The Psalms of David. Imitated in the Language of the New Testament. And Applied to the Christian State and Worship. [Bound with] Hymns and Spirituall Songs in Three Books

London: J. W. Parsham, 1778. Hand-Painted Vellum; With Full Morocco Box. Near Fine. 2 volumes in one. 12mo (4.75 by 3", 12 by 7 cm),. [4], 240, [20], [4], 216, [26] pp. Above all else, this is a beautifully painted vellum binding in the style of the Edwards of Halifax, a family of bookbinders in the late 18th century who developed a process of producing painting on vellum or parchment. The painting would actually lie under the surface, giving it a greater permanence as well as a subtle glassy aura. On the front of this particular binding is a lady, in late Georgian attire, playing an organ with a cherub at her side and a lute at her feet. The rear board has a tinted illustration of a castle in a park-like setting. The spine is divided into five compartments, four of which have a lyre ornament. Gilt ornamental borders and other detail work add further refinement to the binding. This comes with a brown levant gilt folding case, shaped like book, octavo in size, and with plush interior with resting compartment for book itself, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The joints of the book are partly cracked. The first title page has some light soilage. There is a small tear, partially repaired, on pp 1/2 of the second work. The vellum has light soilage and wear. The box has rubbed front joint and some minor scuffs and rubbing along edges. Notwithstanding these issues, the book remains a highly attractive work of book art.

Manuscript appointment for Georg Forster as Professor of Natural History at the Carolinum College of the University of Kassel

Kassel: 15 December, 1778. Single sheet, 315 x 200 mm., watermarked 'Pro Patria'; with a remnant of wax seal at the left hand margin, a few folds, some browning and little spotting yet good condition overall. A significant original manuscript document relating to the career of Georg Forster, confirming his first major appointment in Germany, to the Collegium Carolinum in Kassel, where he quickly established himself as the leading Pacific expert of his day. A naturalist on the second voyage of James Cook to the Pacific (1772-1785), Forster was still a teenager when they sailed, serving as an assistant to his father Johann. The two Forsters are now chiefly remembered for the controversies on their return; Johann, by most accounts, was not the easiest man to get along with, and was soon embroiled in controversy surrounding the publication of the official account of the voyage. In 1778, struggling for money himself, Georg left England to seek a university posting for his father in Germany; when he left England in October he carried a wealth of material derived from their time in the Pacific, including native artefacts and ethnological drawings, abundant botanical specimens and bundles of manuscript notes. Although his father encountered difficulty in selling Pacific artefacts in London, Georg was able to interest German institutions including the University of Göttingen, where a significant collection of artefacts from the second voyage of Captain Cook remains to this day. Georg certainly made an impression in Germany, and it is not surprising that while seeking employment for his father in the court of Frederick II, Landgraf of Hessen-Kassel, that he was soon offered a position. This original document confirms George Forster's appointment to the post of Professor of Natural History with a salary of 450 talents per year, and is signed by Frederick II. Georg stayed in the post from 1778 to 1784, and here met his future wife Therese Heyne.

20 engraved plates (including one double-page) & several engraved vignettes (including one on the title). 2 p.l., xviii, [2], 460 pp. Large folio, cont. mottled calf (extremities a little worn, occasional minor foxing), triple gilt fillet round sides, green morocco oval with gilt-tooled floral device inlaid in center of both covers, spine richly gilt, green morocco lettering piece on spine. Grenoble: Cuchet, 1778. First edition of one of the most famous and attractive of all geological books in which the author "established once and for all that basalt, a rock important scientifically because of its distinctive characteristics, its widespread occurrence, and the manner of its association with other kinds of rocks, was the product of volcanic action."-D.S.B., IV, p. 548. Faujas compared mineralogically the rocks present in Vivarais and Velay with the ejected material of active volcanoes. "The author's descriptions and illustrations of the extinct volcanoes are excellent, and have scarcely been surpassed in later publications."-Zittel, p. 46. Faujas (1741-1819), professor of geology at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, also travelled to England and Scotland where he made important geological observations. A really nice and attractive copy of the large folio issue (the quarto issue published at the same time is more common). With the 18th-century engraved bookplate of Mr. de Soissan l'ainé of Avignon and, on title, the stamp "Antoine Polier. an:2:". This was probably Antoine Louis Henri Polier (1741-95), who served in India and formed a fine collection of Indian paintings and manuscripts. The former was sold after Polier's death to William Beckford. Without the final four pages containing the list of subscribers. ❧ En Français dans le Texte 169. Hoover 294. .

        Their Royal Highnesses.

Published by John Boydell, Cheapside, London 1778 - A stunning portrait of the Children of George III, by the master engraver Valentine Green. In the history of engraving, no printmaker has achieved such depth and precision as Valentine Green. He is considered the father of the English mezzotint because through his example we can see the pinnacle of mezzotint engraving. During his career, Green produced some of the most beautiful and sought after 18th century mezzotints. At an early age Green apprenticed himself to Robert Hancock of Worcester, where he produced his first published work 'A Survey of the City of Worcester'. In 1765 Green moved to London where his excellent scraping soon earned him a much celebrated reputation. He soon became mezzotint engraver to George III, and a member of the Royal Academy. Throughout his industrious career Green, scratched over 400 plates working from portraits by Benjamin West and Sir Joshua Reynolds. This group portrait of some of George III's younger children (as of 1778) was one of several mezzotints Green made after paintings by Benjamin West and in his capacity as Engraver to the King. The composition is an appealing and economical group of six children, with one boy, presumably William (George and Frederick were portrayed in another print) , is playing with their little dog while his brother and sisters watch. There is a nice mix of childishness and decorum in the implied motion and stillness. Whitman, Valentine Green 70,i/ii; Chaloner Smith, British Mezzotinto Portraits 50, i/ii; Russell, English Mezzotint Portraits, and their States i/ii. Mezzotint. Scratch lettered impression. State i/ii with inscription in open and scratched letters. In good condition apart from three small tears in the bottom margin. Image size: 18 5/8 x 22 3/4 inches.

An Inquiry into the Original State and Formation of the Earth; deduced from Facts and the Laws of Nature. To which is added An Appendix, containing some General Observations on the Strata in Derbyshire

Seven folding engraved plates on four sheets. 8 p.l., ii, [2], 199 pp. Large 4to, cont. sheep (a little foxing), sides ruled in gilt, spine gilt, red leather lettering piece on spine. London: Printed for the Author, 1778. First edition. "In pure science [Whitehurst] is important chiefly as a geological pioneer who did work in Derbyshire that was published in a well-known book...in 1778. He established for the first time the succession of the Carboniferous strata: limestone, Millstone grit (named by him), and coal measures. Whitehurst formulated the general proposition of a worldwide orderly superposition of strata, each with its characteristic lithology and fossils. Although the proposition was somewhat vaguely imagined, he here hit on the most significant of all geological generalizations...He was among the first to recognize the true nature and origin of this great class of rocks, the basalts, and thus to establish the fact of volcanism in past geological times."-D.S.B., XIV, pp. 311-12. Fine crisp copy with the small oval stamp on verso of title of R. Graf von Veltheim. Half-title present. ❧ Ashworth & Bradley, Theories of the Earth 1644-1830 (Linda Hall Library: 1984), 36-"the descriptions are illustrated by some of the finest geological sections of the period." .

Part I of our book preceded the dictionary in Volume I, and was also published separately in 1777. The ODNB describes it as "a long, intellectually ambitious and highly polemical (work). Those who tried to write the history of Eastern peoples without using Eastern sources were particular objects of his disdain. One of those thus attacked, Jacob Bryant, retaliated in An Apology to Richardson, to which Richardson replied in a second edition of his ?Dissertation".         New Discoveries Concerning the World and its Inhabitants

London: J. Johnson, 1778. Octavo, with two folding plates and two folding maps; old quarter pebblegrain cloth and marbled boards, spine and edges rubbed but a very good copy. Early discoveries in the South Seas. First edition of this early compendium of information about Australia, New Zealand and the South Seas. The accounts of Cook's first two voyages are assembled from a variety of sources, including Hawkesworth, Parkinson, Forster and Cook himself. This gives a good overall picture of the voyages, while the material on the second voyage in particular, published during Cook's absence on the third voyage and before any news of his death, is of a good early date. The various discoveries in the South Seas, and especially those of Cook, are put into a context of particular significance for Australia, by comparison with the voyages of Mendana, Quiros, Tasman, Le Maire, Schouten, Dampier, Roggeveen and others. One of the engravings bears more than a passing resemblance to the celebrated Dufour panorama, the printed French wallpaper which illustrates Cook's and others' discoveries; in the plate here, a marvellous composite of people, places and animals discovered in the South Seas, we see a "Kangaroo" and a "Woman of New Holland", as well as "A Canoe of O-Taheitee" which, defying climate, is separated from Endeavour only by 'A Floating Ice-Island, numbers of which were seen towards the Southern Frigid Zone'. The Tahitian Chief Mourner enters at right.

Enchiridion Historiae Naturalis inserviens, quo termini et delineationes ad Avium, Piscium, Insectorum et Plantarum

Halle: Hemmerde and Schwetschke, 1778. Octavo, old stamp on title, minor paper flaw on one leaf; a very good copy in contemporary buff boards, slightly rubbed. Forster on the natural history collections of the second voyage. First edition, written as a result of researches made on Cook's second voyage. Forster's manual on biological classification was based on the new species and genera seen by him and his son Georg during their time as naturalists on the voyage (1772-1775), and provided a tantalising thumbnail for the great work of Pacific natural history Forster had been promising to write for almost two decades. The preface discusses their voyage with Cook in detail, and describes how parts of the work were composed while on board Resolution. It was to accomodate the significant expansion of the natural kingdom, and particularly the problems of description and classification arising from antipodean species, that Forster drew up this manual of classification. Rosove notes that the book had some success on the Continent, being approved in "contemporary French and German scientific circles", and with a French translation appearing two decades later. Indeed, as with many of Forster's works this had a slow-burn: Michael Hoare has argued persuasively that it was only with the 1799 French edition that its impact was properly assessed, not least because that edition was openly addressed to figures like Jussieu and Cuvier (The Tactless Philosopher, p. 220-1).

Bindings tight and firm. A very good set of the rare French edition. This is a translation of the German work Anleitung zu der Bergbaukunst first published in Vienna in 1773. Delius (1728 - 1779) was a German metallurgist and mineralogist born in Saxony who held posts in Vienna in the Mining Department, was appointed inspector of mines in Hungary in 1761 and was also Professor of Mining Engineering and Finance in the famous Mining Academy in Banska Stiavnica (Schemnitz) in the then Kingdom of Hungary. He discovered a new process for the extraction of copper and located a precious opal mine in Hungary. He wrote treatises on the origin of mountains and ore veins, and on the Hungarian opals as well as this work on the science of mine engineering. (Mario Allegri in D.B.I., LXVI, 2007). Gamba, 2606. Lastri, 77. Re, Saggio Biblografia Georgica, 104: "Alle bellezze poetiche unisce i precetti giustissimi ed alcune prescrizioni de' moderni georgici sono in questi canti espressi a meraviglia". Morazzoni, 173: "Grazioso volume". Niccoli, p. 71. Manca a Lapiccirella, Illustrati veneziani e a Gasparrini Leporace, Il libro illustrato nel Settecento a Venezia.
