Declaration signer William Whipple signs a document about resupplying the Army

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, November 11, 1778. 7.25" x 12". "Manuscript document signed ""Wm. Whipple"", 2 pages, dated November 11, 1778, measuring 7.25"" x 12"", countersigned by Gouverneur Morris and Nathanial Scudder. Just a day prior to this circular letter, the Continental Congress appointed William Whipple, Gouverneur Morris, and Nathaniel Scudder to a special committee to oversee the commissary and quartermaster departments, which were chafing under supply chain problems. The committee sent this circular letter to all of the state governors, and, in this case, Continental Congress President Henry Laurens. The committee insists that the state executives understand “the impracticability of continuing the war, at least of continuing it to advantage, while we remain supremely ignorant of the Supplies our Country is capable of affording” while urging vigilance against the graft and fraud that had previously plagued the supply chain. In full: ""Circular Philadelphia 11th November 1778;In Committee of Congress; Sir; The great & increasing difficulties in the Quarter Masters & Commissary Generals Departments, have induced Congress to adopt the Resolution, of which we have the Honor to enclose you a Copy. Among the measures immediately necessary for placing [these] matters on a proper foundation, is the acquiring a knowledge of the proper resources of these States. The Articles of consumption which we would most particularly be informed of, are Flour, Wheat, Rye, Barley, Oats, Corn & Rice, Beef, Pork, working Oxen & Horses, Cyder & Vinegar. The Ignorance & the Interests of mankind oppose so strongly our wishes in this respect, that after every Effort & every prudent precaution, our information will perhaps be of far less importance than could be wished. It is however our Duty to aim at it, and we have no reason to doubt your Excellency’s Concurrence in the Steps necessary to attain what we have in view: Especially when it is considered, how readily your own good Sence will dictate, the impracticability of continuing the war, at least of continuing it to advantage, while we remain supremely ignorant of the Supplies our Country is capable of affording. We have to intreat that your Excellency, from your knowledge of the productions of the several parts of your State, would appoint some proper persons in whose Industry & Secrecy you can confide, to make proper Lists through the districts you shall severally allott to them, of the Quantity & number of such of the Articles above named, as are produced in it, which may probably be over & above the necessary consumption of the Inhabitants, and also as nearly as possible the Quantity &c which they consume over and above their own production, or of what they do not produce. We hope that these lists may be transmitted to us, with all convenient Speed, to the End that proper Arrangements may immediately be made for the ensueing Campaign. Upon transmitting an Account of the Expenses which may accrue in this Business, they shall immediately be paid. You will perceive Sir, that every precaution should be taken to prevent this Object from transpiring, lest as on many former Occasions the Devoted Adherents of Lucre should make a gain of the Publick Distresses. We are respectfully Your Excellency’s most Obt & Humble Servants Nath.l Scudder Gouv Morris W.m Whipple""William Whipple (1730-1785) signed the Declaration of Independence as a representative to the Continental Congress from New Hampshire. He was a ship’s captain and established himself as a merchant in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He also served in the provincial congress, New Hampshire House of Representatives, Committee of Safety. He became a brigadier general in the New Hampshire state militia and led successful campaigns against British General Burgoyne in the Battles of Stillwater and Saratoga. In 1778, he successfully led New Hampshire troops in the Battle of Rhode Island. He later was named associate justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court. Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816) was born in Westchester County, New York, in what is now part of the Bronx. He was a member of New York’s revolutionary provincial congress (1775-1777) served in the militia, drafted New York’s state constitution along with John Jay and Robert Livingstone, and joined the local Committee of Safety. From 1777-1778 he served in the Continental Congress and signed the Articles of Confederation before losing reelection in 1779. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia and played a major role there, giving 173 speeches (more than any other delegate), writing the document’s Preamble, and helping write the final draft, and signing the Constitution. He later served as minister to France (1792) and as a U.S. Senator.Nathaniel Scudder (1733-1781) was a physician who served New Jersey as a delegate to the provincial congress and later the Continental Congress, where he signed the Articles of Confederation. He was also a member of the county Committee of Safety, the militia, and the New Jersey Legislative Council and General Assembly.Another copy of this circular, addressed to the Governor of North Carolina, sold at Sotheby’s in 2010 for over $18,000.Condition: Very good. The text is somewhat light though entirely legible; our scans provide an accurate picture. Professional archival restorations at folds, infill with loss of one word. Small holes."

[17] ff., 64, [2], 6 p.. 1778 Just over a decade after the fall of the Aztec empire to the Spanish, Fray Pedro de Gante, with the help of other Franciscan missionaries, founded in 1532 the first or the second hospital exclusively for the treatment of Indians. (The exact dates of the establishment of this hospital and that founded by Vasco de Quiroga are still to be determined.) It operated as the only such hospital with royal sponsorship, and that from the very beginning, but without a formal, written constitution until 1778. This is the first printing of the thirteen treatises that compose the document. They address every phase of the hospital's operation — the roles of surgeons, doctors, chaplains, administrators, majordomo, porters, aides, and so on. There is also a very informative historical introduction. One must question whether this was a blueprint or a document that was actually put into effect. In any case, reading it and reading between its lines offers great insight into the basic structure, personnel, and operation of the hospital. The work is printed in large roman type and bears the engraved coat of arms of the king, signed by Benavides, on the title-page. The text contains two large historiated woodcut initials and one large woodcut headpiece. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only three copies in the U.S. Recased in old vellum; a few short tears to the edges of the title-leaf, repaired. Else very good.

Eloge de M. de Voltaire, Composé au Camp de Schatzlar par S.M. le Roi de Prusse (.).

      - Berlin, G. J. Decker, s.d. [1778]. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Mexico 1778 - The first recorded eclipse in the United States; printed in Mexico. 1778. Mexico. Felipe de Zuñiga y Ontiveros. First edition. Extremely scarce Mexican publication on the total solar eclipse occurred in 1778 (an interposition of the Moon between the Earth and the Sun, obscuring the image of the Sun from an Earth perspective and partially darkening the Earth); the eclipse was visible in Mexico, the Southeastern United States and parts of Africa. This was the first recorded eclipse in the United States (darkening parts of California towards New England). Leon y Gama´s work is considered the most reputable of its kind published in Mexico during the colony “se considera, desde el punto de vista matemático y astronómico, el trabajo más serio publicado en México durante el siglo XVIII” (Gustavo Soriano Cedillo). It helped fix the problem of determining the longitude and latitude of the city of Mexico. The map was published with a short tract entitled “Descripcion orthographica universal del eclipse de sol del dia 24 de Junio de 1778”; it is divided in two, the first part describes the ephemerides of the astronomical phenomenon; the second contains the description of the instruments employed and his modus operandi, basing his calculus in the methods of Kepler and Cassini. The map is titled "Transito de la sombra y penumbra de la Luna sobre la superficie de la Tierra", it has a strange projection of the Earth: extends from California to Norway, aimed to illustrate the shadow cast by the eclipse of 24th June 1778. Leon y Gama (1735 – 1802) was a Mexican astronomer, writer, and American anthropologist; he authored several titles, amongst which, the Descripcion historica y cronologica de las dos piedras (1790) is probably the most famous, describing the newly discovered Piedra del Sol. Medina, Mexico, 7003. Palau, 135586. Sabin, 40061. Gustavo Soriano Cedillo, “Eclipse total de Sol del 24 de junio de 1778” (Anuario del Observatorio Astronómico Nacional, 1998).         The Gentle Shepherd, A Pastoral Comedy.

Royal 4to., in contemporary full mottled calf, boards with elaborate gilt panels with corner tools, rebacked preserving original rich gilt spine, contrasting red leather label, all edges gilt. Aquatint portrait frontispiece and 12 aquatint plates engraved by David Allan, pp.18 of engraved music at rear. Corners rubbed, a little light browning to margins of plates, neat ink name dated 1848, generally a very good crisp copy. "Ramsay?s play, The Gentle Shepherd first published in 1725, enjoyed massive success both in his lifetime and for several years after his death. This Scots pastoral drama is an entirely original creation, which develops the pastoral genre and fixes it within a Scottish context. Although the play belongs to the sentimental age, its value remains to this day: Ramsay presents his audience with skilful sections of lyric and song, and daringly attempts to revive the Scottish theatrical tradition under the strict codes of Calvinism. The Gentle Shepherd helps make possible John Home?s Douglas, Fergusson?s Scots pastorals and much of Burns?s work." The Foulis Press first published The Gentle Shepherd in 1743, and they printed it again in 1745, 1747, 1750, and 1752, before issuing this handsomely printed and illustrated edition in 1788. David Allan who illustrated this edition was sometimes called the "Scottish Hogarth"

Paris, Chez Montard. 1778. Two parts in one vol., 8vo., xv + (1) + 280 + (1) + 157 + (6)pp., with one extended folding table, and numerous other tables in the text, small piece torn away from one leaf margin but printed surface not affected, bound in contemporary French catspaw calf, spine fully gilt and labelled, red edges, marbled endpapers, slight wear to fore-edges but still a fine and handsome copy. First edition. Kress B.135. Goldsmiths 11690. Mattioli 2450. INED 3221. Not in Sraffa. A notable work in the history of population studies, lauded by both Spengler and McCulloch. The first part includes statistical tables, while the second provides an analysis of the various factors likely to influence population levels. 'Of the 18th century French writers on population none was more competent and judicious than M. Moheau. He was a populationist in that he believed the fiscal, military, political, and economic resources and power of the state to be proportionate to its population. .....Moheau admitted that population growth was conditioned by the supply of subsistence, but denied that it was thereby determined. Most of the physical checks to the population growth, and all the political, civil, and moral checks, were independent of the supply of subsistence. In general, he believed that population tended to grow most rapidly where the bulk of the population enjoyed simple comfort, not where men were poverty-stricken, or where they were opulent and addicted to luxury. Specifically, he said that men tended to marry and multiply most, and infant mortality tended to be lowest, where men could easily obtain 'through ownership of the soil or through labor' the 'things necessary to life.' Accordingly, he emphasized, though in a lesser measure than Cantillon, the role of proprietors and employers in respect to population growth.' [Spengler, French predecessors of Malthus> pp.100-101]. 'This when published was certainly the best work that had appeared on the population of any country.' [McCulloch, Literature of political economy,> p.264.

1778 - Fine copy bound in red morocco with the arms of Charles III. [1778]. Madrid. Imprenta de Pedro Marin. In 4to (234 mm x 175 mm). 1 [blank] + 2 ff. + 19 pp. + 262 pp. + 2 [blank]. Contemporary red morocco, gilt arms on boards of Charles III, arms framed in interlacing fillets, raised bands to spine, compartments tooled in gilt, green morocco lettering piece; boards with some scratching and minor rubbing, foot of spine with loss of leather, lettering piece with some loss. Upper margin of first leaves with damp, away from text. First edition. A presentation copy of the Spanish regulations for trade with the Indies; the reform was a Borbonic attempt to usher in economic modernization, for instance by ending the colonial monopoly of Seville and Cadiz, and by removing restrictions between American and Asian ports and Spain. Some other reforms include favorable conditions to the North American region of Louisiana, and changes to the coffee and gold industry. The reforms, however, were still protective of Spanish national production, and proved insufficient to palliate the discontent of the colonies and actually updating the anachronistic system. Copies in large-paper as this, and with a royal binding are uncommon, and were probably issued for presentation to high-government officials.         Travels Through the Interior Parts of North America, in the years 1766, 1767, and 1768. With the Carver map relied on by Benjamin Franklin in Treaty of Paris negotiations of the western boundary of the United States.

Printed for the Author; and sold by J. Walter and S. Crowder,, London: 1778 - The first edition of the detailed journal of Jonathan Carver, of the British exploration of the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi region, which includes the map used by Benjamin Franklin in negotiations with the British for the boundaries of the new United States. Carver explored and documented an area further west than any British explorer had previously traveled and his journal includes the first published use of the word "Oregon".The volume complete with plates and large folding maps, the first titled 'A New Map of North America, From the Latest Discoveries 1778', and the second, taken from Carver's manuscript map, titled 'A Plan of Captain Carver's Travels in the Interior Parts of North America in 1766 and 1767'. This map was relied upon by Benjamin Franklin as a delegate to the Paris negotiations with the British to determine the western boundary of the United States for the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War. The source of the Mississippi was of crucial importance to the Americans in establishing the western boundary of the new United States; Carver's map in this volume shows White Bear Lake as the source of the Mississippi. The Treaty of Paris conceded the trans Appalachian area to the new country; for the British this concession was made with a view to creating a major trading partner. Jonathan Carver (1710 - 1780), British mapmaker and draftsman, was third in command of an expedition to find a Northwest Passage to the Pacific, departing from Boston in 1766, and headed for Fort Michilimackinac in the Great Lakes. Carver was appointed to the expedition by Major Robert Rogers, the newly appointed governor commandant of British Fort Michilimackinac. From there the expedition proceeded to the Minnesota River, where Carver met and befriended the "Naudowessies" (Dakotas), spending the winter and recording their way of life in his journal. Carver eventually returned to the east, and not securing funds to publish his journal, sailed for Britain. In London, Carver ended up self publishing his Travels in 1778, where it became an instant best seller, and where at some point Benjamin Franklin as American ambassador in Paris acquired the copy which contained the map he relied upon in his negotiations with the British.8vo, [20], xvi, 543,[1]pp. 2 folding engraved maps, 4 engraved plates. Manuscript marginalia included through out the volume but unfortunately the name of the author of the comments has been excised from the top of the title page, only visible in the offset and from some bleed through. Included are short vocabularies of Chippeway and Naudowessie language. Modern full calf, raised bands, title piece on spine.

1778 - Rare work on the martyrdom of Dominican Priests in China. 1778. Valencia. Benito Monfort. In 4to (200 mm x 140 mm). 1 [blank] + 2 ff. + engraved frontispiece + 287 + 2 [blank]. Half vellum over boards, lettering pieces to spine, tooled in gilt. Scattered foxing, some damp to title page, else very good. First edition. Early eyewitness account by Francisco Serrano, one of the martyrs, of the martyrdom suffered along with four Priests doing missionary work in China. The work profits from an engraved plate by Mariano Brandi and Josef Camaron, picturing the five Dominican martyrs in prayer (Serrano, Sanz, Alcober, Diaz, and Royo), with Sanz portrayed with a sword through his head. It includes a historical review of the progress of the faith in China, as well as the Rites Controversy, and the Apostolic See´s constitutions forbidding it. The martyrs are Serrano, Sanz, Alcober, Diaz, and Royo; they were all declared Martyrs by Pious VI, in 1777. The attribution to Serrano is somewhat contested, often given as Sanz´. Palau 223830.

Frontisp. von Daniel Chodowiecki, zahlreichen Vignetten und Musiknoten. 12°.

– Goed.       Paris, Fr. Didot, 1778. 8vo. In four nice uniform contemporary sprinckled full calf bindings with five raised bands and richly gilt spines. Hinges with wear, otherwise a fine set. XXXVII, (3), 568 pp.; (4), 208, 207-302,305-655, (1) pp.; (4),520, (1) [errata] pp.; (4),333, (1), 335-336, (1), 336-776 pp. Complete with half titles in volume I-III, not called for in volume IV.. The genuine second edition - but fifth appearance - of Macquer's landmark work "which may be regarded as the first scientific work of its class." (Ferguson I:p.60). "Although designiated as the second edition on each title page, this is the fifth appearance of the Dictionnaire in the French language. It is the genuine second edition as written by Marcquer, whose name now appears on the title and whose reputation had by this greatly increased. An important addition is the 168-page article on gas, a topic that was almost entirely new and had not been mentioned in the first edition. While the number of articles remains almost the same, the work, is nearly twice as long owing to the inclusion of an up-to date account of chemistry and much new material." (Neville, vol. 2, p. 113)."By far the most important of Macquer's works: there had been technical dictionaries before but this was the first dictionary of theoretical and general chemistry; its success soon produced many imitators".         @"Epithomo historico-medico-politico em que se referem as honras, as estimações, e as liberalidades, que todos Principes do Mundo despenarão com os medicos dos seus respectivos tempos . . ." Manuscript on paper, in Portuguese.

, , @Ca. 1778.. 8°, contemporary crushed crimson morocco, heavily gilt with floral motif in center and at the corners of each cover and a roll-tooled border; spine gilt in compartments with a small floral tool; edges gilt and gauffered. Two very small scraped areas on upper cover and a few pinpoint wormholes at head and foot of spine, otherwise very fresh. Written in ink, in a number of different hands (elegant and legible) of the late eighteenth century. Very fine internally. In fine condition. Old (contemporary?) library stamp of the Dukes of Lafões on title-page. (9 ll., first 2 blank), 11-37, 37-479, 1-225 pp., (1 blank l.); i.e., 707 written pages in all. *** One of the most copiously informative histories of medicine ever written, this @unpublished eighteenth-century "epitome" is no mere summary. It gives a critical account of the whole development of medicine, and more particularly of the medical profession, concentrating on the three centuries between the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. Given that medical history on such a grand scale as this had just begun around 1700 with Leclerc, it seems likely that Moraes Soares' manuscript is among the first Portuguese contributions to comprehensive medical historiography - perhaps the first such. Aside from this, the manuscript represents an unpublished eighteenth-century text by a physician of some standing, dedicated to and from the library of one of Portugal's great Enlightenment figures. Manoel de Moraes Soares was born in Coimbra in 1727 and died in 1800 or 1801 in Lisbon, where he was an established scientific rapporteur and litterateur. His Portuguese translation of the fables of Phaedrus (@Fabulas de Phedro) was published in 1785, and popular enough for a second edition to be published in 1805. In the medical sphere, Moraes Soares published only two works. One was a translation of La Condamine's work on smallpox vaccination, issued in 1762 as @Memoria sobre a inoculaçam das bexigas (OCLC 14314743, at Yale University-Medical Library and the National Library of Medicine). In 1760, Moraes Soares published @Memorial critico-medico, historico-physico-mechanico, whose title suggests that its contents are similar to the "Epithome historico-medico-politico." However, the @Memorial is only 84 pp. long (OCLC 7978639, at the National Library of Medicine and the Newberry Library). We estimate that this manuscript was written some two decades later than the @Memorial. The most recent date mentioned in the text is 1771, in connection with the intriguing career of the notorious but progressive J.F. Struensee as a royal minister in Denmark. Several other events from the 1750s and 1760s are recorded, and the maps cited are mid-century ones that were standard in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. The dedication supports a date in the late 1770s. The dedicatee, the second Duke of Lafões (see Provenance), was in self-imposed exile during the long dictatorship of the Marquês de Pombal (1750-1777); this manuscript's dedication surely dates from after his return. From the author's praise in the dedication of the Duke's "sabia errecção de huma Accademia nova," we judge that the work was written just before the Academia Real das Ciências was chartered by D. Maria I in 1779. This theory is supported by the author's omission from the title-page of any mention of the Academy, or of any rank attained by the Duke of Lafões after 1779. The near-encyclopedic "Epithomo" notes the contributions to healing of the monastic orders and credits the Moors with the benefits they brought to science during their Iberian hegemony, giving many particulars of the work of physicians of various faiths under the Caliphate. Though there is also much on individual cures, drugs and doctors, the words "historico-medico-politico" in the title accurately reflect the author's concern for the standing of medical science in different communities. Moraes Soares also treats public health measures and the state of health of the population in general, and tries to indicate the level of education in medical and other sciences. In his highly detailed "Lista Geographica" (the final section of 225 pages), Moraes Soares catalogues the world's educational and medical institutions. Compiled with great thoroughness, it covers all four major continents, specifying even the maps consulted (by Bellin, Deslisle, Buache and d'Anville). He includes hospitals and secondary schools as well as universities with medical or scientific faculties, for which he sets out to give the date of foundation, number of colleges and number of professors. Latin America is prominently represented, with institutions listed in Mexico, Central America, the Spanish Main and Peru. For Brazil, Moraes Soares cites schools in Maranhão, Olinda, Recife, Salvador, Espírito Santo, São Sebastião and São Paulo. In what is now the United States he mentions only the College of William and Mary, misplacing it to Jamestown, Virginia, but lists hospitals in New Orleans and Philadelphia. A hospital is also listed in Montreal. The present work stands out for its full and sympathetic assessment of the medical pioneers of the modern age, such as Fallopio and Malpighi in Italy, William Harvey in England, Reynier de Graaf and Frederik Ruysch in Holland, and royal physicians in France, Germany, Denmark and England. Moraes Soares always refers precisely to each practitioner's specialty or contribution, and marks his place in medical progress surefootedly. He gives a critical yet friendly view, not otherwise attainable, of the state of medicine at the height of the Enlightenment, and gives it largely without nationalist bias. @Provenance: The second Duke of Lafões, D. João Carlos de Bragança Sousa Ligne Tavares Mascarenhas da Silva (1719-1806), was of the closest possible affinity to the royal house: his father was the legitimized son of D. Pedro II. A nobleman of great talent and public spirit, he led the aristocratic opposition to Pombal, living outside Portugal during most of Pombal's reign. In the quarter-century after Pombal's fall he became one of the dominant public figures. He was appointed Counselor of War in 1780, Counselor of State in 1796, and Marshall-General of the Portuguese armies. A man of great culture and scientific appreciation and a witty and generous patron, the Duke assisted both Gluck and Mozart during his absence from Portugal. Immediately upon his return he formed the Academy of Sciences, in order to assure Portugal the benefits of the philosophic enlightenment (whose absence Moraes Soares several times bemoans). *** See Innocêncio VI, 67 and XVI, 273 on the author, and Silvestre Ribeiro, @História dos estabelecimentos científicos volumes II & V.

AN EAST PERSPECTIVE VIEW OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, IN THE PROVINCE OF PENSYLVANIA, IN NORTH AMERICA; TAKEN FROM THE JERSEY SHORE

London: Printed for and sold by Carington Bowles, 1778. Near fine. Matted and framed to 17 1/2 x 23 1/4 inches. Not examined out of the frame. A handsome view of colonial Philadelphia, printed by the mapmaker Carington Bowles in London in 1778, showing the city as it looked in 1752. The Bowles view is based on the earlier drawing made by George Heap (the famous "Scull and Heap" view), though Bowles fails to credit Heap in any way. This was issued as a companion piece to Bowles' view of New York, issued at the same time. Both were of great topical interest because of the Revolution. Snyder writes: "Probably the most decorative of all the reissues of Scull and Heap's 1754 EAST PROSPECT of Philadelphia .... published by Carington Bowles of London during the British occupation of Philadelphia. It is of better quality and a more ambitious as well as larger work than the LONDON MAGAZINE reissue of 1761. Bowles operated a print 'warehouse' in the shadow of St. Paul's Church. His was a sharp eye, for he was able to acquire the original drawing made by George Heap that had been transported to London with such difficulty twenty-five years earlier. He stated in the new print that it was prepared directly from that source - a claim of greater merit than simply copying an earlier engraving." Snyder further notes that all copies of this view appear colored, and that this is the first state, so noted by the date of Jan. 1, 1778 in the caption. The caption includes a key labeling fourteen different places along the shoreline, including the State House, several churches, the court house, the Quaker meeting house, and several individual streets. Christ Church is the highest steeple pictured, almost directly in the center of the image, with the State House to its left and the Presbyterian Church to its right. A handsome, early view of Philadelphia. SNYDER 100, fig. 61, p.120.

Prijs: € 2.250,- (incl. lijst).

Woodcut vignette with publisher's monogram on title page. In very good condition. Old ink inscription on recto of front free endleaf. xxii, 373 pp. Page 366 in its first state, wrongly numbered "356". It sometimes appears in the corrected state. *** Third edition of this eighteenth-century masterpiece of prose and forerunner of the modern novel of ideas. This edition was edited by Silva de Eça's son, who made many changes. It is the first to contain the "Carta sobre a fortuna" (pp. 326-68), which Silva de Eça had left in manuscript.A native of Sao Paulo, Silva de Eça spent most of his adult life in Portugal. This work on the themes of Ecclesiastes is his principal work, and one of the few notable prose works written by a Brazilian in the latter half of the 18th century. In 1920 Solidonio Leite published a facsimile of the first edition (1752), calling the public's attention to the literary significance of this forgotten classic and reestablishing Silva de Eça's reputation as a man of Brazilian letters.Silva de Eça was the brother of Brazil's first female novelist, Teresa Margarida da Silva e Orta, author of @Aventuras de Diofanes (1752). *** Borba de Moraes, I, 240; (rev. ed., 1983) I, 283-4; @Período colonial, p. 127.
