Anatomisch-Chirurgische Abhandlung über die Hermaphroditen. Aus dem Französischen übersetzt

Straßburg, König 1777.. Mit 6 gefalt. Kupfertafeln. 2 Bll., 116 S. HLdr d. Zt. mit Rückenschild und etwas Rückenverg. 4°. Erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Hirsch-H. I, 205; Wellcome II, 58 (nur engl. Übers.); Libr. of the Karolinska Inst. 128f.: "Arnaud de Ronsil, a French surgeon of good reputation, is especially known for his operations of hernia. Already in 1750 he published a dissertation of hermaphrodites of 58 pages. The above work is considerably enlarged with an account of the defence of Anne Grandjean, also known by the name of Johann Baptist Grandjean, a case regarding a hermaphrodite which was discussed not only in Paris but all over Europe. This German edition was translated from the first volume of the author`s memoires de chirurgie. And is illustrated with 12 figures on six folding plates. Even if fanciful illustrations of hermaphrodites had occured several times in books and prints, the figures in Arnaud`s work and the two copperplates by Moreau le Jeune seem to be the earliest depictions in printed form of this phenomena drawn d`après nature." - Etwas berieben.         Oeuvres

Mention new edition, considerably increased. Indeed, it has been added to this multi-volume edition, in addition to the figures. llustrée a portrait by Monet frontispiece of Volume I and Figures 4 Meon. Volumes II: 4 figures Meon. Volume III: 10 figures by Monnet. Beautiful illustration, neat and fine. Edition remarkably executed. Full Calf icy blond period. Back tooled raised. Part of title morocco garnet and volume number in red leather (with wheels). Roulette and tail cap. Triple Net framework on food. Upper jaw fragile tail of Volume I; This volume also includes a small scratch with tail missing. A lack of a cm ahead of Volume IV. Volume III of the lower jaw split tail (three wormholes along the jaw). A snag with the lack headbox of Volume VI. Hat Volume VII fragile head. A corner waned Volume VII. Despite these shortcomings, nice set to desirable appearance. Although it can not truthfully be described as important literary production Palissot, it was undoubtedly a major figure in the literary life of his time; and the various parts, notes, comments, letters that frame every comedy (the editing is very rich from this point of view) are remarkable for the literary life of the second half of XVIII, including with regard to the famous quarrel philosophers whose Palissot was originally attacking outrageously in his eponymous play (probably poorly designed to dramaturgical point of view, but excellent in his writing, each making mockery fly). Besides theater and poem The Dunciad, the volumes contain literary memoirs (dictionary of characters letters), correspondence with Voltaire (he was protected in his early career), critics of his contemporaries (Freron, Piron Duclos ...). We identify for tastefully criticism from his contemporaries on his own pieces. Palissot was probably an upstart, with incredible for controversy and ridicule talent, and as much for flattery; this edition of his work retains the greatest interest in the world of letters of the second half of the eighteenth.

New and improved and enlarged edition (original part), illustrated with a frontispiece, 12 figures unsigned and six vignettes title (title pages are fully engraved). Nice print. The original 1770 edition was only 3 in 12 Volumes Full Calf tortoiseshell period. Smooth back adorned with jewels and multiple wheels. Triple Net framework on food. Slices cailloutées blue. Light scuffs on the dishes. Some wormholes to bites and worm work in the margins of Volume I of the first 20 sheets. Despite these minor defects, fine copy, with excellent and fresh. Protean book devoted to the study of man, deftly mixing and an always pleasant reading stories, dialogues and plays (there is even quoted in full letters from 'Persian Letter'), the history; the book has an encyclopedic ulterior purpose on the nature of man. If the first volume is devoted strictly speaking the philosophy of nature in history, the following volumes away quickly in order to devote himself entirely to the study of man (morality, religion, politics). Volume IV of particular interest is given, its purpose being the study of monsters of nature (man of the woods, fish man, eunuchs ...) bibliographical sources are valuable. These are the last two volumes studying the relationship of man to the religion which immediately sent the book condemned to fire and banish her in perpetuity with confiscation of property. The latter not only the Christian religion alone, but most then known cults of those Veterans and current ones. At the end of the work, a very severe political reflection on religion. It was called the author of "monkey Diderot." In that it uses the same forms to achieve his goal, no doubt, but this is a lot common among philosophers of the eighteenth. The work is highly original, multiple, and if it is open to criticism, it is in its own qualities. 'From the philosophy of nature is to rediscover and rehabilitate. S.n.

Four parts in four. 8vo. lxiv, [42], 2,155 pp. and 57 mostly folded engraved plates. Original half calf over speckled boards. morocco label with gilt title on the spines.l Rare first and only German edition and the main work on mineralogy and palaeontology by Linnaeus. Linné attached great importance to crystal structure for classification and thus was one of the pioneers in crystallographie. More important were his contributions to palaontology and historial geology: he described many fossils, including trilobites (Entomolithus), which he correctly placed among the arthropods... (DSB). Hoover Collection 542: 'Linnaeus achieved worldwide influence mainly through his pioneer work in systemizing botany but he also applied his passion for the arrangement to the animal and mineral kingdoms. In these mineral studies he describes many fossils and expounds his views on the age of the world, being careful not to upset the ecclesiastical orthodoxy of his time'.. Pictorial bookplate of Birger Strandell and small inoffensive handstamp of former owner on title pages. The Strandell provenance is quite interesting: The Hunt Library of Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh, PA holds the Dr. Birger Strandell Collection which includes all published works by Linnaeus, in almost every known edition and translation as well as many of those by his many students, and much of the world's literature about Linnaeus and his students. This is the largest assemblage of such materials outside Uppsala, Sweden, and it includes approximately 3,000 volumes. The Institute acquired this collection in 1968 from Strandell, who was a Stockholm physician and direct descendant of Linnaeus. Apparently for some unknown reason this set was left out or perhaps it was sold before 1968. Bindings with slightly worn to head and tail. The interior is remarkably clean and overall it is a very good copy. DSB 8, p. 379; Soulsby, 100. Not in Ward and Carozzi.(Postage on this item might be more than indicated, please inquire)

A Voyage round the World in His Britannic Majesty's Sloop Resolution, commanded by Capt. James Cook during the years 1772, 3, 4, and 5

London: B. White, 1777. Two volumes, quarto, with the large folding map; some spotting; contemporary mottled calf, banded and gilt spines neatly repaired; a little scuffed and rubbed at the hinges, but a good copy. The important alternative account. First edition of the most important alternative account of Cook's second voyage: 'an important and necessary addition to Cook's voyages' (Hill).Johann Forster and his son Georg were taken on board the Resolution following the withdrawal of Sir Joseph Banks and his party from the second voyage; it was intended that Johann Forster would write the official record, but he and his son returned to controversy, culminating in them being asked to withdraw from any involvement with the official account. Thus denied, 'the Forsters set to work to forestall it with an account of their own, and succeeded in doing so by about six weeks' (Holmes).Johann was one of the pre-eminent scientists and natural historians of his generation, while Georg, not even eighteen years old when he joined the Resolution, proved to have a facile pen and an alert and inquiring disposition. Yet, what should have been their crowning achievement became, instead, evidence of the rift between them and the British establishment, especially once the accusation that George was the author in name only surfaced, chiefly as a result of the printed attacks by the voyage's astronomer, William Wales. It certainly appears that Johann's disposition was not calculated to please and, as Holmes points out, relations cannot have been improved by the fact that 'no acknowledgement is made of the assistance derived from Cook's journal, the proof-sheets of which had in accordance with the agreement signed at the Admiralty on April 13th, 1776, been placed at the elder Forster's disposal'.Sadly, the controversy has overshadowed the work itself which is, in effect, one of the most considered of all of the secondary accounts of Cook, and, along with Johann's Observations (1778), forms a distinct yet vital contribution to the history and accomplishments of Cook's arduous second voyage.

Lengthy Unsigned Manuscript by the Signer

1777. unbound. 2 pages (front and back) completely in George Read's hand, 9.25 x 7.75 inches, no place, May, 1777. Titled "State of Joseph Vance's Case," this legal draft outlines the transfer of property between several prominent Delaware families. The case appears to be very problematic as it concerns guardianships for minors, joint-owned parcels of land, and disagreements on what mode of payment will be acceptable to the estate. It is likely that the participants in this case did not hold firmly to the "Revolutionary Cause" or perhaps, in the ability of the Continental Army in defeating Great Britain. Read has written on page two (in the second to last line from): "Benjamin Lakerman - paid. Took Negroes to avoid being paid in Continental money." Much more interesting content. Horizontal folds; very good(+) condition. American lawyer, politician, and member of the Continental Congress. He signed the Declaration of Independence as a representative from the state of Delaware.

Londres, M.Elmesly / Paris, De Bure, 1777.

Prima edizione. Testo francese. Cm.20x11,6. Pg.(4),348. Legatura coeva in piena pelle. Edwin Burrows Smith, uno dei rari biografi di Bailly, suggerisce che come "scientist and illuminist, conservative and revolutionist, he combines the contradictory forces of his generation". Venne ghigliottinato l'11 novembre 1793.

A Voyage towards the South Pole, and Round the World, Performed in His Majesty's Ships the Resolution and Adventure, in the years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775. Written by James Cook, Commander of the Resolution. In which is included, Captain Furneaux's Narrative of his proceedings in the Adventure during the separation of the ships

London: Strahan and Cadell, 1777. Two volumes, quarto, with frontispiece portrait and 63 engraved charts, portraits and plates; an excellent copy in contemporary russia, ornately decorated in blind and gilt, spines expertly renewed by Aquarius in period style. Second voyage to the Southern oceans. Second edition: the official account of Cook's great second voyage, prepared for publication by the navigator himself, dissatisfied with Hawkesworth's treatment of the first voyage. The superb engravings, here in fine black impressions, are mostly the work of Hodges whose recording of the voyage resulted also in a superb series of oil-paintings.This was historically the most important of Cook's three voyages. For the first time the Antarctic circle was crossed when, at the beginning of the voyage, Cook cruised as far south as possible, round the edge of the Antarctic ice. His belief in the existence of a land-mass in the southern ice ring was eventually proved by the nineteenth-century explorers. In the Pacific, he visited New Zealand again, and either discovered or revisited many of the islands, including New Caledonia, Palmerston and Norfolk Islands, Easter Island, the Marquesas, New Hebrides, Tonga, the South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia.

Virtue in humble life: containing reflections on relative duties, particularly those of masters and servants ... Various anecdotes of the living and the dead: in two hundred and nine conversations, between a father and his daughter, amidst rural scenes ... with a manual of devotion

London: Printed for Dodsley, in Pall-Mall; Sewel, near the Royal-Exchange; and Bew, in Pater-noster-Row 4to (28.4 cm, 11.2"). 2 vols. in 1. I: Frontis., [2] ff., xvii, [1], vii, [1], 323, [1] p., [2] ff., pp. 325 (i.e., 327)–411, [1] p. II: Frontis., vii, [1], 523, [1] p.. 1777 This is the second edition of => father-daughter dialogues intended to strengthen => servants' morals by myriad examples and advice; it was first published as an octavo series in 1774, using much the same content as Hanway's earlier Farmer's Advice to his Daughter (1770). The author (1712–86) was a merchant and philanthropist known not only for his charity, but also for regularly sporting both a sword and an umbrella at a time when neither was fashionable, and for tipping attractive female servants especially well. (He was a prolific author, too.) Chapters include conversations between daughter Mary and her father on the utmost importance of prayer, sacraments, and charity; the "reciprocal duties of masters and servants"; the "necessity of subordination"; and "caution to female domestics against dancing-meetings," among many, many other topics large and small. The text is handsomely printed double-column in roman and italic, with => two finely engraved frontispieces signed by E. Edwards and J. Hall, one at the beginning of each volume: the first of a father and daughter sitting beneath a tree; the second of Hanway seated on a rock, contemplating a book and skull beneath the motto "Never Despair" — the author's own, which he adopted after a particularly grueling merchant voyage for the Russia Company in 1743. Each volume also has its own title-page, the Manual of Devotion, Consisting of Prayers, Psalms, Hymns, and Lessons that appears between the two having its own as well. Contemporary speckled calf, boards framed in a gilt Greek key pattern, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers; recently rebacked, spine gilt extra preserving original gilt-tooled green morocco label and adding a new red one gilt with author and title. Boards stained and scratched in a few places, corners bumped, chipping leather glued down; marbled endpapers repaired with photocopy segments of the original design. Ex-library: stamps on bottom edge, front endpaper, and rear pastedown (only). Mild to moderate foxing on a handful of leaves in each volume, and one small circular stain affecting eight or so pages in first, while pages mostly clean and bright; short closed tear to bottom margin of one leaf in second volume. => Nice.

Anton de Haen (1704-1776), born n Den Haag, studied with Boerhaave and made his medical career in Austria where he eventually became the personal physician of empress Maria Theresia. His "De magia", fist published in 1775 and reprinted several times, like his "De mircaculis" was severely attacked by contemporaries as it appeared that de Haen defended supersticious belief in magic and supernatural phenomena whereas he claimed to try for a scientific approach towards the occult. - II. The Life of David Hume, Esq. Written by Himself

London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell,/for J. Bew,, 1777. (Together with: PRATT, Samuel Jackson.) Supplement to the Life of David Hume, Esq. Containing genuine Anecdotes, and a circumstantial Account of his Death and Funeral. To which is added, a certified Copy of his last Will and Testament. 2 works bound in one volume, octavo (155 × 95 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine decorated gilt in compartments, red morocco label, edges stained red. Engraved frontispiece portrait to the first work. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Sanderson to front pastedown. Front joint split, but cords holding firm. Title page of the first work browned and offset from portrait as often. Very good copies. First edition, second issue (with the misprint "himself" for "myself", line 3, p. 29), of the most endearing of autobiographies, bound with a related contemporary work. Hume was aware that, owing to his views on religious questions, the manner of his death would be a matter of public curiosity. So when, in My Own Life, he set out to describe his feelings as he approached his end, he was as much writing a manifesto for his philosophy as a piece of autobiography. It is generally agreed that the account is an authentic self-portrait of one whom his friend Adam Smith, whose letter to the publisher William Strahan recounting Hume's last days is printed at the end of the Life, described as approaching "as nearly to the idea of a perfectly wise and virtuous man, as perhaps the nature of human fraility will admit". Smith also contributed the preface (cf. Strahan's letter to John Home of 3 March 1777, in G. Birkbeck Hill, Letters of David Hume to William Strahan, 1888, p. 362, n. 1). Samuel Pratt, a one-time priest and failed actor, depended largely, as of 1774, upon his pen for support. Often writing under the name of Courtney Melmoth, he "possessed considerable talents, but his necessities left him little time for reflection or revision" (DNB). This would seem to be true of his Supplement to the Life, written in the same year as his Apology for the Life and writings of David Hume, which in places seems to aim at a condemnation of Hume but ends emphasising his importance and talent. The anecdotal elements are valuable in giving an insight into the public concern for and interest in Hume's atheism and whether or not this would lead to the condemnation of his soul: "It is hardly to be credited, that the grave-diggers, digging with pick axes Mr. Hume's grave, should have attracted the gaping curiosity of the multitude. That, notwithstanding a heavy rain, which fell during the internment, multitudes of all ranks gazed at the funeral procession, as if they had expected the hearse to have been consumed in livid flames, or encircled with a ray of glory …"

The work is particularly noted for its treatment on fruit trees and on the raising of pineapples. Henrey II 468; cf. Johnston 530; ESTC N21654.

A Voyage Round The World, In His Britannic Majesty’s Sloop, Resolution, commanded by Capt. James Cook, during the Years 1772, 3, 4, and 5

London: B.White, J.Robson, P.Elmsly, and G.Robinson, 1777 Folding engraved map, some music notations in text. Modern calf binding with morocco spine labels, new endpapers. Interior, text and map in superb condition . small clean tear on leaf with errata repaired no loss. First edition of a remarkable achievement, ?"an important and necessary addition?" (Hill) to the account of Cook?'s second voyage. The second voyage was ?"to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents.?" Cook was the first to cross the Antarctic Circle, and on his return to the area near New Zealand an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries were made, including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, and a number of smaller Islands. This voyage produced a vast amount of information concerning the Pacific peoples and islands, proved the value of the chronometer as an aid in finding longitude, and improved techniques for preventing scurvy. The author chronicles each location, describing the physical attributes as well as the inhabitants they met along the way. Georg Forster (1754-1794), along with his father Johann Reinhold Forster, accompanied Cook on the Resolution as naturalists, with the intention of preparing the official account of the voyage. George was not yet 18 when he boarded the Resolution, and over the next three years was active in making collections and observations to both natural history and ethnology. He mad hundreds of paintings and drawings during the voyage. However, a dispute arose with the Admiralty over payments which resulted in the elder Forster being dismissed from the project. At that point George took on the responsibility of authoring an account of the voyage on his father?'s behalf. This work, in the son?'s name only, was published six weeks before Cook?'s own final official account. The competing publications only served to increase the rancorous relationship between Cook and the Forsters, which took on majestic proportions, feeding a continuous slew of books and articles over the ensuing centuries. George was subsequently elected to the Royal Society when he was just 22 years old.

(ex-libris imprimé A.B.L. ELISA BACIOCCHI. Litografia originale di Jean Baptiste Belliard, impressa da Delpech.

      - Bella litografia, in formato cm.49x30,5, raffigurante la principessa a mezzo busto. Marginali fioriture. 100 gr.
