53 fine plates on 30 sheets. 2 p.l., xxxix, 99, [4] pp. 4to, cont. Spanish green morocco, cover with gilt fillets round sides, flat spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, characteristic Spanish marbled endpapers, a.e.g. First edition - and a superb copy in contemporary Spanish green morocco - of one of the most beautiful and influential of the Spanish writing books; this work and that of Palomares, published in 1776, made Spain an 18th-century center for calligraphy and fine handwriting. The calligraphic world of later eighteenth-century Spain was formed by the Palomaristas and the Anduagistas, two sides of a long-contested debate. Those supporting Palomares argued that the establishment of rules in order to make correct letter forms - a more efficient national script - was unnecessary because the plates contained in his book were sufficient to explain the process. On the other hand, Anduaga (1751-1822), felt that a full understanding of the rules was more important than any calligraphic samples. He was the first to introduce English letter forms into Spain, which caused further controversy. A fine and large copy, elegantly bound. This was a very popular text, with later editions and reworkings in 1791, 1793, 1795, 1805, and 1822. ? Becker, The Practice of Letters: the Hofer Collection of Writing Manuals 1514-1800, 143.         [AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM JOHN TRUMBULL TO HIS FATHER, JONATHAN TRUMBULL, REGARDING LONDON BUSINESS DEALINGS AND ANTI-AMERICAN SENTIMENT]

Amsterdam, 1781. [4]pp. Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Old folds. Small loss in center of sheet, not affecting text. Strip of later paper at left edge of first leaf. Light toning and soiling. Good. In a folio-sized black half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. Painter John Trumbull writes to his father, Connecticut governor and merchant Jonathan Trumbull, relating information about business affairs in London and some of the anti-American sentiment at work against him there. John Trumbull's skill with the pen earned him the notice of Gen. George Washington, drawing battle plans at Lexington, and Washington made him an aide-de-camp. Trumbull later served as a colonel under Horatio Gates, but retired from the army in 1777. In 1780 he traveled to Paris on business for his father, also journeying to London and the Netherlands, whence he wrote this letter. Trumbull expresses a resigned frustration over his treatment as an American in London during the American Revolution. Exactly why he thought he would be welcome, as a former rebel officer and son of a rebel colonial governor, is unclear, and the English showed remarkable restraint in just warning him out of town. He explains to his father at some length the involvement of the London counting house in anti-American politics, noting they host expatriate Loyalists on a regular basis. He writes: "Dear Sir, Before I left London, I called at Messrs. Lane Son & Frazer's counting house, to have some conversation with them on the subject of their debt; but finding none of them at home, & being oblig'd to leave the City the next morning, I wrote a few lines explaining your wish to bring the affair to a conclusive fulfillment, & assuring them that tho' the war, & consequent distress of America had not advanc'd the facility of a payment, yet if they chose to confide full powers on that head to their attorney Dr. Johnson, they might depend upon every degree of honour on your part. After having finished the letter, I was desir'd to step into the house of the elder Mr. Lane, whom I found accordingly. I told him my name and the subject on which I came to converse, and was treated as I expected rather cavalierly. I took leave therefore immediately, in the same style, telling him that he might depend upon it I was as perfectly indifferent to the business as he possibly could be. But if the house should see fit to think a little more at leisure on the subject, I had left a few lines with a direction under which they might write to me. On my arrival here I found the letter of which I enclose a copy & to which I have return'd a few lines in answer, as you will see, & which I hope will prove agreeable. "It is proper I should add a few words on the character which the house supports in the present contest, which is most inveterately anti American. Their table is attended one or two days in every week by the Refugees [i.e. Loyalists], and when some two years ago a subscription was set on foot for the relief of the American prisoners, a counter subscription 'for the purpose of enabling His Majesty to carry on the just and necessary war against his rebellious subjects in America' was put about, and among many others this house subscribed one hundred pounds. In short, every part of their conduct & language as I have been constantly inform'd, is hostile in the highest degree, and it was for this reason that I avoided calling upon them, until the whole force of Refugee vengeance had been exhausted upon me, & I had nothing more to fear."

A rare and noteworthy catalogue, containing many book s from the celebrated library of Claude Gabriel de Boze (1680-1753). While de Boze's library was being prepared for sale after his death in 1753, two distinguished bibliophiles - Jules François Cotte, Président au Parlement de Paris, and Charles Robert Boutin, Maître des Requêtes, purchased the entire library for the sum of 83,000 livres. They, in turn, sold most of the 15th-century books, except for the Gutenberg Bible, to Gaignat. Cotte and Boutin then divided up amongst themselves the books they wished to keep, and sold the remainder by auction through Gabriel Martin in 1754. Boutin (b. 1722) went on to have a distinguished career in government and finance, serving in a number of important and lucrative positions. This library contains 792 lots of books, seven lots of "Registres du Parlement" in 192 manuscript volumes, and a fascinating series of seven lots of early books printed in China. A number of the books are identified as coming from the Boze library. Boutin's library was a fine one, with many books richly bound, the great early Aldines, other early printed books, and many English literary sets. Priced throughout in a contemporary hand.       Budapest, typis Regiae Universitatis, 1781. - 8°. 4 ff., 272, LV pp., 1 engraved plate with a schematic arrangement of Ying and Yang Modern decorated boards "Wurzbach XXIII, 224. Rare first edition of this collection of sinological treatises as a response to the work "De Sinensium imposturis dissertatio" by Benedek Cetto (1731-1799). The editor Pray was university librarian at Buda and an eminent historian. He and Cetto exchanged several books concerning a theory that Cetto had first presented in 1776 about the origin of the Hungarians which he tried to support with evidence from Chinese sources. In the present work Pray criticizes his understanding of Chinese chronology, astronomy, literature and Confucian philosophy. The second part contains eight letters sent by the jesuit Haller von Hallerstein (1703-1774) from China to Europe. The important mathematician, astronomer and missionary Hallerstein had come to China in 1738 and won the esteem of the Emperor Kiang-long. For many years he held the post of Chief of the Department of Mathematics in Beijing. In the present letters he tries to correct several misunderstandings Cetto had gathered from Chinese sources.       Reimpresa en Mallorca, 1781. - in-12. XVIII. 60pp. 60pp. 52pp. 75pp. (i.e. 76). 1 planche hors-texte. Palau, 349146. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

      - Genève, J. P. Bonnant, 1781. In two volumes. 8vo (21.5 x 13.8 cm). xix, 247 pp.; [ii], 285 pp.; eight engraved plates, mainly of glaciers, and one folded engraved map of the Alps, several woodengraved vignettes in the text. Original uniform blind publishers' wrappers. Spines renewed with later printed labels. Contained in a later blue cloth slipcase (23.2 x 15.8 x 6.9 cm) with black morocco label with gilt title.= First edition of this classic study of the (south)western Alps by Marc Théodore Bourrit (1739-1819), "chantre de l'eglise cathédrale de Genève" (first singer of the Geneva church cathedral), and a pioneer in alpinism and Alpine studies. The map indicates all the then known glaciers drawn by Bourrit and engraved by Geissler. The fine plates are also after Bourrit. There are several handwritten notes (inserted loose on small pieces of paper) that seem to be critical writings in a contemporary, English handwriting. Unfortunately unsigned and we cannot establish by whom yet, but it looks like this deserves some investigation. Uncut. A very good clean copy. Haller I, 1495; Lehner, 622. Not in Ward and Carozzi.
