Cadell in the Strand, 1782. First edition. Five 12mo. volumes. [ii],293;263;365;328;398 pp. Worn contemporary bindings of quarter calf with marbled sides, decorative rules gilt-stamped to spines. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Philip Earl de Grey (1781-1859) in all volumes. In general, spines have darkened and are flaking in places; gilt- stamped spine numerals have dulled so that only one is still readable; and, only one volume retains its gilt-stamped black label on spine. In particular, the backstrip of Vol. 1 has a vertical split near the center, a chip at the crown, and has been glued down; its top board is nearly off and is attached by the sewing cords. Upper joints of Vols. 2 & 3 are starting. Text leaves show intermittent light foxing but are generally clean. One signature (B) in Vol. 2 is slightly sprung at the bottom. In Vol. 4, one leaf (E2, p. 99-100) is missing the bottom fore-corner (but all text is intact) and a few leaves in one signature (L) have a small puncture at the inner margin. One leaf (E7) in Vol. 5 has short closed tear in margin. The bindings are fragile but the bookblocks and text leaves are better than very good. (CBEL, ii, p. 527). Cecilia was Burney's second novel to be published anonymously and, like Evelina, it was both a critical and popular success. Among her contemporary admirers were Dr. Johnson, Edmund Burke, and Joshua Ryenolds. Her accute social observations and the touches of light comedy in her early work were a model for the succeeding generation of female writers, notably Maria Edgeworth and Jane Austen. It was in the concluding pages of Cecilia that Austen found the title of her first novel, Pride and Prejudice. (DNB).

calf and sheep. Some covers detached, but mostly sound. Comprised of 15 titles of historical or religious works in 22 volumes with 24 SIGNATURES by Boudinot as well as several annotations by him and a few signatures of his brother Elisha. Elias Boudinot, an American revolutionary statesman serving as commissary-general of prisoners and colonel in the continental army (he was with George Washington at Valley Forge), as well as president (1782-1783) and secretary for foreign affairs of the Continental Congress, signed the treaties of peace with Great Britain and of alliance with the French king. He also helped ratify the United States Constitution in New Jersey and conducted Washington into New York for the first inauguration. He was a member of the House of Representatives, second director of the U.S. Mint (1795-1805), and the first counsellor named by the United States Supreme Court. Boudinot was also a trustee and benefactor of Princeton University and a founder and first president of the American Bible Society. Perhaps his two best known books are The Age of Revelation (1790), a reply to Thomas Paine, and A Star in the West, or a Humble Attempt to Discover the Long Lost Ten Tribes of Israel (1816), an attempt to prove that the American Indians may be the lost tribes. A unique opportunity to acquire a significant portion of an important colonial library. Details upon request.

Della Architettura, Della Pittura e Della Statua .... Traduzione di Cosimo Bartoli

Bologna: Instituto della Scienza. 1782. Hardcover. Contemporary full vellum with leather spine label bearing gilt titles, vellum worn at spine ends and corners, some worming to boards, old ink signature to upper board, old catalogue entry pasted to ffep, title vignette and several engraved head & tail pieces by Panfili, illustrated with sixty nine engraved plates of which four are folding, text in Italian. A good 18th c. edition of Bartoli's translation, which was first published in 1550, with the plates based on Leoni's lavish London edition of 1726. , Leon Batista Alberti (1404-1472) was a renaissance polymath who is often referred to as an architect but whose learning and achievements were in fact far wider and his life is described in Vasari's 'Lives of the most excellent painters, sculptors and architects'. Alberti regarded mathematics as the common ground of both art and of the sciences. His focus on mathematics is evident in some of his other works, for instance he wrote a pioneering treatise on cryptography, but is apparent in all his work on art, architecture and sculpture where he focuses on geometry and on an idea of 'harmony' that can be traced back to Pythagoras. For Alberti beauty in art was the result of "the harmony of all parts in relation to one another," and subsequently "this concord is realized in a particular number, proportion, and arrangement demanded by harmony.", Folio 13" - 23" tall, [ii] xii [iii] 341 [iii] pp .

Album of Paper Weaving examples prepared for children's instruction. European, possibly Scandinavian, circa 1880

Bound in leather-backed boards with cloth corners. 5" x 8." Concertina album, comprised of thirty-six leaves, each with a single or multiple paper-weaving patterns, most in blue and white, some with black added. Each pattern has a border of gilt beaded paper. Spine rubbed, 1 1/2" split along back joint, tears in the paper covering the boards. A good copy, with the weaving patterns very good and clean. Froebel (1782-1852), the German educationist, is well known for inventing the concept of the kindergarten. In the 1849s he devised the idea of twenty occupational "gifts" for children, including Number 14, Paper-Weaving. Many albums like this one were compiled in the nineteenth century as teaching aids for the use of kindergartens in Europe and America. With their intricate patterns, albums of this sort have been seen as precursors of the abstract design movement in art of the twentieth century, as personified in the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Mondrian, Braque, Le Corbusier, Albers and Fuller.

An Authentic Narrative of a Voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty's Ships Resolution and Discovery during the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779 and 1780

London: G. Robinson, 1782. 2 volumes in one, 8vo. (8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches). Half-titles lacking. Engraved folding map, 21 engraved plates. Modern antique calf, spine with raised bands in 5 compartments, red morocco lettering piece in the second, others with a repeat decoration in gilt. First edition of a rare account of Cook's third voyage, preceding the official account by two years and containing "among the earliest published [illustrations] on the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska and the Northwest" (Hill). Ellis, the surgeon's mate aboard the Discovery and later the Resolution, here gives the second published account in English of Captain Cook's monumental third voyage (preceded by only Rickman). Although the publication of journals from the voyage was prohibited by the Admiralty, Ellis upon his return sold his narrative to a bookseller for fifty guineas who printed the account using Ellis's name, much to the disappointment of Joseph Banks and others who had considered Ellis a promising young officer. Ellis was a keen observer and gives an accurate account of the voyage, with many details on Hawaii, Alaska and the Northwest coast of America published here for the first time. The author was also a talented artist, and the fine plates are engraved after Ellis's own drawings, including among the earliest views of Hawaii. "His descriptions reflect his artist's eye and form an important supplement to the official account" (Forbes). Ellis died in 1785 after a fall from the main mast of a ship lying at Ostend. Beaglehole, III, p. ccvii; Beddie, 1599; Davidson, 'A Book Collector's Notes', p. 66; Hill, 555; Hocken, pp. 20-21; Holmes, 42; Judd, 59; Kroepelien, 399; Lada-Mocarski, 35; Forbes 41.

His success was meteoric and within just seven years he had purchased an estate for 3,000 which he named "Etruria" on which he sited his factories and built his mansion Etruria Hall. Although he had had very little formal education he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1783. On May 9th 1782 he communicated this paper to the Royal Society. Here Wedgwood describes the construction and use of a pyrometer, an ingenious invention for determining and registering high temperatures by the measurement of the shrinkage suffered by cylinders of prepared clay in the furnace or kiln. In the opening paragraph Wedgwood sets out the nature of the problem: "A measure for the higher degrees of heat, such as the common Thermometers afford for the lower ones, has ever been a desideratum, both to the philosopher and the practical artist. Most of those productions of art, which owe their existence to the action of fire, have their beauty and value essentially influenced by minute deficiencies or excesses of heat; and the artist is frequently precluded from availing himself of the advantages which might result even from his own experiments, where the heat has passed under his own eye, by not being able to ascertain the degree of such heat; much more so from those of others, who have no means of communicating to him even the imperfect ideas which they have themselves of the heat made use of in their operations. The common distinctions of red, bright red, and white heat are, as will appear hereafter, totally inadequate to the purpose; they are by far too indeterminate, and of too great latitude; the brightness or luminousness of fire increasing, with its force, through numerous gradations, which can neither be expressed in words nor discriminated by the eye." Wedgwood published very little and almost all of his handful of publications are very rare. This paper, revealing his principles of experimentation and combining scientific knowledge with his practical experience as a potter, provides valuable insight into the mind and way of working of one of the most influential figures of the industrial revolution. Other papers in this volume include: FITZGERALD (Keane) Experiments with Chinese Hemp Seed, pp.46-49; WILSON (Patrick) An Experiment Proposed for Determining, by the Aberration of the Fixed Stars, Whether the Rays of Light, in Pervading Different Media, Change Their Velocity according to the Law Which Results from Sir Isaac Newton's Ideas concerning the Cause of Refraction; And for Ascertaining Their Velocity in Every Medium Whose Refractive Density is Known, pp.58-70; HERSCHEL: On the Parallax of the Fixed Stars, pp.82-111; AND: Catalogue of Double Stars.         Tulipes [Pl. 22]

Paris: chez Bance et Schroth, editeurs, rue du Mail, No. 5., Beautifully hand-coloured lithograph. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition. A tiny tear in the bottom right corner of the sheet. 20 1/8 x 15 5/8 inches. A rare lithograph of a bouquet of tulips after a painting by Pierre- Joseph Redouté. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's "functional" understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and which he perfected in his masterpiece Les Liliacées. Redouté's talents as a flower painter are magnificently exemplified in this stunning bouquet of tulips. Since the majority of Redouté's work was executed in stipple, this superb lithograph is a fascinating and rare print. It is not only a lovely example of early lithography but also a magnificent example of Redouté's delicate painting.
