Zwei Theile in zwei Bänden.

Group of Four Items, Manuscript and Partially Printed, pertaining to Nicholas Biddle:

      - Group of manuscript and partially printed materials Nicholas Biddle, author, scholar, statesman and financier 1786-1844. Biddle established the Bank of the United States as a prototype of the modern central banking system. Using the power of the bank to expand and contract the money supply, Biddle played a prominent role in creating a stable currency and in bringing order to the chaotic American marketplace. Biddle, Nicholas (1786-1844) [Autograph Letter Signed, Philadelphia February 9, 1831 to Silas E. Burrows, New York] One page quarto, inscribed on a four page bi-folium, old folds, hole in integral address leaf where sealing wax was removed during opening, postal markings, else in very good clean condition. Letter written to Burrows while Biddle, as stockholder's director, was embroiled in controversy surrounding the Bank of the United States. Biddle replies to Burrows' reported ill health and then touches upon the subject of the Bank: "¿The vote in the Senate is considered there as a very strong one, and proves much more than the numerical difference would at first indicate. It is so harsh & ungracious & unusual a thing to refuse leave, that many voted for it who are friendly to the Bank and if the bill had been introduced I believe that on its final rejection the vote would have been very nearly if not two thirds of the Senate. I think that there were among those who voted for leave five who would have voted to reject and of the five absentees two certainly & probably three would have been on their side- so that I should think a vote of 30 for the Bank would have been obtainable." Biddle, Nicholas (1786-1844) [Autograph Letter Signed, Paris, January 29, 1805, to Nathaniel Cutting, Paris] One page, quarto, inscribed on four page bi-folium, sealing wax and postal markings, else in very good, clean condition. Written while Biddle, was Secretary to General John Armstrong, the American Minister to France. Among the tasks which fell to the American legation at this time was the settlement of the claims of those who had been despoiled by French privateers in the Napoleonic Wars. Biddle, though only 18 at the time, was entrusted with the auditing and payment of these spoliation claims allowed by the French Government, which were to be met out of the Louisiana Purchase Fund. The present letter deals with these matters: "I am directed by General Armstrong to inform you, in reply to your note of the 22d inst. That with regard to the cases of Andrew Dunlap & Joseph White as they do not come before him under the principles of the 10 Art. of the convention he cannot know the amount of the liquidation. He desires me further to mention to you that the claimants will not have long to wait for the issuing of the Bills and that he does not want the books & charts, a list of which you have inclosed to him." Pair of printed drafts. signed by Biddle: United States of America. State of Pennsylvania. The Bank of the United States Philadelphia [Oct. 2nd (in mss)] 1837.[Fourteen] Months after date, The President, Directors, and Company f the Bank of the United States, promise to pay at its London Agency to the Bearer, [One Thousand Pounds Sterling] ¿ [Philadelphia: Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co., 1837] engraved draft, accomplished in manuscript, signed by Nicholas Biddle and the cashier of the Bank of the United States. Marked paid. Paper somewhat browned, old folds and creases, small hole in the "F" of the word "Fourteen" where the ink burned through the paper. Else good. Small engraved draft, 1/11/1839, drawn on the Bank of the United States, signed by Biddle, paper browned, stained, some loss, mounted on old sheet, fair despite all faults.

Goldsmiths’-Kress library of economic literature ; no. 13181.5. Palau, 87930. The first 16 plates are derived from the larger prints by Cochin based on drawings by Giuseppe Castiglione, a missionary artist in the Court of the Emperor. Helman added 8 further prints to make up this work, which records the battles, victories and ceremonies of the Emperor Qianlong (1735-1796). Cochin seized on the commerciality of Chinese imagery in the European market in the late 18th century, publishing several other works on China. This series of plates is rare, with just 3 copies of the work recorded in ABPC since 1977.

Provenance: Arthur Jacob Bequest; RCSI library (library- and ownership stamps to titles). ---- Poggendorf I, 546 - D.S.B. IV, 29. - FIRST EDITION, London issue. Jean André Deluc (1727-1817) was a Swiss-born British geologist and meteorologist who studied the effects of heat and pressure on the mercury barometer and, as a pioneer in scientific mountaineering, published the first correct rules for using the barometer to find the heights of mountains. He discovered that water attains its maximum density at 4° C and developed the theory that the quantity of water vapour in any given space is independent of the density of the air in which it is diffused. He further noticed the disappearance of heat in the thawing of ice about the same time that Joseph Black founded on it his ingenious hypothesis of latent heat. The present work on meteorology also contains important sections on heat and combustion and the controversy over the discovery of latent heats (see D. McKie and N. H. de V. Heathcote, The discovery of specific and latent heats (London, 1935) pp. 48-50). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph letter signed "Sydney" regarding the transfer of a young lieutenant

Albemarle Street: 23 August, 1786. Manuscript letter on laid and water-marked paper, folded to letter-size 240 x 186 mm., closely written to 2 pp., manuscript docket note to fourth page; splitting at old folds, some browning yet good. A rare example of Sydney's signature while Home Secretary; the letter seeks patronage favour for private rather than public interests. On 18 August 1786, a mere five days before writing this letter, Sydney had delivered his speech to the Treasury promoting Botany Bay as the site of Britain's new penal colony. This manuscript, which presumably because it concerns private affairs is entirely in the Home Secretary's hand, concerns the reinstatement of one "Lieutenant Hutchinson", formerly of the 46th Regiment and now on half-pay. It appears Sydney had some affection for young Hutchinson, stressing the importance of finding him a position and 'taking him out of a state of idleness to which much danger belongs in the case of a young man of very high spirits & very considerable talents'. Given the dating of this letter, it is clear that this was the William Hutchinson who was posted lieutenant of the 59th Regiment in early September the same year, a few days after this letter was sent (testament to Sydney's political clout). Hutchinson's regiment was stationed in Gibraltar.

        Manuscript memorandum to Lord Sydney

Burton Pynsent, Somerset: 5 October, 1786. Manuscript note in ink on paper, 102 x 182 mm; in good condition; evidently once mounted in an album. A short memorandum written by the Prime Minister from his private country house to Lord Sydney as Home Secretary. Pitt is returning the 'dispatches to Gibraltar and Algiers which he received by the Post this evening, and has marked some words in the letter… which if Lord Sydney approve of it, he thinks might as well be omitted…'. Pitt's legible hand is difficult to decipher only in his identification of the recipient of the draft letter to which he refers, which may read 'letter to Bey', the title by which the ruler of Algiers was still known at the time. This slight document has an appeal in making the connection between these two men just six weeks after Pitt's government had made the formal decision to send convicts to Botany Bay, to a place that would shortly be named for his Home Secretary.

A View of the South side of the Fort of Gwalior

      J. Wells, London 1786 - Aquatint, printed in two or more colours, coloured by hand to resemble watercolour, by Hodges. A fine print from the very rare hand-coloured issue of Hodges' "Select Views in India", the pioneering work on the architectural and picturesque wonders of India. This fine image resulted from Hodges' six year stay in India under the patronage of Warren Hastings and was published in three separate forms: uncoloured, uncoloured proof or hand-coloured to resemble the original drawing, as here. The image was were printed lightly in a single operation using two (sepia and blue) or more colours applied to a single plate, these prints were then coloured by hand (probably by Hodges himself) with great freedom but with careful attention being paid to achieving a depth of colour and shading only possible through the repeated over-painting of contrasting pigments. The print therefore retains much of the idiosyncratic vibrancy of the original watercolour. Born in London the son of a smith, William Hodges was employed as an errand-boy in Shipley's drawing school, where in his spare time he managed to learn drawing. The landscape painter Richard Wilson (1714-1782) noticed him and took him on as his assistant and pupil, and by 1766 Hodges was exhibiting in his own right. In 1772, through the interest of Lord Palmerston (1739-1802) a member of the board of Admiralty, he was appointed as draughtsman to Captain James Cook's second expedition to the South Seas. He returned in 1775 and was employed by the Admiralty in working up his drawings of the expedition and in supervising the engraving of the plates for Cook's published account of the expedition. He exhibited a number of pictures inspired by the voyage at the Royal Academy in London in 1776 and 1777. Life in London must have seemed quite restrained after his South Sea Island experiences, and in 1778 he left for India, where he worked under the patronage of the Governor-General Warren Hastings (1732-1818) and remained in India for about six years, experiencing at first hand one of the most important periods in the establishment of British supremacy in India. On his return to England in 1784 he set about the publication of 'Select Views in India.' Its appearance would have caused a sensation , as nothing of the scenery of India on this scale had been seen before (Humboldt cited the Hodges views as one of the inducements which led him to travel). Hodges thereafter continued to paint and to exhibit at the Royal Academy, but did not manage to achieve the heights that he reached with his Indian views. Cf. Abbey Travel II, 416; cf. Brunet III, 242; cf. Lowndes II, p.1079; cf. Tooley 264. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

OBSERVATIONS SUR LA VIRGINIE, PAR M. J*** TRADUITES DE L'ANGLOIS. French translation by the Abbé André Morellet

Paris: Chez Barrois l'ainé, 1786.. 4pp. errata. Folding letterpress table; folding engraved "Map of the country between Albermarle Sound and, Lake Erie, comprehending the whole of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania, with parts of several other of the United States" by Samuel Neale, uncolored and printed on two joined sheets (as issued). Half title. Contemporary French marbled calf, spine gilt, red morocco label. Marbled endpapers. Minor wear at head and foot of spine. Very good. In a half mottled calf and cloth clamshell case, spine tooled and lettered in gilt. Provenance: Sam Harrison (inscription dated 1788); Jean Patterson (inscriptions in both French and English). The first edition of NOTES... was printed privately for Jefferson in 1785 in an edition limited to 200 copies, which he distributed to personal friends. Initially Jefferson had resisted the idea of publishing the work so that it could reach a larger audience. However, the widespread interest the book aroused soon led to rumors that a pirated edition would appear, and to forestall this, regular published editions came out with his blessing in French (the present work, OBSERVATIONS... translated by the Abbe Morallet and published in Paris in 1786) and in English (London, 1787) soon followed by an American edition (Philadelphia, 1788). The work ultimately went through several dozen editions before his death, and remains in print today. This is the only book- length work published during Jefferson's lifetime and is a cornerstone of any collection of printed Americana. The first private edition is virtually unobtainable, making this edition not only the first published edition, but also the first which is even remotely obtainable. The map, here in its first state, is an important document in its own right and was engraved by Samuel J. Neale in London from a drawing produced (at the urging of Morallet) by Jefferson himself specifically for this edition. "The Abbe engaged me to make a map...It is on a single sheet 23 inches square, and very closely written...tho' it is on the scale of only an inch to twenty miles...I answer for the exactness of the reduction. I have supplied some new places. Tho' the first object which induced me to undertake it was to make a map for my book, I soon extended my view to the making as good a map of those countries as my materials would admit" - Jefferson, in a letter to Edward Bancroft. Coolie Verner goes into the details of the production of the map: Neale completed the initial engraving on Dec. 21, 1786 and immediately despatched the printing plate with proofs to Paris. Unfortunately, a problem with the original drawing meant that there were numerous errors in the printing plate. Jefferson corrected a proof which was given, together with the printing plate, to Parisian engraver Guillaume Delahaye. The engraver corrected the errors and was able to deliver 250 proofs to Jefferson on March 24, 1787. This first impression was printed on thick paper and was handcolored in outline. The paper was too thick to allow for the map to be folded, and copies were eventually offered for sale as individual maps - this much is known from correspondence and contemporary advertisements, but no examples of this impression are currently known to exist. After Delahaye completed his work he delivered the printing plate to publisher Barrois. Jefferson asked Barrois to arrange for the printing of 200 copies of the map on thinner paper so that it could be inserted in copies of the private edition of his NOTES.... Two hundred copies of the second impression were printed in April 1787, on two joined sheets and handcolored in outline. The present third impression of the first state was printed for Barrois for inclusion in OBSERVATIONS...: it was limited to about 1,150 copies, on two joined sheets like the second impression, but uncolored. The printing plate subsequently returned to London where John Stockdale added his imprint to the foot of the plate and printed the second issue in two impressions: the first of 1,025 examples in July 1787 (on a single sheet of lightweight paper, handcolored in outline); and the second in March 1788 in an impression of about 300 uncolored copies. Jefferson originally wrote NOTES... in response to a series of queries sent to him by French diplomat François Barbé-Marbois, composing them after the defeat of the British at Yorktown in 1781. On the urging of their mutual friend, distinguished French soldier and scientist the Marquis de Chastellux, he later expanded his responses into a series of twenty-three essays on every aspect of his native state; geography, landforms, products, agriculture, climate, population, armed forces, Indians, towns, laws, religion, manners, and history. NOTES... is vastly informative, but it was also a mirror of Jefferson's tastes and personality. J.M. Edelstein noted: "Jefferson wrote about things which interested him deeply and about which he knew a great deal; the NOTES, therefore, throws a fascinating light on his tastes, curiosities, and political and social opinions." CLARK I:262. DEGREES OF LATITUDE 72 (state 1). HOWES J78. SABIN 35895. SOWERBY, JEFFERSON'S LIBRARY 4167. STEPHENSON & McKEE, VIRGINIA IN MAPS, p.92. VAIL 746.

Demonville, 1786 First Edition. A good copy; small worm holes at the rear joint; some chafing. 12mo.,. [8], 228, [4] pp. & errata. Joullain described prints as objects that, ' ... compensate for the inequality of fortunes by satisfying amateurs of every sort.' With this remark he sets out to produce a guide to the bewildering world of prints and engravings and to the perilous marketplace for them as it existed. After describing print processes he addresses associated topics: cabinets of objects and collections. While discussing the Paignon, Crozat,Tallard, Gaignat collections (among others he mentions) he reveals that his father and grandfather were responsible for cataloging the Paignon collection of medals, prints, natural history, and antiquities (this seems at odds with Millard's brief entries for the elder members of the Joullain family whom he identifies as engravers and publishers). Also of interest is the anaylsis of contemporary markets for such objects citing specific examples. A book of considerable interest for the history of the decorative arts.
