Londres: T.P. Capel, 1784. Octavo, completely uncut, in fine condition except that the original marbled wrappers are loose and defective revealing French printed waste used in the binding. " First edition: the fictional discovery and translation of an ancient travel account used to mask a political satire. The London imprint is probably a disguise since the binding shows the use of French printed waste as strengthening. Published only five years before the revolution, the subterfuge is understandable. In one of the most disingenuous prefaces in the imaginary voyage tradition, the author proffers a wonderfully diverse raft of excuses as to the integrity of the edition, which apparently only exists as an imprecise manuscript in 'mauvais latin' - a problem which the eponymous editor gleefully compounds with his own revisions. The work itself turns out to be the history of Melés, King of Lydie, and chronicles his extensive travels through his own kingdom, which proved the happy notion that everything the king has learnt in the schools and salons is quite useless, and that it is only through travel and experience that the true nature of his realm will become apparent. Lydie is clearly France, and the catalogue of abuses that the king discovers have direct relevance to pre-revolutionary France: the impositions on trade, the systems of privilege and their rank abuse, and the censorship of dissent.

ALMANACH DES GRACES, ETRENNES EROTIQUES CHANTANTES, DEDIE ET PRESENTE A MADAME COMTESSE D'ARTOIS, PAR M.C.

Paris chez Cailleau -1788 & 1790-1793 1784 - 9 volumes of this scarce work all in wrappers (somewhat worn but probably as issued with a view to binding) and then bound in unusual near contemporary slip cases with orange and blue watercolour patterns over the boards and labels in red and black ink or watercolour. 9 engraved frontispieces by Marillier, Monet and Le Jeune. Text uncut as issued. Some spotting to the frontispieces otherwise nice. It is believed the work continued to be issued into the early nineteenth century but here are the first 9 years. The year 1789 may not have been published because of the French revolution but the vendor is unsure of accuracy of this assumption. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A Bordeaux: Chez Michel Racle, 1784. - xxiv, 356 pp. Contemporary full leather. Piece missing at bottom of spine. Rubbed along joints. Split along bottom 1" of rear joint. Errata--printed on pp. xxiii-xxiv--have been entered in ink into the specified places in the text. Piece torn from upper and side margin of 353/354, with loss of page number in upper margin on p. 353 (or maybe the page number is under the piece of paper that has been patched into the top margin). Written on verso of rear flyleaf: "Madame Ducoudrai tante de Madame Countanceau." First Edition. "Mme Coutanceau has also done something to help herself, figuring out, as had her aunt [Madame du Coudray] nearly thirty years ago, that a printed book would enhance her status in the eyes of male practitioners. . . . She wrote up a short manuscript of her lessons, asking that her textbook [offered here] be published with the approval of the Academy of Bordeaux to further bolster her position. She also insisted that it be distributed, at the intendant's expense, to her past, present, and future student. . . . "She makes a strong case for keeping the profession of midwifery exclusively female, refusing to let it fall irretrievably into male hands. . . . We get a hint here that Mme Coutanceau has tapped into a level of repressed female anger that her aunt did not acknowledge and that might explain her more proprietary, feminist view of her profession. . . . Birthing is women's work, and that is that" (Nina Gelbart, The King's Midwife. A History and Mystery of Madame du Coudray, pp. 247-48). Madame Coutanceau's life and work are discussed at length by Nina Gelbart. Madame du Coudray "adopted" and raised Madame Coutanceau (hence the handwritten notation in this book that Madame de Coudray was the "aunt" of Madame Coutanceau). Just as Madame du Coudray received a royal "brevet" to instruct midwives, so did Madame Coutanceau as Madame du Coudray's heir.         The Death of Captain Cook. To the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of Great Britain &c. This Plate representing The Death of Captain Cook is humbly inscribed. By their Lordship's most obedient and devoted Servant, John Webber

London:: J. Webber,. 1784.. The separately published image by Webber of one of the iconic images of the 18th century. Cook, already a successful navigator, was immortalized after his death at the hands of Hawaiian natives at Karakakoa Bay. Cook had spent two months on the Big Island in 1779 and was well received, the natives believing he was a God. When he was forced to return due to a damaged mast, he was viewed as a mortal who had already sorely stretched the supplies of the Hawaiians. It is also thought that his handling of the natives was uncharacteristically brusque, leading to conjecture that this consummate traveler's judgment was somehow impaired. Copper engraved print, published as the Act directs 1st Jan. 1784, by J. Webber, No. 312, Oxford Street, and W. Byrne, No. 19, Titchfield Street, London. 24 x 18 3/4" impression mark. Old fold on top left corner nicely flattened, couple of marginal tears into impression mark but not into plate. A very crisp impression. Laid, watermarked paper.

(192x120 mm). [8], 236 pp. Half-title, 8 folding engraved plates by Sellier after Fossier. Contemporary quarter calf, spine gilt. Somewhat browned and foxed, half title stronger). ---- Dibner 92; Horblit 47; Sparrow 93; Norman 1021-1022, Ward & Carozzi, Geology Emerging, 1984: no. 1020; Wilson, History of Mineral Collecting, 1994: 53-6. - FIRST EDITION of the work that laid the foundation for the mathematical theory of crystal structure. Often thought of as the founder of crystallography, Hauy proposed the idea of the crystal molecule and recognized that, based on the discontinuity principle, there are limited varieties of a crystal species. (Dibner). Haüy's first printed book, this work was instrumental in establishing a solid foundation on which modern theories of crystal structure rest. In it, Haüy brought together the advances in crystallography made by Romé de l'Isle, Bergman and others into a coherent structural theory, based on the structural unit, the "molecule constituante" (later renamed by him to "molecule integrante"). Haüy's model depicted crystals as built up out of these molecular units which were polyhedral in form. Haüy also theorized a common "nucleus" or "primitive form" for all crystals of the same "species." This primative form was often revealed by cleavage of a crystal symmetrically along its angles and edges. Haüy's theory of crystal structure changed little in its essentials during the remainder of his career, which went on for almost forty years after the publication of the Essai. (A. Skalweit: Bene(c)kendorf(f), C. F. von, in: Neue Deutsche Biographie 2 (1955), S. 42). - Auch innen schönes, nahezu fleckenfreies Exemplar. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean . for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere . performed under the Direction of Captains Cook, Clerke, and Gore, in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Discovery; in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780

      W. & A. Strahan for G. Nicol and T. Cadell, London 1784 - Text: contemporary tree calf, expertly rebacked to style, the flat spines divided into six compartments by double fillets enclosing a neo-classical roll, red/brown morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, green morocco label with onlaid disc of red/brown morocco with volume number, the remaining compartments elaborately tooled in gilt with stylised foliage cornerpieces around various large centrally-place tools; Atlas: expertly bound to style in half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spine elaborately tooled in gilt uniform to the text. A fine set of the first edition of the official account of Cook's third and last voyage: a cornerstone among travel and voyage literature on the exploration of Hawaii and the northwest coast of America, Canada and Alaska. This copy particularly desirable with the plates in the atlas uncut. "The famous accounts of Captain Cook's three voyages form the basis for any collection of Pacific books. In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors had done together. He was really the first scientific navigator and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge" (Hill). "Cook's third voyage was organized to seek the Northwest Passage and to return [the islander] Omai to Tahiti. Officers of the crew included William Bligh, James Burney, James Colnett, and George Vancouver. John Webber was appointed artist to the expedition. After calling at Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society Islands, the expedition sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands, which Cook named the Sandwich Islands. Cook charted the American west coast from Northern California through the Bering Strait as far north as latitude 70 degrees 44 minutes before he was stopped by pack ice. He returned to Hawaii for the winter and was killed in an unhappy skirmish with the natives over a boat. Charles Clarke took command and after he died six months later, the ships returned to England under John Gore. Despite hostilities with the United States and France, the scientific nature of this expedition caused the various governments to exempt these vessels from capture. The voyage resulted in what Cook judged his most valuable discovery - the Hawaiian Islands" (Hill). Beddie 1543; Forbes Hawaiian National Bibliography , 85; Hill (2004) 361; Lada-Mocarski 37; cf.         A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean; Undertaken by the Command of his Majesty, for Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere; performed under the direction of Captains Cook, Clerke and Gore, in the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779 and 1780

John Stockdale, Scatherd and 1784 London - 4 volumes: xii+370 pages with frontispiece, foldout map and 17 plates; xii+359 pages and 14 plates; xii400 pages 16 plates (one folding) and 1 folding map;xii+310+[6 ad] pages with 4 plates and index. Octavo (8" x 5 1/4") issued in full leather with raised spine bands and gilt lettering to spine. (Beddie:1784) Abridged edition. This a copious, comprehensive and satisfactory abridgement of the third voyage written by Captain J Cook and Captain J King. In the course of his first two voyages, Cook circumnavigated the globe twice, sailed extensively into the Antarctic, and charted coastlines from Newfoundland to New Zealand. Following these achievements, Cook's third voyage was organized to seek an efficient route from England to southern and eastern Asia that would not entail rounding the Cape of Good Hope. The search for such a Northwest (or Northeast) Passage had been on the agenda of northern European mariners and merchants since the beginning of European expansion in the late fifteenth century. England's growing economic and colonial interests in India in the later eighteenth century provided the stimulus for the latest exploration for this route. Cook, again in command of the Resolution, was to approach the Northwest Passage from the Pacific accompanied by a second ship, the Discovery, captained by Charles Clerke. The ships left England separately, regrouped at Cape Town, and continued on to Tasmania, New Zealand, and Tahiti. The expedition then sailed north and made landfall at Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands. Cook continued northward and charted the west coast of North America from Northern California as far as the Bering Strait. He returned to Hawaii for the winter and was killed in a skirmish with natives on February 14, 1779. Upon Cook's death, Clerke took command of the expedition but died six months later. The ships returned to England in 1780 under John Gore, who had commanded the Discovery after Cook's death. From start to finish, the voyage had lasted more than four years. Condition: Large folding map is bound upside down. spines renewed with original labels tipped onto spine, corners chipped and worn, volume four lacks last index leaf and subscriber's leaf through "J". All maps and plates present as called for. Over all a good to very good set. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The voyage took in Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society Islands, sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands, which Cook named the Sandwich Islands.         A LETTER FROM PHOCION TO THE CONSIDERATE CITIZENS OF NEW- YORK, ON THE POLITICS OF THE TIMES, IN CONSEQUENCE OF THE PEACE

Philadelphia: Robert Bell, 1784.. 15,[1]pp. Modern green half morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Light to moderate foxing and soiling. Very good. One of two Philadelphia editions of this influential political tract, after the first New York printing of the same year. Here Hamilton argues some of the points that were to become Federalist creed: compliance with the 1783 peace treaty with the British, an end to attacks on Tories and Tory property, and the submission of the states to the central authority of the United States. It is Hamilton's third political tract, his first two appearing in 1774 and 1775. "This impression contains, Letters on the stage, pp.13-15, and a List of books, 1 page, added by Robert Bell, and probably marks a second edition" - Evans. Scarce. EVANS 18515. No further reproduction by any means is permitted. </p><p>Only the most modern techniques and help from various private and public entities have made it possible to offer a series of "copies" of the Bible which could satisfy the requirements imposed by scientific research. The manuscript, after being unbound, has been reproduced on a series of negatives, which have been used at first for making a replica of the same dimensions (donated to the Abbey of San Salvatore for its Museum) , and then several smaller facsimiles for sale to libraries and individuals as well as a CD-Rom, allowing for a more widespread range of research, from the most simple to the most complex. </p><p>During the phases of the reproduction, carried out in the Laurentian Library, scholars from various disciplines and of different nationalities have been able to study the original, and deepen their codicological, liturgical, musicological, and art history research. As well, scientific analyses have been made of the colours of the miniatures. </p><p>With the collaboration of various professionals, from librarians to restorers, from biologists to chemists, research has been carried out institutionally with results contributing to the understanding of the codex, especially as regarding the vexed question of the ordering of the leaves belonging to the first gathering. In fact, it has been discovered that these folios were arranged in a sequence different than the one known until now. The &#39;new&#39; ordering corresponds to the one the leaves have had for the longest period of time until the manuscript&#39;s rebinding before 1784, the year in which it was fully described by the Laurentian Librarian Angelo Maria Bandini. This arrangement is carefully followed in the reduced-size facsimiles. </p> ; 33.5 cm x 24 cm x 15.5 cm .

        Branche de Lilas (Lilac Branch)

Paris 1784 - In the early 18th century, France turned away from imperial aspirations to focus on more personal and pleasurable pursuits. As political life and private morals relaxed, the change was mirrored by a new style in art, one that was more intimate, and decorative. Louis XIV's desire to glorify his dignity and the magnificence of France had been well served by the monumental and formal qualities of most seventeenth-century French art. But members of the succeeding court began to decorate their elegant homes in a lighter, more delicate manner. This new style has been known since the last century as "rococo," from the French word, rocaille, for rock and shell garden ornamentation. First emerging in the decorative arts, the rococo emphasized pastel colors, sinuous curves, and patterns based on flowers, vines, and shells. Painters turned to the sensual surface delights of color and light, and from weighty religious and historical subjects to more intimate scenes. The styles of representation range from the mildly stylized but naturalistic to the intensely fantastical, verging on the surreal. This style would soon give way to one that adhered to the austerity and democratic spirit of the revolutionaries at the end of the century. This original hand-colored engraving, &#147;Branche de Lilas&#148; from the collection of fifty-nine engravings from Jacques Charton&#146;s, &#147;Collection de plantes etrangeres en fleurs, fruits, corail et coquillages&#148; is a splendid example of the French decorative arts produced in Paris in 1784, just previous to the French Revolution. This engraving, most likely executed for porcelain designs, measures 17.5&#148; x 11.25&#148; and is in very good condition with some color runoff from being bound and a few light foxing marks around the edges. This engraving shows a finely detailed image of a lilac branch. Lilacs are are deciduous shrubs or small trees, in this engraving colored in white with a rich green stem and leaves.

This engraving, most likely executed for porcelain designs, measures 17.25&#148; x 11.25&#148; and is in good condition with foxing and staining throughout, light pencil marks of the left and bottom margins and light color runoff from being bound. The whimsical look of this engraving is heightened by the curvature of the honeysuckle plant's pale pink flowers and rich green stems. The engraving is well colored and finely detailed and shoes the great still of the artist.

.         ADS ("La Comtesse du Barry").

No place, 10 Oct. 1784 (or before). - Oblong 12mo (90 x 145 mm). 1 p. Addressed to Monsieur Caillebeaux, a promissory note for 2,000 livres to be paid to Monsieur Gilbert "marshand de toile a Versailles". - One of the last of the big-spenders of the Ancien régime, the Comtesse du Barry was at the epicentre of the cult of extravagance at Versailles and her quest for gowns of the utmost luxury has entered the realms of legend. Here we find her submitting a promissory note to M. Caillebeaux &#145;Controlleur des ventes de la ville&#146; in favour of a Versailles cloth merchant, for the enormous sum of 2,000 livres. The document is signed on the verso by the merchant Gilbert. Though the Comtesse must have issued thousands of these notes (a good number survive) they are usually only signed by her and are rarely entirely in her hand. This one is entirely in her autograph. - Already a practised courtesan, Jeanne Bécu had been installed at Versailles in 1769 and quickly became the object of Louis XV&#146;s infatuation and his official mistress until his death in 1774. She was showered with gifts by the king, until the disaster of the diamond necklace ordered for her in 1772, at a cost of two million livres, which brought about the tangled web of deceit and extortion that fatally damaged the French monarchy in the following decade. The Comtesse du Barry was beheaded during the Terror. - Provenance: Charavay, Paris. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
