'O-Tahiti' [in] Göttingisches Magazin der Wissenschaft und Litteratur.

Göttingen: Johann Christian Dieterich, 1780. Small octavo, a handsome copy in the original decorative wrappers (thus retaining the publisher's prospectus on the front and rear endpapers), untrimmed. A fine copy and now rare: known to O'Reilly & Reitman's exhaustive bibliography as the earliest full publication regarding the Spanish voyages to Tahiti in the 1770s. This is the first issue of the first volume of the Göttingisches Magazin, the important scientific periodical edited by Georg Forster and Georg Lichtenberg. Included here is Georg Forster's notable contribution on Tahiti, a 36-page essay on the Spanish voyages to Tahiti in the 1770s.This essay is revelatory concerning the continuing interest and expertise of the Forsters regarding the Pacific, beginning as it does with Georg's discussion of how his father had received, in Summer 1778, a Spanish manuscript regarding Tahiti from the Director of the King's Botanical Gardens in Madrid, Don Casimir Gomez Ortega. This would have been of consuming interest to both Forsters, who had spent many months at Tahiti during Cook's second voyage, and who had speculated at length in their printed accounts about reports of Spanish sailors visiting the region between Cook's first and second visits. The work includes some 87 scholarly notes by Forster on the Spanish observations on Tahiti.Such an early report of Spanish activity in the region, which includes Forster's particular notice of the voyages of Don Juan de Langara y Huarte and Don Domingo Buenechea, commanders of two of the three Spanish voyages to the region in the 1770s, is an attractive and conspicuously early reference to Tahiti. Indeed, as O'Reilly & Reitman's bibliography attests, there was almost no contemporary work on the Spanish visits, despite them being a matter of some concern for the British at the time. Neatly rebacked, wrappers professionally strengthened.

A REPLY TO THE OBSERVATIONS OF LIEUT. GEN. SIR WILLIAM HOWE, ON A PAMPHLET, ENTITLED LETTERS TO A NOBLEMAN: IN WHICH HIS MISREPRESENTATIONS ARE DETECTED, AND THOSE LETTERS ARE SUPPORTED, BY A VARIETY OF NEW MATTER AND ARGUMENT

London, 1780. [4],149,[2]pp. Half title. Dbd. Presentation inscription from the author to the Earl of Lisburne on the half title. Internally clean. Very good plus. In a cardboard case, paper label on spine. First London edition, after the very rare New York printing of 1777 (most copies of that edition were destroyed by a New York mob) and another of 1780. This copy is inscribed by the author on the titlepage: "For the right Honourable Earl of Lisburne from his most faithfull & obedient servt. The Author." The Earl was an Irish peer, and so was sitting in the English House of Commons at the time of publication. Galloway, former Loyalist "Superintendent" of Philadelphia during the British occupation of 1777-78, herein replies to Gen. Howe's OBSERVATIONS..., preaching to him on how he could have won the war. In spite of its combative tone, the pamphlet does provide important details on the Revolution in 1777-78, the nature of the countryside, etc. Galloway attacks Howe's defense that he was forced to fight in forests by stating that at least two-thirds and in many places five-sixths of the area in question was cleared farmland. The appendix includes a letter from Henry Laurens describing the want of supplies and food by the American army at Valley Forge. HOWES G48, "aa." AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 80-35a. SABIN 26443.

Representation of the New Shaving Machine, whereby a number of persons may be done at the same time with expedition ease and safety. Manufactured & sold by D. Merry & Son, Birmingham.

(Birmingham.) [c.1780?] Uncoloured etching, illustration above & beneath 17 & 3 lines of text respectively; a few marginal tears & creases not affecting image, a few spots. 24 x 38cm with good margins.Copac records the Wellcome only; OCLC adds Yale & the Morgan Library; George (BM Satires) notes the existence of this print but does not record a copy at the BM. A wonderfully bizarre contraption, with a detailed key. On the back right wall is a portrait of Tim Bobbin, pseudonym of the Rochdale caricaturist and self-styled 'Lancashire Hogarth', after a known self-portrait by Collier. The print appears to be a satire on industrialisation and mechanisation. Six men sit side by side in anticipation of being shaved simultaneously by the 'New Shaving Machine'. The notice 'To the Public' announces: 'Whereas the wonderful powers of this useful Machine are yet but little known and even doubted by those who have not seen it, the Inventor has for their satisfaction prefixed a Plate representing his Shaving and Dressing Room with six Customers sitting. Pledges himself that his Machine will be found to do its work in the most safe, smooth and efficacious manner, with three scrapes or movements, and that those who shall have once tried it will no longer entertain any doubts on the subject ...'

Third and final edition, the best and most complete to the text, bringing the number of volumes published until 10 against 7. The work appeared in a luxurious version, in 4 (some prints in-8 were also thicker paper and higher quality, it does ours) and a more modest version. Ten headpieces by Moreau Young whose portrait of Raynal Volume 1 by Cochin regravés by Lardy.Demi Havana contemporary sheepskin in small corners. back smooth decorated with gilded nets, part of title in red morocco, and volume number in black leather. Scattered spots.Published for the first time in 1771 in 7 volumes, the Philosophical History of the Indies was a huge success throughout Europe and America; its success is mainly due to the severe criticism of colonialism, exploitation, slavery and mercantilism. He was sentenced to be removed by order of the Council of 19 December 1779 and sentenced to the fire by decree of the Parliament of Paris on 25 May 1781. Book emblem of the Enlightenment, posing as a history of international trade, The work is before any violent rant against European colonialism and arrogance, slavery and enslavement of peoples, against the church which assists in European hypocrisy. We now know that Diderot worked from the first edition and has overseen the organization of texts, he perfected in the third edition (adding many texts from his pen and that of other employees, such Holbach), transforming the initial work in a real war machine of the party philosophers. The book is also not qu'accusations, instead it seeks and craves even peaceful solutions, agreements between nations. The story does not deceived because it lives in Raynal a promoter of the French Revolution.

Berlin: Friedrich Nicolai, 1780. B[i-viii]+430 pages small octavo (7" x 4 1/2") bound in contemporary half leather with marbled boards. Foreword by Friedrich Nicolai, Translated by K F Trost. First published in French (Paris) in 1775 as Traite Theorique et Pratique du Jeu des Eches. From the library of Borje Borjesson. Not in Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana First German edition.Le Traite des Amateurs is a chess treatise composed, by a "Society of Amateurs" contemporaries of Philidor; who all frequented the Cafe de la Regence, in Paris. Of these, the strongest players were Bernard, Carlier, Leger, and Verdoni. Philidor, constantly resident in London, took no part in writing the "Traite des Amateurs;" which in fact embodies many criticisms and comments upon his earlier printed book. Only four masters of the group, considered the strongest, are known: Bernard, Carlier, Leger and Verdoni. A part, partially, from Verdoni, who is the only one of the Amateurs with his own entry in the Oxford Companion to Chess, not very much is known about the life of these masters. Their first names, places and dates of birth or deaths (the year of death of Verdoni, tough, is known) are for instance unknown. They, however, appear periodically in the chess literature of the time and, consequently, it is possible to provide some details on their lives and styles. Concerning their games, several Verdoni's games are known, while only one game of Bernard and Carlier playing together and winning against Philidor, who gives to them the advantage of Pawn and Move, survived. Verdoni, Bernard, Carlier and Leger, although they didn't even approach Philidor's level, were considered the best in the world in the years following death of Philidor and, directly or indirectly (since Verdoni after the publication of Traite moved to London), have disputed each other the scepter of Philidor's successor. There are of course not records of their games and, consequently, it would be impossible for us to assess the relative strength of these player. Deschapelles, however, reported that Philidor classed Legalle as a player on even terms, Verdoni as one to receive pawn for the move, Bernard and Carlier as Pawn and move players. Bernard was probably the best chess player at the Cafe de la Regence around the end of the 18th century or at least until the arrival of Alexandre Deschapelles to the world chess scene in 1798 according to George Walker.(Murray)Condition:Spine ends rubbed, small crack at head and heal hinges, corners rubbed, book plate of Borje Borjesson on front paste down, old previous owner's neat name on title else about very good.

First edition of the translation and abstract conducted by the Marquis of Paulmy Contant and Orville.Copy the arms of Rohan Chabot, certainly from the date of publishing, Louis-Antoine de Rohan-Chabot said the chevalier de Rohan. 2 twins and two sculpin crowned in the corners. We know that the Cardinal de Rohan library (infamous!) It was twins on the way back iron.Binding full fair calf ice period. Back smooth decorated. Part of title and volume number in brown leather. 3 slashes on upper cover of Volume II without consequence. Nice copy. The sun knight is a translation of the Spanish novel of chivalry Diego Orthunez of Calahorra, the first part was published in 1555, the suites appeared later, second and third parts are not of the author. Interesting preface to the Marquis de Paulmy, celèbre medievalist at the time, which asserts that the cycle of Amadis is a continuation of the knight of the sun. A table of contents allows to find the chronology of each character. The Marquis de Paulmy and his sidekick Contant d'Orville did not simply translate the knight of the sun, they compiled not only the result of the History of the knight soelil, but also the last 21 novels Amadis, and romance novels by Duverdier, allowing to follow the fate of all the characters of the Spanish romantic chivalry two books. Seems the strangest musical scores introduction and philidor songs and celebrating Grétry chivalry, testimony to the perception of the eighteenth of a romantic chivalry.         A New and Accurate Map of North Carolina and Part of South Carolina with the Field Battle between Earl Cornwallis and General Gates.

[Political Magazine/John Bew],, 1780. [London], [Political Magazine/John Bew], c.1780. Original copper engraved Map. 38 cm wide x 27.5 cm high. Mounted on paper. Very good condition with no signs of foxing. From a wonderful collection of Maps from an old english library (South Shields) - with two tiny library stamps to the mounting paper (The stamps are NOT on the map). This scarce map of the Carolinas, published during the American Revolution, is apparently based on Henry Mouzon's 1778 foundation map of the region. It is filled with topographical notes and the locations of important plantations, court houses, meeting houses, swamps, and chapels. This map illustrates the region involved in the southern theater of the war. After General Clinton seized Charleston in May of 1780, the British began a campaign into the Carolinas in pursuit of the remnants of the Continental Army. The map illustrates the Battle of Camden in August, 1780, where the American General Gates was defeated by British General Cornwallis. (Source: Old World Auctions)

First edition. A handsome Large Paper copy of this biographical memoir of the notable eighteenth-century "political propagandist" (ODNB). Hollis (1720?1774) "believed citizenship should be active: individuals had an important role to play in public life. He partly fulfilled this responsibility by charitable work as a governor of Guy's and St Thomas's hospitals, and a guardian of the asylum and Magdalen Hospital ? He believed that legitimate government was contractual, and that the people as constituent authority were entitled to replace tyrants by new governments. As a republican Hollis provided material for Catharine Macaulay's History of England. Yet he was also a patriotic Englishman and warm supporter of the house of Hanover. His heroes were Elizabeth I, Oliver Cromwell, and Pitt, all of whom extended England's international standing, as well as John Milton, his particular hero". In addition to his charitable work he also pursued a programme of reprinting and distributing literature "from the seventeenth-century republican canon, thus keeping the cause of parliamentary reform alive during a difficult period". He later turned his philanthropy to America, "In 1758 Hollis made his first gift of books to Harvard College ? For the following fifteen years thousands of books would be sent westward by the most generous donor colonial American libraries were to know" (Marshall, "Thomas Hollis:The Bibliophile As Libertarian," in the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library 66 (2), p.247). Lavishly produced memorial volume, here offered in a splendid period binding. 20th century bookplate of Robert J.       [Mexico]: No publisher/printer, ca. 1780–90. Folio (31.2 cm; 12.5"). [1] p. A confraternity publication not listed in Medina, this document certifies that on 14 August 1790 Dr. don Gabriel Gomez [sic] received his habit in the town of Tzintzuntzan, in the province of Michoacan.    Confraternities were social and mutual self-help organizations under the very large umbrella of the Catholic Church; membership was usually restricted variously by race, occupation, neighborhood, or ethnicity. Through dues and soliciting alms the confraternities paid for members' funerals, the confraternities' religious festivals, and the maintenance of designated altars and chapels.    Printed within a border of type ornaments open at the bottom, this features a woodcut of the Third Order's coat of arms.    Rare: No copy traced to a U.S. library. Not in any of the standard bibliographies.         Not in Medina, Mexico, or its supplements. One old horizontal fold. Blank margins irregular and with small pieces torn away; thumbnail-sized brown stain in one margin, worming affecting type-ornament border and costing one letter of text, tear in text area repaired from rear. A very good copy.

Bel exemplaire.

A Voyage to New Guinea, and the Moluccas, from Balambangan: including an Account of Magindano, Sooloo, and other Islands... performed in the Tartar Galley...

London: G. Scott, 1780. Quarto, with 31 engraved maps and plates, many double-page or folding.; in modern quarter calf. The second edition of an important and early work on New Guinea, with extensive mapping.Forrest, on the recommendation of Alexander Dalrymple, had pioneered the English East India Company's settlement at the island of Balambangan in Borneo. In 1774 he commanded two English officers and eighteen Malays on a voyage to the Moluccas in a native prahu named the Tartar. He reached as far as Geelvink Bay in western New Guinea, present-day Irian Jaya, on his voyage 'of examination and enquiry rather than of discovery' (Hill). By the time his journey was abandoned at the entreaty of his crew, he had sailed some 4000 miles, returning to Aceh in Sumatra. This was his most famous voyage of exploration, but he also made another important voyage in 1782 when he surveyed the Mergui Archipelago. A very good copy.

Fragmente uber Capitain Cooks letze Reise und sein Ende [in] Göttingisches Magazin der Wissenschaften und Litteratur. Herausgegeben von Georg Christoph Lichtenberg und Georg Forster...

Gottingen: bei Johann Christian Dieterich, 1780. 6 parts (Stücke) bound in two volumes, small octavo, with 10 plates (including 5 folding plates: one on blue paper and one folding sheet of music); in blue marbled boards, black labels. First edition: the entire first series of this very important journal which includes an important biographical notice of Captain Cook by his fellow-voyager George Forster, considered "the only man to travel with Cook who embraced the whole critical program of the Enlightenment, and probably the most intelligent and farsighted of them all" (Bernard Smith).Georg Forster's "fragment" on the life of Cook is the first serious biography ever attempted and includes "the earliest authentic and substantial information concerning Cook's Third Voyage, his discovery of Hawaii, and his death at Kealakekua... " (Forbes). Forster co-edited the Göttingisches Magazin with the Anglophile scholar Lichtenberg, whose own biography of Cook, subsequently published as a separate work, also appears here. The importance of this volume to Cook's third voyage is remarkable, including as it does three important biographical studies and an important engraved portrait, as well as the first scientific notice of the natural history of Hawaii, an ornithological treatise by Forster which Forbes notes as "the earliest scientific notice on any aspect of the natural history of Hawaii"). The set also includes both parts of Georg Forster's extremely early account of Tahiti, in part based on the Spanish voyages to Tahiti in the 1770s. A fine set.

[Paris]. Ca. 1780. Map, copperplate engraving, uncolored, 22 x 22 inches, multiple fold as issued. Good condition: there is light offset from folding, a few small areas in the margin of very light dampstaining which is barely visible (just entering image in a two spots), a few short edge tears well outside of image. This is one sheet of a series, this one showing the eastern coast of Asia, with countries marked from south to north: Cochin Chine, Chine, Coree, Tatarie Chinoise, Tungusi, Tartarie Russe, Kamtchatka, Koriaki and Tschuczki. Among the islands in the Pacific Ocean mapped are:Philippines, Carolines, Hainan, Formose, Lekeyo, Isles du Japon, Isle de Sahalien. At the north east corner the coast of present day Alaska is partially mapped, including Oonalaschka. Much of the mapping of the coast lines reflects a very primitive knowledge, notably in the shapes of Korea and Japan. Compass readings are marked at many points in the ocean. This is apparently from Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle."

Original manuscript catalogue of Books in Mr Christian's Library, August 1780, Mr John Christian's Account from February to August 1772...

Cumberland: (Workington Hall?), 1780. Tall folio; 405 x 160 mm., 20 pp. (eight of which are blank), manuscript in ink; sewn in old wrappers entitled "Catalogue Books Aug 1780 Many added since" A remarkable insight on the Bounty mutineer's family and intellectual background: the original manuscript catalogue of the library of his cousin John Christian (later Christian Curwen, 1756-1828). John Christian's library, which included about 550 volumes, can be seen to have been dominated by works in the category of 'History, Lives, Novels etc', with as yet few books on agriculture, in which Christian/Curwen, later founder of the Agricultural Society, was later to take such an interest. The library inventory is enlightening for the perspective it provides of the family background of the famous Bounty mutineer. The Christian family were descended from the prominent Christians of Milntown in the Isle of Man, but had been settled in Cumberland for three generations by the time John Christian was born. The family were well-read and educated: Fletcher Christian's uncle Ewan Christian was a barrister, and his elder brother Edward a prominent jurist and Downing professor of laws at Cambridge. The catalogue is accompanied by a single leaf titled on the verso "Mr John Christian's Account from February to August 1772... ", receipted at the foot by Humphry Christian. The account relates to John Christian's education and other costs, at the age of sixteen. They include some routine expenses (clothing, pocket money, hay for his horse), others less so ("Mourning Cloaths for Princess Dowager of Wales") - but of most interest are his purchases of books: four are named (including Smart's Horace), at least one of which appears in the 1780 catalogue.

Octavo, recent half calf. Early and informative published French notice of Captain Cook's findings on diet and scurvy, disseminating information of vital importance for the health of mariners derived from the first and second voyages of discovery. A noted authority on the treatment of scurvy, Poissonnier Desperrières was a Royal physician and professor at Dijon. Persuasive and well positioned to trial novel methods, Desperrières enjoyed a wide correspondence with physicians in Britain and further afield. Significantly, he tested new antiscorbutic diets propounded by of English doctors (including James Lind and David Macbride) aboard French naval vessels, while also conducting experiments of his own design. This book comprises three essays. The first concerns fevers of Saint-Domingo; the second details Desperrières professional experience as a naval surgeon in the treatment of scurvy, while the third essay in principally concerned with the findings of Captain Cook. The second essay is titled Mémoire sur les avantages qu'il y auroit de changer la nourriture des Gens de mer, and includes speculation on the underlying nature of scurvy alongside the author's fascinating experiments at sea.The third essay Observations sur le Discours de M. Pringle is a response to the Royal Society address delivered by Sir John Pringle, and first published in 1776. Aside from its obvious importance in disseminating Cook's findings on scurvy, it is the detailed notes by Desperrières that make the essay an informative addition to the history of nautical medicine. Desperrières stakes his claim to promoting vegetable antiscorbutics, confidently asserting his trials preceded the first voyage of Captain Cook by some years. He lists the vessels on which antiscorbutics were trialled in 1759, and claims his success was followed by that of Cook: 'braver impunément la mer avec le régime végetal, crosier dans l'Inde, sue le côtes de Salé, &c. Further details of the trial voyages are provided in the preceding essay, so challenging English priority in successfully preventing scurvy at sea. A few old ink spots to the title-page,
