St. Cecilia; Or, the Lady's and Gentleman's Harmonious Companion: Being a Select Collection of Scots and English Songs; many of which are originals. Together with a set of Favourite Catches and Glees: Also a Variety of the most Celebrated Toasts and Sentiments.

Edinburgh: Printed by W. Darling for C. Wilson; and sold by J. Dickson and C. Elliot 1779 - FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 150 x 89 mms., pp. vii [8 - 9] 10 - 384, with additional engraved title-page and engraved frontispiece by Cowan, contemporary sheepskin, red morocco label, additional paper label, top and base of spine chipped, some other slight general wear to binding but generally a very good copy, with autograph "W. M. Adey" and a note in his hand asserting the collection to be and "immitation [sic] of Alan Ramsay's 'The tea-table Miscellany'." Wilson dedicates the work to the Earl of Haddington, probably Thomas Hamilton, seventh earl of Haddington (1720/21–1795), a member of The Poker Club and Governor of the Edinburgh Musical Society. Wilson complains in his preface that collections of this sort "abounded too much with obscene Songs, that tend to suppress Virtue, which plainly denotes that the Editors thereof have but a mean Taste. Particular Care hat been taken in the Selection of this Edition, and nothing is inserted that can possibly give the least offence to that delicacy of taste for which the present Age is so remarkable." Spot the double entendre.

Historia Coro-Graphica Natural y Evangélica de la Nueva Andalucía, Provincias de Cumana, Guayana y Vertientes del Río Orinoco.

[Madrid] 1779 - "An Important Source For The History Of Venezuela And The Guiana.Fine Folding Map. Indians Customs". Folio; engraved title-page, folding map and three plates after Jose Ramos by Bartolomé Vazquez; contemporary Spanish calf. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST GENERAL HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION OF THE EASTERN PROVINCES OF VENEZUELA AND OF THE GUYANAS. Caulin was a Spanish Dominican missionary who had lived in the colonies for many years during their period of greatest colonial development. His account describes the geography, natural history, discovery and conquest, and missionary activities of Spaniards in Venezuela. He also gives long descriptions of the customs of the Indians. he first part gives a topographical survey of the countries, deals with their agricultural products, the vegetation, the animal world, the different populations, their forms of government, their pagan superstitions, etc. The second deals with the conquest and the Conquistadors. But the main interest centers around the missionary activities and martyrs among the missionaries. It is a rare book; Palau observes that only a very limited number of copies were distributed. The very detailed map of New Andalucia is dated 1778 and was engraved by Louis de Surville by order of José de Galvez, then minister of the Indies of Spain. * Bell Library C-154; JCB (I), p. 144; Medica 4893; Palau 50407 ("Obra interesante"); Sabin 11570.

(Brunet, IV, 395. Maire, I, 246-255. Tchemerzine-Scheler, V, 76). Quelques petites griffures à la reliure, quelques rousseurs. Bel exemplaire, très bien relié. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

D.S.B., II, pp. 111 sq. Édition originale. "It was not until 1779 that Bezout published his Théorie des équations algébriques, his major work on elimination theory. Its best-known achievement is the statement and proof of Bezout's theorem : 'The degree of the final equation resulting from any number of complete equations in the same number of unknowns, and of any degrees, is equal to the product of the degrees of the equations. ' Bezout, following Euler, defined a complete polynomial as one that contains each possible combination of the unknowns whose degree is more than the degree of the polynomial. Bezout also computed that the degree of the resultant equation is less that the product of the degrees for various systems of incomplete equations. The proof makes one marvel at the ingenuity of Bezout, who, like Euler, not only could manipulate formulas but also had the ability to choose those manipulations that would be fruitful" (D.S.B.). "In the 1770's Sigaud collaborated with Macquer in investigating the aeriform fluids or "airs", newly discovered by Priestley. In 1776 they burned a quantity of the so-called "inflammable air" (hydrogen), and by holding a porcelain saucer over the flame they managed to collect a few drops of a colorless liquid that both researchers agreed was water. The experiment is often cited as an anticipation of some of the work later done by Cavendish, Lavoisier, and Monge on the synthesis of water" (D.S.B. XII, p.427). "An important treatise, in which are described the preparation, properties, and chemical reactions of several gases, including carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, hydrogen. There are numerous references to the earlier experiments of Boyle, Hales, Helmont, Magellan, Nooth, et al. In 1776 Sigaud assisted Macquer in experiments showing that water is produced when hydrogen burns in air. Pp.227-284 describe these experiments, which greatly helped Cavendish, Lavoisier and Monge in their later investigations on the composition of water" (Neville). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Kingdom of Sardinia. "Le Royaume de Sardaigne.

Europe: Venice, Remondini, 1779. Copper engraved map of Sardinia, from Santini's "Atlas universel dressé sur les meilleures cartes modernes". Original outline colour; verso blank. The map shows the island in large scale with parts entering the scale lines, with part of Corsica to top. Decorative title cartouche upper right, text giving the history of the island upper lef and list ogf mineral mines to lower left Dark impression; paper lightly toned. Francois [Francesco] Santini was an Italian cartographer and map publisher based in Venice, who re-issued the works of Robert de Vaugondy, Homann's Heirs and De L'Isle. Cartography in Italy was then at a rather low ebb, so Santini, essentially a publisher rather than a map-maker modelled his work on two of the leading practitioners of cartography in Europe, the French map-makers Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy and their "Atlas Universel" first published in 1758, and was much re-issued thereafter. The commercial success of the Atlas led Santini, to commission. a new set of plates published between 1776-84, being almost exact copies of the original French maps to which were added new maps of Italy for the home market. Alexis Hubert Jaillot (c. 1632- 1712) Hubert Jaillot trained as a sculptor. When he married the daughter of Nicholas Berey, he found himself positioned to inherit a lucrative map and print publishing firm.on the death of Nicholas Sanson, the premier French cartographer of the day, . Jaillot negotiated with his heirs to republish much of Sanson's work. Though not a cartographer himself, Jaillot's access to the Sanson plates enabled him to publish numerous maps and atlases with only slight modifications and updates to the originals. As a sculptor and an artist, Jaillot's maps were particularly admired for their elaborate and meaningful allegorical title cartouches and other decorative elements. Jaillot used his allegorical cartouche work to extol the virtues of the Sun King Louis IV, and his military and political triumphs. These earned him the patronage of the French crown who used his maps in the tutoring of the young Dauphin. In 1686 he was awarded the title of Geographe du Roi and with it significant prestige and the coveted yearly stipend of 600 Livres. Jaillot was one of the last French map makers to acquire this title. Louis XV, after taking the throne, replaced the position with the more prestigious and singular title of Premier Geographe du Roi. Jaillot died in Paris in 1712. His most important work was his 1693 "Le Neptune Francois". Remondini (fl. c. 1657 - 1861) were a family of printers who worked originally based in Bassano del Grappa, near Venice. Giovanni Antonio Remondini (1634-1711), the family patriarch, was born in Padua in 1634. In 1657, he took a home the main square of Bassano where he opened a shop drapes, wool, silk and iron tools. He also sold woodcuts of saints which proved popular with local farmers who believed they bought spiritual protection. When Giovanni died in 1711 his printing business fell into the hands of his son, Joseph Remondini. In 1750 Joseph expended the family business into Venice proper. Having several paper factories established by Giovanni Antonio, the Remondini were in a position to undercut competitors in Venice. The Remondini employed a number of talented engravers, including Paolo Santini, an Abbot who specialized in sacred images as well as cartography. Their corpus includes several beautifully produced atlases, though, cartographically speaking, little in the way of original work. The family fell into decline following the Napoleonic invasions, finally closing their doors in 1861 Phillips 647. Europe Italy & Malta Sardinia Sardaigne

Printed map, hand-colored. 8 pp. Large 4to, attractive calf-backed paste-paper boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Leipzig: Breitkopf, 1779. First edition of this rare cartographical work, which includes a specimen of the author's third experiment in map printing. In 1777, Breitkopf (1719-94), the eminent printer, type-founder, and bookseller, published another slight work entitled Ueber den Druck der geographischen Charten which described his invention for printing maps with movable type. "He claimed to have been the inventor of map printing by the use of types, or what is known as 'typometry.' William Haas, a type-founder of Basle, appears to have previously published a method somewhat similar, but Breitkopf had been experimenting on the matter for some twelve years previously, and it was only his dissatisfaction with the result obtained that induced him to keep his achievements to himself."-Bigmore & Wyman, I, p. 81. This is his third experiment in typometry, issued as a New Year's gift, for which he has printed a delightful hand-colored map entirely from printing types and ornaments entitled at head "Charte von dem Quelle der Wünsche." The towns and regions all have appropriate and charming names referring to desire and happiness. A fine copy, without the usual foxing, of a most interesting work. ❧ Bagrow, History of Cartography, p. 219.

Autograph Letter (in Third Person) to George Steevens, 1779..

1779. Blackstone Discusses Shakespeare [Manuscript]. Blackstone, Sir William [1723-1780]. [Steevens, George (1736-1800)]. [Autograph Letter (in Third Person) to George Steevens, London, Lincoln's Inn Fields, 26 April 1779]. [And] [Autograph Transcription Signed ('W.B.'), 1 April 1779, London, Lincoln's Inn Fields, 26 April 1779]. Two 9-1/2" x 7-1/2" bifolia, five pages of text (both with archival guard at inner edge). Light toning, vertical and horizontal fold lines. "Autograph of Judge Blackstone, given me by his great-nephew" to head of autograph transcription. $12,500. * Blackstone's observations on Shakespeare. Addressed to the eminent Shakespearean George Steevens, the letter discusses Blackstone's critical notes on Shakespeare, which were ultimately published the following year (after his death) in Edmund Malone's supplement to the 1778 edition of Shakespeare's plays by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. Blackstone returns a transcription of the notes "together with the new ones that have occurred on a transient Perusal of Mr Steevens's second edition. He will see that Sir W[illia]m (Author-like) continues a little prejudiced in favour of One of his Emendations, which Mr Steevens is afraid of proposing: but, to make amends, he has given up another to Mr Steevens's more accurate Judgement." He adds that there is no need to send a transcript of the new "observations," and concludes with a note on a legal case: "Inquiry has been made at the Exchequer; - & [the] Result is, that nothing can be done there till the Fine is estreated, & then it may be discharged upon Motion supported by Affidavit." The autograph transcription that accompanies the letter is a carefully exact copy of a letter written by William Warburton [1698-1779], the churchman, writer and literary critic best known for his editions of Pope and Shakespeare, in 1726. It discusses literary imitation in the works of English poets, especially Addison's Cato.

Youth Rescued from a Shark, This Representation is founded on the following Fact: a Youth bathing in the Harbour of Havannah, was twice seized by a Shark from which , (though with the Loss of the Flesh & Foot, torn from the Right Leg), He disentangled himself & was, by the assistance of a Boat's Crew, sav'd from the Jaws of the voracious Animal: for in the Moment it was attempting to seize its Prey (a third Time) a Sailor with a Boat Hook drove it from its pursuit. / Jeune Homme sauvé de l'attaque d'un Requien...[text repeated in French]

London: Published by V. Green, Newman Street, Oxford Street, and at No. 52, Strand, 1779. Mezzotint. Printed on heavy laid paper. Several expertly repaired tears in top and bottom margins. Image size: 18 1/4 x 23 3/4 inches. Considered one of the most important eighteenth century mezzotints, "Youth Rescued from a Shark" made the fortunes of both Valentine Green and the expatriate American painter John Singleton CopleyBrook Watson, a London merchant, commissioned his friend John Singleton Copley to paint a scene from his youth depicting the fateful night when he was attacked by a shark while swimming in Havana Harbor. Although Watson survived the attack, after being rescued by his fellow shipmen, he lost his leg during the encounter. "Watson and the Shark" launched Copley's career in London, making him one of the most celebrated American painters on the Continent. The painting became a metaphor for salvation and the triumph over adversity and was widely heralded as the most important painting of the age.Based on Copley's masterpiece, Green's large mezzotint became one of the most sought after prints on the market. It sold so well in fact, that Green was forced to scrape a second and a third plate of the image to satisfy public demand. The wide appeal of Green's mezzotint heightened Copley's fame and catapulted both engraver and painter to the top of the English art world. In the history of engraving, no printmaker has achieved such depth and precision as Valentine Green. He is considered the father of the English mezzotint because through his example we can see the pinnacle of mezzotint engraving. During his career, Green produced some of the most beautiful and sought after 18th century mezzotints. At an early age Green apprenticed himself to Robert Hancock of Worcester, where he produced his first published work 'A Survey of the City of Worcester'. In 1765 Green moved to London where his excellent scraping soon earned him a much-celebrated reputation. He soon became mezzotint engraver to George III, and a member of the Royal Academy. Throughout his industrious career, Green scratched over 400 plates working from works by Copley, Reynolds and West.Whitman, Valentine Green 152; Chaloner Smith, British Mezzotinto Portraits 209; Clayton, The English Print , p. 243, no. 38.

Bello e fresco esemplare, stampato su carta azzurrina.
