The State of the Prisons in England and Wales, with Preliminary Observations, and an Account of some Foreign Prisons and Hospitals. The Second Edition.

William Eyres, Warrington 1780 - 11 engraved plates (10 of them folding). 8vo. [238 x 144 x 37 mm]. [4]ff, 449, [19] pp. Bound in contemporary tree calf, the covers with a gilt border composed of fillets and repeated impressions of an anthemion and other small floral tools. The spine divided into six panels by double bands with gilt compartments, lettered in the second panel on a red goatskin label, the first and sixth tooled with a repeated floral and pearl festoon roll, the third, fourth and fifth with a swag and small medallions, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt rolls, marbled endleaves, red marbled edges. A very fine copy in an exceptionally handsome binding with striking red marbled edges. John Howard (1726-1790) began his work for prisoners in 1773, when as High Sheriff of Bedford he visited the local gaol. In his subsequent search for prisons in which the gaolers were paid a salary rather than by the inmates, he discovered a shocking degree of squalor. His findings prompted the passing of two Acts, which abolished gaolers' fees and provided for the improvement of the sanitation in prisons and for the medical care of the inmates. Not content simply with these reforms Howard undertook a tour of British and continental gaols, the findings of which were described in The State of the Prisons. First published in 1770, the work stands as the earliest major work on the subject. "His single-handed campaign not only caused a revolution in his lifetime but is the direct progenitor of the subsequent work in the most crucial branch of penal reform" - Printing and the Mind of Man< 224.

Account of the Russian discoveries between Asia and America. To which are added, the conquest of Siberia

London: J. Nichols for T. Cadell, 1780. FIRST EDITION. With 4 large folding plates by T. Kitchin and 1 engraved folding plate by Cheevers. Modern quarter calf over boards; preliminary leaves have small waterstain on lower margin and small insignificant chip on fore-edge, folding map and plate are torn at folds with no loss of image, but both are offset, one on title, the other on the adjoining leaf, text block is very good, with occasional toning, scattered ink stain on verso of Z2. First edition of the author's famous account of his exploration. Coxe visited St. Petersburg and spent time researching Russian activities in the North Pacific and Bering Sea, including collecting journals of Russian expeditions and discoveries made in northwestern America. On his journey, Coxe collected, compared and translated Russian maps and journals subsequent to Bering's 1741 expedition, the first ever given to the public and the first appearances in English. This significant source on Russian exploration and expansion into the northern Pacific in order to open trade with Alaska and the Aeutian Islands is fascinating. "Coxe made suggestions which led the Russians to promote expeditions of discovery to the north parts of Siberia. His list of works on the subject, and his observations on the fur trade between the Russians and the Chinese, are very valuable" (Hill). Coxe (1747-1826) was an English historian, who traveled throughout Europe and Russia. A linguist and Senior Fellow at King's College, Cambridge, he visited many parts of Europe as tutor and traveling companion to various noblemen and gentlemen, including Lord Herbert, son of the Earl of Pembroke.

A Collection of early portraits of Capt. James Cook and representations of the famous "Death of Cook"

Very good overall. The collection of 37 images has been assembled over the last 30 years. It has, at its' nucleus, an early 19th century collection of 10 portraits assembled by Sam'l Cousins, R.A. There are 25 portraits, eight "Death of Cook" images, four images of medals or eulogies with Cook's portrait. The engravings range from 1780-1880 with the majority being in the late 18th century. They include copper, stipple, steel and wood engravings & lithographs, dating from 1780 to 1879. On the verso of one portrait is the pencil inscription "Capt. Cooke (sic) the famous Navigator. 10 separate plates with the great Portrait by Dance. This collection was made by Sam'l Cousins R.A. and cannot now be duplicated." Samuel Cousins appears in Beddie 4269-70 & 4166-69 as the engraver of Bank's portraits from 1822-28. We believe the author of the penciled comment is Colonel Fuller, a noted UK collector of portraits. [NB The portraits are listed by sculptor, as they are referenced in Beddie, "Bibliography of Capt.

*-------* Large wood engraved sheet, stencil-colored, from Orleans, the most important eighteenth century center for popular imagery.
