Dijon: Chez L. N. Frantin, 1777. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. First Edition. Vol 1: [6],viii,394 pages. Vol II: [4], xxviii, 382 pages. Vol III: [4], x, 448, [4] pages. Vol 1 is in a period binding but rough with staining and loose. It also lacks the 2 plates. We have supplied a second copy of Vol 1 with the 2 plates in a later binding as a supplement. Volume II is sound and in a period binding. Vol III has one page (251) which was an end-sheet in the binding process - the margins are lacking, but the text is complete. Volume III is also rebacked in a period style retaining the original boards with portions of the original spine laid down. A hard set to put together, and rarely found complete and matched. 'A famous textbook by Guyton de Morveau and his colleagues, written to accompany the course of chemistry they gave under the auspices of the Academy of Dijon. Guyton planned the course and gave most of the lectures with the assistance of Dr. Maret (1726-1786) on materia medica and Dr Durande (d1794) on the chemistry of vegetable substances. 'The work was hailed throughout Europe as an important milestone and de Morveau became famous almost overnight. The treatise is important and interesting, for we can see that de Morveau already had the main lines fixed in his mind of those ideas which were later to appear in his Nomenclature chimique, which was first published by him in the Journal de Physique (1782), and finally adopted by Lavoisier, Fourcroy and Bethrollet in 1787' (Duveen)' (Neville I, p568).         Specimen Zoologiae Geographicae , Quadrupedum domicilia et migrationis sistens?

Theodor Haak, Leiden 1777 - Quarto, with a large folding map (500 x 695 mm.); a very good unsophisticated copy in simple modern blue paper wrappers, a few marks, the large folding map in a very good impression. Putting kangaroos and dingos on the map. Rare: first edition of the first book to describe the worldwide distribution of mammals, with the information summarized in a large folding world map, one of the first to include Captain Cook's 1770 discoveries on the east coast of Australia. Zimmermann (1743-1815) was a German geographer and zoologist, best known as a teacher and as the patron of the mathematician Gauss. He published a number of monographs on mammals, including several published in the nineteenth century specifically on American animals. This remarkable work is an early and extensive survey of the worldwide geographical distribution of domestic and migratory quadrupeds. He concluded that land-masses were differently distributed in prehistoric times, making this the first in a long line of publications that led to the theory of continental drift; some of his conclusions influenced Charles Darwin and Charles Lyell. Importantly, the details of animal habits in Australia, the South Pacific and New Zealand derive from the great voyages, from Quiros to Cook, making this study an example - along with the various publications of the Forsters on the Cook voyages - of the earliest application of Pacific discoveries to general scientific research. The fine accompanying world map renders the east coast of Australia, and lists the Kangaroo and several species of Australian wild dog. Designed by Zimmermann himself and prepared by the German naturalist August Wilhelm Knoch (1742-1818), this was the first map to show animal distribution (Robinson, Early Thematic Mapping in the History of Cartography).         Teniers's Kitchen. In the Common Parlour at Houghton

John Boydell, London 1777 - A lively scene from the Flemish master of the interior genre picture. Born in Antwerp, David Teniers was the son of David Teniers I. He became a master of the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1632-3 after an apprenticeship to his father, with whom he also collaborated. In 1637 he married Anna, the daughter and heiress of Jan Breughel I. From the outset Teniers the younger was an extremely productive painter, thanks to his good relationship with Antwerp art dealers. During the 1630s he produced small-format religious scenes on commission for Chrysostoom van Immerseel, who supplied the Spanish market. However, it was Teniers's genre pieces that were greatly prized by the Antwerp dealers and made him famous. Teniers quickly became one of Antwerp's pace-setting and most successful painters, which probably accounts for his assumption of functions that carried a degree of social prominence, such as the office of Master of the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament in the St Jacobskerk between 1637 and 1639, and Dean of the Guild of St Luke in 1645. He also received such prestigious commissions as the large group portrait of the Arquebusiers Company (1643). During this same Antwerp period he also executed commissions for Antonine Triest (1576-1657), Bishop of Bruges, one of the most prominent patrons of the arts in the southern Netherlands. By 1647 Teniers was working for Archduke Leopold William, Governor of the southern Netherlands from 1646, and in 1651 he became the Archduke's court painter. He consequently moved from Antwerp to the court at Brussels, and in 1656 he bought a building near the archducal palace and had it rebuilt as a spacious and handsome house-cum-studio.' (artnet, com) "Teniers's Kitchen" is a celebration of abundance, a happiness provoked by the instinctive anticipation of plenty of good food from sea, sky and land. Teniers is also pleased to demonstrate how many people are employed in this important work, and it is probably he who stands in a commanding posture, staff in one hand and falcon in the other surrounded by dogs on the dais to the right. The original painting was completed in 1646 and is in the Hermitage collection. The print was published and commissioned by John Boydell, the great London printmaker and seller. The painting was part of Sir Robert Walpole's collection and was soon thereafter sold to Catherine the Great (1779). Engraving, coloured by hand, by J.B. Michel.         A Voyage round the World, in His Britannic Majesty's Sloop Resolution , commanded by Capt. James Cook, during the years 1772, 3, 4, and 5

London: B. White [etc.], 1777. Two volumes, quarto, with a large folding map; the map slightly spotted and some light spotting at beginning and end of first volume; a very good copy in contemporary diced russia leather, gilt borders to sides, rebacked. First edition of the alternative account of Cook's second voyage, published some six weeks before the official version. Although the Forsters had to rush to complete the work, it is 'an important work and a necessary supplement to the official account' (Davidson). Johann Forster and his son Georg had sailed together on Cook's second voyage after Banks and his associates withdrew. Initially given the task of preparing the official account, the Forsters' fractious relationship with the Admiralty soon became impossible, and Johann Forster was dismissed from taking any part in the official publications. Thus denied, the Forsters set to work to forestall the official version with their own account, taking advantage of the loophole that only Johann had any legal agreement with the Admiralty: the account appeared in Georg's name. The publication was the source of great rancour, which was only enflamed when the astronomer, Wales, roundly accused Georg of being author in name only, the real author being solely his father. This is palpably untrue and, as Georg states in his preface, he did indeed write the account in consultation with his father's journal. Whatever the case, it effectively signalled the end of the Forsters' chances in England, and by mid-1780 both had returned to Germany. The split between Cook and the Forsters has scarcely been repaired even now. Sir Maurice Holmes' comment on the work is arch, and Beaglehole was never keen to promote the role of the Forsters. However, recent work by Michael Hoare and Nigel Erskine has seen the importance of the Forsters' contribution to Cook's voyage reappraised in a more positive light.

Paris: Pissot & Nyon, 1777. Octavo, with a folding engraved map at the end; a fine copy in contemporary French marbled calf, spine gilt, label renewed. First French edition of Marra. The first French edition of the first full account of Cook's second voyage to have been published, translated by De Fréville from the 1775 London printing. This is also the first French account of the Antarctic. It includes an account of the Adventure's time on the Tasmanian coast. Marra's was the first substantial account of the voyage to appear in print, and was published anonymously to circumvent Admiralty regulations against the use of shipboard journals for personal profit by members of the expedition. An audience eager for news of these famous adventures meant that publishers were anxious to bring out narratives as soon as possible after the return of the voyagers, in continental Europe as well as England. Inscribed "malesherbes" with a shelfmark at head of front flyleaf, so probably from the library of Guillaume-Chrétien de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, royalist, politician and botanist, executed in 1793, who has been described as "one of the sweetest characters of the 18th century

Signed by Thomas Townshend's cousin George, as Viscount Townshend. The document is an appointment of attorneys to deal with a civil action brought against Townshend by Thomas Harley for a debt of £1000. George Townshend sailed to Quebec with General James Wolfe in 1759, but relations between the two deteriorated as the campaign against the French drew on. When Wolfe was killed in the final assault, command of the British troops in Quebec devolved upon Townshend who brought the settlement to surrender in September 1759. Back in England, George celebrated a victory tarnished by accusations that he had taken undue credit for Wolfe's strategy. George Townshend had as many enemies as he had friends. He was renowned for his skill in depicting both with political caricature. Horace Walpole noted 'his genius for likenesses in caricature is astonishing', a skill that did little to impress the subjects of his work and won him the disapproval of King George II. He is of interest to the history of Lord Sydney as a strong opponent of his cousin Thomas's politics, a position that he maintained throughout their intertwined official lives.

        The Schindlerin

Published by John Boydell, Cheapside, London 1777 - This charming portrait of the fashionable Catherine Schindlerin expertly illustrates Smith's superior technique and artistic ingenuity. Catherine Schinderlin was a German singer and actress, who began her career in London in 1775, the year Reynolds did this portrait for the Duke and Duchess of Dorset. It shows the actress in the role of the "Coquette" from an as yet unidentified play or opera. A highly influential figure in the late eighteenth-century British art world, John Raphael Smith was the most robust and prolific printmaker of his time. During his prodigious career, Smith produced nearly 400 prints, 130 of which were of his own design. The remainder were reproduced paintings by such noted British artists as Joshua Reynolds, George Romney, and Joseph Wright of Derby. Smith was an incredibly astute businessman and soon became an impresario of the print-publishing trade. At the 1783 exhibition of the Society of Artists, Smith exhibited his print of the Prince of Wales. This clever bit of marketing precipitated his appointment as the Prince of Wales' mezzotint engraver, immediately making him even more desirable to an art market hungry for quality prints. (D'Oench) D'Oench, Copper into Gold, Prints by John Raphael Smith 88; Frankau, An Eighteenth Century Artist and Engraver, John Raphael Smith 306, iii/iii; Chaloner Smith, British Mezzotinto Portraits 147, iii/iii; Russell, English Mezzotint Portraits, and their States 147; O'Donoghue, Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits.in the British Museum 1; Lennox-Boyd & Stogdon, state iii/iii.

Toulon: 9 April, 1777. Folio, 3 pp., manuscript in ink on paper, original folds; in fine condition, preserved in a brown linen solander case, morocco label to front. The French copy Cook on scurvy. A rare and very significant manuscript survival, showing deliberate adoption by the French navy, following careful trials, of the measures pioneered by Cook's work on eradicating scurvy on long voyages of discovery. Cook had fully reported his findings on scurvy, with the result that he was awarded the Copley medal of the Royal Society in absentia in 1776, making this an unusually speedy reaction from the continent, pointing to the urgency felt in the need to conquer the curse of scurvy. It is an original manuscript extract of proceedings at a meeting of the Conseil de Marine in Toulon, signed by the conseil's secretary, Molliere, as a true record of the decisions of the meeting, and shows that of five matters considered, by far the most important was the success of Captain Cook in combating scurvy. A letter from the Minister was read to the meeting inviting them to consider the question, as well as a memoir "sur les moyens employés par M. Cook pour conserver la Santé de l'équipage du Vau. Anglois la Résolution pendant un Voyage autour du monde…" [on the methods employed by M Cook to safeguard the health of his crew during a voyage around the world on HMS Resolution]. Medical reports were given, and in view of the high expense associated with appropriately provisioning a ship, the members of the council were asked to consider the matter at length. The mid-eighteenth century saw a renaissance in French shipwrighting and voyages, not least because a new version of the conseil was inaugurated in 1776. Noted in the manuscript as important to this review are Verguin and Barberet: the first of these is probably Jean-Joseph Verguin (1701-1777), who was based in Toulon and was an influential figure in the rebuilding of the French navy.

De optimo Reipublicae statu , deque nova insula Utopia, libri duo... [and], Moriae Enkomion: Stultitiae laudatio

London and Paris: Barbou, 1777. Duodecimo, with a frontispiece to the first work; contemporary dark green morocco, sides bordered and spine panelled in gilt, all edges gilt; joints chafed and head of spine slightly chipped. The attractive Barbou edition of Utopia, bound with the matching edition of Erasmus' Praise of Folly. The friendship between More and Erasmus (1469-1536) is one of the great scholarly alliances: one of the greatest humanist scholars of sixteenth century Europe, Erasmus was hugely influential in the writing and publishing of More's Utopia. Erasmus' Moriae Enkomion, which he claimed to have written in a week whilst staying at More's London house, was first published in 1511. It is an ironically approving dissection of human society given from the perspective of the goddess 'Stultitia' or Folly. The common translation of the work as 'The Praise of Folly' removes Erasmus' original pun: 'The Praise of More'. Although not strictly an imaginary voyage nor utopia, its use of irony influenced More's elusive style in Utopia.

A Voyage round the World, in His Britannic Majesty's Sloop Resolution , commanded by Capt. James Cook, during the years 1772, 3, 4, and 5

      B. White [etc.], London 1777 - Two volumes, quarto, with a large folding map; the map slightly spotted and some light spotting at beginning and end of first volume; a very good copy in contemporary diced russia leather, gilt borders to sides, rebacked. PP. Bénédictins

, 1777. 1777. A Paris, chez Pierre-Théophile Barois... et a Orléans, chez Jacques-Philippe Jacob... 1777. xlii,402pp. Woodcut head- and tailpieces. Table des auteurs. Later hcalf. Marbled bds. With the exlibri of A.N.L. Munby & H.P.K(raus) on the inside front cover. Second, enlarged edition of this catalogue that was first published in 1721. The gift of the Prousteau library founded the library at Orléans. Guillaume Prousteau was a law professor at the university of Orléans. In 1694 he donated his large collection of books to the city of Orléans, and added an annual amount to buy books and to maintain a librarian. He also paid large amounts for the actual construction of the interior of the library. According to Peignot (Répertoire bibliographique universel, page 120), Prousteau was born on 26 May 1626 in Tours and the gift was made in 1694. He states that Prousteau died in 1715, but Neveux & Dacier (Les Richesses de bibliothèques provenciale, I - Paris, 1982) p. 82 cite Prousteau's birth as 1628 and the date of the gift as April 6, 1714. Pages ix-xxx give an account of the history of the library with a short biography of Guillaume Prousteau in which it says that: tout étaint réglé, il fit, le 6 Avril 1714, la donation entre-vifs de la Bibliothèque, pour l'utilité publique. On page xvii there are some manuscript annotations in a contemporary hand. The account of the library also contains a list of benefactors: le Roi (who donated 89 vols), M. l'Abbé d'Hautefeuille, (who donated about 40 vols.)., René Lejay de Massuere (who donated his whole collection of books), M. Antoine Vaslin des Breaux (the largest benefactor who not only donated his books but also money to build shelving), M. Étienne Arterié, Médicin & M.Robert-Joseph Pothier. And there is a list of all librarians. The catalogue is divided into the following main categories: theology, law, history, arts & sciences & belles-lettres. Interesting catalogue with extensive notes for many entries.

Pissot & Nyon, Paris 1777 - Octavo, with a folding engraved map at the end; a fine copy in contemporary French marbled calf, spine gilt, label renewed. Inscribed "malesherbes" with a shelfmark at head of front flyleaf, so probably from the library of Guillaume-Chrétien de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, royalist, politician and botanist, executed in 1793, who has been described as "one of the sweetest characters of the 18th century" [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

« A special type of Quixote, illustrated with woodcuts was sold in the street; it was published by M. Martín between 1765 and 1782. This was how this most intellectual of Spanish literary text penetrated the popular culture of the period. The men of this expedition became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Further visits were made to New Zealand, and on two great sweeps Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries including Easter Iland, the Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, and a number of smaller islands. Rounding Cape Horn, on the last part of the voayge, Cook discovered and charted South Georgia, after which he called at Cape Town, St. Helena and Ascension, and the Azores. John Reinhold Forster and his son Georg were the official botanists on board. Dr. Anders Sparrman, a Swedish scientist, joined the expedition on the way out at Cape Town. French historian and philosopher. Raynal was a priest, but he was dismissed from his parish in Paris; he then turned to writing and sought the society and collaboration of the philosophes. Two historical works, one on the Netherlands (1747) and one on the English Parliament (1748), established his career. His most important work, completed with the assistance of Denis Diderot, was a six-volume history of the European colonies in the Indies and Americas (1770). It was condemned by the Parlement of Paris (1781) for impiety and its dangerous ideas on the right of the people to revolt and to give or withhold consent to taxation. Nevertheless, the History was extremely popular, going through 30 editions between 1772 and 1789; the radical tone becoming more pronounced in later editions. Placed on the Index of the Roman Catholic Church in 1774, Raynal's book was burned and he was forced into exile in 1781. Allowed to return to France, but not Paris, in 1784; his Parisian banishment was rescinded in 1790. Elected to the States General in 1789, he refused to serve and later advocated a constitutional monarchy. The "philosophic" declamations perhaps constituted its chief interest for the general public, and its significance as a contribution to democratic propaganda. The book examines the East Indies, South America, the West Indies, and North America. The final chapter comprises theory around the future of Europe as a whole. Raynal also examines commerce, religion, slavery, and other popular subjects, all with a perspective of from the French Enlightenment. " - See Wikipedia .

The Province of New Jersey Divided into East and West, commonly called the Jerseys

London 1777 - William Faden (1749-1836) The Province of New Jersey Divided into East and West, commonly called the Jerseys Published, London, 1777 Engraving with original hand color Sheet size: 32 x 23 1/2 inches William Faden's monumental map of New Jersey was based on a survey made by Bernard Ratzer in 1769, for use in the settlement of a 100 year long dispute between New York and New Jersey. Faden's map was the first to show New Jersey's northern border with New York, and also depicts the area known to George Washington prior to the battle of Monmouth, and a fortified Valley Forge. The most important map of the area from the Revolutionary period, it was also the largest map of New Jersey that had ever been produced. Unprecedented in its detail and precision, Faden's map remained the standard geographic representation of the state until well into the 1800s. Faden's attention to the esthetic appeal of his map is also apparent. The fine beauty of engraving is emphasized by the cartouche in the upper-left corner, where a farmhouse can be seen between two graceful trees, and also by the ranges of hills delicately shaded as if illuminated from the northwest. Partner of Thomas Jefferys, London's leading mid-18th century engraver, William Faden assumed sole control of the business after his colleague's death and continued Jefferys's tradition of producing the finest quality engraved maps and atlases. Faden's fine engravings, in fact, made him one of the greatest cartographers of the 18th century. Faden's talent for mapmaking was such that he was named official geographer to the king in 1775, two years before he produced this map, a landmark in the cartography of New Jersey. The Province of New Jersey was included in Faden's North American Atlas, a large folio work that is the most rare and important cartographic record of the early years of the American Revolution. All of the maps contained in the atlas possessed a wealth of topographical detail based on information obtained by first-hand observation, a factor that makes them historical documents of great importance. Faden's map was much consulted during the Revolution, and represents the best state of knowledge regarding New Jersey in the 18th century.
