The Universal Conchologist, exhibiting the Figure of every known Shell, accurately drawn and painted after Nature: with a new systematic arrangement by the Author .../ Figures of non-descript Shells collected in the different Voyages to the South Seas since the year 1764 ... London, sold at his house no.

16 Great Malborough Street, 1784. 2 volumes. Folio (405 x 405mm). With handcoloured engraved frontispiece of a shell within a gilt Greek key border, 3 engraved title pages, engraved dedication leaf, 2 explanatory tables and 1 leaf observation on the explanatory table, 27 pages text both in English and French, and 80 handcoloured engraved plates, and 1 unrecorded handcoloured engraved plate 'the Purse Mollusca'. Contemporary brown half morocco, richly gilt ornamented spines with gilt lettering, marbled sides. A fine copy of a very rare Large-Format 'deluxe' issue (see below) of one of the most attractive shell book ever published. The work was extended to four volumes but these two, devoted to shells of the South Seas, were published as a separate work. "From the introduction to 'The Universal Conchologist' we learn that it was 'to commence with the figures of shells (most of them rare and nondescript) which have been collected by several officers of the ships under the command of Captain Byron, Wallis, Cook, and others made to the South Seas' ... When the 'Resolution' and the 'Discovery' returned from the third and last voyage in 1780 (the dealer) Humphrey purchased some more shells, but the bulk of the conchological spoils were this time to Thomas Martyn, a knowledgeable dealer, versatile writer and gifted artist ... Unlike Humphrey and other dealers who snapped up the Cook shells Thomas Martyn had more than a pecuniary interest in his purchases, Martyn's reason for wanting to corner the market in South Seas shells was entirely praiseworthy; although he sold many of the shells he had bought, he illustrated the finest in 'The Universal Conchologist', his magnum opus (and) a work, which for, beauty, has seldom been surpassed in the history of conchological iconography" (Dance, Hist. of Shell Collecting)./Martyn purchased shells brought back from Cook's third voyage, although, as he wrote to Henry Seymer on 9 December 1780, 'I have purchased, amounting to 400 gns, more than 2 thirds of the whole brought home, Nevertheless I do not abound either in the variety of the new or many duplicates of the known ones that are valuable'. As a result, he modified his project and instead of presenting two shells on each plate, presented only one but depicted in two different views. Besides the specimens deriving from Cook's voyages, Martyn included specimens from the collections of the Duchess of Portland, the Countess of Bute, John Hunter, the Forsters, and others./The fine plates were drawn by Martyn and engraved and coloured by his 'Academy' of young men who he had trained as natural history artists. The plates, each showing a single species in two positions, were engraved in soft aquatint and printed lightly inked, so that when handcoloured they would resemble watercolours./Thomas Martyn (ca 1760-1816) was a native of Coventry, who lived in London at various addresses, most notably 10, Great Marlborough Street, Westminster, where he established his academy for the painting of Natural History. Besides the present work, his 'chef d'oeuvre', he published works on a dirigible balloon he designed, and various works of entomology, and colour theory. //The 'deluxe' large paper edition (405 x 405mm) is much bigger than the 4to edition (345 x 280mm), the plates are mounted on large sheets of blue mounts, the format of the plates is altered from portrait to landscape, in rectangular rather than square-ruled frames./The 'deluxe' issue also differs in letterpress and has 27 pages of text, the ordinary issue has 39 pages, divided into 'Introduction' and 'Preface'. /The following differences were first noticed by Dall: Plate 43 has two views of shell. There is only one view in the quarto. Plate 57 and 59; same remark. Plates 61 and 63, the figures are side by side. In the quarto (owing to the smaller page?) they are placed diagonally' (Dall, 'Supplementary notes' p. 186). I have noticed that the following plates also differ, with the ones in the present copy being placed side-by-side within larger frames: 2, 30, and 35. Plate 78 is altogether different, the same shell but differently portrayed.//Provenance: Lucy Portman the gift of James Buck Esq. 1801 on free endpaper and a manuscript note: Bought at Sotheby's sale april /29.//See William Healey Dall, 'Thomas Martyn and the Universal Conchologist', Proceedings of the United States National Museum, vol. XXIX, pp. 415-432 (Washington 1905), and 'Supplementary Notes ...', idem, vol. XXXIII, pp. 185-192 (Washington 1907).//cf Ferguson I 4,40; Forbes I 79, 80, 175, 176; Nissen ZBI, 2728.

An Enquiry into the Principal Phaenomena of Sounds and Musical Strings

Dublin: Printed by Joseph Hill, at the College Printing-House, 1784. First edition. rebound in brown cloth lettered in gilt, all edges marbled. Title page dust soiled and relined on paper, terminal leaf also dust soiled, very slight foxing to a few preliminary and terminal leaves, else very good. Octavo. Illustrated with fold out plate (a little fragile in one fold) and "Table of Notes produces by a Single String of an Aeolian Lyre" Matthew Young (1750 - 1800) was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and he also taught there. He took orders in 1775 and was conferred the bishopric of Confert and Kilmacduagh by Lord Cornwallis in 1798. He was a musician, an enthusiastic botanist and somewhat of an artist. Young spent several years working on a commentary to Newton's "Principia"; in this volume he "endeavoured to vindicate the 47th prop. B.2, of Newton's Principia from the objections which have been made against it; as it appears to me to be the only true principle on which the phaenomena of the pulses of air can be explained. ....and have enquired with some minuteness into the nature of the vibrations of elastic fibres, a part of natural philosophy which seems to be more fertile in consequences than has hitherto been supposed, since the ingenious wirtings of Harley and Priestly on that subject. ..." -from the Advertisement.

A topographical map of the Republick of Genua taken from the celebrated Spanish map by Chaffrion with many additions & improvements, 1784

Genova 1784 - Acquaforte e bulino, 1784, firmata in basso a sinistra.

Esemplare in ottime condizioni. L. Lago, Theatrum Adriae, p. 303 n. 375. Map from "Atlante Novissimo" printed in Venice between 1776 and 1785.

Prijs: ?485,-.

Qasim or Yusuf Bisciano, both of whom Golius met in 1623 (Juynboll 128, Weigers 67), then he must have kept his notes in scrinuis until the publication of Giggeius in 1632.         The Death of Captain Cook. To the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of Great Britain & c. This Plate representing The Death of Captain Cook is humbly inscribed. By their Lordship's most obedient and devoted Servant, John Webber

London: W. Byrne, No. 79 Titchfield Street & J. Webber, No. 312 Oxford St., 1784. The separately published image by Webber of one of the iconic images of the 18th century. Cook, already a successful navigator, was immortalized after his death at the hands of Hawaiian natives at Karakakoa Bay. Cook had spent two months on the Big Island in 1779 and was well received, the natives believing he was a god. When he was forced to return due to a damaged mast, he was viewed as a mortal who had already sorely stretched the supplies of the Hawaiians. It is also thought that his handling of the natives was uncharacteristically brusque, leading to conjecture that this consummate traveler's judgment was somehow impaired. Copper engraving, published as the Act Directs 1st Jan. 1784, by J. Webber, No. 312, Oxford Street, and W. Byrne, No. 19, Titchfield Street, London. 22 3/4 x 18 1/4" image size. A very crisp impression on laid, watermarked paper. Without the impression mark, with an archival border added to aid in framing. A very nice copy of an important separately published engraving.

With 7 engraved plates, woodcut headpieces, and numerous tables. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spines, corners and edges worn; sporadic browning, otherwise a very good set. First edition of this valuable work on comets. The text is divided into four parts: a history of astronomy dating from ancient Babylon and Egypt through the eighteenth century; a catalogue of all the comets observed since antiquity with orbital elements of 166 for which paths had been computed (50 by Pingré himself); cometary returns and their physical effects upon the earth; and the methods for computing cometary orbits. For the significance of this monumental work see Colin A. Ronan's article in DSB, where he notes that as recently as 1950, it was officially recommended as a source book on cometary information. Pingré (1711-96) was an eminent professor of astronomy at the Rouen Academy of Sciences whose notable contributions include examining the measurement of an arc of the meridian made 80 years before by Jean Picard, and observations of the transit of Venus in 1761 and 1769.

Paris: Chez Moutard, 1784. Ce n'est pas une édition bilingue. Texte en français uniquement, pas en anglais. This is not a bilingual edition. Text in French only, not in English. First octavo edition? Bound in later half-calf in an attractive mottled brown pattern, the hubbed spine with crisp gilt-stamped morocco label. The boards in a matching marbled brown and gold paper. Generally unbumped spine head and tail, with moderately rubbed corners. The binding is quite clean. Strong hinges. Text block firmly bound in. 8.25 x 5.5 inches. Lovely pastedowns and opposite FEPs in a Victorian-inspired swirled pattern of pink, blue, yellow and beige. With [vi] and 80 numbered pages. Antique laid paper, rag content. Wide margins, with running commentary in small italic font along the fore-edges. Handsome vignettes to the title pages, handsome head-piece following. Green ribbon page marker. Light soiling along several of the page edges. Else a very clean copy. Very Good. Confusing bibliographically. Collates the same as Norman Library M125, which states "First octavo edition?" (See Crabtree 40, which lists the Bonnefoy work as 98 pp.) It is likely that an earlier owner had intended for the binder to combine both works, but the binder erred and omitted the Bonnefoy. See Crabtree 31 for the background and impact of the Rapport.. Half-Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Neuchatel: De l'Imprimerie de la Societe Typographique, 1784. [4],314,[2]pp. Modern quarter calf and marbled boards, the half-title and leaf of ads bound in. Some very minor tanning, a few spots to fore-edge, otherwise a very good, crisp copy. Second edition, revised and enlarged, of this scarce novel. Originally published in 1767, and presented as a literal translation into French of Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Pfeil's utopian novel, DER WILDEMAN, the text is now presented as a work by Mercier himself (and is so treated by at least one bibliographer). This novel relates to events in the Americas, particularly among the CHEBUTOIS in Peru, colored by the ideas of Rousseau, et al., and the view of the "savage" man as the moral superior of the "civilized" man. Mercier was a prolific dramatist and romancier, best known for the widely reprinted L'AN DEUX MILLE QUATRE CENT QUARANTE ("Londres" 1771), which earned for him the appellation of "the father of the modern utopia" - Trousson. The advert. leaf is a subscription notice for an eight volume collected edition of his dramatic works. PALAU 165160.

Mai 1785 in seiner Vaterstadt. O. geehrt.         The Death of Captain James Cook by the Indians of O,why,ee, one of the Sandwich Islands

London: G. Carter, 1784. Proof. A proof after letters of the most beautiful depiction of the death of Captain James Cook. The artist, George Carter, was not an eyewitness to the events in Hawaii, but his imagery and care in reconstructing the event places it as the most moving depiction of the event. Long a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and an accomplished portrait and historical painter, the tragedy of Cook's death on 14 February 1779 was an ideal subject for his talents. His depiction is vivid, showing Cook standing on the shoreline facing his attackers, holding his rifle as a club. The detailed portraits of the Hawaiians and the English seaman are done with great intensity and variety and number more than 30 individuals. In this effort, he was aided by John Hall, who engraved the portrait of Cook, and the other figures were engraved by I. Thornthwaite. The landscape was engraved by S. Smith. Carter painted the image in 1781 and helped to produce the print with the print makers Sayer and Bennet in 1784. The publishing line reads, "London, Published as the Act Directs by G. Carter of Margaret St. ... Cavendish Square and Messrs. Sayer & Bennet in Fleet St." The artist and engravers line, while somewhat indistinct, follows this - "G. Carter pinxit; S. Smith engraved the Landscape; J. Hall engraved the Portrait of Captain Cook; the figures by I. Thornthwaite." We believe this image to be a proof for the following reasons- the simplified design of type used in the engraving of the title; the text of the publishing information matching that of the 1st edition but without the date of Jany. 1st, 1784; the text of the artist/engravers line matching that of the 1st edition, but appearing very faintly; the intensity of the image and a faint "Pr....." in the bottom right margin of the print. The style of type used for the title is distinctly different than the first edition, which was published "Jany. 1st, 1784." In this edition, the engraving of the title is quite unsophisticated, and differs from the first edition significantly, which is more highly decorated, with four or five hatch marks on the letters DEATH, JAMES and COOK. The style of this print's title matches that of a copy held in the British Museum. (Call #Oc2006,Prt.140). Unfortunately, the BM print is missing the publishing line and much of the bottom margin. The State Library of New South Wales holds the first edition, with the publishing line identical to this print, with the publishing date of Jany. 1st, 1784 (Call # a1528432). The copy held by the National Library of Australia (PIC Drawer 7452 #U3051 NK4835) erroneously states that their print is a first edition; the publication line reads "Published 18th April, 1791, by ROBT. SAYER, No. 53, Fleet Street, London. The presence of a faint "Pr....." in the bottom right margin confirms our suspicions. Beddie lists 5 issues of the print. These vary slightly in the size of the printed image and publication dates. This copy of the image measures 16 7/8 x 23 1/4". However, slight variations in measuring devices could account for some of these differences and we don't regard the measurements as definitive of one edition over another. Beddie 2566 Jany 1st, 1784, 16 3/4 x 23 3/8"; Beddie 2567 Feby 1 1784, 17 x 23 1/2"; Beddie 2568 as 'another' measuring 16 3/4 x 23 1/4; Beddie 2569 'The Same' publish'd 12 May 1794 by Laurie & Whittle, 16 15/16 x 23 7/16"; Beddie 2570 'The Same', Proof before letters, 16 15/16 x 23 7/16". Image size 16 7/8 x 23 1/4". Small margins, trimmed within the plate mark, laid on archival tissue, some small sections of margin on the right side added but not affecting the printed surface, title engraved in an unsophisticated style, the publication line a bit rubbed and trimmed close, the artist/ engravers line indistinct but not rubbed. No publication date listed after Fleet St. (the 1st edition was published with the date Jany. 1st 1784 after "Fleet St.". A proof copy of a print that is a notable rarity.

Londres; et se trouve à Paris: Pissot, 1784. Octavo, woodcut vignette on title, early inscribed attribution 'Par Mr de Péméyea'; contemporary French quarter calf. First edition of this antiquarian utopia set in Minoan Crete, chronicling the reconciliation of all strata of society. The success of this novel by the Professeur d'éloquence at the Royal College at la Flèche led to several editions within a few years. Like so many books of the imaginary voyage tradition, this work takes Fénélon's Télémaque as its template, and has a similarly socialist distrust of private property and the evils of slavery.
