Autograph musical manuscript signed of the Sonata in Eb Major for solo keyboard. Complete. No date, but ca. 1782 or later

. [1] (title), [2]-[8] pp. Folio (ca. 300 x 230 mm.). Unbound. Notated in ink on 16-stave music manuscript paper. The work is in three movements, the first, marked "Allegro," in 82 measures; the second 70 measures; and the third, marked "Rondeau Allegretto," in 210 measures. 14 measures cancelled. Overpaste corrections to a total of 10 measures, with several additional corrections.. The present manuscript is Viotti's arrangement of his Sonata for Violin and Bass (Giazotto no. 36), composed in Paris in 1782. While there are published editions of the version for violin and bass (see RISM V1940- V1946), there do not appear to be any published editions of this version for keyboard. A highly distinguished Italian violinist and composer, Viotti is regarded as "the most influential violinist between Tartini and Paganini and the last great representative of the Italian tradition stemming from Corelli. He is considered the founder of the 'modern' (19th- century) French school of violin playing, and his compositions, among the finest examples of Classical violin music, exerted a strong influence on 19th-century violin style."         Important Manuscript Document

Spanish Town, Jamaica: , 1782 Spanish Town, Jamaica, 1782. unbound. 2 pages (front and back), 7.75 x 7.75 inches, Head Quarters, Spanish Town, Jamaica, October 26, 1782, a rare General Order allocating munitions to British soldiers in the defense of Spanish Town, in part: "...The ammunition of the several Regiments to be completed immediately to 200 rounds per man for service, packed up in kegs, or boxes, containing each from six hundred to six hundred and fifty Cartridges...to be fixed or slung on Pack Saddles. Things to be provided for this purpose...pieces of painted cloth to preserve the ammunition from Rain. The expense to be charged in the Regiment contingent accounts. The camp equipage of each Regiment to be also completed and every preparation made for taking the Field in the shortest notice. The Regiments will report when they are completed and in readiness agreeable to this Order." This document was issued one year after Yorktown and six months after the British victory at the Battle of the Saints, April 12, 1782. With the war having moved from North America to the West Indies, the British had to encounter a joint French-Spanish fleet whose intention was to conquer Jamaica. The Battle of the Saints is extremely important in naval history; by far the biggest fought at sea in the American War of Independence. As can be seen by this document, the British Regiments in Spanish Town were in a constant state of High Alert, a condition that lasted until November 30, 1782 when England and the United States signed the preliminary Articles of Peace. On verso: Extraordinary Manuscript Document, the proper form to be made-use-of "by Officers when they apply to their respective Commanding Officers for leave to sell their Commissions." In small part: "I beg you will obtain for me His Majesty's Consent to the sale of my Commission of________and it is my intentions to hereby resign all rights and position to any future rank or Promotion in the Army, and I do further declare, and certify, upon the Word and Honor of an Officer and a Gentleman, that I have not demanded, or accepted, neither will I demand or accept_______more than the sum of_____Pounds Sterling, being the price limited or fixed by His Majesty's Regulation, as the full value of the said Commission." Undoubtedly, any British Officer filling out this form in 1782 could only have been a veteran of the disastrous American Revolution. Once the sale of his Commission was complete, the former British Officer would take his proceeds and await voyage back to England. Slight chipping along the left edge; still very good condition.

Engraved frontis. port., engraved vignettes on titles & 67 magnificent engraved plates (many folding or double-page). Two vols. Large folios, cont. calf, spines gilt. Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1782-83. [bound with]: --Supplément. Eleven magnificent engraved plates (many folding). Large folio, orig. boards. Paris: Didot & Jombert, 1789. First edition and a very fine set of this splendid and handsomely illustrated book. "Jean Rodolphe Perronet is the father of modern bridge building and in his hands the masonry bridge reached technical and aesthetic perfection. He discarded the traditional rules of thumb, instead developing a fundamentally scientific approach to bridge design, and his precepts as laid down in this work have been followed ever since... "While working on Hupeau's bridge at Mantes (begun 1757) Perronet, observing the movement of piers during construction, satisfied himself that in a completed multi-arch bridge adjacent arches thrust against each other and the piers only carry a vertical load. Traditionally, wide piers were needed only because each arch was built separately. Perronet realised that if he built all the arches at the same time and struck their centring simultaneously he could substantially reduce the size and cost of the piers and foundations. In his own bridge at Neuilly (begun 1768) he pioneered this revolutionary method of construction, the practical confirmation of theories advanced by earlier writers. Furthermore, he appreciated that arches could be very much shallower if the abutments were made capable of carrying the higher thrust. His next, and most radical, bridge at Pont-Sainte-Maxence (begun 1772) had a rise to span ratio of 1:11 as against the traditional 1:5, thus giving to the masonry bridge an entirely new architectural form. In this book all these bridges are described and very beautifully illustrated together with Perronet's best-known structure, the Pont de la Concorde in Paris. The single-arch bridge at Nogent, where he observed, measured and recorded the deflection of the arch after decentring, is also included. There is a lengthy description of Hupeau's earlier bridge at Orléans (begun 1751), partly because its foundations are similar to those of Mantes and Neuilly and partly to illustrate the machinery used in its construction, such as archimedean screws, chain pumps &c., which give a clear picture of contemporary building techniques. Perronet himself had developed a water-wheel at Neuilly, which, driven by the river current, powered the pumps, pile-drivers and installations. The volumes also contain the series of 'Mémoires' on pile foundations, centring, thickness of piers and so on, in which his basic design philosophy is demonstrated, together with some reports on the surveying of the Canal de Bourgogne and on Paris water supply schemes."-Elton, Cat. 15, 75. A fine and handsome set. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica. Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 249. Timoshenko, History of Strength of Materials, p. 42-"His memoirs were widely read by structural engineers." .

PLOCACOSMOS: OR THE WHOLE ART OF HAIR DRESSING

Printed for the author, London 1782 - An Untrimmed(!) Copy of an 18th Century Book Telling Everything There Is To Know about Hair. 254 x 152 mm (10 x 6"). 3 p.l. (lacking half title), 485, [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. A recent replica binding of blue paper boards backed with light gray paper spine and paper label, edges untrimmed. Engraved frontispiece illustrating Shakespeare's "Seven Ages of Man" printed in sanguine, and 10 PLATES OF ELABORATE AND FREQUENTLY FANTASTICAL HAIRSTYLES, engraved on copper by Delegal. Colas 2802; Hiler, p. 816; Lipperheide 1681. Two short marginal tears to frontispiece, the text printed on paper a shade less than bright, occasional minor foxing or smudges to the (very generous) margins, other trivial imperfections, but an excellent copy of a book normally found in an undesirable state, the leaves and plates clean and fresh, and the replica binding as new. Published for ladies' maids and valets as well as that less fortunate woman who relied on her own hands for hairstyling, this work supplies "ample rules . . . [and] directions" for arranging and preserving hair, along "with a history of the hair and head dress, from the earliest ages to the present time, particularly as they have appeared upon the English stage" during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Our author/hairdresser James Stewart offers a comprehensive analysis of hair's growth, nature, and color as well as the various products, cosmetics, and wigs that might be used in hair care, styling, and replacement. No doubt to widen the potential customer base for the book, its protracted subtitle goes on to inform us that "the plan of this work requiring it, there are also complete rules for the management of children and education of youth; and excellent rules for the preservation of the health and happiness of age; being a guide through the seven ages of man: the whole interspersed with moral thoughts, being necessary for all families." Stewart has illustrated this work with some of his elegant and fanciful creations for both men and women, the latter evidencing his (intuitive) belief in the old Southern maxim, "The higher the hair, the closer to God." He employs actresses for his examples, and throws in occasionally unkind commentary on the personal grooming of past and present stars of the stage. It would be nice to see this work on bright paper, but all of the other copies we have seen of it have been affected by overall browning and significant foxing. This is not a common book: ABPC lists sales of just three copies in the last 29 years). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        I. Tombasis, burning a Turkish ship of the line"

Philhellenic: Munich H. Kohler c1835. Tinted lithograph, as issued, of Iakovos Tombaziz from Peter von Hess's Album of Greek Heroism, or the Deliverance of Greece / Griechenlands Befreiung ... in XXXIX Bildern.[ First edition.] within decorative borders incorporating captions in Greek, German, French & English. The borders are decorated with guns, swords and helmets with the Greek flag to the left; on the right a crucifix and other emblems of the Christian church; at the top Turkish weapons, laid down, with a fez ,and below, sails and naval instruments. Iakovos "Yiakoumakis" Tombazis c. 1782-1829) was a merchant and ship-owner from the Greek island of Hydra who became the first Admiral of the Greek Navy, during the Greek War of Independence. In 1818, he was initiated into the Filiki Eteria, which was preparing the ground for the revolt. When the war broke out, his fellow islanders made Tombazis admiral of the fleet of Hydra. He took part in several clashes against the Sultan's Navy in the eastern Aegean and soon realized that the Greek warships, being mostly converted and armed merchantmen, could not face the Ottoman ships of the line in conventional combat. He therefore proposed the use of fireships instead, and sent Dimitrios Papanikolis to burn the Turkish frigate Moving Mountain anchored at Eresos on Lesbos. Image bright and clean; light spotting to blank borders. Peter( Heinrich Lambert} von Hess 1792-1871, was a German painter, known for historic paintings, especially of the Napoleonic Wars and the Greek War of Independence. In 1833, at Ludwig's request, he accompanied Otto of Greece to the newly formed Kingdom of Greece, where at Athens he gathered materials for pictures of the war of liberation. He stayed nine months in Greece, interviewing heroes and eyewitnesses of the 1821 revolution. His first- hand knowledge of the heroes gives power to his work. He drew 39 historical persons The sketches which he then made were placed, forty in number, in the Pinakothek, after being copied in wax on a large scale by Nilsen, in the northern arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich, [sadly now destroyed]. It should be noted that Hess was not present during the Revolution; the paintings are representations of reported events. many are of Greek victories, or of heroic deaths of the Greek leaders. Not in Blackmer ,Droulia or Contominas. Philhellenic Iakovos "Yiakoumakis" Tombazis

REFLEXIONES IMPARCIALES SOBRE LA HUMANIDAD DE LOS ESPAÑOLES EN LAS INDIAS, CONTRA LOS PRETENDIDOS FILOSOFOS Y POLITICOS.

Madrid: Por D. Joachin Ibarra., 1782. - [4],lii,315pp. Large quarto. Contemporary red morocco, tooled in gilt with coat of arms stamped in gilt on cover. Lightly rubbed at extremities, some minor staining to boards. Minor staining to last few text leaves. Blue watered silk endpapers, small bookplate on front pastedown; a.e.g. Negligible foxing. Very good. The first Spanish edition, translated from the original Italian written by an exiled Spanish Jesuit. Nuix weighs in on the controversy surrounding Spanish treatment of the native population in the Americas. Though he recognizes the violence perpetrated against the Indians, he defends Spanish colonialism as a grand and greater good brought to the Americas. This is a large paper copy of this important work, bound especially for Charles III, King of Spain (1759-1788) in full red morocco. The covers are stamped with the royal coat of arms. A discrete 19th-century bookplate of the Baroness Rothschild adorns the front pastedown, showing the embossed arms of the Rothschild family. Large paper copies of this work are exceedingly rare, and certainly none have so fine a provenance as this. PALAU 196692. SABIN 56309. MEDINA 5007.
