        Of the Imitation of Christ: in Three Books. Translated from the Latin of Thomas a Kempis by John Payne

      Re-printed and sold by Joseph Crukshank, London: printed, Philadelphia 1783 - Second American edition. 12mo. Second American edition, following the very rare Saur edition of 1749 but the first American edition of Payne's translation. Apparently an earlier edition had been planned in 1667 or 1669 at Cambridge by Samuel Green but the Massachusetts Courts suppressed it. In 1749 Sauer printed it as "The Christian Pattern." Curiously, the DNB dates the first edition of Payne's edition as 1785. Includes "The Ingenious and Pious Author of The Amaranth, a Collection of Religious Poems, printed 1767, gives the following Account of Thomas à Kempis" preceding the text. This was first translated into English by William Atkinson and published by Margaret, Duchess of Beaufort in 1503. Evans 17992; Parson, Catholic Americana 45; Library Company of Philadelphia "First American Editions" 9 (for the earlier edition); not in Finotti. PMM 13 (for the 1473 edition) Contemporary sheep. Some light rubbing, some cracking along lower portion of upper joint and lower panel of spine, some light browning of text, later ownership signature on endpaper, else a very good copy in a brown cloth open-end box [Attributes: First Edition]

        Oneiromantien, eller konsten at tyda drömar [Oneiromantien, or the art of dream interpretation]. I-II.

      1783 - Stockholm, Stolpiska tryckeriet, 1783. 8:o. 182 + 164 pp. With decorative woodcut illustrations after each chapter. Plain sprinkled boards with red label. Sprinkled edges. Spine somewhat faded. Occasional spotting. Minor ink stain in the text on pp. 53-54 in the first volume.Bibliotheca Walleriana 20043. The work has previously been ascribed both to the author's brother August Nordenskiöld and to Peter Fredell. "Oneiromantien" - from the Greek "oneiros", dream, and "manteia", prophesy - is modeled as a dream dictionary, whose content was described by a contemporary commentator as "chastened swedenborgism". The Swedish church historian Harry Lenhammar has written about "Oneiromantien" and notes that it in fact was an attempt to circumvent the censorship with the goal of spreading the ideas of swedenborgism at a time when original works by Swedenborg could not be published in Sweden. The number of copies printed was 1000. The work drew attention at the time of publishing and a few years later it was used as a weapon in a debate between the poet and literary critic Johan Henric Kellgren - an avid supporter of the Enlightenment - and the Swedenborgians.         Institutes Political and Military, written originally in the Mogul Language, by the Great Timour, improperly called Tamerlane;

      Oxford: At Clarendon-Press,, 1783. First translated Into Persian By Abu Taulib Alhusseini; and thence Into English with Marginal Notes By Major Davy, Persian Secretary to the Commander in Chief of the Bengal Forces from the Year MCCCLXX to MCCCLXXIII, and now Persian Secr. to the Governor General of Bengal. The Original Persian transcribed from a MS. in the Possession of Dr. William Hunter, Physician Extraordinary to the Queen … and the Whole Work published with a Preface, Indexes, Geographical Notes, &c. &c. Quarto (279 × 216 mm). Modern half calf by Period Binders, marbled boards, red morocco label, floral lozenges gilt to the compartments, edges stained red. Portrait frontispiece and 2 plans. Text finely printed in English and Persian. Light browning throughout, off-set from the portrait to the blank facing, and from the plans to the blank verso of the text leaf facing, and verso of the plan bound before, else very good. First edition in English of the so-called Autobiographical Memoirs of Timur or Temür, historically known as Tamerlane, the most powerful ruler in Muslim world, and founder of the Timurid dynasty. Current scholarship rejects the autobiographical claims of the original manuscript, but it remains one of the most reliable sources for the social and military organisation of the Timurids and was the text on which the Moguls of India based their administrative and military ideas. "What emerges most strikingly from the accounts of Temür's life is his extraordinary intelligence - an intelligence not only intuitive, but intellectual. He was first of all a master politician and military strategist, able to win and keep the loyalty of his nomad followers, to work within and transform a highly fluid political structure, and to lead a huge army to conquests of unexampled scope … What is most impressive, because least expected, is the scope of Temür's intellectual interest and ability … The histories of his reign extol his knowledge of astronomy, medicine, and particularly of the history of the Arabs, Persians and Turks. His delight in debating with scholars was inexhaustible …" (Manz, The Rise and Rule of Tamerlane, pp. 16?-17). The Arab historian Ibn Khaldun met Timur, and described him as "the sultan of the universe and the ruler of the world", going on to explain to the emperor "his favourite theory, that 'asabiyah, group solidarity, was necessary for sovereignty, and the greater the number sharing the 'asabiyah , the greater the power of the sovereignty. 'You know how the power of the Arabs was established when they became united in their religion in following their Prophet'" (Gies, "The Man who met Tamerlane", Saudi Aramco World, Sept./Oct., 1978). The son of a humble broadloom weaver, the translator Joseph White was Laudian professor of Arabic at Oxford. This translation was published at the expense of the East India Company. Uncommon with a just dozen locations on Copac. Ownership inscription of Horace P. Biddle, lawyer, judge, poet, musicologist, and famous hermit of Indiana, to the title page.d

        Prolegomena zu einer jeder künftigen Metaphysik die als Wissenschaft wird auftreten können.

      Riga, bey Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, 1783. 8vo. A very nice contemporary cardboard binding with marbled paper, gilt line-decoration and gilt title-label to spine. A light, small damp stain to upper margin of first two leaves, after the attempted removal of an old owner's name (still legible, dated 1889). A very nice and clean copy. Woodcut title-vignette, woodcut rod with floral vine-headpiece on p. 3, and woodcut end-vignette (rod with leaves). 222 pp.. The rare first edition, first issue, of Kant's masterpiece, the more popular exposition of the ideas presented in his main work "Critik der reinen Vernunft" (1781). Three variants of the first edition appeared in the same year, distinguishable by head- and tailpieces; this is the first, as described in Warda, 75.This work constitutes a more comprehensible exposition of the main thoughts of Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason", and the "prolegomena", being one of the most frequently read and most approachable of his works, also became one of Kant's most influential. It is responsible for spreading his thoughts among a much wider audience than his other works. After having received immense negative critique and having been misunderstood with the first edition of the "Critique of Pure Reason", Kant wrote his "Prolegomena" as a defense and explanation; he later incorporated much of it into the second edition of the "Critique of Pure Reason". It is with the ideas expounded in this work that Kant becomes world-famous. "Kant's great achievement was to conclude finally the lines on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century, and to open up a new and more comprehensive system of dealing with the problems of philosophy... The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. - No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas...         The history of the reign of Philip the Third, King of Spain

      Dublin: Price, et al, 1783 Contemporary calf, rebacked; an excellent copy with the bookplate of the Franciscan Capuchin Library, Church Street, Dublin, on the paste-down. First Dublin edition, printed the same year as the first London edition. Divided into six books, the first deals with the life of Philip, with the remainder describing the various wars and the political state of Spain, its allies and enemies, during Philip?'s reign, from 1598-1621. A significant focus of the history recounts Spain?'s internal politics, including the expulsion of the Moriscos. A detailed and fascinating chronological work encompassing both the rise of the Spanish empire as well as the decline of its economy, all thoroughly tied to the nature and outlook of Philip and his counselors. Watson (1730-1781) was a philosopher and church minister; the book was completed after Watson?'s death by William Thomson (1746-1817), a disgraced Scottish minister and librarian to the eighth earl of Kinnoull.

        Recherches sur l'origine de l'esclavage religieux et politique du peuple en France

      S. e., Londres 1783 - In 8, pp. 54 + (2). Br. Rarissima plachetta in seconda edizione (la prima era comparsa nel 1781). L'autore spiega perche' il popolo sia rimasto comunque soggetto all'oppressione. La schiavitu' non e' scomparsa ma si presenta sotto diverse forme, c'e' stata una mera sostituzione tra gli antichi druidi e i moderni preti, per i quali si sono conservati gli stessi privilegi. Viene quindi auspicato un governo che porti all'emancipazione e all'eguaglianza di diritti. Questo Generale e letterato viene considerato un esemplare dell'ateismo sviluppatosi sulla scorta delle idee di Helvetius e D'Holbach. Moviemntata la sua vita, prima ufficiale sotto Luigi XVI, riorganizzatore delle artiglierie del Regno delle Due Sicilie, poi Generale sotto Napoleone. Esiliato dalla Francia nel 1815 e rientrato nel 1819. Plaquette considerata rarissima, un tempo considerata opera dell'Abate Rive. Bibl. Leber, Catalogue., 3680. ITA

        A Journal of Captain Cook's last voyage to the Pacific Ocean and in quest of a North-West Passage between Asia & America; Performed in the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, and 1779

      Hartford: Nathaniel Patten, 1783. First edition. Very rare map supplied in facsimile. 208 pp. 8vo. Contemporary sheep, extremities rubbed, boards a little scuffed, some minor dampstaining to the first few leaves, some light toning throughout. An unsophisticated copy and typical of American books of the era. First edition. Very rare map supplied in facsimile. 208 pp. 8vo. THE FIRST AMERICAN BOOK ON HAWAII. Rare. "This is not only the first American book on the Northwest Coast, but also the first American book on Hawaii" (Streeter). Ledyard is distinguished in many respects, he was the only American to sail on Cook's third voyage which explored Alaska and discovered Hawaii. He was also in the boat that carried Cook ashore on the morning of his death. Indeed this work contains a detailed account of Cook's death "distinguished by its evident authority" (Hill). The purpose of Cook's third voyage was two-fold. Ostensibly, it was to return Omai to his homeland in French Polynesia, but the main purpose was to search for the Northwest Passage. The Resolution and Discovery departed Plymouth in 1776 and made their way via the Cape to New Zealand and Tahiti. It was from there that Cook discovered Hawaii, which he regarded as his greatest achievement. The boats then proceeded to the Pacific Northwest and commenced their search for a route to the Atlantic. They returned to Hawaii for the winter of 1778-9. Their initial warm welcome soon wore off and tensions between the Hawaiians and the British resulted in Cook being killed on the shore of Kealakekua Bay on February 14, 1779. Charles Clerke assumed command of the expedition and proceded north once again to pursue the voyage's objective. The two ships returned to England in 1780. A Connnecticut native, after the voyage, Ledyard remained in England until 1782 when he was posted to the North American station - the Revolutionary War was ongoing. He promptly deserted and returned to Hartford where this account was published. This work preceded Rickman's by a matter of months, though in fact Ledyard made "liberal use of [the first English edition of] Rickman's account in his own narrative" (Hill). This is not to deride Ledyard unnecessarily, in addition to his account of Cook's death, his keen observations on the fur trade in the Pacific northwest are of great value. Ledyard's account is one of the rarest works on Cook's third's voyage and Hill confirms that "[o]nly a few copies still have the map." It was wanting in both the Streeter and Brooke-Hitching copies, this copy includes it in facsimile. This copy is further distinguished in being presented by Isaiah Thomas, eminent printer and founder of the American Antiquarian Society. He performed the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence and as a printer was responsible for the Massachusetts Spy (which supported Washington), the Royal American Magazine and the New England Almanac. His 1810 work History of Printing in America remains a benchmark in scholarship on the trade. The concept of "beauties" as applied to extracts from poetry and prose suitable to be anthologized for the moral benefit of youth or the entertainment of adults seems to be one that began to be popular in the mid 18th century in Britain. In the Preface the compiler asks why another anthology is needed when there are so many on the market, answering that "there cannot be too many books adapted to purposes so laudable; and it is evident from the dictates of reason and nature, that the Youthful Mind is fond of novelty." He or she extolls the size of the type and the quality of the paper, and Hugh Bair's position at the beginning of the list of authors represented in the anthology is due to his "great ability in literature, [which] aRe too well known to need any encomiums." ESTC T188139 lists this as one of the two copies it locates; the other is in the Bodleian. There are also copies in the BL and NYPL (OCLC listing is mis-dated 1873). A letter to his brother-in-law, Lewis Pintard, during Boudinot's term as President of the Continental Congress (November, 1782 - November 1783), during which the Treaty of Paris was concluded, whereby Britain recognized (among other things) American independence. Boudinot also helped ratify the Constitution in New Jersey, conducted Washington into New York for the first inauguration, served in the House of Representatives, and led the defense of Hamilton's conduct of the Treasury in 1793. He succeeded David Rittenhouse as director of the Mint in 1795, and retired in 1805. Pintard, was a successful merchant, and commissary of prisoners in New York during the American Revolution.       Wien, 1783.. Kupferstichkarte von 2 Platten von J.E. Mansfeld nach B. Hueber und J.A. Pfaundler, Bildausschnitt 115 x 65 cm.. Austria Picta 24.3; Döflinger, Österreichische Karten des 18. Jahrhunderts, p. 67. Descriptio Austria p. 180 (Tafel 58). "Nachdem der 'Bauernkartograph' Blasius Hueber (1735 - 1814) die Arbeiten an seiner großen Tirol Karte vollendet hatte, erhielt er durch kaiserliche Entschließung den ehrenvollen Auftrag, nun auch 'Vorarlberg nach dem nemlichen Maassstab, und sonst in allen anderen Stücken auf gleiche Art wie Tyrol aufzunehmen und zu mappieren'. Diese Aufgabe führe er mit einigen Unterbrechnungen zwischen Juni 1771 bis Oktober 1774, wobei ihn sein Bruder Veit, vor allem aber sein Neffe Anton Kirchebner (1750 - 1831) unterstützten. So wie bei der Aufnahme Tirols stieß man mancherorts auf Mißtrauen seitens der Bevölkerung und hatte mit ungünstiger Witterung zu kämpfen (etwa Übernachtungen unter freiem Himmel auf gefrorenem Boden). 1776 war die Reinzeichnung der Karte beendet, doch dauerte es bis 1783, ehe der Kupferstich fertig vorlag und die in Maßstab und Darstellung dem Atlas Tyrolenis gleichende Karte der Vorarlberger Herrschaften (die im Norden und Nordosten über die heutigen Landesgrenzen hinausreichten) ausgeliefert wurde." (Austria Picta, p. 324); über Jahre hinweg die genaueste Karte Vorarlbergs, viel seltener als der "Atlas Tyrolenis"; wie meist zerschnitten und alt auf Leinwand montiert, in den Ecken kleine Reisnagellöchlein, die Karte zum Schutz alt mit leichter Lackschicht überzogen, gutes Exemplar der sehr seltenen Karte.

Many poems are signed Bouflers, Voltaire. The book is divided into three parts, and the announcement title. There are several songs. Note that the theological tales are only because they depict monks and other characters from the church. The litany of Catholics are more qu'irrévérencieuses songs (Litany of St. Geneviève ...) dealing with a lightness push the saints of the church. Curiosa lovers will appreciate the truly outrageous and rather incredible in this collection that have many original pieces licenses. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale, assez rare. On y compte plusieurs chansons.

The whole book of psalms, collected into English metre.... Oxford: Pr. by T. Wright & W. Gill, 1770. 4to (28 cm, 11"). [28] ff. Large, heavy, quarto family bible — smaller and more manageable and less expensive than the large folios intended to be used at the lectern in church, but still quite substantial. These family Bibles also could contain, as in this case, the Book of Common Prayer and the "old" version metrical psalter — with the expectation that they would serve the master of the house in leading family worship. Provenance: "William Tillsons Bible" in manuscript above manuscript family records on the recto of the first blank; other family notes are recorded on its back and on the verso of the front free endpaper. Someone has taken the trouble to paste a large slip of paper onto the recto of the front free endpaper over a large ownership note that may read, "Thomas Tilison His Bible Septr 4th 1784. Contemporary calf, covers panelled in blind with remnants of clasps. Front joint open with cords strongly holding; covers abraded with incisions and leather loss to edges; spine leather dry and cracking; front fly-leaf and next blank detached. Prayer Book (only) lacking title-page and two preliminary leaves; another early leaf detached with a closed tear across, no loss of text. Bible: Foxing and brown spotting, with a few closed tears and occasional chipping in the margins, the last resulting in loss of words from a few shouldernotes. The copy described by Herbert had engravings and maps not present here; this copy is complete textually.
