Written in Spanish baroque style, it is considered as a masterpiece of prosaic history. The book was very successful and was published in dozens of editions. This copy was thought to be an 'anniversary issue', a hundred years after the first edition, designed for bibliophiles, printed on deluxe paper and including historicized and dramatic illustrations. Binding lightly worn. The last plate and the last 5 pages of the first volume with light water stain. Otherwise totally washed copy on immaculate strong rag paper. Very wide margins.         Oneiromantien, eller konsten at tyda drömar.

I-II. Sthlm, Stolpiska tryckeriet, 1783. 8:o. 182 + 164 s. Med dekorativa träsnittsillustrationer efter varje kapitel. Nött samtida hfrbd med upphöjda bind. Bakre yttre falsen sprucken nedtill.

Epitome Ritualis Romani, In Usum Missionum Scotiae

Edinburgh (?): (unk), 1783. Hardcover. Poor. 12mo. iv, 190pp. Remnants of full calf binding. Mostly in Latin with a section of the appendices in English. There are only two leather remnants of the original binding left on the boards, but enough to confirm a simple binding with a blind rule around the edges. The spine has perished completely leaving the sewing exposed, and with the boards hanging on only by worn cords. The ffep is gone, but the rfep is present. Given its history, no attempt has been made to stabilize or repair the binding; instead it has been housed in a custom clamshell case to protect it in the condition is has come down to us. A survival of the Catholic Mission to Scotland. With the Scottish Reformation, the old Catholic hierarchy of Scotland ended with the death of the Archbishop of Glasgow in 1603. Thereafter the Roman Church designated Scotland a Missionary Territory. Catholics went underground and those caught practicing the Old Religion were imprisoned or killed. Catholic rituals such as this one were destroyed. It is no wonder that the sources are unsure of the place of printing or the name of the publisher and only guess at Edinburgh. Nor is it a surprise to find the book small enough to be concealed easily on one's person. It is well used, and a very scarce survival of a difficult period. The Catholic Scottish hierarchy was not restored until 1878 when conditions had changed sufficiently to allow it. Only one copy listed in OCLC; another edition, printed in London in the same year, has also only a single listing. ESTC T202694. Truly rare.

Facsimile reprint in Classics of Pediatrics Library, New York, 1995. See: PEDIATRICS Vol. 52 No. 6 December 1973, pp. 845ff: "Dr. George Armstrong (1719-1789), one of the first of the English physicians to devote his time entirely to the care of children, and the originator of the first dispensary for sick children in the English speaking world, had this to say about the lack of concern of physicians of his day in the care of children: "If we take a survey of the different provinces of medicine, we shall readily discover, that one which happens to be of the greatest consequence to society, as the population of every country in a great measure depends upon it, I mean that which regards the diseases of infants, has hitherto lain uncultivated. I do not pretend to account for this strange neglect, nor is it to my purpose: but certain it is, that though the human species can only be preserved by taking proper care of the infant race, which is much more helpless than the young of other animals; and though a much greater number of our species in proportion to the whole, than of any that we know, dies very young; yet the care of infants, even with regard to medicine, has commonly been left to old women, nurses, and midwives, so that it has long been a common saying in this country, that the best doctor for a child, is an old woman. . . I know there are some of the physical tribe who are not fond of practicing among infants; and I have heard an eminent physician say, that he never wished to be called in to a young child; because he was really at a loss to know what to order for it..."

Trykt på kraftigt skrivepapir. Kobberstukket titelblad (G. C. Schule efter forlæg af Guiter) + 27 kobberstukne plancher af J. F. Clemens efter Johannes Wiedewelt. Indbundet i 2 uniforme samtidige halvbind af marmoreret kalveskind med rig rygforgyldning i Louis Seize-stil. Exlibris (Hjalmar Hartmann). Meget velholdt sæt.. Bibl. Dan. III,933. For plancherne, se Swane 128-154.

Exemplified by several of the rarest and most elegant subjects in the orders of the Testacea, Lithophyta, and Zoophyta animalia, accurately drawn from nature. With explanations in English and French

London, printed for the author by James Dixwell, 1783 (part 1) and London, J. Barbut, 1788 (part II). Two volumes in two. 4to, large 4to. Volume one with engraved frontispiece and the title in French, title page, 2 pp. list of subscribers, xx, II, 101 pp, 11 hand-coloured engraved plates; volume II with engraved title page, xxvii, (1), 76 pp, and 14 fine engraved plates of which 13 are hand-coloured. Volume I in contemporary full diced calf, with gilt borders and gilt title on the spine. Marbled endpapers; volume II in contemporary polished calf with blind-tooled and gilt lined borders, spine with four raided bands, gilt-bordered compartments and gilt title. Marbled edges, marbled endpapers.* First edition. Text in two columns (English and French). A beautiful work on many forms of sea-life, traditionally grouped in a few Linnaean orders, but mainly belonging to the Mollusca, Bivalvia, Nudibranchia (also some terrestrial slugs), and Cephalopoda with fine illustrations in contemporary hand-colouring. Other well-represented groups are the Echinodermata, Cnidaria, Crustacea, and Annelida. The last plate is intentionally uncoloured as it contains a schematic overview of the various orders. Very rare to see the two parts together as they were published in different years and are usually on the market separately. This is not a uniform set, but both volumes are complete and in a very good condition. The second volume is a very wide margined copy. Some scattered light spotting and some offsetting to the tissue-guards. Caprotti I, p. 53; Nissen ZBI, 221.

The Book of Common Prayer, Together with the Psalter, or Psalms of David

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1783. 12mo. 282ff. Bound by Edwards of Halifax in full vellum with a gilt pentaglyph and metope roll border on a blue wash background. Both covers ornamented with gilt wavy broken line and sprig roll borders on a blue wash background, enclosing a gilt roll with the leaf spray initials "MLC" at center. Spine with gilt titling against a blue wash background, and compartments separated by the gilt pentaglyph and metope roll border. Each compartment contains a tooled urn device. With a contemporary fore-edge painting of Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire. Once one of the richest religious houses, thanks to its system of lay brothers within its severe Cistercian order, it was dismantled under Henry VIII's dissolution of monastaries. It is the largest abbey ruin in England. A contemporary ownership inscription (M.L. Carey? or Casey?) at the top margin of the title page matches the initials on the front cover. It is likely, therefore, that the painting and the binding were commissioned by the original owner, a conjecture that is reinforced by the fine condition of this example. Apart from light foxing to title page and a few early leaves, the text is fresh and clean, the vellum is likewise clean, with just a touch of finger soiling, and it retains its original slipcase of gilt-tooled, straight-grained green morocco.

Paris: chez l'auteur & chez Descourtis, 1783. 2 prints etched and engraved by Descourtis after de Machy, printed in colours from at least four plates by Gayant le jeune. Early erasure of the dedicatee's name and five words of the dedication beneath the image on each print, and each with the dedicatees arms pasted-over with an irregular slip with pen, ink and watercolour symbolic drawing of an all-seeing eye added in place of the arms, with the motto of the order of St. Lazare. Sheet size: 19 1/2 x 25 1/2 inches; image sizes: 16 x 24 1/4 inches & 15 3/4 x 24 1/4 inches. Reproduction gilt frames. (Skilfully repaired tear in image and text abraded in title area). A pair of spectacular and very rare 18th century colour prints of the highest quality, illustrating life in pre- Revolutionary Paris. Both views are of the heart of the city: the first shows the Port St. Paul on the western bank of the Seine. To the right is the tip of the Ile St. Louis with the eastern bank and the port St. Bernard beyond. At the center of the image is a massive store of empty barrels awaiting shipment back to the wine producers. In the foreground is a scene that shows a busy port at work. The second plate is a similar view taken from the quai St. Bernard on the eastern bank of the Seine, with an earlier incarnation of the pont de la Tournelle leading across the river to the ile St.-Louis. In the background beyond the bridge can be seen the massive presence of Notre Dame on the Ile de la Cité. In the foreground are people of Paris of all classes: the leisured make a promenade, watching their poorer compatriots at work. The present pair are thus examples of the earliest states, but altered in the revolutionary atmosphere to ensure that the dedicatee's name and arms were erased. The nature and quality of the replacement drawing suggests that this was done by the publishers before the prints were sold.         Document signed: Marriage Contract between Louis FranÁois RenE, the Marquis de Courtarvel; and Marie Louise de Lambert. Signed by Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, Louis Stanislas Xavier (Comte de Provence, later Louis XVIII); Marie JosEphine Louise (Comtesse de Provence), Marie ThErese (Comtesse d'Artois); and Elisabeth Marie ("Madame Elisabeth")

[Versailles], 13 juillet, 1783. Folio. [16] pp., consisting of 4 bifolia. Sewn with red ribbon. First bifolium separating at fold, slight soiling; overall, very good. In a custom blue morocco folding case. From the collection of LOUIS AUCHINCLOSS . Fine and rare document with the clear, bold signatures of both of the doomed monarchs, together on the same page -- a document virtually impossible to find on the market except for the occasional marriage contract, signed by the King and Queen and royal family. Only three of these have surfaced at auction over the last thirty-five years -- the last one being in 1991. The present example is also signed by the King's brother, Louis Stanislas Xavier, Comte de Provence, the future King Louis XVIII (from 1814 - 1824); and his wife, Princess Marie JosEphine Louise of Savoy; her sister Princess Marie JosEphine of Savoy, who married Charles Philippe, Count of Artois. Finally, the document is signed by the King's sister, Elisabeth Marie, known as "Madame Elisabeth" and the favorite sister-in-law of Marie Antoinette. Louis FranÁois RenE, the Marquis de Courtarvel (1759 -1841), "marEchal de champ" (according to genealogical websites), was the eldest son of RenE CEsar, le Comte de Courtavel (1728-1802), and Marie FranÁoise ThErËse de LIGNERIS (b. 1742?). His bride, Marie Louise de Lambert, was the daughter of Henri Joseph de LAMBERT (d.1808?), and Marie ANISSON du PERRON. Various membeers of both families have signed the page facing the royal signatures

A new map of North America with the West India Islands

London., 1783. divided according to the preliminary articles of peace, signed at Versailles 20 April 1783 wherein are particularly distinguished the Unites States of America, and the several provinces, goverments etc which compose the British Dominions. Size: 1048 x 1195 mm. Copperplate engraving with original outline colour. Fine condition. A fascinating large scale four-sheet map of North America, extending southward to the West Indies and Central America. The scale of the map allows for detailed and accurate information and to display the very latest discoveries, such as the Jesuit priest Father Kino's inset map of the land passage to the Pacific via California. A superbly decorative title cartouche features Native Americans in the upper right corner of the map, whilst an inset map of Baffin's Bay and Hudson's Bay is found in the upper left corner. This is a significant and visually stunning map of North America, published at the end of the War of Independence. There is minor offsetting, which is consistent with a map of this size.       Nantes: the Author, Augustin-Jean Malassis, & Despilly, 1783., 1783. 2 Volumes. 4to. pp. xii, 396, 14; 1 p.l., 364, 20. with half-title in Vol. I only. 14 folding engraved plates. woodcut title vignettes & headpieces. contemporary mottled calf, rebacked preserving spine labels, corners renewed (perforation stamps of the Franklin Institute on titles). armorial bookplate of American naval architect John Lenthall, (who donated the book to the library) & with his signature, dated 1830, on titles. Preface initialed by the translator. Inscribed from the translator Lévêque to 'Monseigneur le Comte de Montmorin de St.-Herem, commandant en chef dans la province de Bretagne'. imprint date altered in ink to '1784'. First Edition of the French Translation. An important contribution to naval science by Spanish geometrician and naval officer, Jorge Juan Y Santacilla, originally published in Spanish at Madrid in 1771. Among other notable accomplishments the author participated in the famous joint French-Spanish expedition to Peru in 1735 to measure an arc of the meridian near the equator, founded the astronomical observatory at Cadiz, and established the Friendly Literary Society, the forerunner of the Royal Society of Sciences of Madrid. "His combination of theoretical learning and practical experience enabled Juan, in his Examen maritimo, to provide a considerable base for the improvement of naval science, to refute several empirical theories of navigation, and to establish the fundamental principles of naval architecture. The book is a valuable application of mechanics to naval science." (DSB) The French edition contains significant additions by the translator, French hydrographer, Pierre Lévêque [1746-1814]. The present copy is inscribed from the translator to Armand-Marc, Comte de Montmorin de St.-Herem [1745-1792], who served successively as ambassador to Spain and governor of Brittany. During the early stages of the Revolution, he was associated with Mirabeau and he remained one of the inner circle of the King's friends until he perished in the massacres of September 1792. The book also bears the ownership entry and armorial bookplate of American naval architect John Lenthall [1807-1882,] who was Chief of the Bureau of Construction and Repairs, United States Navy, from 1853 to 1871. Lenthall distinguished himself as a master of wooden shipbuilding, having been chiefly responsible for the design of such ships as the Wabash, Niagara, Roanoke, Colorado, and Minnesota.         Commentaries on the Laws of England. In Four Books. The Ninth Edition, With the Last Corrections of the Author; and Continued to the Present Time, By Ri. Burn, LL.D. Four Volumes. Eller 14

The closest we come to Blackstone's "received text", incorporating the manuscript corrections in his hand found in his own copy, becoming the edition, in the words of William Hammond, from which "most of the current editions are printed". Contemporary tree calf, the spines elaborately extra-gilt, lightly rubbed and chipped, but altogether quite an appealing, even gorgeous set. Printed for W. Strahan; T. Cadell, in the Strand [etc.], London, 1783.
