Recherches sur les végétaux nourrissans qui, dans les temps de disette, peuvent remplacer les aliments ordinaires. Avec de nouvelles observations sur la culture des Pommes de terre.

Paris, impr. royale, 1781, fort vol in 8°, de 1f. - Vicaire, 657 - Poggendorff II, 362.

De generis humani varietate nativa liber. Editio altera.

Göttingen, Abr. Vandenhoeks Wwe., 1781. - (6), 128 SS. Mit 2 gest. Tafeln. Halblederband der Zeit mit goldgepr. Rückenschildchen. Buntpapiervorsätze. 8vo. Zweite Ausgabe des Gründungsdokuments der Anthropologie. J. F. Blumenbach (1752-1840) "is [today] chiefly remembered for his work 'On the Native Varieties of the Human Race', now considered as the foundation of the science of physical anthropology - the study of the origin and evolution of the races of men [.]. Blumenbach was able to develop the thesis that all living races are varieties of a single species, homo sapiens, and that their differences were small compared with those between man and the nearest animal; 'innumerable varieties of mankind run into each other by insensible degrees'. It is not surprising therefore that Blumenbach was opposed to the practice of slavery and the then current belief in the inherent savagery of the coloured races" (PMM). "Blumenbach was the founder of anthropology. In this, his dissertation, he classified mankind into four races, based on selected combinations of head shape, skin colour and hair form. In the second edition (1781) he found it necessary to expand this division into five races, but his famous terms 'Caucasian, Mongolian, Ethiopian, American, and Malayan' were not used until the third edition of 1795" (Garrison/M.). ...

Chez R. Mallassis, Impremeur ordinaire du Roi & de la Marine. A Paris, Chez Durand, nevey, Libraire, rue Galande. Jombert, heune, Libraire, rue Dauphine, 1781. Quarto Illustrated with 20 folding plates rebacked to style, full contemporary tree calf, spine with red gilt lettered morocco label and gilt decorated compartments One of the most important books of the eighteenth century on ship designs. af Chapman introduced new mathematical methods of determining the center of gravity for proposed designs. He also had worked out a system of isometric views of design proposals to assist in the accurate transfer of measurements. Other chapters are devoted to calculating the ship's way through the water, i.e. resistance to contours, and appointments and methods of construction. An earlier French edition had been issued in 1779 which only had 11 of the plates. The French edition criticizes Chapman's treatise to which Chapman replied in a later edition. It should be noted that Clairbois (the translator) took many of the illustrations for his own book Encyclopedie Methodique published in 1783. Frederik Henrik af Chapman, universally acknowledged as the father of naval architecture, was born in 1721 in Göteborg (Gothenburg) on the Swedish west coast, and died in 1808 in Karlskrona on the east coast, the son of a British Naval officer who had joined the Royal Swedish Navy in 1716, and an English mother, Susanna Colson, the daughter of a London shipwright. His studies of mathematics and physics began in Sweden and were completed in England; he also spent long periods in France, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and England studying naval architecture before eventually settling in Sweden where he devoted himself to naval architecture and ship building. In 1765 he took leave of absence from his work as chief naval architect for the Swedish Archipelago Fleet based at Sveaborg (off Helsinki) to devote himself for two years to Architectura navalis mercatoria. He devoted himself not only to the construction of ships but the re-bulding and re-organization of the whole system of ships building. In the short period of three years he accomplished the completion of twenty ships, ten ships of the line, and ten frigates. His system for building ships far surpassed all that existed and the majority of European naval powers adopted his system with all speed Covers with minimal wear, some browning to preliminary and terminal leaves, else fine [Polak 1605.         South Sea whale fishery. A representation of the ships Amelia Wilson & Castor off the Island of Bouro - with their boats & crew in the various process of fishing, shewing the manner the spermacetti whales are caught, also the method of cutting them into the ship, & boiling the oil upon deck.London, W.J. Huggins, January 1, 1825. Aquatint (plate size: 44 x 56.5 cm), printed on unwatermarked wove paper (50.5 x 61.5 cm).

      - Ingalls, Lothrop collection 104; Kendall Whaling Museum prints 188. Second issue(?) of a striking aquatint by Thomas Sutherland after a painting by the celebrated marine painter William John Huggins (1781-1845), original a sailor by trade. The spectacular scene shows the British whalers Amelia Wilson and Castor off Buru, Indonesia, with a dying sperm whale smashing a whale boat, crew "cutting in" blubber alongside one of the ships, and several whale boats giving chase. An earlier (and slightly smaller) version was published as South Sea Whale Fishery. The present print, with a longer title, shows the same scene "but differs in size and in execution of the sky and other details" (Ingalis). Ingalis suggests that "there may have been a third and perhaps even a fourth plate engraved of the same scene .". In very good condition, with some traces of tape at the foot.

        Natural History

1781. BUFFON, Count de. Natural History, General and Particular, by the Count de Buffon, Translated into English. Illustrated with three hundred and one Copper-plates, and Occasional Notes and Observations by the Translator. London and Edinburgh: Printed for W. Strahan and T. Cadell; W. Creech, 1781. Eight volumes. Octavo, contemporary full tree calf, raised bands, red and green morocco spine labels. $4800.Early edition of the first English translation of Buffon’s magnum opus, published in the same year as the first edition, translated and annotated by Scottish naturalist William Smellie, illustrated with 301 copperplate engravings, including two folding maps, one folding diagram, and frontispiece portrait of Buffon. In handsome contemporary tree calf bindings.“Natural history, prior to Buffon, had all the earmarks of an avocation, a hobby. Buffon is the one who raised it to the status of a science” (Mayr, 336). First translated into English in 1781 this work of Buffon provides, for the first time, “a complete survey of natural history in a popular form… in which he outlines a satisfactory account of the history of our globe… His belief in the mutability of species implied clearly some preparation for the thought of Darwin… Buffon was the first to present the universe as one complete whole and to find no phenomenon calling for any but a purely scientific explanation” (PMM 198). For the naturalist, Buffon’s History was “a splendid and well-illustrated account, and was widely used and copied from, [since it] illustrated animals from remote parts of the world” (Knight, 92). Published in the same year as the first edition of this translation; the first edition was issued in nine volumes and did not list the number of copperplates on the title pages. Plate CCXL appears in four states in Volume VII, as indicated in “Directions to the Binder” in Volume VIII. Index in Volume VIII. See Genet-Varcin & Roger 207. See Nissen 160. See Norman 369. Armorial bookplates.Text and plates generally clean and fine. Expert paper repair to Plate XXXV in Volume IV. Expert restoration to handsome contemporary tree calf. Buffon sets with all plates intact are scarce.

        Carte de l'Océan Pacifique...

Augsburg: Tobie Conrad Lotter, 1781. Engraved map, 465 x 490 mm., with original handcoloured outlines; mounted. The first separately-issued map to depict Hawaii: the panels of text beneath the map, in both French and German, mention the discovery of Hawaii and Cook's death. The text describes the map's origin, claiming that it is based on a map published in the Gentleman's Magazine of 1780. According to Forbes, the magazine 'published during 1780 important notices on the progress of Cook's Third Voyage, his death, and inter alia the existence of Hawaii'. The map from the Gentleman's Magazine was made by Thomas Kitchin the elder, and was published initially in July 1780 without marking the tracks of the voyage, and again in December of that year with the addition of Cook's route.Tobias Lotter (1717-1777) was an engraver and publisher who married into the long-established and respected map-making firm of Seutter of Vienna and Augsburg. His handsome map, with text in both French and German, shows the tracks of Cook and Clerke from Hawaii to the Northwest Coast of America and on to Kamchatka. It also shows Russian and Spanish routes in the Pacific.Lotter's map, and Kitchin's on which his was based, predated the first "official" map to show Hawaii which appeared with the official account of the voyage published in 1784. A chart showing Cook's discoveries in Hawaii did appear in John Rickman's surreptitious account of 1781, but it was the appearance of the official account of Cook's third voyage which resulted in a flood of maps delineating Cook's tracks and drawing particular attention to Hawaii where the great navigator met his end. In fine condition.

*****. In-8.         Douglass & Aikman's Almanack and Register for the Island of Jamaica: calculated For the Year of our Lord 1782, From the Creation of the World, 5786, And of the Julian Period, 6495; being the Second after Bissextile or Leap-Year.

Kingston: Douglass & Aikman, 1781 - Octavo (149 × 91 mm). Original tan calf wallet binding, raised bands to the spine, gilt chain-link rules, date gilt in the second compartment, single chain-link panel to both boards and the flap, a pocket inside both boards. Housed in chemise in a black morocco-backed black cloth drop-back box, title gilt to smooth-polished black morocco label. Somewhat worn and a touch stained, upper joint starting at the tail, short split at the tail of the fold of the flap, internal binding a little cracked after the final leaf of the text, spine correspondingly creased and just starting, light browning, but overall a very good copy in excellent unrestored contemporary condition. 92 pages, plus 5 leaves unpaginated of currency conversion tables, the almanac proper entirely interleaved with blanks, and 34 blanks at the rear. Extremely uncommon. Printed and published by David Douglass and William Aikman, Loyalist refugees from the Revolution in America – Douglass from Charleston, Aikman from Annapolis - this almanac includes, at the conclusion of the calendar proper, on the verso of the leaf bearing a Jamaican historical chronology - a "Kalendar of Months, Sabbaths, and Holy Days, the Hebrews or Jews observe & keep, for the Years 5541 and 5542 of the Creation", with the names of the holidays and the months printed in both English and Hebrew types. This page represents one of the very earliest specimens of Hebrew type in a publication produced in the Western Hemisphere intended for the use of Jews. Judah Monis's Grammar of the Hebrew Tongue of 1735 was a textbook for the instruction of biblical students at Harvard, while the first book published in North America, set with Hebrew type intended for a Jewish readership was probably the 1816 Philadelphia-published Order of Service containing "an Acrostic hymn in Hebrew" (Singerman 262), over thirty years after this almanac. In his study of DeCordova's Reason and Faith, (Kingston: Strupar and Preston [for Subscribers] 1788) Korn calls for serious investigation "of the relative significance of the Jewish communities in the West Indies during the eighteenth century in contrast to the settlements on the North American mainland" and describes how beginning with "the 1776 Jamaica almanac published by James Fannin in Montego Bay, the compilers of such guides included a Jewish calendar, pages which listed the Holy Days, holidays, the first days of the Hebrew months, and other such details", which he sees as a clear "indication of the importance of Jewish residents in the eyes of Christian Jamaicans" ("The Haham De Cordova of Jamaica" in American Jewish Archives, November, 1966, p. 141). However, the earliest examples printed "these Jewish data in English type", the first to utilize Hebrew type was Ann Woolhead's 1779 Almanac published in Kingston - no copy traced on current library searches, but a copy was apparently formerly in the library of the American Antiquarian Society - "thenceforth, all the printers of eighteenth-century almanacs which the writer has been able to examine in the West Indies Research Library utilized Hebrew type " (p142). That Douglass and Aikman - "Printers to the King's Most Excellent Majesty" – who are described by Cave as "extraordinarily good businessmen" ("Printing in Eighteenth-century Jamaica" in The Library, September 1978, p194), should adopt this practice is clear confirmation of Korn's inference relative to the perceived importance of the Jewish community in Jamaica at this time. Almanacs are by their very nature ephemeral, a functional reference and notebook, pocket-carried for their year of currency and then most often discarded; and those produced locally for a small readership, in a climate unforgiving to books, the more so. Don Mitchell's on-line West Indian Bibliography describes all issues of Douglass & Aikman's almanacs as "rare"; BL has two copies, one for 1781 and an imperfect copy for 1783 "wanting many leaves"; OCLC locates copies of the present edition a [Attributes: First Edition]

Les Nouvelles Découvertes des Russes, entre L'Asie et L'Amerique...

Paris: Hotel de Thou, 1781. Quarto, four folding engraved maps & one folding plate; a handsome copy in contemporary French mottled calf, gilt spines, red edges. The rare French edition of this famous book on Russian exploration, with good material on Alaska, the Aleutian Islands and the Northwest Coast. Coxe, on a journey through Russia, collected, compared and translated Russian journals, collected maps at St Petersburg, consulted with authorities and included several journals 'never before given to the public', directing the 'curious and inquisitive reader' to compare them to Cook's then unpublished journals. The book is a significant source on Russian exploration and expansion into the northern Pacific, and the attempt to open trade with Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Coxe 'also succeeded in securing additional material (for instance the narrative and maps of Krenitzin and Levashev's 'secret' expedition, the first official Russian government expedition since Bering's second expedition of 1741). He was able to secure this particular information, not widely known at the time even in Russia, from Dr. William Robertson, who in turn obtained it through his friend Dr. Rogerson, first physician to Empress Catherine II...' (Lada-Mocarski).This edition is not in Sabin, who does record another French edition, a version reduced to octavo format published in Neuchâtel in 1781. A few stains and some browning.

Internally browned, with some spotting and soiling mainly to margins. Provenance: Royal College of Surgeans in Ireland (ink stamp to title-page). Good copy. ----PMM 219 (first ed.); NLM/Blake 51; Wellcome II, p.183; Garrison-Morton 156; Norman 250 (first ed.). - The rare second edition. The first edition was a dissertation printed for private distribution only and is practically unobtainable. "Blumenbach was the founder of anthropology... he classified mankind into four races, based on selected combinations of head shape, skin colour and hair form... his famous terms 'Caucasian, Mongolian, Ethiopian, American, and Malayan' were not used until the third edition of 1795" (Garrison-M. 156).Blumenbach 'was preceded by Tyson and Linné who had prepared the ground for his studies by relating man to the order of the primates. Linné had distinguished four races of man chiefly by the color of their skin. From these premises Blumenbach was able to develop the thesis that all living races are varieties of a single species, homo sapiens, and that their differences were small compared with those between man and the nearest animal; "innumerable varieties of mankind run into each other by insensible degrees". It is not surprising therefore that Blumenbach was opposed to the practice of slavery and the then current belief in the inherent savagery of the colored races' (PMM). Very Good.

In this capacity he made large collections of specimens and drawings of the plants, fishes, and reptiles of the country and he proposed to the governor of Madras in 1785 that the company's medical officers and others should be officially requested to collect specimens and information concerning useful plants of the various districts of India. In 1787 he drew up a preliminary memoir on the poisonous snakes of the Coromandel coast, which was printed officially at Madras ... [In 1794] he wrote the preface to the Plants of the Coast of Coromandel by William Roxburgh, a sumptuous work published at the expense of the East India Company, and one outcome of his own recommendations made ten years before. In 1796 he published on the same scale, at the cost of the company, the first fascicle of his Account of Indian Serpents in folio, with forty-six plates, forty-four of which were the product of a huge collaborative enterprise in which Russell enlisted the help of other company servants. Russell's Account also relied heavily on Indian knowledge, although he subjected local wisdom to the trial of experiment and his own observations' (ODNB). Nissen ZBI; Wood p.546.
