      Livorno s.e. (Gio. Tommaso Masi) 1781.  8°,  mm 208x133, sette volumi di pp. (1), 501; 528; 533; 510; 446; 413; 426; legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida, doppio tassello al dorso, buona conservazione. Qualche segno del tempo al dorso del tomo terzo e prime carte del tomo uno leggermente allentate. Al primo vol., antiporta allegorica incisa su rame; ritratto in rame in medaglione allo stesso volume inciso da Pompeo e Giovanni Lapi su disegno di F.M. Berio. Applicato al verso della prima carta bianca, un foglio contenente annotazioni a penna relative al poema ("Opera rara ed introvabile", si legge tra l'altro in esse). Assai rara edizione livornese, la prima completa e quasi del tutto originale (la precedente del 1773, stampata con lo pseudonimo "dottor Cornografo" con l'indicazione di stampa "per Luca Cornigerio all'insegna del Capricorno", non comprendeva che dieci canti), nonche' senz'altro la piu' importante e ricercata, di questo lunghissimo poema licenzioso in 71 canti in ottave di Giovanni De Gamerra incentrato sui tradimenti coniugali e i mariti sfortunati nel corso dei secoli, a cominciare da Adamo. Malgrado la sua prolissita' il poema piacque a Voltaire per "les jolis vers et la parfaite connaissance de l'antiquite et des moeurs modernes" e a Ranieri Calzabigi, che la paragono' all'"Hudibras" del Butler prediligendola ai capolavori della poesia eroicomica italiana, la "Secchia Rapita" e il "Ricciardetto".  Per il nome dell'A., Giovanni De Gamerra, cfr.: G. Another edition of posthumous works appeared in the same time at Samuel Neuchatel Mowing, it differs in some points. Binding full glossy blond calf. back with nerves decorated. part of title and volume number in red morocco. Volume X, released in 1789 has a significantly different binding, still glossy golden calf with a triple framing net on the dishes. Some bumped corners and minimal defects. Very nice copy. This collective editing was complete collection of the works of Rousseau, but ahead of the multiple editions of Rousseau, it is problematic. It includes dialogues (Rousseau Judge of Jean-Jacques, Confessions (1782 VI books, as a result of M. de Malesherbes Covers) and later confessions (1789, Volume X) and Reveries of the Solitary Walker after the first part of the Confessions. It is unclear whether or not this issue before editing in-4 with figures, but it seems beforehand, since the first volume in 1781, and the in-4 edition begins in 1782. It is possible that this is the first collected edition of the Confessions, but nothing attests. It is also necessary to determine whether the collective original edition is the first original edition of the Confessions, or whether to take account separate edition 8vo, some bibliographers agreeing on the fact that a group can not be an original despite the prior art. In addition to these major works, this edition contains multiple rooms including a selected correspondence, Emile and Sophie , Love Stories Milord Edouard Bomston, The reckless engagement (theater), the translation of The History of Tacitus, The essay on modern music, Fragments for a dictionary of terms used in botany (different title but botanical dictionary same work). Most of these parts seems to appear here for the first time, if this edition is prior to the in-4 edition works by 1782. Note that this edition is different from the collective edition 8vo published at the same time as publishing in-4, there was also a collective edition of In-12 from 1782 to 1790 in 36 volumes in Neuchatel. In the edition of Génève 8vo, similar to editing in-4, the second part of the Confessions is 1790, it's here in 1789. In addition editions in-4 in-8 and Geneva have figures whose circulation has taken longer. Number of points tend to think that this joint issue is before all others, and contains many original, including Confessions, Dialogues, Reveries and various parts, it is in any case very rare. It is certain that this year could come to enlist the various previous editions of the works of Rousseau, including that published in 1772 by Rey in Amsterdam. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition collective, rare. Une autre édition des œuvres posthumes est parue dans le même temps à Neuchâtel chez Samuel Fauche, elle diffère par quelques points. Reliures en plein veau blond glacé. Dos à nerfs orné. Pièces de titre et de tomaison en maroquin rouge. Les tomes X, XI et XII, parus en 1789 possèdent une reliure sensiblement différente, toujours en veau blond glacé, avec un triple filet d'encadrement sur les plats. Un coin enfoncé et un accroc en pied du dos au tome XI. Quelques coins émoussés et défauts minimes. Quelques travaux de ver sur la reliure. Très bel exemplaire. Cette édition collective devait compléter la collection des œuvres de Rousseau, mais devant les multiples éditions de Rousseau, cette dernière pose des problèmes. Elle comprend Les Dialogues (Rousseau juge de Jean-Jacques, Les Confessions - 1782 en VI livres, à la suite des Lettres à M. de Malesherbes - et la suite des Confessions, 1789, tome X, ainsi que Les rêveries du promeneur solitaire à la suite de la première partie des Confessions). On ne sait si cette édition précède l'édition in-4 avec figures, mais elle semble préalable, puisque le premier volume date de 1781, et que l'édition in-4 commence en 1782. Il est possible que ce soit la toute première édition collective des Confessions, mais rien ne l'atteste. Encore faut-il déterminer si l'édition originale collective est la première édition originale des Confessions, ou s'il faut prendre en compte l'édition séparée in-8, certains bibliographes s'accordant sur le fait qu'une collective ne peut être une originale malgré l'antériorité. Outre ces grandes œuvres, cette édition contient de multiples pièces dont une correspondance choisie, Emile et Sophie, Les Amours de Milord Edouard Bomston, L'Engagement téméraire (théâtre), la traduction de L'Histoire de Tacite, La Dissertation sur la musique moderne, Fragments pour un dictionnaire des termes en usage en botanique (Titre différent du Dictionnaire de botanique mais même œuvre). La plupart de ces pièces semble paraître ici pour la première fois, si cette édition est bien antérieure à l'édition in-4 pour les œuvres de 1782. Il faut noter que cette édition est également différente de l'édition collective in-8 parue dans le même temps que l'édition in-4, il y eut également une édition collective in-12 de 1782 à 1790 en 36 volumes à Neuchâtel. Dans l'édition in-8 de Genève, similaire à l'édition in-4, la seconde partie des Confessions est de 1790, elle est ici de 1789. En outre les éditions in-4 et in-8 de Genève possèdent des figures dont le tirage a nécessité plus de temps. Nombre de points tendraient à penser que cette édition collective est antérieure à toutes les autres, et qu'elle contient nombre d'originales, notamment Les Confessions, Les Dialogues, Les Rêveries et diverses pièces, elle est en tous les cas fort rare. Il est certain que cette édition pourrait venir s'adjoindre aux différentes éditions antérieures des œuvres de Rousseau, notamment celle parue en 1772 chez Rey à Amsterdam.

In-8, plein veau blond glacé havane de l'époque, dos lisse richement orné d'un décor de compartiments garnis de fers spéciaux urnes et médaillons, dentelles, palettes et filets dorés, pièce de titre de maroquin bordeaux, roulette dorée sur les chasses et coupes, dentelle intérieure, tranches rouges, (2) f., 350, (1) p. d'errata. Seconde édition en partie originale de cet ouvrage pionnier de l'éthologie, qui a fait l’objet plusieurs travaux et études récentes. Philosophe et physiocrate, collaborateur de l'Encyclopédie (il composa notamment des articles sur la chasse, la forêt et les animaux), proche de Condillac, Buffon, Diderot, Helvétius et d’Holbach, Le Roy était lieutenant des chasses du parc de Versailles, "admirablement placé pour étudier les moeurs et l'instinct des animaux" (Thiébaud). Dans ces "Lettres" qui avaient d'abord partiellement parues sous forme d’articles dans divers périodiques, Le Roy est le premier à rapporter une description précise des comportements animaux dans leur milieu, à démontrer leur capacité d'apprentissage, de transmission, de sensibilité, d'intelligence et leur perfectibilité adaptative, jusqu’à proposer l’existence d’un langage animal articulé. Les rééditions de cet ouvrage au XIXe siècle porteront un titre plus explicite: "Lettres philosophiques sur l'intelligence et la perfectibilité des animaux". (Thiébaud, 44-45).       Rome: Cracas, 1781. 4to (196 x 142 mm.). XIV pp. Double column, typographic ornamental column dividers, two woodcut tailpieces. Originally folded, traces of vertical crease. Paper softened and slightly browned, first leaf rehinged, first 2 leaves and last leaf each with a small internal repair affecting a few letters, restored in old ink facsimile, lower blank fore-corners of 5 leaves restored. Later boards, sides covered with contemporary copper-gilt paper (partly oxidized).*** A rare ephemeral list of the wedding gifts received by a wealthy Roman couple with close Papal ties. Luigi Braschi Onesti (1745-1816) was a nephew of Pope Pius VI (Gianangelo Braschi). Costanza Falconieri (1764-ca. 1820) was one of six children of Countess Giulia Millini, allegedly the Pope's mistress in her youth. Falconieri certainly enjoyed special favor: her dowry having been settled at a much higher sum than was usual for her family, thanks to a Papal dispensation, at age 16 she was married to Braschi Onesti in the Sistine Chapel, by the Pope himself. THE social event of the season, if not of the decade, the wedding celebrations were practically a state event: "nobles, princes, and Cardinals competed to offer propitiatory gifts to the newlyweds" (DBI). Their gifts, recorded in the present pamphlet, were staggering in their opulence and sheer number. Possibly intended for distribution to guests, this extraordinary inventory of wedding gifts contains 91 entries of gifts to the bride and 59 to the groom, listed by donor (identified by name and rank), but many of the entries include multiple gifts, and the total approaches 300. For the lady there was above all jewelry, dripping with diamonds, opals, emeralds and rubies; next in quantity came dresses, capes, and other garments, in satins and silks, embroidered with gold and lace, in pink (apparently a favored color) or white, or ash-grey, with floral designs, with lace trim, with matching muffs...; gold and silver boxes and painted baskets, pocket watches, a silver and ivory writing set preserved within an ornate wooden case from Portugal; travelling cases embellished in lapis lazuli and gold; silver dinner and coffee services; glassware including a mirror; fine linens; a gold and enamel clock; a jewel-encrusted fan; a reliquary, an "acquasanteria" (holy water font, presumably for a private chapel) of beaten silver with a bas-relief design of putti, the Virgin, St. Joseph, and the Holy Dove; and even a book, of theater architecture, presented by the author, Cosimo Morelli (apparently his Pianta e Spaccato del Nuovo Teatro d'Imola, Rome 1780), and splendidly bound with the couple's arms. Braschi Onesti, made Duke upon his marriage, was showered equally with jewels, rings, snuffboxes, and porcelain; but also with furniture including a Meissen writing desk, noble stallions for his stable, an ornately decorated gold-trimmed carriage for two, a pair of magnificent silver containers, one filled with chocolate and one with coffee, silver wine services, Parisian chandeliers, paintings and tapestries to decorate his new home, including a large painting of the meeting of Jephthah with his daughter, by Giovanni Francesco Romanelli, prayer books printed by Salvioni, finely bound "a la Francese," and precious objects for a cabinet: ancient cameos, oriental pearls, and enamelled and bejewelled boxes containing, conveniently, wads of cash. After the wedding the couple's lavishly appointed household became nothing less than a court, the center of high society and cultural events, where visiting dignitaries, newly anointed Cardinals, and all those interested in currying favor with the Pope were expected to pay their respects. Benefiting further from the latter's unabashed nepotism, Braschi Onesti became one of Italy's biggest landowners. The palace his uncle built for him on the Piazza Navona, which housed his splendid collection of art and antiquities, is now the Museo di Roma. Costanza Falcionieri gained celebrity, or notoriety, through her extramarital affairs (in this hardly exceeding her husband, who was of course excused for the same behavior), notably with the poet Vincenzo Monti, for a time Braschi Onesti's secretary. I locate four other copies, of which one still in the Palazzo Braschi, two in Germany and one at the British Library.

      BAL 2934; M. Steffens, K. F. Schinkel 1781-1841 (2003), p. 12. First edition of a collection of architectural designs by the German architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841), "the most highly-regarded architect of his generation, whose influence is comparable with that of Percier and Fontaine in France" (BAL). It includes a total of 170 large engravings after Schinkel's drawings and ground plans for many important German monumental buildings, manors, churches, monuments etc., including around 10 plates of the Schauspielhaus (Konzerthaus) in Berlin, one of his major projects. "Between about 1800 and 1840 he [Schinkel] produced a large number of architectural drawings, latterly in relation to commissions which he obtained as his fame spread (more than 500 drawings were in existence at his death, many of which are now in the Nationalgalerie in Berlin). It was from this body of work that Schinkel made his own selection for the present work" (BAL). "He left his mark German architecture of the 19th century and beyond like no architect since" (Steffens).Corner of title-page torn off, restored, several plates heavily browned or foxed, a few others with tears, all restored.       Londra 1781 - Scena di carnevale su via del Corso, finemente incisa in acquatinta e stampata con colore seppia. La veduta fa parte di una serie di quattro scene sul carnevale romano incise dal Sandby su disegno di David Allan. Questi fu uno dei primi artisti scozzesi ad interessarsi della vita popolare; visitò Roma tra il 1767 ed il 1777, realizzando una cospicua serie di disegni ed acquarelli, alcuni dei quali furono tradotti a stampa dal Sandby. La tecnica dell’acquatinta, conferisce all’opera quel particolare tono simile all’acquarello rendendo le opere molto affascinanti. In eccellente stato di conservazione. Dimensioni 550x370. Paul Sandby was a landscape painter and printmaker.David Allan was one of the first painters in Scotland to record the everyday life of ordinary people. He was based in Rome from around 1767 to 1777 where he painted historical subjects, portraits and the everyday life around him in a series of watercolours. In Scotland he enjoyed a successful career as both an artist and a teacher of art. Some of David Allan's watercolours of Rome were copied by Paul Sandby in London, as prints. The technique of aquatint (used here) allowed the engraver to create the effect of colour washes with the addition of etched lines for detail. This is a technique that provides an additional layer of meaning to the scene. The aquatint allows tonal variation and contrast which in turn creates atmosphere. There is a tremendous amount of detail in the print, and any British observer at the time would have received a good impression of what Rome was like from this print. Sandby's re-creation of Allan's watercolour would have made the image much more accessible through multiple copies. Only the most popular or marketable images would be copied as prints.The composition is quite complex. The background of the street and buildings is rendered with single point perspective, where the landscape appears to recede away to a single point in the distance. The viewpoint Allan chose was a low one. This means that the buildings appear to loom over the scene and a lot of sky is shown. In contrast, the action on the ground occupies only the lower third of the composition; Allan did not "zoom in" on any one aspect but created a general view of the scene. In this view, two British travellers on horseback are confronted by the extravagant costumes and masked figures from the entertainers at a Roman carnival. Despite their politeness these grotesque figures are slightly disturbing. Perhaps this scene demonstrates the alien and disorientating feeling of visiting a new city and discovering bizarre customs which the traveller has never experienced before. Contained in a later blue cloth slipcase (23.2 x 15.8 x 6.9 cm) with black morocco label with gilt title.l First edition of this classic study of the (south)western Alps by Marc Théodore Bourrit (1739-1819), "chantre de l'eglise cathédrale de Genève" (first singer of the Geneva church cathedral), and a pioneer in alpinism and alpine studies. The map indicates all the then-known glaciers drawn by Bourrit and engraved by Geissler. The fine plates are also after Bourrit. There are several handwritten notes (loosely inserted on small pieces of paper) that seem to be critical writings in a contemporary, English handwriting - unfortunately unsigned, and we cannot establish by whom yet, but it looks like this deserves some investigation. An interesting, and scarce edition [no copies at auction in the last 25 years; OCLC lists only 3 institutions with this edition] which has a preface not present in the English edition: "'Twenty times', exclaims the translator [in this preface dated Amst. 25 Nov. 1780], 'have the English encouraged the idea and flattered themselves with it of putting a speedy termination to the war, yet after six years they are no farther advanced in the conquest or reconciliation than they were on the first day"'. Los cambios son entre moneda de Aragón, plata Valenciana, moneda Jaquesa, moneda de Ardites, etc. 4 estados plegados con deterioros de humedad y alguna rasgadura.

This attractive copper engraving is from Buchoz's 'Collection Coloriée des plus belles variétés de Tulipes' in Pierre Buchoz's supplement to the work Collection des Fleurs de la Chine & de l'Europe, & de tout l'Ouvrage. Buchoz or Buc'hoz (1731-1807) was born in Metz. At the age of 28, he was appointed physician to the King of Poland, but left his post to pursue his interest in botany.
