Octavo (202 × 114 mm). Contemporary half roan, paper sides with simulated tree calf pattern, raised bands to spine forming compartments, tan morocco letterpiece to second, remaining compartments with fleurons enclosed by stylised rules gilt, all edges red, pastedowns decoratively hand-printed with floral pattern in red and green. Woodcut vignette title-page, headpiece and tailpiece, floral running-heads. From the library of the Piarist gymnasium in Vac, Hungary, with "Bibliothecae Vaciensis Sch. Piarum 1804" inked to title-page, discreet ink-stamp to verso, printed library label in Hungarian to front pastedown above recent monogram bookplate, pencilled manuscript shelfmark corrected in ink to front free endpaper with contemporary inked ownership inscription of one P. Alexü Szenczy to verso. Short (25 mm) crack to head of front joint, small hole to head of rear, tips bumped and worn, sides a little rubbed with a few small marks, contents toned as usual. A very good copy. First edition, second issue, the same year as the first, with the angel vignette headpiece on p. 3, and the staff-and-vine tailpiece on p. 222. Kant wrote his Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics as a clarification of the Critique of Pure Reason, which he believed to had been widely misunderstood on publication two years previously. It became one of Kant's most influential works and he incorporated much of it into the second edition of the Critique, itself now accepted as "Kant's great achievement [which] concluded finally the lines on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century" (PMM 226). An attractively bound copy of this highly important work, with an interesting Hungarian provenance.

[LETTER, SIGNED, FROM GENERAL GUY CARLETON TO GENERAL CLARKE, REGARDING DESERTERS AT THE CLOSE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR; TOGETHER WITH A DOCUMENT SIGNED BY GENERAL FREDERICK MACKENZIE ON THE SAME SUBJECT]

New York, 1783. Folio. Old fold lines. Minor soiling and wear. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth clamshell box, spine gilt. Letter, signed by Brigadier General Guy Carleton, written to Brigadier General Alured Clarke regarding clemency for deserters from the British Army at the end of the American Revolution; together with orders for General Clarke from Deputy Adjutant General Frederick Mackenzie, dated May 14th, to deny any deserters wishing to return to the ranks. At the time, Carleton, who was Commander in Chief of all British forces in North America, was overseeing the evacuation of the British forces and Loyalists from New York, a process that would last until November. He writes: "I enclose a copy of an order [not present] I have given here relative to deserters: Such as come in and surrender themselves to the officer commanding at any of our posts, shall be pardoned in like manner. You will take such measures for the transportation of the sick from Philadelphia to this place, as, from their numbers and other circumstances, you shall judge most convenient and adviseable, paying some attention to their own wishes." The order from General Mackenzie, however, is far less forgiving and countermands Carleton's order: "The Commander in Chief has so far pardoned several English deserters, as to allow them to return within the lines, and to send them home; but their dishonor is not done away. No regiment here shall receive them, nor shall they again serve in this army. 'Tis recommended to the soldiers of every British, and to the soldiers of every British American Corps, to kick all such rascals out of their quarters, should they have the impudence to come in among them."

ALOCUCION QUE END EL DIA VEINTE DE ENERO DEL AÑO MIL SETECIENTOS OCHENTA Y TRES, CUMPLEAÑOS DEL REY NUESTRO SEÑOR D. CAROLS III.

Manila: En la Imprenta del Seminario Eclesiastico, por Ignacio Ad-Vincula, 1783. - [2],23,[1]pp. Folio. Remnants of old plain, rice paper wrappers. Clearly was folded horizontally one time in the past. Two worm holes: one in lower margins, other in upper. Waterstain in lower margins; some other discoloration to pp. 19/20. Upper and lower outer corners rodent gnawed with small loss of paper. Because of brittle nature of paper, there are the expected short tear in some margins, including the inner one. After consecration and service in Spain, Sancho de Santa Justa arrived in Manila in 1767 to take up his duties as archbishop, which included overseeing the expulsion of the Jesuits. He was a native of Aragon and a member of the Society of Scholarum Piarum. In this address on the occasion of Charles III's 67th birthday, he expresses himself no friend of many of the Enlightenment's ideas but a staunch supporter of the King, his economic policies, and especially of the newly instituted practice of free commerce in the Spanish empire. On the other hand, he rails against England, its foreign commercial practices, and its ascension as a maritime powerhouse. As the title states, this was pronounced before "la Real Sociedad Patriotica de Manila." &c." The work is printed on "rice paper" (i.e., Asian paper probably from the mulberry tree) as was common in Manila during the period to ca. 1820. The typography is definitely provincial and plain, using only one decorative woodcut initial and no ornamentation on the title-page. The type is roman in a variety of sizes with a practice of using all capitals for emphasis. The press on which this work was printed had been that of the Jesuits until Archbishop Sancho de Santa Justa carried out the king's order and expelled them; he then appropriated the press for his private use, as here. What had been only the fourth press to operate in the Islands, now with a new name, became the fifth. Searches of NUC, WorldCat, and COPAC locate only five copies worldwide (three in the U.S., one in the U.K., one in Spain). . (35354) MEDINA, MANILA 317. RETANA, APARATO BIBLIOGRAFICO 379.

Two pay lists of the the officers belonging to the Garrison of Fort St Phillips, who are to receive

Minorca 1783 - Two single sheets. Folio. Signed in full by every officer. The first is titled: "No. 26 Pay List for additional Subsistence etc to the officers in st. Philips Castle, from 25 Dec. 1781 to 23 Feb. 1782." The second has written on the verso: " No. 136 Pay List to make up Subs. to Brevet Officer etc equal to the Rank where in they respectively serve in The Garrison of Fort St. Philips during the Siege, Decemb. 24 1781 - Dollars 4350-50." These two officer pay lists are signed by each of the 36 and 44 listed officers. They're a wonderful souvenir of the siege and, with a sample of every officer's signature, a valuable source for further research. The five month Siege of Minorca (August 19, 1781 - February 5, 1782) was a vital victory over England in the European theatre of the Revolutionary War. Throughout most of the eighteenth century English possession of the island was of real strategic importance, from its deep-water harbor, the Royal Navy could launch attacks against the Mediterranean fleets of Spain, France and Italy.

[8], 750, [24], [8], 136 pp.; illus.. 1783 In addition to the usual herbal content given in abundant detail abundantly illustrated, Lonicer provides sections on distilling and pickling, whaling and beekeeping, gardening (including transplanting and grafting trees), animals and birds (some mythical), fish, precious metals or stones, and rubber and ink. => Ehrhart's appendix expands Lonicer's work with updated information. First published in 1557, this, the last edition of Lonicer's work, contains => over a thousand distinct and engaging woodcuts of plants, animals, fish, insects, birds, people, and more. Notable illustrations on the unexpectable side include distillation stills, a unicorn, dragons, a griffin, a phoenix, and a basilisk. In the medical section is information on mummification. Among the Americana content is information on medicinal and edible plants from Florida, the Appalachian Mountains, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, and Paraguay, including yerba mate, cacao, and tobacco, to name just three. This smorgasbord of information about the known universe comes from a long line of compilers, as many herbals do. While Ehrhart (1700–56) has expanded and edited this version, Lonicer (1528–86), a German mathematician and doctor who also happened to be the first publisher's son-in-law, relied heavily on earlier works by Dorsten and Rösslin. => This 16th-century bestseller was reprinted for over 100 years by Frankfurt presses, yet there was still enough demand for this one. Half calf and paper covered–boards in an imitation of tree calf, some time ago rebacked with gilt decorative ruling and black leather label; the whole well-rubbed and the paper with abrasions. Very occasional foxing and spotting, with only a handful of corners bent; moderate pencilling on endpapers only, otherwise clean. => A joy and a wonder.

I,114; Holzmann/Bohatta I,2992. 630 gr. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[1] f., 23, [1] pp.. 1783 After consecration and service in Spain, Sancho de Santa Justa arrived in Manila in 1767 to take up his duties as archbishop, which included overseeing the expulsion of the Jesuits. Recent marbled paper–covered boards (green and mauve stone pattern); red leather label on front cover. A few minor paper repairs to edges of a few leaves; a very few small pinhole type wormholes, not costing any letters; the brown spotting and staining peculiar to rice paper. Old, brief note lightly red-inked to title-page. Over all a very good copy.

RELATION DÉTAILLÉE DE LA CAMPAGNE DE M. LE COMMANDEUR DE SUFFREN, DANS L'INDE, DU 1er. JUIN 1782. AU 29 SEPTEMBRE SUIVANT

Port-Louis [Mauritius: Nicholas Lambert or François Nicolas Bolle], 1783. 12mo. Modern morocco, spine gilt, a.e.g. A fine copy. First edition of this very rare and early Mauritius imprint, published fifteen years after the first press was established there in 1768, recording French Admiral André Suffren's actions against Sir Edward Hughes' British Squadron in the East Indies during the American Revolution. These attacks, famed for their ferocity, provided Suffren with a unique standing among French admirals, and placed him in the front rank of sea commanders of the era. This pamphlet, possibly written by Jacques Jerome Antoine Trublet de Villejegu, documents two of Suffren's four engagements with the British Navy in the Bay of Bengal. Although fought on the other side of the globe, these battles may be considered the final formal engagements of the Revolution which influenced Britain's decision to end the war with the colonies. Suffren had previously been attached to the comte D'Estaing's squadron throughout its operations in North America and the West Indies. These New World activities are also briefly mentioned in the text. An extremely rare 18th-century Mauritius imprint. The NUC records one copy at NYPL, while OCLC lists only the 1970 London reprint.         TRAITE DE PAIX ENTRE LE ROI ET LE ROI DE LA GRANDE- BRETAGNE, CONCLU A VERSAILLES LE 3 SEPTEMBER 1783

Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1783. Quarto. Later marbled boards, leather label. Very minor marginal dampstain throughout. Near fine, untrimmed. The official French printing of the final treaty of peace between France and England in the American War of Independence, concluded Sept. 3, 1783, the same day as the final peace between the other powers in the conflict. Because of the French naval setbacks in 1782, the treaty resulted in little territorial loss for England, and the powers returned each other's Caribbean possessions. Furthermore, England's claims to Newfoundland were maintained, and mutual fishing rights off the Canadian coast were agreed upon. The NUC and OCLC together locate nine copies of this scarce printing. [with:] ACTS PASSED AT A GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA. BEGUN AND HELD AT THE PUBLIC BUILDINGS IN THE CITY OF RICHMOND, ON MONDAY THE TWENTIETH DAY OF OCTOBER, IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-THREE

Richmond: Printed by John Dunlap and James Hayes, 1783. Folio. Half calf and marbled boards in antique style, leather label. Short repaired tear to second titlepage, some leaves toned, faint dampstain throughout. Still very good. A rare pair of Virginia imprints comprising the session laws for the state assembly in 1783. Understandably, these session laws are concerned with issues relating to the Revolutionary War, with acts in the first imprint touching on the seizure of British goods, claims for property taken for public use, soldier pay, and more. The war ended between the two sessions featured here, and as such, the second session is concerned with issues beyond the war, such as taxation, the emancipation of certain slaves who served Virginia in the war, and the surveying of land given to officers and soldiers of the Continental Army. Both works are rare in institutions and in the marketplace, with but three and two copies in OCLC, respectively. EVANS 18282, 18283. OCLC 7082991, 7082960. ESTC W14155, W23693.

Hartford, 1783. 12mo. Contemporary calf. Boards worn (leather on lower board loose but holding), corners abraded, outer joints worn. Later ink inscriptions on front pastedown. Titlepage soiled and worn. Moderately age-toned, soiled, and dampstained. Lacking the very rare map (as is virtually always the case). A good copy. In a half morocco and cloth box. "This is not only the first American book on the Northwest Coast, but also the first American book on Hawaii..." - Streeter. Ledyard sailed as a corporal of Royal Marines on Cook's last voyage, and was on board ship when Cook met his death on Hawaii. A native of Connecticut, he was with Cook during the first part of the American Revolution and in England until 1782. Assigned to the North American station, he deserted and returned to Hartford, where this account (evidently intermixed with the 1781 narrative of John Rickman, probably by an unidentified editor) was published in 1783. "Czech composer, violinist, music director and writer... Pichl's music stands between the early and high Classical styles. A detailed list of works that he prepared for Dlaba 's Künstler-Lexikon shows about 900 pieces, the greater number of which are extant... His use of sonata form in both orchestral and chamber works shows a marked contrast between the energetic primary and melodious secondary themes, and some have elaborate development sections. His chromaticism and expressive harmony bear Mozartian traits." Milan Poštolka in Grove Music Online.

Quérard I, p. 7. DSB I, pp. 44-45.
