        Sammelband mit 7 zeitgenössischen Schriften zum Glaubensbekenntnis von Carl Friedrich Bahrdt].

      Sammelband mit sieben Schriften - darunter dem 1779 ohne Verlagshinweise erschienenen Glaubensbekenntnis und zwei weiteren Schriften von Bahrdt selbst. Bei dem ersten Titel handelt es sich um das Gutachten zum Wiener Conclusium, das Bahrdt untersagte, Bücher religiösen Inhalts zu verfassen, ihm Lehre und Predigt untersagte, ihm ein orthodoxes Bekenntnis abverlangte und ihm mit Ausweisung drohte. Das Gutachten bezog sich auf Bahrdts Neuste Offenbarungen Gottes. Nach Erscheinen des Gutachtens schrieb Bahrdt sein mutiges Glaubensbekenntniß, das eine Flut von Gegenschriften hervorrief. Er floh Schließlich vom pflälzischen Dürkheim nach Halle, wo er - unterbrochen von einem Gefängnisaufenthalt - bis zu seinem Tode lebte. - Der Sammelband enthält 1.: "Gutachten zweyer theologischen Facultäten der Würzburgischen und Göttingschen, auf allerhöchsten Befehl Sr. Kayserlichen Majestät über die Übereinstimmung Herrn D. Bahrdts zu Heidesheim, mit den reichsgesetzmäßigen Lehrsystemen ausgefertiget" (Berlin und Leipzig, Decker 1779, 64 Seiten). 2.: Carl Friedrich Bahrdt, "Glaubensbekenntniß" (o.O. o.V. 1779, 24 Seiten), 3.: Johann Salomo Semler, "Antwort auf das Bahrdische Glaubensbekentniß" (Halle, Hemmerde 1779, 8 Bll., 119 Seiten). 4.: Bahrdt, "Kurze Erklärung über Herrn Doktor Semlers Antwort auf das Bahrdtsche Glaubensbekenntniß" (Berlin: Mylius 1779, 8 Seiten). 5.: M.L., "Schreiben an einen Freund in G. den Herrn Doctor Bahrdt und sein Glaubensbekenntniß betreffend" (Berlin und Leipzig, Decker 1779, 30 Seiten). 6.: Johann Friedrich Teller, "D. Carl Friedrich Bahrdts berüchtigtes Glaubensbekenntniß aus alter guter Bekanntschaft von Wort zu Worte berichtigt" (= Anhang zum dritten Bande der Anekdoten für Prediger und Priester zur Unterhaltung. - Leipzig: Schneidern 1780, 63 Seiten). 7.: Bahrdt, "Eine Erklärung an das Publikum über das Bahrdtische Glaubensbekenntniß von ihm selbst" (Berlin, Mylius 1780, 22 Seiten). - Einband gebräunt, etwas berieben und etwas bestoßen, das Bezugspapier mit kleineren Abplatzungen, vorne und hinten einige Seiten gering fleckig, vorderer Vorsatz mit Inhaltsverzeichnis von alter Hand. Sonst und insgesamt gutes Exemplar.

Hackert 1779", sulla destra "Gravé par George Hackert". Bella veduta animata della località umbra, realizzata con una pittoresca visione delle rovine del Ponte di Augusto sulla Nera a Narni; due figure in primo piano, alla destra della parte incisa. Philipp Jakob Hackert (1737 - 1807), di nazionalità tedesca, compì fin da giovanissimo numerosi viaggi in Italia e si stabilì definitivamente a Roma nel 1768. Divenne pittore di corte del re di Napoli, e nel 1780 realizzò il famoso ciclo di dipinti "Dieci vedute della casa di campagna di Orazio". Celebri le pitture raffiguranti Caserta e la sua reggia.         A Catalogue of a Valuable Collection of Greek, Roman, British, Saxon, and English, Coins and Medals, in Gold, Silver and Copper, Antique Curiosities, Gems, and Books, of a Gentleman, deceased;

      Which will be sold by Auction, by Mr. Gerard, at his House, in Litchfield-Street, St. Anne's, Soho, on Thursday, the 18th of March, 1779, and the Two following days…Catalogues to be had, gratis, at Mr. Gerard's aforesaid. 12 pp. 8vo, early half-calf & marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. [London: 1779]. John Gerard was active as an auctioneer of books, coins, medals, and other antiquities from 1772 until his death in 1794. This is an attractive example of the sort of catalogue he issued every couple of months, interleaved and neatly priced with buyers' names for all but the last thirty lots. The sale consisted of about 300 lots, mostly coins and miscellaneous antiquities, but with a section of 21 lots of books and manuscripts at the end of the first day. Most intriguing is lot 90: "Sebastian Munster's brief Collection of strange and wonderful Things, bound in morocco, bl. let. 1566, - Rybaut's Description of Florida, bl. let. - 1566." Of the first title three editions are recorded - 1572, 1574, and 1576 - all exceedingly rare. The English translation of Jean Ribaut's descriptions of Florida was in fact printed in 1563, and is known in two copies only, at the British Library and Lambeth Palace. At the auction, these two books fetched 12s. 6d. and were acquired by "Money." In excellent condition and rare, as are virtually all Gerard sale catalogues. ESTC locates no copy in the U.S. and only four in the U.K. ❧ Munby & Coral, p. 76.

        THE EXAMINATION OF JOSEPH GALLOWAY, Esq; Late Speaker of the House of Assembly of Pennsylvania. Before the House of Commons, in a committee on the American Papers. With Explanatory Notes.

      London, J. Wilkie, 1779. FIRST EDITION, 1779, 8vo, approximately 210 x 125 mm, 8¼ x 4¾ inches, pages: [2], 1-85, bound in half morocco over marbled sides, gilt dividing lines, gilt lettering to spine with gilt motif and rules at head and tail, marbled endpapers. Spine rubbed, tail of spine very slightly chipped, upper hinge cracked but holding firmly, gilt lettering on spine slightly worn, corners slightly rubbed, title page lightly foxed, published as a pamphlet with stab holes showing in inner margins. A very good copy of the first edition. Reprinted the following year in London, there was no American edition until 1855. Joseph Galloway (1731-1803) was a prominent loyalist during the American Revolution. He was born at West River, Maryland and moved with his father to Pennsylvania in 1740, where he received a liberal schooling. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and began practice in Philadelphia. Galloway was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1757-1775 and served as Speaker of the House from 1766-1774. He was a member of the Continental Congress in 1774, where he proposed a compromise plan for Union with Great Britain which would provide the colonies with their own parliament subject to the crown. He signed the nonimportation agreement, but was opposed to independence of the thirteen colonies and remained loyal to the King. In December of 1776, Galloway joined the British General Howe and accompanied him on his capture of Philadelphia. During the British occupation, he was appointed Superintendent of Police, and headed the civil government. When the British withdrew, he went with them, and, in 1778, he moved to England. That same year, the Pennsylvania General Assembly convicted him of high treason and confiscated his estates. In 1779 he was examined before the House of Commons on the conduct of the war in America, and made accusations against the British commander, claiming that the failure of the British was because of General Howe's incompetence. See A Dictionary of Books Relating to America by Joseph Sabin, Volume 1, Galloway, column 136, 26427. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. POSTAGE AT COST.

Brunet I, 1103.

8vo, cont. French red half-morocco & boards, flat spine charmingly gilt, with the tool of a harp in the center of the compartments, in the second compartment a green morocco lettering piece. Paris: Dessain, 1779. A most unusual copy of this handsomely printed sale catalogue; it is the first of several sales, here held under the maiden name of his wife "Filheul," by which Chardin, one of the most important Parisian booksellers of his time, periodically disposed of a portion of his vast stock. We know of later sales in 1806, 1819 (in London), and 1824. This did not prevent Chardin from selling many rare books and MSS. directly to collectors throughout his career - the most outstanding was no doubt the Psalter of St. Louis which he sold to a Russian Grand Duke, and which Louis XVII acquired from him for the Bibliothèque Royale. The above catalogue, especially rich in early French books, is extremely well compiled and has been long held in high esteem. According to Longchamp, I, p. 496, La Vallière purchased heavily at this sale. One of the remarkable features of this catalogue is the large number of heterodox and politically subversive books betraying Chardin's sympathies which, years later, made him an enthusiastic supporter of the Revolution: of 122 lots only the number is given and their authors and titles are indicated by dots. In our copy these have been supplied by Frédéric Lachèvre, the well-known bibliographer (d. ca. 1957) in his wonderfully neat and spidery hand, adding numerous notes to various other lots, derived from contemporary annotations in other copies of the catalogue at his disposal. Chardin was eulogized at length by Dibdin who had him portrayed by Lewis in his Tour in France and Germany, II, pp. 400-404. Fine and handsome copy with the bookplates of F. Lachèvre and A.L. McLaughlin. 2544 lots; priced throughout in a contemporary hand. ?         IN COUNCIL. PHILADELPHIA, FEBRUARY 3rd, 1779. PRESENT HIS EXCELLENCY JOSEPH REED, ESQ. PRESIDENT, HON GEORGE BRYAN ESQ...THIS BOARD HAVING CONSIDERED THE GENERAL TENOR AND COURSE OF THE MILITARY COMMAND OF MAJOR GENERAL ARNOLD...[caption title] [with:] PROCEEDINGS OF THE SUPREME EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA IN THE CASE OF BENEDICT ARNOLD [caption title]

      Philadelphia: Francis Bailey; Hall and Sellers, 1779. Broadside, approximately 15 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches, plus 11pp. Dbd. Folio broadside tipped onto small quarto pamphlet. Small portion of lower corner of broadside torn away, not affecting text. Contemporary ink manuscript annotations on broadside. Light foxing and tanning. Very good. In a modern cloth clamshell box with printed paper labels. A unique broadside relating to the charges eventually brought against Benedict Arnold in a court-martial for his dubious behavior and his "illegal and oppressive conduct" as the military governor of Philadelphia in 1778 and 1779, just prior to his treasonous attempt to turn over West Point to the British. Seriously wounded at the battle of Saratoga and unable to take a field command, Arnold was appointed the governor of Philadelphia by General Washington after the Continental Army had retaken the city and martial law had been imposed. Arnold immediately antagonized the Patriot citizenry by his warm treatment of the Loyalists who remained in the city, and by socializing heavily with the prominent members of that group, eventually marrying Peggy Shippen, the daughter of a wealthy Loyalist merchant. Arnold further aroused their ire by conducting a good deal of business across enemy lines with businesses in New York, often on the black market, enriching himself while much of the city was in a state of economic stagnation and deprivation. The outlet for this anger was the Patriot state government, the Supreme Executive Council. The accusations in this broadside, laid out in eight articles and two resolutions and published while Arnold was with Washington at Valley Forge, relate principally to a specific incident in which Arnold was said to have appropriated transport wagons for his personal use without remunerating the owners. This was in fact the only charge at his court-martial later in the year of which he would be convicted. Other accusations include the allowance of an enemy ship into port, the capricious closing of stores for the benefit of his own business, and the imposition of "menial offices upon the sons of freemen of this State." The charges were brought against Arnold in February, 1779, when these items were published, although his trial did not begin for some months. The Council charged that Arnold, "Hath been in many respects oppressive to the faithful subjects of this state, unworthy of his rank and station, highly discouraging to those who have manifested their attachment to the liberties and interests of America, and disrespectful to the Supreme Executive Authority of the State." Though they demand further action, the Council stipulates that, "nothing but the most urgent and pressing necessity can justify and induce this board to call forth any waggons or militia, or otherwise subject the good people of this State, to the power of General Arnold," and promise to advance a sum of four hundred fifty pounds to the out-of-pocket wagoneers. This copy of the broadside is the printer's proof, and is probably unique. It contains manuscript corrections of the final paragraph, which in this version is mistakenly numbered as a ninth article and has several words missing, in the hand of Timothy Matlack, the secretary of the Council. ESTC locates only five copies of the published broadside and no copies of this proof. The broadside is tipped onto a printing of the proceedings and correspondence of the Council that establish the will to publicly censure Arnold in such a manner and draw up the accusatory articles that would appear. This pamphlet is also quite rare, with ESTC noting just eight copies. Because it was bound with Matlack's copy of the broadside, it is likely that this, too, was Matlack's copy. Arnold's court-martial led to his removal as military governor of Philadelphia, and deeply imbittered him, although he had clearly used the office to enrich himself. His anger was only increased by the need to support the lifestyle to which his wife was accustomed and to which he aspired. By May, 1779, he had opened a secret correspondence with British Major John Andre. The trial ground on through the fall, and at the beginning of 1780, Arnold was finally convicted of two minor charges. By this time he had advanced far down the road toward treason, already passing military information to the British. In June of 1780 Washington, perhaps feeling Arnold had been treated poorly considering his heroic conduct earlier in the war, sought to placate him by appointing him commander of the key post of West Point. The rest is history, a chain of events which all flowed from Arnold's court-martial. EVANS 16439, 16448. HILDEBURN 3889, 3935.

        A Philosophical and Political History of the Settlements and trade of the Europeans in the East and West Indies

      4 volumes (complete) Contemporary boards, with a recent, sympathetic spine. Inside board of three of the volumes has the bookplate of Richard Harison* (the fourth volume has the ghosting to show that it was there). Frontis illus. of Raynal to vol. 1. Also in vol 1 is a large folding map of the East Indian settlements (all maps are by Thomas Kitchin). Vol.2 contains a large folding map of European settlements in South and Western America. Vol. 3. has a smaller folding map of the West Indies. Vol. 4. contains the folding map of North America. An influential work, a significant portion of which is said to have been written by Diderot and others. The book was condemned by the French Parliament and church dignitaries because of its attacks on the clergy and on Europeans generally for their conduct towards the natives of the Indies.*Each volume bears the bookplate of Richard Harison esq. Harison was an American lawyer, and in 1778 he refused allegiance to the United States, and so was suspended from the New York bar. This work was published the following year, and he had plenty of time to read it before his readmission to the bar in 1786. Perhaps it was reading of the European's treatment of their colonists throughout the world that changed his position. Surprisingly in 1789 George Washington made him the first District Attorney for New York in the newly independent America. It was very unusual that such a lucrative post (accruing revenues from the port of New York) would be given to a former traitor - In fact, of Washington's nearly 100 nominations for cabinet & similar positions - only 2 (including this) were to former Tories. As a flight of fancy, I like to think that Harison quoted this very work in discussions with Washington prior to his appointment.

        Le Calendrier de la Cour ... pour l'année Mil sept cent soixante-dix-neuf

      Paris: veuve Herissant, 1779. 32mo (binding size 106 x 56 mm). [120] pp., the first and last leaves mounted on the free endpapers, and printed respectively on recto and verso only (the first leaf with publisher's advertisement. Woodcut title vignette, small woodcuts of eclipses. Green morocco, covers gold-blocked with rocaille panel design, sunrays or scallop design or spider-web at center, copper and red Dutch-gilt endpapers, g.e. (head and tail of spine slightly bumped, else fine).*** A fine example of one of the longest published Parisian almanacs, published without interruption from 1700 to 1792, and containing useful information for ladies and gentleman of the Court. Invented by the printer-publisher and typefounder Jean-Jacques Estienne Collombat (1668-1744), the Calendrier de la Cour became a familiar fixture of court life. These little books continued to be referred to as "Collombats" long after the printer's death, when their publication was continued by the printer Hérissant and later his widow. This copy is in a typical decorated morocco binding. Grand Carteret, p. xli, describes the diversity of border- and center-stamps used by the binders who worked with the publishers of the Calendrier de la Cour, the Etrennes Mignonnes, and other annuals; a variety of borders could be interchanged with different centerpiece motifs. "Les dentelles souvent compliquées, qui servaient d'encadrement, à ces milieux frappés en or plein, étaient de composition très variée, et venaient d'un seul coup" (i.e., they were blocked rather than built up from individual tools). This almanac may have been bound by Jean-Charles-Henri Lemonnier, one of the principal binders of "Collombats" (Savigny de Moncorps, p. 16). His successor Tessier produced a catalogue of the bindery's tools, most of must have been inherited from Lemonnier, in 1789 (Catalogue des fers qui sont dans la boête à dorer de Tessier), a few of which are reproduced in the cited article by Savigny de Moncorps. The Catalogue (whose present location is unknown) lists "20 engraved plaques for the Collombat, 13 for the Etrennes Mignonnes, and about 50 for the centers of the almanacs [i.e., of the covers]: little standing figures, portraits of the King and Queen, large and small bouquets, groups of birds, vases, and flower baskets, etc."(Grand-Carteret, p. xli, cataloguer's translation). Cf. Grand-Carteret no. 92 and p. xli; Vicomte de Savigny de Moncorps, "Un Catalogue de fers à dorer du XVIIIe siècle," Le Livre et l'Image (1893), 2:14-23 (available online).

        The History of Women, from the Earliest Antiquity, to the Present Time; Giving Some Account of Almost Every Interesting Particular Concerning that Sex, Among all Nations, Ancient and Modern

      London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, in the Strand, 1779. First edition of this popular eighteenth-century history, a detailed (if unsystematic) look at the social and civil status of women around the world, compiled by an Edinburgh physician: "As we find the men emerging from ignorance and brutality, and approaching to knowledge and refinement; the rank, therefore, and condition, in which we find women in any country, mark out to us with the greatest precision, the exact point in the scale of civil society, to which the people of such country have arrived." Subjects covered include women's education, manners, dress, marriage, child-rearing, and labor, with a concluding chapter on the comparatively secure legal rights of British women. Alexander describes his work as "composed solely for the amusement and instruction of the Fair Sex," and indeed, this copy belonged to a woman, Catherine Bouverie. In 1810, Catherine's husband Edward inherited Delapré Abbey, a medieval nunnery surrendered to Henry VIII: both volumes bear the abbey's armorial bookplate. ESTC T36567. A very good copy of a compelling Scottish Enlightenment work, with excellent provenance. Two quarto volumes, pp. [8], 1-368, [14]; [4], 1-344, [14]. Contemporary pale blue marbled boards rebacked in speckled calf, red morocco spine labels, spines ruled and lettered in gilt, boards recornered in vellum at an early date. Index in both volumes. Bookplate of Delapré Abbey in both volumes, ink ownership inscription "Catherine Bouverie 1793" to both title pages. Light rubbing to boards; scattered foxing to text block, heavier to first and last signatures.
