Ingolstadt, 1786. - Deutsche Handschrift auf Papier. (2), 86 SS. (davon 66f. und 70f. weiß). Pappband der Zeit mit gepr. Deckelschildchen, datiert "1786". 4to (170 x 195 mm).

Very Good. A Vaucluse, 1786. First edition. Frontispiece. 13.8 cm. In-12 (4+8), [xiv; 104 pages]. Épitre Dedicatoire à M. Jean Camard and the Préface de M. Querlon, Bibliothécaire de M. Beaujon precede the text, and La Rocambole, ou Notes Édifiantes et Récréatives follow the text (pp. 81 1040). With a frontispiece (Te Deum Laudamus) that is both sacrilegious and sadomasochistic, showing M. lAbbé making his point on the duchess with a scourge in his right hand and devotional images above two prie-dieux in the background. This untrimmed copy has been re-backed. A bright, crisp copy, with occasional pencil high-lighting. There are copies at the Bibliothèque nationale, Yale, and the British Library. Claude-Henri de Fusée de Voisenon addressed an epistle to Voltaire at the age of 11 years, who returned his thanks and predicted a career for the precocious youngster. The two of them remained friends for half a century. Coming from a great French family, Voisenon was ordained a priest in 1739 and became grand-vicaire of the Diocese of Boulogne, of which the bishop was his uncle. His uncle assigned him the task of editing the bishops pronouncements, which came out more as epigrams than edifying thoughts. He endeared himself to the people of the diocese to such a degree that they demanded he succeed his uncle. Voisenon, himself, went to Versailles to request that he not be named, accepting instead the Abbey of Jard, close to Melun. Well-known in the best circles of French society, Voisenon accepted an annuity of 6,000 from Louis XV to write Essais historiques for use by Louis XVs grandson. He was elected to lAcademie française in 1762, occupying Fauteuil 13, the seventh person to have that seat. He wrote erotic literature like Exercises de Devotion in addition to comedies and an opera (LAmour et Psyché).

Proceedings at a meeting of the British inhabitants of Fort St. George, Madras, on Monday, September 19, 1785, in consequence of a summons by the High Sheriff of the said town. With an address to His Majesty, and petitions to both Houses of Parliament, on the subject of Mr. Pitt's East-India Bill.

London: J. Debrett. MDCCLXXXVI 1786 - 8vo., (2) + 36pp., some minor staining of title-page, recent marbled boards lettered on spine. A good copy. Only edition. Virtually the whole of the British ex-pat population were in a state of high dudgeon about Pitt's India Act> of 1784. Their complaints turned particularly on their change of status vis-à-vis the new system of criminal jurisdiction. Meetings of British residents had already taken place in Calcutta in July, and in Cawnpore as early as March. Both meetings had resulted in strong complaints being forwarded to London. The Fort St. George meeting in September underlined the uncompromising mood. In a letter to the King, the residents regretfully complained that: 'We observe, with inexpressable concern, that the Act of Parliament, passed in the 24th year of your Majesty's reign, and entitled, An Act for the better regulation and management of the affairs of the East-India Company, and for establishing a Court of Judicature for the more speedy and effectual trial of persons accused of offences committed in the East Indies>, is liable to an interpretation extremely adverse to that freedom and protection which are equally claimed by every subject in your Majesty's dominions. The privilege of trial by jury is there taken away from us, and our persons and property endangered without even the formation of a charge, or any alledged cause of suspicion against us'.

Rif. Bibl.: Hunt 679; Nissen BBI 878; Jackson, p111; Pritzel 4076; see Johnson, pp. 207-209.

Paris: Historie Naturelle Des Oiseaux 1786 - Sheet Dimension: 9.5 x 8 in. Frame Dimension: 18.5 x 16.75 in. Hand-colored copperplate engraving. Francois Nicolas Martinet engraved illustrations of birds for books by some of the most influential ornithologist in 18th-century France. This edition, containing 1,008 images by Martinet, was certainly the most ambitious and comprehensive bird book, which had appeared at the time of it publication. Martinet completed both the original drawings and hand-engraved all of the copperplates. A broad spectrum of birds are shown, including birds native to Europe, as well as exotic tropical birds such as parrots and toucans. Each is rendered in a scientific manner, outlined in yellow border. They are distinctly 18th century in conception and style, generally with a hint of the bird's habitat, such as a tree branch, rock or water.

ondon- R Faulder, 1786 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. First edition.. A scarce first edition of this work by Joseph Baretti. Joseph Baretti was an Italian literary critic, poet, writer, translator, linguist and author. Baretti's life was peppered with controversies and this work is no exception, and is a scathing and bitter reply to an attack by English Hispanist John Bowle. In 1785, Bowle had published an attack on Joseph Baretti and his editing of Don Quixote. Bowle himself had published what is now considered the firstscholarly edition of DonQuixote, and complained of its negative reception and the difficulty in its publication and translation. Baretti wrote thisresponse in the following year. Condition: Recently and expertly rebound in half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, in lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound. Lacks half tile as usual with the rebinding. Pages bright with spotting throughout. Loose newspaper clipping inserted. Ink signature of John Frost to verso of the title page. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.

The Great Siege of Gibraltar was an unsuccessful attempt by Spain and France, during the American War of Independence, to capture British territory on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula, won from Spain, in 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession. This was the largest action fought during the war in terms of numbers, particularly the Grand Assault of 18 September 1782. The siege, by both land and naval forces, put the garrison under great pressure, as food and fuel became scarce. Two successful naval expeditions, in 1780 and 1781, evaded the blockade to bring provisions and extra troops, and to evacuate civilians. The siege was lifted, and Gibraltar remained a key British naval base in the Mediterranean. At age fifteen, Drinkwater joined the Royal Manchester Volunteers, which were besieged at Gibraltar June 1779 and February 1783. Using his careful notes, Drinkwater later compiled this history, which went through four editions in four years. N. B.
