Recueil de jardins anglois et chinois. Recueil de jardinage composé par le Sr. Panseron, Architecte, Professeur d’Architecture, Ancien Professeur de Dessin à l’Ecole Royale Militaire et cydevant Inspecteur des Batimens de S.A.S. Mrg. le Prince de Conti

Chez lauteur Paris: : Chez l’auteur,, 1783.. Full Calf. Very Good. 4to (27.0 x 20.5 cm), Contemporary decorative calf with red morocco label. Collation: [6] pp. + 6 [i.e. 5], 6, 6, 10 (folded) plates. The book is bound in a decorative, mottled calf French binding of the period. The spine has raised bands and floral gilt decorations in panels, with red morocco label in upper panel. The Ends of spines and corners show some wear. There is worming spot on front cover near fore edge with light scuffing to boards, rubbed corners. All of the plates are hand colored in a fine contemporary hand and paper repair to the folding plates along the spine. There are some small stains on a few plates near the tab, affecting the borders. The first 6 pages contain 4 engraved pages of text. The twenty-seven (27) engraved plates depict garden designs of English and Chinese style with a scale of garden designs are hand colored. This is the second volume of 4 in a series of works, which include the author’s Recueil de jardinage (1783), and, Recueil de jardins. Anglos-chinois (1787). The missing first plate is absent in all extant library copies, indicating it was not bound in all copies, evidenced by an uncolored first plate in the copy of the book in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. The engraved colored plates in the three “Cayer” of 17 plates are excellent examples of English and Chinese gardens and give detail designs of gardens while the remaining 10 folding plates provide “Dispositions” of gardens with with buildings or “Batiments” and other garden structures. Penseron was a student of Jacques Francois Blondel, one of France’s great architects. Penseron designed and engraved all the plates which illustrate his mastery of engraving and beautiful design and coloring to represent the rich and wonderful survey of gardening in France in the second half of the 18th century when English and Chinese gardens were en vogue. Any copy of Panseron’s excellent treatise on English and Chinese garden design is very scarce. (Only a few libraries have this 2nd volume and the Institut national d'histoire de l'art. Collections Jacques Doucet. Bibliothèque. Paris has the complete series of 4 volumes) Excellent hand colored engravings of proposed garden designs by Panseron

        Encyclopédie méthodique. Marine

Paris., 1783; 1786; 1787.. b/w engraved plates, many double page or folding. This is the “Marine” section of Pancoucke’s massive 200-plus volume encyclopedia, which itself was an expanded version of Diderot’s 27 volume effort. It includes a plate volume of 175 engravings showing all phases of marine technology - from cartography to rope making. The three text volumes are arranged alphabetically by topic, and discuss such things as shipbuilding, docks, waterfront fortifications, flags, sails, signaling methods, naval strategy, and anchor forging. These were products of the Enlightenment - attempts to categorize and collect all knowledge. As such, Pancoucke’s Encyclopédie Méthodique is an up to date compendium of everything that was known about marine technology in 1780. It is of great historical value. This set is in brilliant condition, with pages crisp. clean and untrimmed, and engravings sharp and clean, with no foxing or offsetting. Bound in 19th century half calf over marbled boards.

Recent marbled paper–covered boards (green and mauve stone pattern); red leather label on front cover. A few minor paper repairs to edges of a few leaves; a very few small pinhole type wormholes, not costing any letters; the brown spotting and staining peculiar to rice paper. Old, brief note lightly red-inked to title-page. Over all a very good copy.. Folio (29.5 cm; 11.5"). [1] f., 23, [1] pp. After consecration and service in Spain, Sancho de Santa Justa arrived in Manila in 1767 to take up his duties as archbishop, which included overseeing the expulsion of the Jesuits. He was a native of Aragon and a member of the Society of Scholarum Piarum. In this address on the occasion of Charles III's 67th birthday, he expresses himself no friend of many of the Enlightment's ideas but a staunch supporter of the King, his economic policies, and especially of the newly instituted practice of free commerce in the Spanish empire. On the other hand, he rails against England, its foreign commercial practices, and its ascension as a maritime powerhouse. As the title states, this was pronounced before "la Real Sociedad Patriotica de Manila." &c."The work is printed on "rice paper" (i.e., Asian paper probably from the mulberry tree) as was common in Manila during the period to ca. 1820. The typography is definitely provincial and plain, using only one decorative woodcut initial and no ornamentation on the title-page. The type is roman in a variety of sizes with a practice of using all capitals for emphasis. The press on which this work was printed had been that of the Jesuits until Archbishop Sancho de Santa Justa carried out the king's order and expelled them; he then appropriated the press for his private use, as here. What had been only the fourth press to operate in the Islands, now with a new name, became the fifth.Searches of NUC, WorldCat, and COPAC locate only five copies worldwide (three in the U.S., one in the U.K., one in Spain).

Nice copy. ---

Honeyman 2484 ; Nouv. Biogr. Génér. 40, 269/70 - FIRST EDITION, of Pingré's monumental Cométographie, one of the most important books on the subject, still recommended as a source for cometary studies in the 1950s. "Pingré's most important work" (Honeyman) deals with the phenomenon of comets from a historic, astronomic and mathematical perspective. Divided in four parts, it examines the history of astronomy in the first, beginning with an account of Babylonian and Egyptian science. In the following section a thorough catalogue of all comets observed since antiquity is given, which still constitutes a major source of information. The third part deals with theories on the nature of comets and their potential physical effects on the life on earth, while the final section discusses methods for the computation of cometary orbits. Pingré (died 1795) was a famous French astronomer who participated in several scientific voyages, and he was the first to make good observations of VENUS. He was for some time chancellor of Paris University and also librarian of Sainte-Géneviève. This is his principal work and copies have become VERY RARE..

A BILL FOR THE PROVISIONAL ESTABLISHMENT AND REGULATION OF TRADE AND INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND THOSE OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA [caption title]. [PLUS FOUR ADDITIONAL BRITISH ACTS REGARDING BRITISH TRADE WITH THE UNITED STATES, AS LISTED BELOW]

[London. 1783-1788].. Paginations given below. Folio. Four of the titles string-tied, as issued. First title lightly foxed and tanned. Very good. In half morocco and marbled boards box, spine gilt. An interesting assemblage of British legislation from the period immediately following the Revolutionary War, documenting British efforts to allow only very limited trade with the newly independent United States. British trade policy during this period is an excellent example of a foreign power taking advantage of the weak structure of the American Articles of Confederation, which made it difficult for the thirteen states to act in concert and out of a any position of strength through unity. By 1783, the United States had formal trade relations with only two nations - France, secured through the 1778 Treaty of Amity and Commerce, and the Netherlands, via a Commercial Treaty negotiated by John Adams in 1782. Before the Revolution, British merchants had relied heavily on exports sent to the British colonies in North America, which greatly outweighed goods imported to Britain from the colonies. After the war the British government was reluctant to sign a formal commercial treaty with the United States. The states at the time were operating under the relatively weak structure of the Articles of Confederation, and the British felt that they could secure the benefits of trade with the American states without making any treaty concessions. Britain opted instead for a series of Acts that established limited trade with the United States and between the United States and Canada and the British colonies in the West Indies. The first of these laws was passed in 1783 and the evolution of that law is reflected in the first three items below. In all, these British laws severely circumscribed American trade with England and with English colonies, though they did allow some markets for American exports, and did facilitate the flow of much needed imports into the United States. In 1784 British exports to the United States were valued at more than 3.5 million pounds, while American exports to England were less than one-fifth of that sum. The United States and Great Britain would not sign a formal trade treaty until the Jay Treaty, which was approved in 1795 and which gave the United States limited trading rights in the British West Indies. The first, second, third, and fifth titles below were printed in very small numbers for the use of members of Parliament during debate and action on the bills. Known as "slip bills," they are a snapshot of the legislation as it proceeded through the legislative process. The first and fifth titles contain blank spaces in the text where dates and tariff rates would be filled in later, and all four of the slip bills have printed docketing on the final page. The first and fifth items also contain a printed note before the text of the bill reading "the figures in the margin denote the Number of the Folios in the written copy," which indicates just how early in the legislative process these bills were printed. The four Bills and one Act included in this group are: 1) A BILL FOR THE PROVISIONAL ESTABLISHMENT AND REGULATION OF TRADE AND INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND THOSE OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA [caption title]. [London. 1783]. 3,[1]pp. This bill gives the United States the same trading status as other independent sovereign states, but restricts American exports to Great Britain only to those goods that are "the growth, produce, or manufacture of the said United States." It thus forbad the "triangular" trade that American merchants liked to engage in, while not imposing the same restriction on British exporters. ESTC locates only five copies. ESTC N32490. BELL G578 (ref). 2) A BILL [AS AMENDED IN THE COMMITTEE] FOR THE PROVISIONAL ESTABLISHMENT AND REGULATION OF TRADE AND INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND THOSE OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA [caption title]. [London. 1783]. 5,[1]pp. This bill expands on and further defines the previous bill, clearly spelling out the limitations on American trade with England while imposing no such restrictions on English merchants, and in fact making every provision to facilitate British exports to America. ESTC locates six copies. ESTC N32061. 3) A BILL [AS AMENDED IN THE COMMITTEE TO WHOM THE SAME WAS RE-COMMITTED] FOR THE PROVISIONAL ESTABLISHMENT AND REGULATION OF TRADE AND INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND THOSE OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA [caption title]. [London. 1783]. 5,[1]pp. As with the previous two versions of this bill, the language here explains that it would be "highly expedient" to have a trade treaty with the United States, but until that point England would make due with legislation regulating Anglo-American commerce. The same restrictive language regarding exports from America is carried over. ESTC locates only five copies. ESTC N32016. 4) AN ACT TO EXTEND THE POWERS OF AN ACT...FOR GIVING HIS MAJESTY CERTAIN POWERS FOR THE BETTER CARRYING ON TRADE AND COMMERCE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF HIS MAJESTY'S DOMINIONS AND THE INHABITANTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TO THE TRADE AND COMMERCE OF THIS KINGDOM WITH THE BRITISH COLONIES AND PLANTATIONS IN AMERICA... [caption title]. London: Printed by Charles Eyre and William Strahan, 1784. [2],715-716. This law specifically relates to British exports of iron, hemp and sail-cloth from the Baltic states to the United States. ESTC locates only three copies. ESTC N58431. BELL G585. 5) A BILL FOR REGULATING THE TRADE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF HIS MAJESTY'S COLONIES AND PLANTATIONS IN NORTH AMERICA AND IN THE WEST INDIA ISLANDS, AND THE COUNTRIES BELONGING TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; AND BETWEEN HIS MAJESTY'S SAID SUBJECTS AND THE FOREIGN ISLANDS IN THE WEST INDIES [caption title]. [London. 1788]. 9,[1]pp. This bill essentially prohibits American trade with Britain's colonies in the West Indies and also prohibits American exports to Canada. The sole exemption is with regard to salt from the Turks Islands, a product that the English wanted to encourage. The bill allows American ships to receive salt on the islands. It also limits exports from the West Indies to America on such goods as sugar, molasses, coffee, etc., to British ships only. ESTC locates only four copies. ESTC T201245. RAGATZ, p.95. This Dr. Lettsom's biography of his friend and colleague, John Fothergill, the eminent physician, botanist, Quaker leader, and friend to Franklin and of the American colonies in general. Lettsom intended this Account of the Life of Fothergill to be the first part of a three-volume collection of the Fothergill's Works, but, as explained in his prefatory remarks, "difficulties have arisen, which were not foreseen" and many requests for the Life "by those who admired his character, especially those abroad," convinced Lettsom to publish the Life separately, in advance of the Works. That it was intended, as well as used, as the initial preface to The Works of John Fothergill, M.D., is evidenced by the roman numeral pagination and the presence of a list of the contents and plates for the complete Works, which did begin publication later in 1783. & & Somewhat uncommon work on the commercial market- last at auction in 1981.

Carte Du Canada Qui Comprend la Partie Septentrionale Des Etats Unis D'Amerique

Dezauche, 1783. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19.75 x 25.5". Sheet measures 21.5 x 30". This map of Canada and the northern United States extends north from around the latitude of Baltimore all the way up to Baffin Bay along the shore of Greenland. Published by Jean-Claude Dezuache in 1783, it is the eighth revision of a map originally published by De L'Isle in 1703. The map is notable as the first to include "Etats-Unis" in the title, coming as it did on the heels of the American Revolution. In fact, this appearance is one of the earliest appearances of the name United States (Etats-Unis) on a printed map. The map is compelling in its accuracy, particularly with regard to the Great Lakes, depicting them as fully enclosed and properly placed in longitude and latitude. There is also excellent detail around the Hudson and Mississippi Rivers. The elaborate cartouche is decorated with a beaver, natives (one of whom is bearing a scalp), and Jesuit explorers. Furthermore, the fleurs-de-lis that previously adorned the shield at the top of the cartouche has been erased and the crown converted into a halo suspended above an orb, a response to the execution of the king following the French Revolution Below, a table of colors delineates the boundaries of the United States and European possessions. Indian nations are also labeled. The map is in excellent condition with wide margins as issued. Guillaume De L'Isle (1675--1726) was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. He is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. Philippe Buache (1700--1773) was a student of De L'Isle and became one of the most active proponents of the so-called school of theoretical cartography active in mid-18th century France. This map is fascinating record from a remarkable moment in North American history.

A Course of Lectures: Containing Remarks upon the Government and Education of Children. Thoughts upon the Government and Education of Children, Thoughts upon the present Plan of Education, and An Essay upon Elocution. As read lately in many parts of England and Scotland. To which is added, A Sermon

Edinburgh: Printed for the Author, 1783. 8vo, 202 x 128 mms., pp. 338, including half-title, contemporary calf, recently rebacked with old gilt spine and red morocco label laid down, facsimiles of pp. 19 - 22 inserted before defective leaves of those pages in text, and last leaf of subscribers in facsimile; text a little fingered and soiled, but a good copy. Who was Rest Knipe? He must have been known to dozens of people in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, because there are 32 pages of subscribers in the two editions of this book; but he seems to have escaped the attention of scholars. Perhaps the most obvious feature of his treatise is the almost completely secular character of the education he prescribes for children and his opposition to a classical education for most boys: "after a boy has been puzzling his poor brains, and been tortured with Latin for several years, it is ten to one, that, comparative speaking, he knows nothing; i. e nothing radical and to the bottom; nothing, in short, but what one year's apprenticeship will entirely efface." Walter Scott, presumably the father of the novelist and poet, was one of the subscribers. ESTC T121650 locates copies in BL, Cambridge, NLS; Harvard, McMaster, National Institute of Education, and Pennsylvania. The Aberdeen printing is a different setting, with pagination [6], 11-304, and probably takes precedence over the Edinburgh edition.

        The Expedition of Humphry Clinker

London - T. Longman and G. Robinson, 1783 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The Expedition of Humphry Clinker was the last of the picaresque novels of Tobias Smollett, and is considered by many to be his best and funniest work. Published in London on 17 June 1771, it is an epistolary novel, presented in the form of letters written by six different characters: Matthew Bramble, a Welsh Squire; his sister Tabitha; their niece and nephew, Jery and Lydia Melford; Tabitha's maid Winifred Jenkins; and Lydia's suitor, Wilson. Third edition. In three volumes complete. Tobias George Smollett (1721 - 1771) was a Scottish poet and author. He was best known for his picaresque novels, such as The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748) and The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751), which influenced later novelists such as Charles Dickens. His novels were amended liberally by printers; a definitive edition of each of his works was edited by Dr. O. M. Brack, Jr. to correct variants. Previous owner's ink inscription to front pastedown dated 1951. This edition has an errata to date to title pages, stating 1683 rather than 1783. Condition: Rebound in quarter buckram with paper covered boards. Externally, smart but with minor wear to extremities the odd mark and slight marginal offsetting to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with the occasional spot and handling mark and offsetting to endpapers. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.
