The History of the Old and New Testament, Interspersed with Moral and Instructive Reflections

Philadelphia: M. Steiner for C. Talbot, 1784. First Philadelphia edition. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. vi, (ii), 436pp. (but p. 426 is mispaginated as 536). Contemporary full calf. Spine with gilt rules and red lettering piece, gilt. Two bookplates of a former owner. Old neat hinge repair, wear to corners and spine tips, some soiling and foxing but basically a very good copy in original binding. Important on several fronts. This is first book printed by America's first Catholic publisher, Christopher Talbot, 'late of Dublin'. Talbot later went on to co-found the Pennsylvania Herald. The title page states this is the third edition, but it is unclear where the earlier editions were published, or whether the statement represents an edition in English or in the original French. This is the second American printing of this title; it was originally printed in Baltimore in 1780; this is the first Philadelphia printing. It was important also to the Catholic community of the time as the first Catholic edition of Scripture, the Douai-Rheims version, was not printed in America until 1790 (see Darlow and Moule, the entry after 949.) The list of subscribers includes John Carroll. Rare.

        Fruits de la Chine

Paris 1784 - Jacques Charton Illustrated plate from Collection de plantes etrangeres en fleurs, fruits, corail et coquillages Paris: 1784 Hand-colored copperplate engraving 17” x 11”; 22 1/2” x 18” framed Framed in museum quality frame, mounted with archival materials with uv plexiglass In the early 18th century, France turned away from imperial aspirations to focus on more personal and pleasurable pursuits. As political life and private morals relaxed, the change was mirrored by a new style in art, one that was more intimate, and decorative. Louis XIV’s desire to glorify his dignity and the magnificence of France had been well served by the monumental and formal qualities of most seventeenth-century French art. But members of the succeeding court began to decorate their elegant homes in a lighter, more delicate manner. This new style has been known since the last century as rococo, from the French word, rocaille, for rock and shell garden ornamentation. First emerging in the decorative arts, the rococo emphasized pastel colors, sinuous curves, and patterns based on flowers, vines, and shells. Painters turned to the sensual surface delights of color and light, and from weighty religious and historical subjects to more intimate scenes. These original hand-colored engravings from a collection of 59 from Jacques Charton’s, Collection de plantes etrangeres en fleurs, fruits, corail et coquillages are splendid examples of the French decorative arts produced in Paris in 1784, just previous to the French Revolution. These lovely engravings, most likely executed for porcelain designs, show a variety of exotic natural history subjects, mainly flowering plants and shells, accompanied by animals or insects, some with accompanying background vignettes. The style of representation ranges from the mildly stylized but naturalistic to the intensely fantastical, verging on the surreal such as, a selection of “fruits of the sea” hanging from the branches of a plant emerging from a seashell. This style would soon give way to one that adhered to the austerity and democratic spirit of the revolutionaries at the end of the century.

An Annapolis Report of the Continental Congress Deciding Legislative Terms Under the Articles of Confederation

Worcester, MA 1784 - Newspaper. Thomas's Massachusetts Spy, Or, The Worcester Gazette, Worcester, Mass., May 13, 1784. 4 pp., 11 x 18 1/2 in. With a "Liberty Defended from Tyranny" masthead designed by Paul Revere, page 1 features advertisements, legal notices (the first of which is Harvard College requesting immediate payment of debts, "as money is much wanted," as well as stage coach schedules and a lengthy list of winning lottery numbers.Page 2 features a lengthy letter on taxes, lands, and the public debt "The people are seldom wrong when they are rightly informed, and fully comprehend the whole system offered to their contemplation: But they are too frequently deceived by wicked and designing men, or led a fruitless round by the low ambition of a few, who court their favor by means disgraceful to honesty. Hence arises the many county Conventions, to complain of those grievances which are inseparable from an expensive war; and which all the nations of the earth have experienced in a much greater degree than we do; and which nothing but industry and frugality, joined to a proper subordination to the laws of a free and equal government, can redress. While the people are rendered uneasy by taxes, which are far from being an extravagant price for the freedom of they have obtained, it is much better for each good citizen, to endeavor an easement of the necessary burdens of the day, than to foment the uncomfortable and self tormenting spirit that prevails."Also, observations of a hydrogen-filled balloon flight in Oxford, England, as well as a report of the acts of the Portsmouth, New Hampshire General Assembly, including protection of anadromous fishes such as shad and salmon, as well as an act allowing John Paul Jones to proceed with a lawsuit.Page 3 includes reports of the Continental Congress in Annapolis invoking Article V of the Articles of Confederation to require states to appoint legislators and set legislative terms, as well as a report of Major-General Baron von Steuben's resignation, and " a great majority of votes for his Excellency John Hancock, Esq., as Governour" in Massachusetts.Page 4 contains an installment of the serialized "History of America" by William Robertson, D.D.

EXTRACT FROM THE DEFINITIVE TREATY OF PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP...CONCLUDED AT PARIS THE 10th DAY OF FEBRUARY, 1763...EXTRACT FROM THE DEFINITIVE TREATY OF PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP...SIGNED AT VERSAILLES THE 3d DAY OF SEPTEMBER, 1783...A PROCLAMATION. GEORGE THE THIRD...TO ALL OUR LOVING SUBJECTS...[caption titles]

Grenada: Printed by John Spahn, [1784?].. [4]pp. on a folio sheet folded once to quarto size. Splitting along most of the fold, but the two leaves not detached. Stained along upper edge, lightly tanned. Good. In a half morocco box. A very rare Grenada imprint, printing extracts from the treaties which concluded the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, especially those portions pertaining to Grenada, and to Britain's guarantee of freedom of religion in her colonies. This proclamation was printed in Grenada by John Spahn, and although undated was likely produced in 1784, following the news of Britain's re-acquisition of Grenada after the Treaty of Paris concluding the American Revolution. Four articles are reprinted from the Treaty of 1763 ending the French and Indian War: Article 4, passing all of Canada over to the British, and ensuring freedom of religion to the former French subjects; Article 9, ceding Grenada, the Grenadines, St. Vincent, Dominica, and Tobago to the British and ensuring the same religious freedoms as those guaranteed to the former French subjects in Canada; and two articles pertaining to administrative matters. Four articles are also reprinted from the 1783 Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolution: Article VII through which Britain ceded St. Lucia and Tobago to the French, and in which the French guaranteed religious freedom to the Protestant inhabitants of the islands; Article VIII, which gave Grenada, the Grenadines, St. Vincent's, Dominica, St. Christopher's, Nevis, and Montserrat, and under which the British guaranteed religious freedom; and two other articles addressing legal and administrative questions. The third item reprinted is a proclamation by George III, "given at Our Town of Fort Royal," in 1764 proclaims the sovereignty of British law on Grenada and the other recently acquired islands: "the laws of Great Britain are in force in this Island, as far as the Nature and Circumstances of the Colony will permit; and that all other Jurisdictions, Offices, Commissions and Proceedings for the future, not founded on those Our Laws of England, are hereby declared to be absolutely determined, utterly void, and totally abolished." The Proclamation authorizes the calling of a General Assembly for the islands, and gives the Governor General the power to institute laws and courts on the island until the legislature convenes. Printing on Grenada began as early as 1765 and continued through the French occupation of 1779-83. OCLC carries only one listing for John Spahn as a printer on Grenada - as publisher of the ST. GEORGE'S CHRONICLE AND GRENADA GAZETTE in 1800. Although the present extracts are undated, it is most likely that they were printed shortly after the British regained control of Grenada in 1784. This document is not listed on OCLC, nor are any Grenada imprints from the 1780s. A rare collection of treaty extracts carrying important information about the political and religious state of affairs in Grenada and the West Indies. Due to the humid climate in the area, 18th-century imprints from the West Indies are virtually unobtainable.

A VOYAGE TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN. UNDERTAKEN BY THE COMMAND OF HIS MAJESTY, FOR MAKING DISCOVERIES IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE.

Dublin. 1784. - Three volumes. [8],xcviii,421; [14],549; [11],559pp. plus frontispiece portrait, eighteen folding maps and charts, seven folding plates, and one folding table. Contemporary calf, spines gilt with leather labels. Extremities lightly worn, corners slight wear to spine end and hinges, but a very good set. First Dublin edition of the official account of Cook's third and final voyage, including text on the exploration of Hawaii and the west coasts of America, Canada, and Alaska. The third voyage was undertaken to continue the British survey of the Pacific, but most particularly to search for a northwest passage from the western side. Sailing in 1776, the expedition called at Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society islands, then sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands. They then thoroughly explored and charted the Northwest Coast from the Bering Straits along the coast of Alaska and Canada, as far south as present northern California. Returning to Hawaii in 1778, the expedition was at first received warmly; but after departing and being forced to return to repair a mast, trouble developed which led to a tragic series of events in which the great navigator was killed. However, the expedition pressed on under Clerke and then Gore, and explored the coasts of Siberia and Kamchatka before returning to England in 1780. Forbes calls this work "arguably the single most important book on the Hawaiian islands." The Dublin edition was issued both with and without the plates, and this copy is the issue with the plates, which is considerably more desirable and difficult to come by. HOWES C729a. SABIN 16250.         Exposition exacte ou tableaux anatomiques en taillès-douces des différentes parties du corps humain.

Etienne Charpentier 1784 - Tall folio (385 mm.). The entire book, including the text, was printed from engraved copper plates – 60 plates (an illustrated title page plate, 29 anatomical plates and 30 calligraphic letterpress plates). Bound in a contemporary or near contemporary binding with calf spine and decorative paste paper boards - rubbed, edges shelf worn, old ink stain on rear cover. Both the upper portion of the spine and the tail cap are carefully restored. Board corners are neatly repaired. Interior is very clean with an occasional miniscule spot of marginal foxing. Francois-Michel Disdier (1708-1781) was a professor of surgery and a drawing master at the Academy of Painting in Paris. His "Tableaux anatomiques," a deluxe anatomy book for physicians, was first published in 1758. Many of the plates were done by Crepy and Charpentier – some after the style of Vesalius and others following Eustachi. The engraved title page, designed by François Bouchet, depicts students in an anatomy class studying a cadaver. The whole scene is framed in ornate baroque style. [Blake NLM, p. 122; Heirs of Hippocrates 894 – listing 1778 edition; Hirsch II, p. 190]. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        A Man of Oonalashka

London 1784 - This outstandingly detailed copper-plate engraving, A Man of Oonalashka, reveals the traditional dress of the natives of the Aleutian Islands, in the Northern Pacific Ocean. Measuring 20.75" x 12.25", this engraving is in excellent condition with evidence of previous repair in the margins. The man illustrated wears a tradition head covering and has nose and labret piercings. Captain James Cook (1728-1779) was a British navigator, explorer and cartographer with the Royal Navy. In 1766, Cook began what would be three separate voyages to the Pacific, studying, charting and documenting the Pacific and island inhabitants. The engravings and images produced from these great eighteenth-century voyages presented the world with scientific and ethnographic data, pictorial representations, and cartographic discoveries of the pacific from its northern reaches to its southern extremities for the very first time. For his third and final voyage beginning July 12th 1776, Captain Cook commanded HMS Resolution in search of the Northwest Passage. This voyage was different to his previous two, however. Britain was at war as its American colonies fought for their own sovereignty. The Declaration of Independence had been signed on the Fourth of July, just eight days before the Resolution sailed, and the already perilous journey was now also in danger of capture from American pirates ready to hold the vessels hostage on their voyage home. It is notable that Benjamin Franklin, American Minister to the court of France, wrote a letter requesting free passage for Cook, as a mark of respect for the man himself and also in recognition of the importance of the journey's mission.

Salomoni,, Rom, 1784 - Kupferstich. 31,5 x 20 cm. Druckspiegel: 27 x 14 cm. Innenansicht der Überreste des Kolosseums in Rom. Tafel Nr.
