The Narrative of Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Clinton, K.B. relative to his Conduct during Part of his Command of the King's Troops in North America.

London: J. Debrett, 1783 - Octavo (196 × 117 mm). Nineteenth-century half calf, marbled boards, title gilt longitudinally to the spine. Housed in quarter green morocco drop-back box, brown cloth boards. Rubbed, spine dry and lacking portions from head and tail, front board detached, title page quite browned from the portrait, the text-block more lightly so, overall very good. Contemporary engraved portrait of Clinton mounted to verso of the second binder's blank, bound with half-title, errata slip bound after the title. First edition. This copy inscribed on the half-title; "The Revd. Mr. Fenn with H. Clinton's Compts.". Towards the end of 1777 Clinton had become Commander-in-Chief of the British army in North America. Clinton's accusation that the surrender at Yorktown was Cornwallis's fault prompted a response from Cornwallis citing the failures of others at engagements in the South and the failure of Clinton to support Cornwallis against the French fleet. Cornwallis's surrender essentially ended the war and Clinton's career. His later years were occupied with a "prolonged, lonely defence of his command" entailing a "destructive pamphlet war" (ODNB) with those he felt had avoided their fair share of the blame. Decidedly uncommon inscribed. Howes 496, Sabin 13751 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Essais sur l'hygrométrie. Ier. Essai. Description d'un nouvel hygromètre comparable; II. Essai. Théorie de l'hygrométrie; III. Essai. Théorie de l'évoporation. IV. Essai.

      - Neuchatel, Samuel Fauche Père et Fils, 1783. 4to (24.0 x 19.5 cm). xxiv, 367 pp. Half-title, title with woodcut vignette, first essay with a nice, large engraved text vignette; two plates, of which one larger, folded. Contemporary full morocco. Spine with five raised bands, compartments with gilt floral patterns and gilt title on tan morocco label. Edges red.l A classic work on hygrometry containing the description of the modern hygrometer, invented by De Saussure - the same author of the famous "Voyages dans les Alpes". The Swiss scientist Horace Bénedict de Saussure (1740-1799) is widely regarded as the father of alpinism. He had a deep interest in botany, geology and meteorology, hence his endeavours in hygrometry. Not surprisingly, one chapter in the fourth essay is titled "Observations météorologiques faites en voyageant dans les Alpes". "Donné par le célèbre auteur. C. Bonnet" is written in an old hand on the title page. This is most likely the Swiss entomologist, botanist and philosopher Charles Bonnet (1720-1793), uncle of De Saussure and author of "Recherches sur l'usage des feuilles dans les plantes" (1754). Bonnet was also the first to describe a type of hallucination now known as Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS). Small bookplate of Andreas Gedeon on the front pastedown. Otherwise a very good, clean copy. Norman, 1894. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Berlinische Monatsschrift. Herausgegeben von F. Gedike und J.E. Biester. Berlin: Unger und Haude und Spener, 1783-96.

      - 28 volumes, complete. The Berlinische Monatsschrift was the main publication spreading the Enlightenment in Germany. It was the organ of the Mittwochsgesellschaft, the Berlin ‘Wednesday Society’, a secret group of Friends of Enlightenment whose members included Johann Friedrich Zöllner and Moses Mendelssohn, as well as the Monatsschrift editors, Gedike and Biester. The monthly magazine's 168 issues came out between 1783 and 1796. Fifteen essays by Immanuel Kant made their first appearance in its pages (see the list in our images), most famously his answer to Zöllner's question ‘What is Enlightenment?’ in the December 1784 issue (Volume 4). The journal was published monthly in blue paper covers, with six issues making up each Volume. This set originates from different libraries and collectors, hence the variety of the contemporary bindings. The final volume contains the publishers’ unpaginated Abschiedsblatt, or farewell leaf, which is missing in the other copies we have seen. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 28 volumes [all published], 8vo, in various contemporary bindings, rubbed and with wear in places, eight volumes with the original blue wrappers bound in, all but two with the portrait frontispieces, Vol. 2 with a worm trace on the spine, browning and a little underlining, internal condition of the other volumes ranging from good to very good, with occasional dampstaining, a rich historical and scholarly resource, hardly ever offered for sale complete.

A practical treatise on chimneys. Containing full directions for preventing or removing smoke in houses, Illustrated with copperplates. Third edition.

Edinburgh: printed for C. Elliot. Sold, at London, by T. Cadell. 1783. 12mo., large folding engraved copperplate comprising 18 figures, vi + 82 + (2)pp., including the final leaf of 'Directions to the Binder', contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, old paper label on spine, upper joint cracked but sound, slight wear to extremities, else a very good presentation copy inscribed in ink 'M'Tavish Esqr from the Author>' and with the later armorial bookplate of Seton of Mounie on front pastedown. A very scarce edition, ESTC recording copies at only 4 libraries: BL + NLS + Un. of Delaware + Niedersachsische Staats-Bibliothek. An analysis of the causes of smoky chimneys with suggested solutions to the problem. This work was first published anonymously in an Edinburgh edition of 1776 but, as the author explains in his Advertisement>, he has cast aside his concealment as other writers 'of several Treatises' and inventors had been taking advantage of his ideas. Dr James Anderson (1739-1807) was a Scottish agriculturist and political economist who co-operated with Jeremy Bentham and Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster, the famous Scottish agronomist, but also produced a large body of his own work and issued the monthly Recreations in Agriculture>, 1797-1802. Although Anderson originally signed this particular copy for an unknown M'Tavish, it later passed into his wife's family, the Setons of Mounie, Aberdeenshire. Anderson married the heiress Margaret Seton in 1768. The inscription, A. Seton>, may refer to their eldest son, Alexander (1760-1850) who succeeded his mother in 1768, having assumed the Seton surname by the terms of succession, or possibly his eldest son, also Alexander, born 1815.

New Ipswitch, NH, 1783-1813. 7 stab-stitched manuscript volumes, 1 is 6-1/4" x 4" (18 pp.), 1 is 12-1/2" x 8" (12 pp.), 1 is 14" x 12-1/2" (16 pp.) and 4 are 7-1/4" x 6-1/2" (6 pp., 8 pp., 14 pp., 18 pp.). Manuscript in ink to most rectos and versos. Moderate browning, somewhat lighter in places, foxing, some leaves have dampstaining, tears or chips, with loss of text in a few cases. An interesting archive. $850. * New Ipswitch is a small New Hampshire town on the Massachusetts border, about 40 miles north of Worcester. The volumes in this archive record the daily operations of the town government, such as lists of taxes collected from residents and payments for selectmen, constables and building expenses. It is, on the whole, an interesting collection of source material concerning the inner workings of small New England town government in the post-Revolutionary period.

Commonwealth of Massachusetts, (Tax No 3), Thomas Ivers, Esq.

1783 - A Massachusetts Tax to Defray the Cost of the Revolutionary War [Broadside] [Taxation]. [Massachusetts]. Commonwealth of Massachusetts. (Tax No 3.). Boston, June, 1783. 16" x 10" broadside, amount of assessed tax and date added in manuscript by Thomas Ivers, treasurer and receiver-general of Massachusetts, his signature, dated October 1, 1783, below text. Mounted on linen, lightly browned, some edgewear, sections lacking from corners and along fold lines with minor loss to text. A rare item. $1,250. * This broadside is, in effect, a warrant to collect unpaid taxes. In this particular case, an amount of four pounds and four shillings to be collected by the constable or collector in the town of Leverett, Massachusetts. According to Ford, this broadside was printed in June of 1783, at a time when the Commonwealth was trying to pay down expenses associated with the war. Financial hardship from the war would persist long after the conflict with Great Britain ended, and the Commonwealth applied sustained pressure to collect revenue from its cities and towns. Interestingly, this prophetic broadside foretells Shays's Rebellion, in that just three years later perceived economic and taxation inequities prompted rural central and western Massachusetts such as Leverett to rise up in a series of historic protests against the Commonwealth. No copies listed on OCLC. Ford, Broadsides & Ballads &c. Printed in Massachusetts 1639-1800 2371.

MEN'S SINS NOT CHARGEABLE ON GOD, BUT ON THEMSELVES. A DISCOURSE DELIVERED AT WALLINGFORD, DECEMBER 22, 1782. OCCASIONED BY THE TRAGICAL EXIT OF WILLIAM BEADLE, HIS WIFE, AND FOUR CHILDREN, AT WETHERSFIELD, ON THE MORNING OF THE 11th INSTANT, BY HIS OWN HANDS.

      T. & S. Green,, New Haven: 1783 - 28pp, but lacking the half title. Toned, scattered foxing. Good+, in modern cloth with institutional bookplate and withdrawal on the front free endpaper. "Beadle was a poor unfortunate who exterminated his family and himself. 'It appears he had for some time before, carried to his bed every night an ax and a carving knife'." [McDade, recording several other pamphlets but not this one]. To the perplexed, who are possibly confused about the source of evil in the world, Dana explains, "The plain truth is, that moral evil proceeds not from the Creator, but from the creature." A long footnote to Dana's Sermon, extracted from the Connecticut Courant, says that Beadle married "an amiable woman, of a reputable family, by whom he had four lovely and promising children, one son and three daughters." He brought "the knife, the ax and pistols, as weapons of death. to his bed-chamber. With the utmost secrecy, unperceived by any, he destroyed a worthy and beautiful wife, in the midst of life, and four pleasant children, sleeping in their beds." NAIP w026133 [5].         BOSTON, APRIL 17, 1783. GENTLEMEN, BY THE INCLOSED RESOLVE, TRANSMITTED TO YOU BY THE DIRECTIONS OF THIS TOWN AT THEIR LAST MEETING, YOU MAY FORM SOME JUDGEMENT OF THEIR SENTIMENTS RESPECTING THE ABSENTEES, AND YOUR WISDOM AND PATRIOTISM WILL DETERMINE AS TO THE PROPRIETY AND USEFULNESS OF COMING INTO THE SAME OR SIMILAR RESOLVES.

1783 - Signed in ink at the end, 'Nat. Barber Chman by Order'. [Boston: 1783]. [joined with] BOSTON, APRIL 10, 1783. AT A MEETING OF THE FREEHOLDERS AND OTHER INHABITANTS OF THE TOWN OF BOSTON.RESOLVED, THAT THIS TOWN WILL AT ALL TIMES, (AS THEY HAVE DONE) TO THE UTMOST OF THEIR POWER, OPPOSE EVERY ENEMY TO THE JUST RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES OF MANKIND: AND THAT AFTER SO WICKED A CONSPIRACY AGAINST THOSE RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES, BY CERTAIN INGRATES, MOST OF THEM NATIVES OF THESE STATES, AND WHO HAVE BEEN REFUGEES AND DECLARED TRAITORS TO THEIR COUNTRY,- IT IS THE OPINION OF THIS TOWN, THAT THEY OUGHT NEVER TO BE SUFFERED TO RETURN, BUT BE EXCLUDED FROM HAVING LOT OR PORTION AMONG US. Signed in ink at the end, 'Att. William Cooper' Town-Clerk. [Boston: 1783]. Two broadsides, each recorded as a separate imprint, here undivided on a single folio sheet, folded to four pages for mailing. Each folded page is 8" x 13". The first page is blank except for the contemporary ink manuscript address to the Committee of Correspondence or the Selectmen of Gorham [plus unrelated scribbling]. The two interior pages are the printed broadsides of April 17 and April 10, respectively. The last page is blank, except for the contemporary notation, 'Resolve of the Town of Boston Respecting Tories, And their Committee Letter to this Town, April 10 & 17- 1783.' Untrimmed, one blank inner margin tear [from opening the sealed correspondence]. Very Good. These rare broadsides urge Massachusetts Towns to bar Tories, "Absentees," "Conspirators," "Ingrates," and other disloyal persons from returning "to their Estates, the Rights of Citizenship, and the Enjoyment of that Happiness they have been the main Instruments of making us thus long sorely toil and bleed for." Long considered separate imprints, the two broadsides were issued here as an undivided sheet: the April 17 item's reference to "the inclosed Resolve" clearly refers to the April 10 Resolve, as no Resolve is printed in the April 17 item. This offering is an enlightening and extraordinary rarity. None of the consulted references records them joined as here.April 17: Bristol B5687. Shipton 44348. NAIP w038713 [3- M-Ar, RPJCB, MHi]. Early twentieth-century quarter leather over five raised bands; marbled paper-covered boards and endpapers; fore and lower edge apparently unresized; 176, [2] pp. Engraved allegorical title vignette. Small private owner label removed from front pastedown; a few leaves lightly foxed, else very good. An attractively-bound copy of issue ten of this famous literary periodical, of which sixteen parts appeared in total in 1783-1784. The journal was published by the Academy of Sciences at the behest of Catherine the Great and in close cooperation with Princess Ekaterina Dashkova (1743-1810), a confidante of Catherine and one of the leading figures of the Russian Enlightenment. "Sobesednik" is unique for being the first attempt to publish only original Russian works, rather than relying in large part on translations of foreign texts. Its influence on Russian literature and language was quite significant and Dashkova and her co-editors were able to involve some of the leading Russian writers of the time, including Gavrila Derzhavin, Ippolit Bogdanovich, Dmitri Fonvizin, Vasilii Kapnist, Ermil Kostrov and Mikhail Kheraskov. The journal also contained numerous original works by Catherine the Great herself, which at times constituted over half of its content. After some controversy the publication ceased after sixteen months. "Long after it had ceased publication it was still cherished by the Russian intelligentsia as a landmark in Russian literature, and although Catherine wrote so much for its pages, it remained Dashkova's journal" (Ian Grey, Catherine the Great). This tenth issue contains the first publication of a humorous ode to immortality, "Khochu k bessmert'iu priiutit'sia", by Aleksandr S. Khvostov's (1753-1820) a Russian diplomat and official who was active as a tranlator and writer and a friend of Derzhavin. Bitovt 2038.

A history of the revolt of Ali Bey, against the Ottoman Porte, including an account of the form of government of Egypt; together with a description of Grand Cairo, and of several places in Egypt, Palestine, and Syria: to which are added, a short account of the present state of the Christians who are subjects to the Turkish government, and the journal of a gentleman who travelled from Aleppo to Bassora.

London: James Phillips, 1783 - Octavo (225 x 135 mm). Uncut in the original grey boards, paper backstrip, printed paper label to spine. With a laid-in typed translation into Italian of a British newspaper report of Joachim Murat's invasion of Sicily, dated Messina, 19 September 1810. Contemporary manuscript correction to author's address on title page, a touch rubbed and marked overall, corners and head of spine bumped, surface splitting to tail of both joints and along rear hinge, old restoration to backstrip at tail, occasional light foxing as usual. Complete with the errata leaf. An excellent, entirely unsophisticated copy. First edition, rare in the original boards, of this important account of the revolt of 'Ali Bey, the shaykh al-balad of Egypt who declared the country independent of the Ottoman Empire before proceeding to seize control of the Hijaz and invade Syria. His rule ended following the insubordination of his most trusted general, Abu al-Dhahab, which led to Ali Bey's exile then death outside the walls of Cairo. "Very little is known of Lusignan, who claims to have known Ali Bey personally. He seems to have been a Greek or more probably a Cypriot who took refuge in London; he advertises himself as a teacher of ancient and modern Greek (on A5v), but there is no mention of him in Legrand. Perhaps he is connected with the Giacomo Lusignan who later acted as a factotum for the Earl of Guildford" (Blackmer). [Attributes: First Edition]

Observations on the Passage to India through Egypt, and across the Great Desert; with Occasional Remarks on the adjacent Countries, and also Sketches of the different Routes.

London: for W. Faden, J. Robson, and R. Sewell, 1783 - Quarto (250 × 197 mm). Attractive recent half calf to style by Trevor Lloyd, red morocco label, urn device gilt to compartments, marbled sides. List of errata verso of dedication leaf struck through and the listed errors corrected in ink in a contemporary hand, lightly browned, some spotting, but overall a very good copy. 2 engraved folding maps. First edition. Capper was educated at Harrow and joined the army of the East India Company "in His Majesty's Train of Artillery in the East Indies, First as a soldier cadet and later as an officer. He was then for a while a free merchant in Bengal before becoming in 1768 a captain in the Madras army and in 1769 senior writer for the presidency of Bengal [later] appointed the East India Company's commissary-general upon the coast of Coromandel" (ODNB). In early 1777 he was sent home with despatches, remaining in England until the autumn of 1778 when, "to explore the feasibility of opening a new channel for transmitting intelligence between Europe and India, he returned to Madras by way of Aleppo, the Arabian desert, and Basrah." The present work contains details of his journey from India to England in early 1777, via Ceylon and Suez, and his return journey in 1778–9. Given more or less in journal form, it is full of fascinating details of local life, offering numerous hints for the traveller in the region. As was so often the case, Capper felt himself badly treated by John Company, issuing a lengthy memorial detailing the abuses of the company's lax and corrupt civilian management in India. "Despite this he resumed his career in India in 1785, when he became comptroller-general of the army and fortification accompts on the coast of Coromandel, charged with reducing expenditure in Madras. He resigned in 1791 and returned to Britain. The East India Company twice thereafter refused him a pension." He later made a name for himself as a meteorologist and as a local philanthropist in south Wales where he settled. Blackmer 282; Gay 206; Wilson p.37; not in Atabey. [Attributes: First Edition]
