eighteen hand-coloured plates, drawn and engraved by himself. Ehret also provided plant illustrations for several travel books. His distinctive style greatly influenced his successors" (Enid Slatter for DNB). The number of plates bibliographers have associated with this work differs considerably: Brunet V:943 (calls for 190 plates); Dunthorne 310 (180 plates, actually 178); Great Flower Books p. 78 (180 plates, plates 60/61 and 121/122 are represented by one plate each); Johnston "Cleveland Collections" 493 (190 plates); Nissen BBI 1995 (180 plates, 60/61 and 121/122 each on one plate, referance to Tjaden with 190 plates); Pritzel 9500 (180 plates); Sta [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS, AND OTHER RITES AND CEREMONIES, AS REVISED AND PROPOSED TO THE USE OF THE PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Philadelphia: Printed by Hall and Sellers, 1786.. [364]pp. plus 6 [of 8]pp. of music. Lacks the errata leaf. 12mo. Contemporary red morocco, gilt, leather onlays on covers. Extremities worn. Small piece of titlepage torn away at foredge, affecting border and two letters of text. Light tanning and foxing. A good copy. In a half morocco box. The American Protestant Episcopal Church was founded at a convention in Philadelphia in 1785, as an adaptation of the Church of England in the new United States. At the convention it was agreed to create a separate prayer book. The present title is the result, and it caused great controversy upon its publication. Among the ill-considered revisions were "changes and omissions of such drastic nature as among other things the deletion of the Nicene and Athanasian Creeds. The Proposed Book proved unwelcome to clergy and laity, even its suggestion of a prayer for the Fourth of July being taken exception to. Its use was brief and not general" (Page). "This edition, contains the alterations which were intended to adapt the Book of Common Prayer, of the Church of England, to the changed political conditions of this country; and is the result of a convention held in Philadelphia, in 1785, presided over by the Reverend William White. The proposed Prayer Book met with much criticism and opposition in the church, owing to its radical changes, and was never adopted." - Evans. EVANS 19940. PAGE, THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER 51. (He suffered from mental illness and apparently ended his own life.) He was created the Marques de Sonora for his valuable services to the crown, among which may be numbered this digest of mining laws, of which Sabin says it is "a rare and valuable compendium of the old mining laws and mineral customs."         Lectures on Select Subjects in Mechanics, Hydrostatics, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, and Optics. With The Use of the Globes, The Art of Dialling, and The Calculation of the Mean Times of New and Full Moons and Eclipses. [Bound with:] A Supplement to the

Preceding Lectures London: Printed for W Strahan J Rivington and Sons and others: Sixth edition 1786 - 8vo., xiv, 402pp. + 48pp., half-title present, with 36 finely engraved folding plates (complete) of scientific phenomena such as eyes, air pumps, globes, cranes, sun dials , marbled endpapers, bound in contemporary speckled calf, professionally and skilfully rebacked with the original morocco title label neatly relaid. An unusally VG+ clean tightly bound copy with all the plates in nice condition. James Ferguson (1710-76), astronomer, instrument maker, lecturer, natural and experimental philosopher, was born at Core of Mayen, near Rothiemay in Banffshire, Scotland. According to his autobiography, he learnt to read by hearing his father teach his elder brother, and with the help of an old woman was able to read quite well before his father thought of teaching him. After his father taught him to write, he was sent at the age of seven for three months to the grammar school at Keith. His taste for mechanics was about this time accidentally awakened on seeing his father making use of a lever to raise a part of the roof of his house — an exhibition of strength which excited his wonder. In 1720 he was sent to a neighbouring farm to keep sheep, where he amused himself by making models of machines, and at night he studied the stars. Afterwards, as a servant with a miller, and then with a doctor, he met with hardships which rendered his constitution feeble through life. Being compelled by his health to return home, he then amused himself with making a clock having wooden wheels and a whalebone spring. When slightly recovered he showed this and some other inventions to a gentleman, who employed him to clean his clocks, and to make his house his home. He there began to draw patterns for needlework, and his success in this art led him to think of becoming a painter. In 1734 he went to Edinburgh, where he began to make portraits in miniature, by which means, while engaged in his scientific studies, he supported himself and his family for many years. Subsequently he settled at Inverness, where he drew up his Astronomical Rotula for showing the motions of the planets, places of the sun and moon, &c., and in 1743 went to London, England, which was his home for the rest of his life. He wrote various papers for the Royal Society of London, of which he became a Fellow in November 1763, devised astronomical and mechanical models, and in 1748 began to give public lectures on experimental philosophy. These he repeated in most of the principal towns in England. His deep interest in his subject, his clear explanations, his ingeniously constructed diagrams, and his mechanical apparatus rendered him one of the most successful of popular lecturers on scientific subjects. It is, however, as the inventor and improver of astronomical and other scientific apparatus, and as a striking instance of self-education, that he claims a place among the most remarkable men of science of his country. During the latter years of his life he was in receipt of a pension of £50 from the privy purse. He died in London on 17 November 1776 and was buried in St Marylebone churchyard.         A Voyage to the Cape of Good Hope,

London, G. G. J. and J. Robinson,, 1786. towards the Antarctic Polar Circle, and Round the World: but chiefly into the Country of the Hottentots and Caffres, from the Year 1772, to 1776. Translated from the Swedish Original. 2 volumes, quarto. (222 × 272mm). Bound in contemporary lightly sprinkled tan full calf, sympathetically rebacked, smooth spine, double gilt ruled compartments, red-brown morocco labels. Folding map and 10 engraved plates. Some light browning, short closed tear to the map, boards a little rubbed, but overall a very good copy. Second Edition, Corrected. A botanist and disciple of Linnaeus, Sparrman's desire to travel was stimulated by an early trip as a surgeon on a Royal Swedish East India Company ship to Canton via the Cape. Further opportunities were thwarted by his lack of funds. However, in 1771 his friend Capt. Ekeberg of the RSEIC obtained for him the position of tutor to the children of M. Kerst sub-Governor of the Cape. Once settled there his intention to undertake an expedition to the interior was interrupted by the arrival at the Cape of Cook on his Second Voyage, who Sparrman accompanied as assistant to the naturalist Johann Georg Forster, experiences which he recounts but briefly here. On his return in 1775 he had accrued sufficient funds to finance his own expedition and "... set out overland from the Cape... in the company of a South African named Immelmanm paralleling the Southern coast and visiting the regions of Swellerdam, Mossel Bay and the country to the north of Port Elizabeth. His furthest east was the Great Fish River." [Howgego] Theal describes this as the C18th's "most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people residing in it." He made the first study of the Bushmen and relates many incidents illustrating the hospitality of the Dutch farmers and their "dense ignorance" of matters outside their own country. Also alludes to the "cruelty of the treatment of the slaves by the lower classes of the colonists." [Mendelssohn] On his return to Sweden he was elected to the Academy of Sciences and appointed as conservator of the museum. Later returned to Africa as part of an expedition to the West Coast searching for suitable locations for Swedish settlement. Attractive contemporary armorial sepia-printed bookplates of Smith, motto "temperato splendeat usu", to the front pastedowns.

The work is considered valuable in part for its references to manuscripts and unpublished books and poems. For example, the index of volume I includes a list of "Traducciones españolas mss. e impressas de toda la Biblia, y las de algunos de sus libros" (ff. Tttt3v?Xxxx1v).Rodriguez de Castro (1739?ca. 1795) was a Spanish Christian rabbinic scholar who was probably of Jewish descent.
