        Cactus

      - Daniel Carthidge The Figures of Several Plants both Exotic, & of British Produce England, 1784 Watercolor Pper size approximately 14 1/8” x 87/8”; 24” x 19” framed This exquisite botanical watercolor, from a collection of thirteen, by the British artist Daniel Carthidge were the original studies for a volume of engravings intended to illustrate the exotic crops including fruits, teas and spices cultivated in areas throughout the West Indies and American Colonies under British possession. This suite of watercolors, executed in 1784, depict trees and plants that the English used on a daily basis, most notably tea, coffee, cinnamon, pepper, and lemons. Yet while such things were imported and readily available in England, few citizens really had any notion of the actual appearance of such plants. Other watercolors represent species that were more obscure to the British, including papayas and pineapples, which generally could not last for the long trip to England from the colonies. Many of the imported spices were not only praised for flavor, but for medicinal attributes, such as cinnamon used as a stimulant and astringent, as well as a food preserver, and ginger for its digestive attributes and aiding in warding off colds. Even after England lost its most important colony, America, the British Empire remained vast in the last decades of the 18th century. Many English artists looked for inspiration in the exotic flora and fauna of the more distant colonies, and the British populace provided a ready and eagerly curious market for such images. Carthidge’s striking interpretations of these exotic images satisfied such public appetite for knowledge of the far away colonies, and won him great acclaim in the process. Representing a selection of the prototypes he personally created for an engraved publication, titled, The Figures of Several Plants both Exotics & of British Produce, this original watercolor renders abundantly clear the reasons for Carthidge’s success.

Journal of the Senate of the State of New York, (Seventh Session, 1784)

New York: Printed by E. Holt, Printer to the State. 1784. First. First edition. Subtitle reads, "At their first Meeting of the Seventh Session, begun and holden at the City-Hall in the City of New York, on Tuesday, the sixth Day of January, 1784." Folio. Unbound and untrimmed as issued in folded sheets. Incomplete. Consists of pages 59-134, and pages 61-168: i.e., two distinct sets of separately paginated sheets, each set recording a unique account of the daily proceedings in March, April, and May of 1784. It thus appears that two printed accounts of the same proceedings: one "official," the other "secret," (not an uncommon practice at the time) are here mixed together. Scattered chipping to the page edges affecting the letterpress at the margins of only some of the outermost leaves of each set, else good or better. ESTC locates four copies of one edition only: "147,[1] pages." No variants are noted. Evans 18644, ESTC W33312. .

A GENERAL DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. ONE MAIN OBJECT OF WHICH, IS, TO ESTABLISH A PLAIN AND PERMANENT STANDARD OF PRONUNCIATION. TO WHICH IS PREFIXED A RHETORICAL GRAMMAR

Dublin: Printed by P. Wogan ... and P. Byrne, 1784.. [4],[16],[v]-lxix,[1]pp. followed by I2-3F4 [839pp]. Thick octavo (signed in 4s). Modern three quarter calf and marbled boards, raised bands, gilt label. Two early ink signatures on slightly creased title, another on blank verso of terminal leaf, corner of old binder's preliminary blank restored, some occasional spotting, foxing or soiling, light discoloration to a few upper margins; a good, sound copy. First Dublin edition, incorporating the dedication "To the Lords and Gentlemen of the Volunteer Assosiations [sic] of Ireland." The first edition appeared in London in 1780, supported by a substantial number of subscribers, among whom were Garrick and Boswell. The 16pp of subscribers to this edition is overwhelmingly, but not exclusively, Irish and among the exceptions are Benjamin Franklin (20 copies) and George Washington. Sheridan's DICTIONARY is counted among the earliest substantial accomplishments in the progress toward standards of pronunciation, and though this Dublin edition is somewhat abridged, it is rather uncommon and enjoys the identification with Sheridan's Irish birth and periods of residence.         A Journal of a voyage to the South Seas, in his Majesty's ship the Endeavour

London: C. Dilly and J. Phillips, 1784. Quarto, frontispiece portrait, double-hemisphere map and 27 engraved plates, all with contemporary handcolouring, with the uncommon errata slip; fine in full contemporary tree calf, joints split but quite firm. An exceptionally complete copy of the rare hand-coloured Parkinson, with the "Gomeldon" leaves. A superb tall copy in a fine contemporary binding of the wonderful handcoloured Parkinson, one of the most beautiful of any of the accounts of sailing with Cook, complete with the famous "Gomeldon" pages. The most desirable form in which this great book can appear: this is one of the extremely rare examples of the second and best edition of the work with all the engravings enhanced by very bold original handcolouring. This surprisingly bright and vivid colouring must have constituted a publisher's de luxe issue, and any such copy is very rare.Parkinson accompanied Cook on the first voyage as a draughtsman in the employ of Joseph Banks, and was one of many to die when the Endeavour called at Batavia on the way home. His effects were forwarded to his brother, who used them to publish the first edition of this work in 1773, much to the dismay of Banks. Despite the legal wrangling between Banks and the Parkinson family, the account is now recognised as the principal alternative account of Cook's first voyage and the most handsome of all the unofficial accounts of any of Cook's voyages. In 1784, the same year that the official account of Cook's third voyage account was published, this new and rather complicated edition was published with all manner of extra material: an additional appendix, a large double-hemisphere map showing the tracks of Cook's three voyages, a long résumé of the voyages of Byron, Wallis, Carteret and Bougainville, a summary of Cook's second and third voyages, and an explanatory note and postscript. This copy has a further claim because it includes the fullest possible suite of text, including the extremely rare and puzzling four-pages which print a letter from Parkinson written in Batavia to his cousin Jane Gomeldon, her reply, and a poem addressed by her to Parkinson on his impending return from the voyage (these four-pages have long intrigued collectors and bibliographers: for a discussion of their rarity and significance see the Kroepelien catalogue, the New Zealand National Bibliography, as well as work by Sir Maurice Holmes and Rodney Davidson among others, the last of whom described it as "an extremely rare variant which is probably one of the rarest items of Australiana..."). As discussed by Holmes in some detail, the Gomeldon pages seem to have been printed for inclusion in the first edition of 1773 but were not ready until after the book was sold and distributed. This is only the second time Hordern House have handled such a copy.

        Branche de Grenade d'Europe (rose)

Paris 1784 - Jacques Charton Illustrated plate from Collection de plantes etrangeres en fleurs, fruits, corail et coquillages Paris: 1784 Hand-colored copperplate engraving 17” x 11”; 22 1/2” x 18” framed Framed in museum quality frame, mounted with archival materials with uv plexiglass In the early 18th century, France turned away from imperial aspirations to focus on more personal and pleasurable pursuits. As political life and private morals relaxed, the change was mirrored by a new style in art, one that was more intimate, and decorative. Louis XIV’s desire to glorify his dignity and the magnificence of France had been well served by the monumental and formal qualities of most seventeenth-century French art. But members of the succeeding court began to decorate their elegant homes in a lighter, more delicate manner. This new style has been known since the last century as rococo, from the French word, rocaille, for rock and shell garden ornamentation. First emerging in the decorative arts, the rococo emphasized pastel colors, sinuous curves, and patterns based on flowers, vines, and shells. Painters turned to the sensual surface delights of color and light, and from weighty religious and historical subjects to more intimate scenes. These original hand-colored engravings from a collection of 59 from Jacques Charton’s, Collection de plantes etrangeres en fleurs, fruits, corail et coquillages are splendid examples of the French decorative arts produced in Paris in 1784, just previous to the French Revolution. These lovely engravings, most likely executed for porcelain designs, show a variety of exotic natural history subjects, mainly flowering plants and shells, accompanied by animals or insects, some with accompanying background vignettes. The style of representation ranges from the mildly stylized but naturalistic to the intensely fantastical, verging on the surreal such as, a selection of “fruits of the sea” hanging from the branches of a plant emerging from a seashell. This style would soon give way to one that adhered to the austerity and democratic spirit of the revolutionaries at the end of the century.

DESSEINS GRAVES PAR CHARLES JOSEPH GERLI, MILANOIS.

chez Joseph Galeazzi 1784 In folio gr.

        Pymah Tree
