        Salle De Spectacle De Bordeaux.

Paris: Esprit, at the Author's Expense, 1782. - large folio. pp. 1 p.l., 10, [2]. engraved dedication & 22 engraved plates (1 double-page). old half calf over marbled bds., rebacked & recornered (some foxing mainly affecting margins, frontis. creased, 3-inch waterstain affecting lower edge of several plates). First Edition of this illustrated description of one the grandest of European theatres, constructed by Louis between 1773 and 1780. The plates include two perspective views of the interior and one of the main entrance, and several plans and sections, the last plate providing a comparative view of the plans of fourteen other theatres including Covent Garden, London, Versailles, the old Paris Opera, the Comédie Française, and theatres in Berlin, Argentina, Madrid, &c. A plate of the ceiling of the theatre was separately issued. With two exceptions the plates were designed and engraved by Louis himself. "The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux (1773-1780) is his masterpiece and a significant influence in nineteenth-century theater architecture. The elegant grand staircase and vestibule were models for Charles Garnier's Opera. The horseshoe-shaped auditorium became an exemplar for many nineteenth-century auditoriums, and the giant Corinthian colonnade running the full length of the facade was also influential. This well-produced folio is dedicated to the Duc de Richelieu, who was associated with the project. The discours préliminaire, which gives a history of the construction of the theater, was written for the education of the young architect. Its defense of the cost of the project and its many anecdotes concerning progress of the building, are interesting reading." (Millard) Berlin Kat. 2812. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

To His Excellency Genl. Washington Commander in Chief of the Armies of the United States of America. This Plan of the investment of York and Gloucester has been surveyed and laid down, and is Most humbly dedicated by his Excellency's Obedient and very humble servant, Sebastn. Bauman, Major of the New York or 2nd Regt of Artillery

Philadelphia, 1782. A cornerstone document of our national heritage" (Nebenzahl, Atlas, p. 184.) Within three days of the British surrender on October 19, 1781, Major Sebastian Bauman, an American artillery officer, took the field and carefully surveyed the terrain and battle positions at Yorktown. A native of Germany, Bauman had emigrated to America after service in the Austrian army. During the Revolution, he served in the campaigns in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and was in command of the artillery at West Point, before joining Washington at the siege of Yorktown. Bauman spent six days surveying the battlefield at Yorktown. His manuscript draft was quickly sent to Philadelphia where it was engraved by Robert Scot to be sold by subscription. The map was advertised in The New York Packet and the American Advertiser in March 1782: "Major Bauman of the New York, or Second Regiment of Artillery, Has Drawn a Map of the Investment of York and Gloucester, in Virginia. Shewing how those posts were besieged in form, by the allied army of America and France; the British lines of defence, and the American and French lines of approach, with part of York River, and the British ships as they then appeared sunken in it before Yorktown; and the whole encampment in its vicinity./ This Map, by desire of many gentlemen, will shortly be published in Philadelphia, in order that the public may form an idea of that memorable siege. Those gentlemen who incline to become subscribers will apply to the printer hereof; where the conditions will be shewn, and subscription money be received." This was the only detailed battle plan of Yorktown published in America. As a participant for the winning side, Bauman was able to spend more time surveying the field than the British engineers who were bottled up in Yorktown. Thus he was able to include an extensive area to the south of the town that does not appear on the best British plans, such as those published by Faden and Des Barres. The location of the French and American positions is necessarily more detailed and informed. As it appeared in print before the British plans, it was the first survey of the Siege of Yorktown made available to the American public. Margaret Pritchard notes that the plan was also an effective piece of propaganda: "In addition to providing substantial detailed military information, this map is also interesting for its artistic composition. Yorktown, Gloucester Point, and troop positions are confined primarily to the top half of the map. The lower half is dominated by the explanation that is embellished with ornaments of war. The shape of the scrollwork cartouche surrounding the explanation, with flags and banners that thrust upward from both sides, force the eye to the center of the image. "Here, in an open space, is the very heart of the map, 'The field where the British laid down their Arms' . " It is this field that is omitted from all of the British battle plans of Yorktown. Bauman's plan is a legendary rarity which almost never appears on the market. Its scarcity is due to the fact that it was separately published by subscription only. Relatively few sheets were printed, and very few of those survived. Wheat & Brun locate eight institutional copies, but not one in Virginia. To these, we can add four copies known to us in private American collections. Perhaps Nebenzahl summarized the importance of the map best: "Bauman's splendid map, dedicated to General Washington, reflects his formal European training in topographical engineering. It is the only American survey of the culmination of the great struggle for independence and a cornerstone document of our national heritage." Alexander O. Vietor, The Bauman Map of the Siege of Yorktown ; Schwartz & Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America, p . 199; Degrees of Latitude, 68; Nebenzahl, A Bibliography of Printed Battle Plans of the American Revolution, 189; Nebenzahl, Atlas of the American Revolution, Map 48; Wheat & Brun, Maps and Charts Published in America Before 1800: A Bibliography, entry 541; Fite & Freeman, A Book of Old Maps , pp. 287-288; Stokes & Haskell, American Historical Prints , pp. 57-58; Virginia Magazine of History & Biography 39 (1931), reproduced opp. p. 104. Copper engraving, with original hand-colouring. "References to the British Lines" is set within a scroll in the upper right-hand corner. At lower center is a lengthy key or "Explanation" of the battlefield, which identifies and describes eighteen key locations on the battlefield. The explanation is set within a rococo frame, which in turn is enclosed by the flags of the United States and France, cannon, arms, and other spoils of battle. Some minor creases on verso from previous folding, restoration to margins beyond platemark.

Folio, (19 x 13 inches). 20 decades, each with engraved title-page, many of which are printed in color, an engraved leaf of explanation -some in Chinese characters, and an engraved table of contents, 400 fine engraved plates: comprising two suites of 200, one suite uncoloured and one with original hand-colour (the first title-page repaired, a few marginal tears). Modern half red morocco, gilt. First edition, LARGE PAPER COPY, WITH TWO SUITES OF PLATES. Considered the principal work of the physician and naturalist, Pierre Joseph Buc'hoz. The magnificent plates were designed and engraved by the leading artists and engravers of the 18th century. They include Jean Baptise Desmoulins, Jac de Favanne, and Guil. De Favanne; Claude Mathieu Fessard, who engraved the plates for many books of Buchoz, C. Baquoy, Dupin fils, J. Mesnil, I. Robert, F. Lucas, Jac. Julliet. Buc'hoz, who was born in Metz, was appointed physician in ordinary to Stanislaus, King of Poland, but his driving interest was in natural history and the publication of numerous books. His biographer in the 'Biographie Universelle' states that he published over 300 volumes, including 95 large folios, in addition to a great number of papers and dissertations. He also described many new plants which Louis XV ordered to be cultivated in the Jardin du Trianon. Of special interest also is the use made for the first time of drawings of Chinese plants executed by native artists (many of the plants are signed "Peint a la Chine"), and much of Buchoz's other work also has some distinctly oriental flavor. The British Museum (Nat. Hist.) Cat.: I, 275, notes that "the plates of fossils and minerals were collected and issued in 1782 as 'Les dons merveilleux.de la Nature dans le regne Mineral." The sixty plates of plants were issued separately, "Collection precieuse.des fleurs.de la China"(1776?). Blunt pp.158-160 Brunet I, 1371. Graesse I, 563..

The School of Raphael; or, the Student’s Guide to Expression in Historical Painting. Illustrated by Examples engraved by Duchange, and others, under the inspection of Sir Nicholas Dorigny, from his own Drawings after the most celebrated Heads in the Cartons [sic] at the Queen’s Palace.

London John Boydell 1782. - Folio [42.8 x 28.5 cm], [6], 21, [1] p., XI [i.e. XII], 102 leaves of plates from Dorigny’s drawings after Raphael (45 in outline), 12 on geometry, anatomy and antique sculpture, and four extra-illustrated leaves by B. Picart. Bound in nineteenth-century half calf and marbled boards with leather corners. Rubbing to spine, boards and edges, with a partial library sticker on front pastedown. Very occasional foxing to leaves and plates, a few graphite annotations in margins; order of several plates near end transposed. Rare, extra-illustrated second edition of an artist’s drawing manual based on the "most celebrated heads" from Raphael’s Sistine Chapel tapestry cartoons, which William and Mary had Sir Christopher Wren install in their own gallery at Hampton Court (later transferred to V & A.) Although eagerly studied by 18th century British artists as the fons et origo of academic art, the cartoons proved controversial with the advent of stronger artistic personalities. It is no accident that Sir Joshua Reynolds published an influential article during in 1759, when the first editionj of the present work appeared. "Eager to find faults in Raphael's Cartoons, Reynolds's "Connoisseur" uses them to air his familiarity with academic rules and modern art theory, citing the "Line of Beauty and Grace", the need for variety, and the virtues of pyramidal design." (Krysmanski). The School of Raphael’s 102 plates show moods ranging from Affection (in Christ’s Charge to Peter) to Zeal (Elymas the Sorcerer). The volume also includes "THE OUTLINES of each HEAD," (unnumbered and interleaved with plates 1-45). These Raphael heads were drawn by Nicolas Dorigny, and engraved by the best known reproductive printers of the era. The book also included "several PLATES of the Most celebrated Antique Statues, Skeletons and Anatomical Figures, Engraved by an Eminent Artist," (plates I-XII). This copy of The School of Raphael is extra-illustrated with four large-scale engravings of nudes in classical poses and landscapes. They were drawn and engraved by the prolific Bernard Picart (1673-1733), and likely come from a larger volume of anatomy studies (numbers 60, 62-3, 66).The present edition is known to have been in the library of Sir John Soane.         Les Confessions de J.J. Rousseau, Suivies a Des Reveries Du Promeneur Solitaire.

      - Tome premier + Tome second. A Geneve 1782. 8vo. (4)+471; (4)+279+(1)+300 pages, printed on thick paper. With woodcut vignettes (the small flower on the title page of the first volume and the urn ornament on the title page of the second volume, among others). Bound in two contemporary brown halfleather binding with small gilt decoration on the spine. Spine a bit cracked and sidepaper with minor wear. * A nice set of the first edition of the first two parts of one of Rousseau's most famous works - including 'Reveries of a Solitary Walker'. Les Confessions was published right after his death in 1778 (the second two parts of the complete four volumes was published in 1789) and initiated the genre of modern biography. The work had a huge impact on Goethe, Wordsworth and other romantic writers. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was one of the greatest philosophers - especially of political philosophy, but also education, and the theory of man. The Confessions and his 'Contract Social' from 1762 stand as major texts of history. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Martin & Walter, 24441. in Edition collective, Histoire de Pontarlier, 1979. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[Attributes: First Edition]

OBSERVATIONS ON THE THREE FIRST VOLUMES OF THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH POETRY. IN A FAMILIAR LETTER TO THE AUTHOR

London: J. Stockale; R. Faulder, 1782. First Edition. Half Leather. Very Good+ binding. Ritson's first book, in which he attacks Thomas Warton's History of English Poetry in such vitriolic tones -- Warton is a preternder, a cheater and a liar -- as to cause quite a contretemps in late 18th century English literary circles. One assumes this actually pleased Ritson as he went on the next year to attack Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. Eventually, Ritson went complete mad, barricading himself in his rooms at Gray's Inn and setting fire to a pile of manuscripts. In an attractive later binding in red half-goat over marbled board with raised bands. We assume the binder was charged with binding a group of different books to a uniform size -- the title page is trimmed and mounted, and all the other leaves are folded neatly to fit, the bottom edge and then the leading edge over it. Rather astonishing, actually. Very Good+ binding.

Gregory-Sonneck p. 47. Hirsch I Anhang 16 (where Volume I is in second edition). Cortot pp. 41- 42. RISM BVI p. 190. "Three years in the writing, the first volume of Burney's General History of Music was published in 1776, two years later than proposed. He barely succeeded in his ambition to beat to publication the history of music written by Sir John Hawkins. However, Hawkins published his complete five-volume history at one time, whereas it was to take Burney until 1789 to complete his task. Contemporary reviews cast the books as rivals and the relative merits of the two histories have been in debate continuously since. Burney's initial volume enjoyed immediate success and very positive reviews, some of which Burney contrived to manipulate to ensure favourable comment. The second volume of the History was delayed by a relaxing of Burney's ambition, partly because he enjoyed his earlier successes and because of his distaste for the Gothic music that was his subject; it did not appear until 1782. The volume was a critical success, nevertheless, and drew notable attention because its publication coincided with the publication of Cecelia by his daughter Fanny. Work on the third volume of the History was interrupted by Burney's involvement with the Handel Commemoration of 1784. He was appointed official historian of the event, which caused him considerable difficulty and expense. He found himself in the hands of the exclusive admirers of Handel, who expected him to surrender all of his earnings to the charitable fund that was the beneficiary of the event. As a result of the direct intervention of the king, and others whom Burney could not afford to offend, the essays on Handel and his music in the Account of the Commemoration of Handel do not always reflect his honest critical opinion." "In 1789, at the age of 63, Burney published the third and fourth volumes of his History. A new, somewhat revised, edition of the first volume was also published, enabling the purchase of all four volumes (the first volume had gone out of print many years earlier). The completed work, though inevitably compared with that of Hawkins, was favourably received..." "...Burney's Tours and the General History of Music remain wellsprings of observation and insight into 18th-century musical life and practice. The History remains an impressive, if inconsistent, work of great value even after more than 200 years of specialized scholarship. The distinguishing mark of Burney's history, in comparison to that of Hawkins, is his greater familiarity and interest in contemporary music and his skill in addressing the general reader. Burney intended his work to be a distinctively English history of music directed to improving the taste of his readers. He wrote for a specific audience and sought the help of his collaborators, particularly Thomas Twinning (1735-1804) as much to assist him with the literary and general interest aspects of his work as with its musical content. The extensive treatment of Handel in the fourth volume of the History is the result both of Burney being granted access to the king's great collection of Handel manuscripts and of his catering to the general enthusiasm for Handel's music that dominated English taste for many years."         Piano di Operazioni Idrauliche per ottenere la Massima Depressione del Lago di Sesto, o sia di Bientina

Finely engraved title & five folding engraved plates. 1 p.l. (engraved title), x, 347 pp. Large 4to, cont. mottled sheep (extremities a little worn & rubbed), spine gilt, contrasting leather lettering piece on spine. Lucca: F. Bonsignori, 1782. First edition of this beautifully produced book printed on thick paper; it is a plan for an ambitious project of civil engineering and land reclamation. Lake Sesto (also known as Lake Bientina) posed a problem for the nearby town of Lucca in Tuscany as it was a large reservoir of stagnant water which caused numerous epidemics of malaria. Ximenes' solution was to drain the lake and reclaim the land by cutting a new channel, the "Nuovo Ozzeri," in addition to the existing Canale d'Ozzeri. The handsome engraved title-page shows two former fisherman carrying their boat away from a field now being ploughed. Ximenes has included on pages 175-205 the comments on his plan by Roger Joseph Boscovich ("Riflessioni sulla Relazioni del Sig. Abate Ximenes appartenente al Progetto di un Nuovo Ozzeri...") and an examination of it by Eustachio Zanotti ("Esame del Progetto del Novo Ozzeri") on pages 209-39. On pages 243-347 Ximenes provides his reply to both. Ximenes (1716-86), a Jesuit born in Sicily, became an ardent student of the sciences and made rapid progress in mathematics and geography. He was given the title of "mathematician to the Emperor," and held the chair of geography at the Academy of Florence. He wrote extensively on hydraulics, astronomy, and mechanics. One of the plates is a long extending cross-section of the Nuovo Ozzeri. Ximenes' plan was not put into effect, however, and the area surrounding Lucca continued to be malaria-infected marshland until the mid-19th century. Fine copy. Small gilt stamp of John Phillips Bodenhausen at foot of upper cover. .

Histoire des Revolutions de Taiti... par Messire Poutavery, Grand-Earee de Taiti; Ouvrage traduit du Taitien en Francais

Paris: Chez Lamy, 1782. Two volumes bound in one, the title to volume I a cancel as required by Kroepelien, lacking the first half-title, the second half-title present (although not called for in Kroepelien); a very handsome copy in contemporary French mottled calf, flat spine gilt with red morocco spine label. Putting words in Autourou's mouth. First edition, with the cancel title for 1782. This is an intriguing contemporary study of Tahiti, purporting to be translated from an original work by Autourou, the Tahitian brought back to Paris by Bougainville. The translation into French from the Tahitian alluded to in the title is, of course, a fiction. The work was actually written by Poncelin de la Roche-Tilhac (1746-1828), an ardent revolutionary who, later in his life, became an equally fervent enemy of the Republic. Poncelin combines a largely fictional account of the history of Tahiti with many accurate details of conditions in the Society Islands. As might be expected, the actual target for his critique is France. In the preface and introduction the pretended translator Mlle. B.D.B.D.B. comments that she is writing a memoir of Poutavery, a commonly used contemporary name for Autourou. Much as Omai would later become the lion of London society, Autourou had been fêted in Paris after he returned with Bougainville. He sailed for the South Seas with Marion Dufresne in 1771, but sadly died of smallpox in Madagascar the same year. This is a surprisingly rare work, with only one copy listed in OCLC (University of Hawaii, Manoa), although we know of copies in the State Library of New South Wales and the Bibliothèque Nationale. Gautier listed a copy with a 1781 titlepage, but this was not seen by the great bibliographers of Tahiti, O'Reilly & Reitman. A German translation followed in 1783, and another French edition with a different title in 1784.
