From Trieste he made excursions to Predjama Castle and the Škocjan Caves; by way of Venice he returned to Rome. The plates in the present volume show views, maps, plans and details of ornamentations and buildings, including the Pula Arena, the temple of Augustus (Pula), Diocletian's Palace (Split), the ruins of the amphitheater of Solin, Škocjan Caves and Predjama Castle. The first part is devoted to the history of Istria and Dalmatian, while the second part includes Cassas's account of his travels, edited from his journal by Joseph de Lavallée. Fourcroy (1755 - 1809) was born in Paris and studied medicine, graduating in 1780. Instead of practising he immediately turned his attention to the study of science and in particular chemistry. With the help of Buffon in 1784 he succeeded Macquer to the chair of Chemistry in the Jardin des Plantes and became a pioneer in the field of organic chemistry. He worked with Lavoisier on the new nomenclature for chemistry. He was a Deputy at the National Convention, and became one of the leading members of the Committee of Public Instruction. He assisted in organising the Ecole Polytechnique and in founding schools of medicine and was created director general of Public Instruction. His researches covered the whole field of chemistry but his most important investigations referred to animal substances, the study of which had never been so systematically undertaken previously. His teaching and researches resulted in the publication of several important works, this being his first. Bell's Edition of the Poets of Great Britain Complete from Chaucer to Churchill

London: Printed for John Bell British Library Strand, 1777-1782 - A rather rare and interesting survival. Such sets, with their durable boxes, were intended as recreational reading for travellers, and were often taken on the Grand Tour. Given the generally crisp interior condition of the volumes, the owner of this set was either exceptionally fastidious and careful, or did not use them. Authors in the set include Chaucer, Spenser, Donne, Milton, Dryden, Swift, Pope, and Gay (TRAVELLING LIBRARY) 109 vols., 12mo (5 x 3-1/8 inches). . Bound in contemporary tree calf, gilt spine, with green leather author label and red number label (1-109) and red label stamped in gilt "Bell's Poets of G. Britain" on each spine, greek key scroll at outer margins of the upper and lower covers, green marbled endpapers, edges yellow.

Octavo; a fine and very clean copy in an excellent modern French binding in the eighteenth-century style of grained dark blue calf, ornately gilt. With an eye-witness account of Cook's death. The first and best French edition of this important personal account of Cook's third voyage, and extremely scarce: a most attractive copy. Beddie records only the Mitchell and National Library copies in Australia. This edition contains, in addition to Zimmermann's narrative account, a life of Captain Cook adapted from material that had appeared in the Göttingisches Magazin, the work of either (or both) Georg Forster or Georg Lichtenberg. First appearing in German in 1781, Zimmermann's was the first description of the third voyage to appear on the continent, and as one of two accounts first published a full three years before the official account it may well have been in fact the earliest full description of the voyage to be published. In any early edition, Zimmermann's first-hand account of Cook's third voyage is one of the scarcest of all the Cook voyage accounts (there is for example no copy of any of the eighteenth-century editions in the Hill catalogue). Second French and German editions followed in 1783. "Both French editions are of great rarity and are of interest not only on that account but because of the additional matter which they contain…" (Holmes). Then followed Dutch editions in 1784 and 1791, and Russian versions were published at St. Petersburg in 1786 and 1788. These seem to have been all the appearances of the narrative until 1926, when the first version in English was published. As Rodney Davidson wrote of the early printings, "all these editions are exceedingly rare… It is hard to predict the realisation price for a copy if one were to come into the open market, as competition between collectors would be very keen…". "Zimmermann, a native of Speyer, was coxswain in the Discovery. From the start of the voyage he determined to keep a shorthand journal of the voyage and to retain it, despite the instructions… demanding the surrender of all logs and journals… His account is by no means free from errors, but it has an ingenuousness and charm which differentiate it from the other accounts. His appreciation of Cook's character deserves to rank with that of Samwell" (Holmes). Pp. 7 to 11 of this edition contain Zimmermann's long description of the Tasmanian Aborigines, with an interesting note in passing suggesting how many copies of the "Resolution and Adventure" medal, minted for distribution on the second voyage, were actually still available for distribution during the third voyage: on one day alone, Cook gave examples to eight or nine Aborigines, "which had such a good effect that the next day 49 more came to visit… some of whom received the same presents as their earlier compatriots, but none of whom was willing to come aboard the ships…

O-Wahaus des O-Tahiten Reise durch Athen. Aus dem O-Tahitischen übersetzt

n.p., 1782. Small octavo, xvi, 148 pp. (last blank), early owner's name on title-page dated the year of publication; very good in original rust-coloured patterned paper boards, a few chips, spine lettered in manuscript. Most uncommon German satire purporting to have been translated from a Tahitian account of a journey to Athens written by the "world-famous" traveller and friend of Captain Cook, "O-Wahau". There was an old man on Tahiti called by Cook "Owhaa" (Beaglehole; or in the printed version "Owhaw") - perhaps this is the name that has been borrowed for the present work? It is also tempting to suggest that the name of the fictitious Tahitian is also a play on the contemporary spelling of "O-why-hee". Whatever the case, despite its obvious interest as an imaginary work based on Cook's first voyage, the current work has slipped under the radar, notwithstanding the many studies of the subject: it is not in Beddie nor Gove, and not noticed in Howgego's forthcoming volume on imaginary voyages. This humorous account has much in common with other political writing of the Enlightenment, not least the use of a foreign visitor as a convenient mask for the delivery of a few political barbs, but is most unusual in that the over-arching conceit of the whole book is that it has been written by the pen of a Tahitian brought to Europe by Captain Cook, who seeks to explain the history of Europe by the example of a society in Athens, describing the cultural round, and the truths and discoveries he finds there. The purported author O-Wahau is described as a cultured and philosophical man who wants to commit his thoughts on the subject to paper in an attempt to influence his own society. The account begins with the comment that it is "well-known" that on his first voyage Cook had brought O-Wahau back from the rich island of Tahiti, because the young islander wanted to be in a position to give his people an account of the ways of Europe. As this implies, the author is setting out to claim a factual basis for his work, by muddying the water about the real Tahitian travellers such as Tupaia (who died in Batavia), Omai, and Autourou. The German "translator" claims to have met O-Wahau in Athens on the latter's Grand Tour, where they taught each other Greek and Tahitian. The two men became so close, he comments, that the German seriously contemplated returning to the Pacific with his new friend. The work is signed with the mealy-mouthed pseudonym "J.G.S. Methermänevomenos", and the initials have led to it being attributed with some authority to Schulz (although J.G. Seume and J.G. Schlosser have both also been suggested, with varying degrees of plausibility). Schulz (1762-1810) was sometimes called the "Don Quixote of the Eighteenth Century" and was an important Enlightenment thinker in Germany. The epigram on the title-page is a quote from Christoph Martin Wieland which suggests that there is already a fool's paradise, no doubt a comment on utopian writing generally. Tahiti fascinated European writers, and any number of fictional plays and novels follow up on the clash of cultures and the role of Captains Cook and Bougainville, notably: Bricaire de La Dixmérie, Le Sauvage de Taïti aux Français (1770); Diderot, Supplément au voyage de Bougainville (1771/1796); Fitzgerald, The Injured Islanders (1779); Pfeil (attributed), Die glückliche Insel oder Beytrag zu des Capitain (1781); Poncelin, Histoire des Révolutions de Taïti (1782); and Baston, Narrations d'Omai (1792-3), quite apart from a series of scurrilous poems based on the sexual exploits of Banks or Omai.

Voyages autour du monde , et vers les deux Pôles par terre et par mer

Paris: Moutard, 1782. Two volumes, octavo, with ten folding engraved maps and plates; some scattered spots, small tear to first title-page, but a very good copy in later half calf over original papered boards. Rare eyewitness account of Kerguelen's second voyage. First edition: the rare original account of Pagès's extensive narrative of travel and exploration, of most interest for the second volume which recounts his voyage towards the South Pole in search of a Southern Continent under Kerguelen in 1773-74. The ten fine engravings all relate to this part of the work. This was Kerguelen's second voyage, and a disastrous one: Pagès was to be an important witness in the subsequent court-martial of the commander for the events surrounding the dismasting of the Rolland during a storm. Kerguelen was dismissed from the service, and his printed account of the voyage, which was officially suppressed, is today very rare. This second volume also describes Pagès's experiences on a whaling voyage north of Spitzbergen in 1776, which includes much information on whaling and the natural history of the whale.

An Authentic Narrative of a Voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty's Ships Resolution and Discovery, during the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780; in search of a North-West Passage... including a faithful Account of all their Discoveries, and the unfortunate Death of Captain Cook

London: G. Robinson, J.Sewell; and J. Debrett, 1782. Two volumes, octavo, with a folding chart and 21 engraved plates; a fine copy in contemporary gilt calf, joints expertly repaired. The third voyage, by the surgeon's mate. First edition: an attractive set of this rare account - the second account to appear in English - of Cook's third voyage: 'an important supplement to the official account, which it preceded by two years' (Forbes). Ellis, surgeon's mate and talented amateur artist, sailed first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution. During the voyage he was esteemed by Captain Clerke as a 'very worthy young man'. On his return he was in financial straits and, despite the prohibition by the Admiralty of the publication of any unauthorised account of the voyage, sold his narrative to a London publisher for fifty guineas. It was published over his name, and was thus the first account of the expedition to acknowledge its authorship, earning the condemnation of Sir Joseph Banks, who wrote to him in January 1782 that 'I fear it will not in future be in my power to do what it might have been, had you asked and followed my advice'. Ellis' narrative contains much valuable information on Alaska, the Northwest Coast, and Hawaii, and the attractive engraved plates, after the author's drawings, include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska, and three of the Northwest Coast. The plates show Ellis to have been a talented amateur artist, and represent a significant contribution to the graphic record of the voyage. They 'are among the earliest published on the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska, and the Northwest' (Hill). Choris' famous views did not appear until almost forty years later. Ellis' views of Hawaii provide the first general depictions of the islands, as Rickman's book, published in the previous year, showed only the death of Cook while Zimmermann's account was not illustrated. There is a chapter devoted to their visit to Van Diemen's Land in January 1777, in the course of which Ellis painted a famous watercolour view of Adventure Bay, now in the National Library of Australia. Ellis died in 1785 after a fall from the main mast of a ship lying at Ostend.

Fine copy apart from some foxing to the plates. Inscribed by Matthew Baillie (1761-1823) to William Cruikshank (1745-1800) on the front flyleaf: "To Mr. Cruikshank with Mr. Baillie's best Compliments." 19th cent. ownership signature of Edward Thomas, dated Sept. 14, 1839, and later note, presumably by a Thomas descendent.

First Edition of the first and only published installment of the catalogue of William Hunter's magnificent collection of coins, a collection regarded as one of the finest in the world. Hunter began collecting coins around 1770, and by the time of his death had spent over £22,000 on this pursuit-an enormous sum of money by the standards of the day. After Hunter's death, by the terms of his will, the coin collection, together with Hunter's books, pictures and anatomical models, remained in the care of three trustees for thirty years, after which time they became the property of the University of Glasgow. In 1807 the collections were sent to Glasgow, where they now represent the core of the University's Hunterian Museum.

Nummorum veterum populorum et urbium was compiled by Charles Combe (1743-1817), a physician and coin dealer who became acquainted with Hunter in 1773, and greatly assisted Hunter in forming his collection. Combe was one of the three trustees appointed in Hunter's will to administer his collections, the other two being Dr. George Fordyce and Dr. David Pitcairne. Combe had originally intended to prepare a catalogue of the complete Hunterian coin collection, but was able to publish only this installment. The work is illustrated with 68 plates that Combe took care to make "more faithful to the original coins than the illustrations in previous numismatic works" (Dictionary of National Biography).

Our copy of Nummorum veterum populorum et urbium has an outstanding association, being inscribed by Hunter's nephew Matthew Baillie to Hunter's assistant William Cruikshank. Baillie and Cruikshank took over the administration of Hunter's Windmill Street anatomy school after Hunter's death. Hunter bequeathed the use of his collections to Baillie for a term of thirty years; had Baillie died during this time, the use of the collections would have passed to Cruikshank. Both men made lasting contributions to medicine. Baillie is best known as the author of The Morbid Anatomy of Some of the Most Important Parts of the Human Body, the first systematic study of pathology and the first publication in English on pathology as a separate subject (see Garrison-Morton 2281). Cruikshank, together with John Hunter and William Hewson, laid the foundation of modern knowledge of the lymphatic system, as described in Cruikshank's Anatomy of the Absorbing Vessels of the Human Body (1786; see Garrison-Morton 1103). POEMS BY ... OF THE INNER TEMPLE, ESQ. [with:] THE TASK, A POEM IN SIX BOOKS ... TO WHICH ARE ADDED ... AN EPISTLE TO JOSEPH HILL, ESQ. TIROCINIUM, OR A REVIEW OF SCHOOLS, AND THE HISTORY OF JOHN GILPIN

London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1782 - 1785.. London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1782 - 1785.. Two volumes. [4],367,[errata];[8],359,[1]pp. Uniformly bound in full forest green crushed levant, raised bands, spines gilt extra, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g., by Riviere. Spines uniformly sunned to tan, a bit of foxing to prelims in each volume, two short marginal tears in fore-edge of [A3] in second volume, surface scratch to lower board of volume I, but a very good, tall (188mm) set, with the half-title in the second volume. First editions of Cowper's first and second collections of poems. While the second work is in many ways an independent collection, the half-title affirms the publisher's intention that it be identified as the second, companion volume to the first. As usual, John Newton's 8 page Preface is not present in the first volume - the decision to cancel it was made within a week of publication, and it was included in only a few special copies, and after the success of THE TASK, distributed on demand or separately to earlier purchasers. It did not appear as an integral part of the book until the fifth edition (1793). As usual, leaves E6 and I6 are in their canceled state. In the present copy of the second work, the catchwords on pp. 304 and 306 are correct. RUSSELL 68 & 69. HAYWARD 191. ROTHSCHILD 681. GROLIER ENGLISH HUNDRED 60. ESTC T14895 & T14896.

Autograph musical manuscript signed of the Sonata in Eb Major for solo keyboard. Complete. No date, but ca. 1782 or later

[1] (title), [2]-[8] pp. Folio (ca. 300 x 230 mm.). Unbound. Notated in ink on 16-stave music manuscript paper. The work is in three movements, the first, marked "Allegro," in 82 measures; the second 70 measures; and the third, marked "Rondeau Allegretto," in 210 measures. 14 measures cancelled. Overpaste corrections to a total of 10 measures, with several additional corrections. . The present manuscript is Viotti's arrangement of his Sonata for Violin and Bass (Giazotto no. 36), composed in Paris in 1782. While there are published editions of the version for violin and bass (see RISM V1940-V1946), there do not appear to be any published editions of this version for keyboard. A highly distinguished Italian violinist and composer, Viotti is regarded as "the most influential violinist between Tartini and Paganini and the last great representative of the Italian tradition stemming from Corelli. He is considered the founder of the ‘modern’ (19th-century) French school of violin playing, and his compositions, among the finest examples of Classical violin music, exerted a strong influence on 19th-century violin style." Important Manuscript Document

Spanish Town, Jamaica, 1782. Spanish Town, Jamaica, 1782. unbound. 2 pages (front and back), 7.75 x 7.75 inches, Head Quarters, Spanish Town, Jamaica, October 26, 1782, a rare General Order allocating munitions to British soldiers in the defense of Spanish Town, in part: "...The ammunition of the several Regiments to be completed immediately to 200 rounds per man for service, packed up in kegs, or boxes, containing each from six hundred to six hundred and fifty Cartridges...to be fixed or slung on Pack Saddles. Things to be provided for this purpose...pieces of painted cloth to preserve the ammunition from Rain. The expense to be charged in the Regiment contingent accounts. The camp equipage of each Regiment to be also completed and every preparation made for taking the Field in the shortest notice. The Regiments will report when they are completed and in readiness agreeable to this Order." This document was issued one year after Yorktown and six months after the British victory at the Battle of the Saints, April 12, 1782. With the war having moved from North America to the West Indies, the British had to encounter a joint French-Spanish fleet whose intention was to conquer Jamaica. The Battle of the Saints is extremely important in naval history; by far the biggest fought at sea in the American War of Independence. As can be seen by this document, the British Regiments in Spanish Town were in a constant state of High Alert, a condition that lasted until November 30, 1782 when England and the United States signed the preliminary Articles of Peace. On verso: Extraordinary Manuscript Document, the proper form to be made-use-of "by Officers when they apply to their respective Commanding Officers for leave to sell their Commissions." In small part: "I beg you will obtain for me His Majesty's Consent to the sale of my Commission of________and it is my intentions to hereby resign all rights and position to any future rank or Promotion in the Army, and I do further declare, and certify, upon the Word and Honor of an Officer and a Gentleman, that I have not demanded, or accepted, neither will I demand or accept_______more than the sum of_____Pounds Sterling, being the price limited or fixed by His Majesty's Regulation, as the full value of the said Commission." Undoubtedly, any British Officer filling out this form in 1782 could only have been a veteran of the disastrous American Revolution. Once the sale of his Commission was complete, the former British Officer would take his proceeds and await voyage back to England. Slight chipping along the left edge; still very good condition.
