REGULATIONS FOR THE ORDER AND DISCIPLINE OF THE TROOPS OF THE UNITED STATES. PART I [all published]

Hartford: Printed by Hudson and Goodwin, 1782. 138,[6]pp. plus eight folding plates. Contemporary calf. Head of spine chipped, extremities rubbed. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. Light foxing and soiling. Plate I repaired at two folds. A few small chips or edge tears to other plates. Very good. A comparatively nice copy of this important military manual, which was written expressly for the use of American troops during the Revolutionary War and first published in 1779. The German-born Steuben, well-trained in the highly disciplined military system developed under Frederick the Great, served as inspector general of the Continental Army. In this capacity he wrote his REGULATIONS FOR THE ORDER AND DISCIPLINE OF THE TROOPS OF THE UNITED STATES on orders from the Continental Congress. First published in 1779, the work became the standard text for the Continental Army and the United States Army into the early 19th century. Fifty editions, abridgements, extracts, and adaptations were printed before 1800. Steuben's contribution to American independence can not be underestimated. "He was unrivaled among the citizens of the new nation as an expert on military affairs. His introduction of European military concepts to the Continental army marks the beginning of a truly professional military tradition in the United States" - ANB. This edition was published three years after the first edition, and is one of two editions printed in Hartford circa 1782 by Hudson and Goodwin. While most references cite this imprint as having a date of 1782, the American Antiquarian Society asserts a publication date of 1787 based on an advertisement in the CONNECTICUT COURANT in March of that year. A good copy, in a contemporary binding, of an early printing of the first military manual devised for the Continental Army, a foundation work for American military history and the Revolutionary War. SHIPTON & MOONEY 44279. EVANS 20780. BRISTOL B5608. TRUMBULL, CONNECTICUT 2638. HOWES S951, "aa." SABIN 91398.

        Salmon, pl.380

One of the finest works on both German and foreign fishes ever produced. The plates were by a variety of artists and engravers and are outstandingly coloured: heightened with gold, silver, and bronze to produce the metallic sheen of the fish scales. The work was subsidised by nobility, scientific institutions and wealthy individuals. In addition the names of the fishes are given in several languages. Bloch was born in Anspach and practised as a phyisician in Berlin. He devoted himself to natural history and wrote several works of which this is the most famous. Marcus Elieser Bloch Salmon, pl.380 An original hand-coloured engraving from the "Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische" published and written by Marcus Elieser Bloch from 1782-95 Landscape 200 x 277 mm £400

The Anacreontic Song as Sung at the Crown & Anchor Tavern in the Strand the Words by Ralph Tomlinson Esqr. Late President of the Society

London: Longman & Broderip, 1782. Rare. First Edition, second issue of the melody which became known as "The Star Spangled Banner." BUC p. 1011. Fuld p. 529. RISM S3705. The first issue dates from between ca. 1771 and 1781 and has only the Cheapside address of the publisher in the imprint. The song was written in the 1770s for the Anacreontic Society, a gentlemen's club of amateur musicians in London. John Stafford Smith had a considerable reputation as a composer of glees and catches, and his tune quickly became immensely popular, especially in the United States. More than 80 settings to various texts appeared in America before 1820. Francis Scott Key (1779-1843) wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner" in 1814 to Smith's tune. In this form, the tune soon became a popular patriotic song and, with some melodic alteration, was canonized as the national anthem of the United States in 1931.. Folio. Modern marbled boards. 4 pp. Engraved. Includes versions "For the Guitar" and "For the German Flute" on p. 4. The name of John Stafford Smith is not mentioned. A very good copy.

Memoirs of the ancient Earls of Warren and Surrey, and their Descendants to the Present Time.

Fine frontis. port. of the author & 53 engraved plates (several are folding or double-page & folding and one is printed in sepia). With finely engraved head- & tailpieces & numerous engraved coats-of-arms in text. vi, 304, [16] pp.; 1 p.l., 245, [10] pp. Two vols. Large 4to, cont. English "Etruscan" binding of panelled calf, tooled in blind & gilt, a.e.g. Warrington: W. Eyres, 1782. First published edition and a most handsomely bound set of this richly illustrated work. Watson (1725-83), clergyman and antiquary, was curate in Ripponden, where he "embarked on research at the behest of Sir George Warren of Poynton Lodge, Cheshire, in order to prove that Sir George was the legitimate heir to the earldom of Warenne and Surrey. His Memoirs of the Ancient Earls of Warren and Surrey and their Descendants was published in a limited edition of six copies in 1776, with a second edition of fifteen copies following in 1779, and a third, larger, edition in 1782. Despite Watson's claim in the preface to the work, his researches were unable to establish Warren's right to the title, but this did not deter Sir George from pursuing that claim vigorously, if unsuccessfully, over the next twenty years."-ODNB. The plates depict historical portraits, notable houses, ruins, landscapes, and archeological artifacts. Fine set with the engraved armorial bookplate of George de Ligne Gregory (1740-1822), High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. A few leaves with some foxing.         Inquiries concerning the poor.

8vo., xix (1) 494pp., contemporary calf with single gilt filet on sides (bull and lozenge device), recently neatly rebacked to match with the original label preserved. A very good copy indeed from the 18th century library of John Cator* with his armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Dedicated to Lord Kames, John M'Farlan was, according to his own description, for upwards of fifteen years either an actual director or closely associated with almost all the charitable foundations of Edinburgh. His book is one of the most substantial early contributions to the study of the poor in Scotland. Sections include Inquiry into the Causes of Poverty; Inquiry into the different methods employed to provide for the Poor; Of the Poor, or Charity-Workhouses; Of different charitable foundations; Of preventing idleness, dissipation, and vice among the populace, the providing for the Poor. With considerable reference to other authorities, Richard Burn, John Gilbert and John Howard the prison reformer. "A well thought out consideration of the causes of poverty, methods of providing for the poor, and methods of checking beggars. Highly considered and often referred to". [Williams II, p.217]. * John Cator (1728-1806) was a wealthy timber merchant and landowner responsible for the layout of much of the areas around Blackheath and Beckenham, now in south-east London. M.P. for various constituencies. He was High Sheriff of Kent in 1780-1. One of his first acts as a property developer was to commission Beckenham Park Place, a Palladian-style mansion much admired by Samuel Johnson.

Letters of the late Ignatius Sancho, an African.

Two vols. in one, 8vo., with a fine engraved portrait of Sancho by F. Bartolozzi after a painting by Gainsborough in vol.I, and an engraved allegorical frontispiece in vol.II, also by Francesco Bartolozzi, (4) ii v - lvii (1) 22 (2) 23 - 204 and (4) 224pp., complete with both half-titles and with the additional leaf *C4 in vol.I, contemporary calf, neatly and appropriately rebacked, spine gilt and labelled. A very good copy originally owned by one of the subscribers, with her signature 'M. Bouchery' on front free endpaper. A landmark in Anglo-African literature which Blockson considered to be "indispensable to the study of black literature" [A commented bibliography of 101 influential books by and about people of African descent, p.16]. Sancho was, almost immediately after his death in 1780, adopted by the English abolitionists, his Letters being cited by the abolitionist movement as an "outstanding refutation of the idea that black people lacked souls, intellects or rational faculties". [R. King et al. Ignatius Sancho, An African man of letters. 1997, p.67.] The Sancho story is probably well known. He was "born aboard a slave ship en route to the West Indies from Guinea. He was brought to England at the age of two by his master and was presented to three spinster sisters living in Greenwich. He acted as their servant for years and later became a grocer in Charles Street, Westminster, dying in 1780. Published through the kindness of benevolent patrons to demonstrate what a black could accomplish when given an opportunity." [Ragatz p.548]. While in London, he "attracted the attention of the Duke of Montagu who had among his diversions his interests in testing whether, by proper cultivation and a proper tuition at school and the university, an African might not be found as capable of literature as a white person. Sancho, who for twenty years of his life served as the Duke's butler, was Montagu's first prot?g?". [Blockson p.16]. The Memoirs or Life included, in vol.I. (pp.v - xvi) of "the extraordinary negro" were written by Joseph Jekyll (1754-1837), the lawyer and politician, who stepped in for Dr. Johnson after Johnson had failed to deliver his promised memoir of the life of Sancho which had been commissioned. Jekyll wrote his own brief account, which is the best single source of information about Sancho's life, "in imitation of Dr. Johnson's style" [Stephen M. Lee in ODNB].

I-II. Berlin & Stettin, [Nicolai], 1782. 8:o. Front,(6),219,(1) pp. + front,249,(4) pp. Two volumes, nice contemporary yellow paper boards, entirely uncut, handwritten titles on spine. Bindings rather worn and soiled, sections of paper missing from spine, head of spine chipped. Frontispiece to the second volume mounted on paper. Small hole in pp. 197-98 costing a few letters. Engraved bookplate of Friedrich Nicolai on front pastedown of both volumes. Numerous annotations by the author throughout and annotations by a Swedish book collector on front flyleaf and pastedown. Lacking one preliminary leaf in part II, see below.. Raabe (1983) 253. Becker 203. Kloss 2232. Taute 827. Wolfstieg 5138. Part I is in the "Zweyte verbesserte Auflage". The first edition was published earlier the same year. Raabe states that this second edition was published in 1783. This copy lacks the half title to the second part, a leaf not noted by Raabe, Kloss, Taute or Wolfstieg. Provenance: 1. Christoph Friedrich Nicolai (1782-1811). 2. Unknown Swedish collector (after 1828?). 3. Arne Nilsson, Sandviken, Sweden (1983?-2012). A most desirable copy of this work, written by one of Germany's leading intellectuals in the late 18-th century. Nicolai was a high-rank freemason and a member of the Bavarian Illuminati. This is his own copy of his work on the history of the Templars and the origins of Freemasonry. Nicolai's relation to the Freemasons and other secret orders and societies was complex. On one hand, he supported the aspects of their activity that were in accordance with the ideas of the Enlightenment: humanism, tolerance and brotherhood regardless of nationality or social status. On the other hand, he was strongly opposed to the secrecy and mysticism, their strong hierarchical order and, in certain cases, connections to the Jesuits and the Papacy. This "Versuch" is one of the first attempts to give a correct historical understanding of the subject, based on historical sources which are often interpreted in a surprisingly modern way. In the spirit of Enlightenment, Nicolai attempts to free the history of the author's personal agenda and prejudices. He does not hesitate to bring up sensitive issues, e.g. alleged homosexuality among the medieval templars or the influence of Islam on Christian beliefs. When the first part was published, he was criticised by his contemporaries, most notably by Herder. In the second part he admits some errors, but defends his main standpoints as based on well documented historical facts. Eventually, the revealing of secrets and refutation of legends through this work forced Nicolai to resign from his masonic lodge "Zu den drei Weltkugeln". In this copy, Nicolai has made more than 120 annotations in the text and margins, ranging from corrections of small typographical errors to lengthy commentaries, additions and corrections. There are also three small pieces of paper with annotations pasted to inside of front board and p. 207 in the first volume. Some of the corrections are the same as the ones listed in the "Zusätze und Druckfehler" at the end of volume II, but even here, Nicolai's annotations differ at some points. Only about 25 of the annotations are taken from the list, which leaves about 100 annotations presumably unique to this copy. In addition to this, there are about two dozen smaller corrections that seem to be in another contemporary hand. As many volumes from the Nicolai library, the book is bound in yellow paper covered boards. Peter Jörg Becker finds them ugly ("Teile seiner Bibliothek ließ er in häßliches gelbes Papier binden, um sie besser beschriften zu können") but we must disagree, we find them quite charming. Due to the fact that this copy is uncut, the handwritten memo of the bookbinder is still preserved in the outer margin of the first title leaf. The library of Friedrich Nicolai, estimated to include over 16000 volumes, was the largest private library in Berlin in its time. In the decades following his death, it was sold and donated by his relatives to various German institutions and collectors. Around 800 volumes Masonica was sold in 1854 by Nicolai's grandson Gustav Parthey to the masonic lodge "Zu den drei Weltkugeln", but these two volumes seem to have taken a different path. On the rear pastedown of volume I there is a small old price notation "1-2 4 Mark". Front pastedown and flyleaf has text written in Swedish in a neat hand. It's probably written in the first half of the 19th century, but not before 1828 since there is a reference to the third volume of Lenning's "Encyclopädie der Freimaurerei", which was published in 1828. The volumes also carry shelfmarks "IG5.", a note (acquisition by Arne Nilsson?) "20/5. 83 2 vol B" and one additional small price notation, all in pencil

Oktober 1749 in Rudolstadt; gest. 19.

C. Vivanti, DBI III (1961), pp. 789 - 793.

Unsigned, Intriguing, and Possibly Secret, Manuscript Note Concerning the Treaty of Paris 1782-1783

No Binding. Very Good. small folio, one page, formerly folded, top edge lightly browned, else very good. Text neatly inscribed in ink on laid paper. The sheet, judging from the fold marks was evidently folded into a very small triangle of just over an inch in size, possibly for easy concealment and transmittal. he present document is both intriguing and curious it discusses the Treaty of Paris and contains information which poses several intriguing questions: the document states that Peace would be signed on the 19th at six o'clock in the evening and with conditions which differed somewhat from the terms of the final treaty. The preliminary articles of peace were not signed until November 30, 1782, the final Treaty ending the War was signed on September 3, 1783. The terms mentioned in this manuscript differ from the final document. The questions posed by this document are: Does the present document discuss a preliminary draft? Is it incorrect or secretly transmitted information from the private negotiations? Is it deliberate misinformation? The Definitive Treaty of Peace was signed at Paris, September 3, 1783. This treaty between Great Britain and the United States marked the final consummation of American independence. Coincidentally were signed peace treaties between Great Britain and each of two other belligerents, France, the ally of the United States, and Spain, the ally of France. A preliminary peace between Great Britain and the Netherlands (no one's ally) had been signed on September 2, 1783. The definitive treaties marked the end of a complicated negotiation in Paris between Great Britain and her several enemies, begun in March, 1782, by the Rockingham Ministry, and continued by the government of Lord Shelburne through its agent, Richard Oswald, who had conducted the American negotiation from the first, and other British diplomatic officers. It was featured by the separately negotiated preliminary and conditional articles of peace between the United States and Great Britain, signed Nov. 30, 1782, which were not to go into effect until peace should be signed between the American ally France, and the common enemy, Great Britain. France, in turn, deferred her peace until her ally, Spain, should have also reached a settlement with Great Britain. The French and Spanish preliminaries were signed on Jan. 2, 1783, on which date the American preliminaries went into effect, and a general armistice took place pending signature of a final and definitive treaty of peace. The three sets (Anglo-American, Anglo- French and Anglo-Spanish) of preliminary articles of peace were thus in the nature of armistice agreements which accompanied a cessation of hostilities but did not end the legal state of war. The definitive treaties, which ended the war, were deferred for several months in the hope of securing more concessions from the British, and to give the Dutch time to make a satisfactory peace with Great Britain. The Anglo-Dutch preliminary articles of peace were signed on Sept. 2, 1783, and the next day the definitive treaties American, Fr

Volume 1 describes the travel Circumnavigation qu'effectua Pagès by the west for 4 years. After Louisiana, Texas Pagès crossed in leaving his ship in Santo Domingo, he traveled on the Mississippi. This is the earliest known description of Texas in an English-language book (when the book was translated). Pagès crossed Mexico, then went to the Phillipine and Java, in Mumbai and Surat, finally in Arabia, dating back to Saint John of Acre. Travel is also made by land and by sea, and the author has gleaned number of observations about the customs and manners of the people he has rubbed. The second volume is dedicated to two trips to the south pole (considerations of the Hottentots, the meeting) then north. 432pp. et 272pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LAWS ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, OF THE STATE OF SOUTH-CAROLINA, WHICH COMMENCED AT JACKSONBURGH, ON TUESDAY, THE EIGHTH DAY OF JANUARY, IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD, ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-TWO...TO WEDNESDAY, THE TWENTY-SIXTH DAY OF FEBRUARY, IN THE SAID YEAR [caption title]

[Parker's Ferry or Jacksonburgh, S.C.: Nathan Childs or David Rogers, 1782. Folio. Antique-style three quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt, leather label. Short repaired tear, and contemporary ownership signature, on initial leaf, minor staining and spotting to first few leaves, light foxing. Very good. A rare Revolutionary South Carolina imprint recording the acts passed in the January/February session of the South Carolina General Assembly in 1782. It was surmised by Evans to have been printed in Charleston by Ann Timothy, but given that the British did not evacuate the city until December 1782 it is more likely that, as Gould and Morgan suggest, the work may have been printed by Nathan Childs at Parker's Ferry or by David Rogers at Jacksonsburgh, or that it may have been printed outside South Carolina.

Paris: Lamy, 1782. - 12mo., (5 ¼ x 3 ¼ inches). Contemporary full mottled calf, the smooth spine in six gilt-ruled compartments, maroon morocco gilt lettering piece in one and gilt-tooled in the rest, all edges speckled (hinges starting, extremities worn with loss). Provenance: With the pictorial bookplate of H. Pasquier to the front pastedown. ?Second edition, first published in ?1692. A treatise on the cultivation of orange and lemon trees. Pierre Morin, along with his brother René, was one of the most notable 17th-century flower traders and nurserymen. He was well known for his oval-shaped garden, which was written about by many of his contemporaries. "Pierre Morin published his first trade catalogue in 1651. It contained a list of names and descriptions of the bulbs then flowering in his garden that he was able to supply for sale. Morin then, as nurserymen today, intended his catalogue for customers living at a distance, who were unable to view the growing flowers for themselves, to show what he had on offer. It contained 100 named varieties of tulip, 24 ranunculi, 71 bulbous irises and 27 anemones, both double and single varieties, all among the most fashionable flower of the day. He updated the catalogue in 1655, when he had it reprinted, rearranging and enlarging the previous lists, and adding many more anemones. This was again reprinted in 1658 when, on the final page, he announced that he now had many more rare plants, of which he had not yet had time to make detailed lists, as they had only come to him recently on the death of his brother René, whom he described as having been 'as curious as any in all Europe' "On 4 April 1644 [diarist John Evelyn] wrote that Morin was 'a person who from an ordinary Gardner, is ariv'd to be one of the most skillfull & Curious Persons of France for his rare collection of Shells, Flowers & Insects. His Garden is of an exact Oval figure planted with Cypresse, cut flat & set as even as a Wall could have form'd it: The Tulips, Anemonies, Ranunculus's, Crocus's &c. being of the most exquisite, were held for the rarest in the World'" (Prudence Leith-Ross, "A Seventeenth-Century Paris Garden").         REFLEXIONES IMPARCIALES SOBRE LA HUMANIDAD DE LOS ESPAÑOLES EN LAS INDIAS, CONTRA LOS PRETENDIDOS FILOSOFOS Y POLITICOS

Madrid: Por D. Joachin Ibarra..., 1782. Large quarto. Contemporary red morocco, tooled in gilt with coat of arms stamped in gilt on cover, blue watered silk endpapers, a.e.g. Lightly rubbed at extremities, some minor staining to boards. Small bookplate on front pastedown. Minor staining to last few text leaves. Negligible foxing. Else very good. The first Spanish edition, translated from the original Italian written by an exiled Spanish Jesuit. Nuix weighs in on the controversy surrounding Spanish treatment of the native population in the Americas. Though he recognizes the violence perpetrated against the Indians, he defends Spanish colonialism as a grand and greater good brought to the Americas. This is a large paper copy of this important work, bound in full red morocco especially for Charles III, King of Spain (1759-88). The covers are stamped with the royal coat of arms. A discrete 19th-century bookplate of the Baroness Rothschild adorns the front pastedown, showing the embossed arms of the Rothschild family. Large paper copies of this work are exceedingly rare, and certainly none have so fine a provenance as this. PALAU 196692. SABIN 56309. MEDINA 5007.

Unsigned, Intriguing, and Possibly Secret, Manuscript Note Concerning the Treaty of Paris 1782-1783

      - small folio, one page, formerly folded, top edge lightly browned, else very good. Text neatly inscribed in ink on laid paper. The sheet, judging from the fold marks was evidently folded into a very small triangle of just over an inch in size, possibly for easy concealment and transmittal. he present document is both intriguing and curious it discusses the Treaty of Paris and contains information which poses several intriguing questions: the document states that Peace would be signed on the 19th at six o¿clock in the evening and with conditions which differed somewhat from the terms of the final treaty. A preliminary peace between Great Britain and the Netherlands (no one¿s ally) had been signed on September 2, 1783.
