La boîte renfermait ces deux vers : Vous rendez à la reine un si parfait hommage, que vous méritez bien d'en posséder l'image." With some marginal stains and restorations, the stains slightly affecting a word or two in the lower outside corner of some pages, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding fine.         ACTS PASSED AT A GENERAL ASSEMBLY, BEGUN AND HOLDEN AT JACKSONSBURGH, IN THE STATE OF SOUTH-CAROLINA, ON TUESDAY THE EIGHTH DAY OF JANUARY, IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-TWO...TO TUESDAY, THE TWENTY-SIXTH DAY OF FEBRUARY, IN THE SAID YEAR

[Philadelphia]: John Dunlap, 1782. 46pp. Folio. Antique-style three quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt, leather label. Ink ownership inscription, small repair, and small area of loss to top edge of titlepage (not affecting text), some dampstaining, first half of the page numbers re-numbered by hand in ink. Very good. A scarce Revolutionary imprint recording the acts passed in the January/February session of the South Carolina General Assembly in 1782. It is apparently John Dunlap's only devoted printing of a South Carolina legal work. A likely reason for Dunlap's involvement with the printing involves the British occupation of Charleston, which lasted from the Spring of 1780 until December 1782. Printing by the revolutionaries in British-occupied Charleston, especially of official American legislative publications, would surely have been tough to accomplish.         An Authentic Narrative of a Voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty's Ships Resolution and Discovery, during the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780; in search of a North-West Passage... including a faithful Account of all their Discoveries, and the unfortunate Death of Captain Cook...

London: G. Robinson, J. Sewell; and J. Debrett, 1782. Two volumes, octavo, with a folding chart and 21 engraved plates; a fine copy in contemporary gilt calf. First edition: an attractive set of this rare account - the second account to appear in English - of Cook's third voyage: 'an important supplement to the official account, which it preceded by two years' (Forbes). Ellis, surgeon's mate and talented amateur artist, sailed first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution. During the voyage he was thought of (by Captain Clerke) as a 'very worthy young man'. On his return he was in financial straits and, despite the prohibition by the Admiralty of the publication of any unauthorised account of the voyage, sold his narrative to a London publisher for fifty guineas. The book was published over his name, and was thus the first account of the expedition to acknowledge its authorship, earning the condemnation of Sir Joseph Banks, who wrote to him in January 1782 that 'I fear it will not in future be in my power to do what it might have been, had you asked and followed my advice'. Ellis' narrative contains much valuable information on Alaska, the Northwest Coast, and Hawaii, and the attractive engraved plates, after the author's drawings, include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska, and three of the Northwest Coast. The plates show Ellis to have been a talented amateur artist, and represent a significant contribution to the graphic record of the voyage. They 'are among the earliest published on the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska, and the Northwest' (Hill). Choris' famous views did not appear until almost forty years later. Ellis' views of Hawaii provide the first general depictions of the islands, as Rickman's book, published in the previous year, showed only the death of Cook while Zimmermann's account was not illustrated. There is a chapter devoted to their visit to Van Diemen's Land in January 1777, in the course of which Ellis painted a famous watercolour view of Adventure Bay, now in the National Library of Australia.Ellis died in 1785 after a fall from the main mast of a ship lying at Ostend. Joints expertly repaired.

        Voyages Autour du Monde

1782 - et Vers les Deux Poles par Terre et par Mer, Pendant les Années 1767, 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771, 1773, 1774 & 1775.First edition. 2 vols. Seven large folding engraved maps (including one showing Texas & Mexico), one large folding & 2 other folding plates. 8vo. Fine contemporary French mottled calf, red morocco labels to spines, these richly gilt, marbled edges, marbled endpapers, neat library stamp to lower outer margin of half titles. [iv], [5]-432; [iv], [5]-272pp. Paris, Chez Moutard, Born in Toulouse in 1748 the author of this extraordinary work joined the French Navy in 1766 and was posted to St. Domingo. Obtaining leave to travel he sailed to New Orleans and thence up the Mississippi, continuing up the Red River to Nachitoches by canoe. From there he travelled overland through Texas to San Antonio before going on to Mexico City and Acapulco where he took a passage to Guam and then Manilla. Unable to visit China, he voyaged westward through the Straits of Malacca to Muscat and up through the Persian Gulf, finally reaching Marseilles in December, 1771. An ?inveterate traveller? (Clark), Pagès was selected to join the unsuccessful second voyage of Kerguelen in search of the ?Great South Land? in 1773. Since Kerguelen was dismissed from the service and imprisoned, and his account suppressed, the good account of the voyage which Pagès gives is particularly important. It is in some respects fuller than Kerguelen's own, but never once mentions his captain's name, evidently owing to the trouble that had occurred. To complete his travels Pagès sailed in a Dutch whaler to the north of Spitzbergen. After service in the American war he made a second voyage round the world and eventually retired to his estate in St. Domingo where he was killed in the slave uprising of 1793. The author's journey through Texas occupies about sixty pages of this work, and is illustrated by Plate 2, which is entitled Carte d'une Partie de l'Amérique Séptentrionale, qui contient partie de la Nle. Espagne, et de la Louisiane (approx. 315 by 415mm). The map shows New Orleans and the Red River as far North as Nachitoches in the upper right quadrant, with ?Province de los Texas? to the West, and Mexico, as far South as Acapulco on the Pacific coast, beyond. In addition the tribal lands of Native Americans are marked, including those of the Apaches and Tegas. cf. Hill 1285; Sabin, 58168; Clark I, 285. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Reinforcing of margins on verso. Charring along left margin of page resulting in some loss of text. Slight paper loss at bottom left and right side. Fair condition with a large, bold signature. <br /><br />In full, <I>“Under the sketch of … of British property which you ret’d … office. I should have been glad that you have added the dates of the sales to your returns”</I><br /><br />Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer (1723-1790) was a Maryland-born Politician as well as one of America’s Founding Fathers. The letter is dated 1782, which signifies that it was written during Jenifer’s last year a representative for Maryland in the Continental Congress. At the date of writing Jenifer was also manager of Maryland’s finances. The letter itself is concerning an issue about the terms of sale, of what ostensibly was seized British property. Jenifer himself was a prominent landholder and lived on a large plantation. The managerial and financial expertise he acquired throughout his life lent itself to the formation of strong opinions regarding the ideal role of the central government. In fact, he would argue five years later to his fellow delegates at the Constitutional Convention that a strong central government was necessary for the financial and commercial stability of the United States. <br /><br />Included is a past auction tag from Samuel T. Freeman & Company with a description of the item.<br />
