The Declaration of Independence Gentleman?s Magazine August 1776

London: Printed for D. Henry. Very Good. (September) 1776. Hardcover. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 8 3/8? x 5 1/8?. Disbound. Pp. [337-339] 340-387 [388]. Very good plus: leaves clean and bright with just a hint of foxing, tiny spot of repaired loss to upper corner of first leaf. Housed in a custom full calf folder with morocco label, gilt. Folder a bit bowed. The most important issue of this British magazine, containing an early British printing of The Declaration of Independence which is also one of the earliest magazine printings. News of the Declaration reached London by sea the second week of August, and the story broke with a short note of the August 10th issue of The London Gazette. The full text first appeared in England in two different newspapers on August 16th. This issue of Gentleman?s Magazine was likely printed the first or second day of September, as there is mention of an event that occurred August 31st. The Declaration is printed on pages 361 and 362 and is broadcast to its readers with little fanfare; no introduction or commentary, just ?Declaration of American Independency? signed in type by both John Hancock and Charles Thompson. The Revolution is discussed elsewhere in the magazine with a member of Parliament commenting, ?the Colonies, as if animated with one soul, are determined to perish or be free. ? Several pages are devoted to an article entitled Proceedings of the American Colonists which makes brief mention of the Declaration??the ball is now struck, and time only can shew where it will rest. ? A lovely copy of a special magazine, containing an early printing of one of the most important documents in the history of man.         An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

London: for W. Strahan and T. Cadell,, 1776. In two Volumes. 2 volumes, quarto (283 × 225mm). Early 20th century calf spines and marbled boards, spines ruled and stamped gilt in compartments, red leather labels. Head of spine to volume 2 chipped, inner hinges split but joints very firm, corners slightly bumped. Without the half-title to volume two and final blank in volume one. Marginal pale semi-circular oil stain (presumably from a lamp) to the first 40 pages in volume two, dimishing from 6cm to 1 cm. A few leaves in volume two bound in unevenly with slightly shorter fore-margins. Leaf P2 verso (page 107) in volume two lightly inked, affecting fourteen lines. Occasional light spotting as usual and the odd stain. A very good set. First edition of "the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM). In his Wealth of Nations, Smith "begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange ? The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development, a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system, and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control" (PMM). "The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry" (ODNB).

Carte Nouvelle de L'Amerique Angloise contenant tout ce que les Anglois possedent sur le Continent de L'Amerique Septentrionale savoir le Canada, la Nouvelle Ecosse ou Acadie, les treize Provinces unies . avec la Floride .

Augsburg 1776 - Copper engraved map, period hand-colouring. Lotter's attractive map of the British Colonies at the start of the Revoloutionary War, here with beautiful contemporary hand colouring Each of the thirteen Colonies is identified by name both on the map, and in the title. The title is placed within an attractive decorative border surmounted by the British Royal arms. The French title and nomenclature indicates that Lotter, a leading German mapmaker, intended this for the French market, as does the fact that he limits the claims of the British to the regions east of the Appalachian Mountains. The delineation of the thirteen "Provinces unies" is generally well done (although Maryland and Georgia are both strangely shaped): a number of locations are named in the Ohio Valley, including Logs Town, Twictwees, Ft. Du Quesne, Allegheny, Vinango, Buffaloons, Sandoski and Mingos. Some interesting details are also shown in the region of the Great Lakes. McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps 776.19; cf. Blankets also must be procured in the same manner. Their billets will be paid in Albany, as is done to the other troops from this colony. I understand there is no money in the treasury.

[5] ff., 155, [1] pp., fold. plt.. 1776 From January 1748 until his death in early July 1765 Manuel Rubio y Salinas served as archbishop of Mexico City, a period that coincided nicely with the rebirth of the Mexican mining industry and the creation of great wealth, new secular and ecclesiastical establishments, and a building boom in the viceregal capital. Rubio and the Church benefitted from the new wealth in significant material ways, but social justice concerns and religious duties were always high on the bishop's list of things requiring his attention, as demonstrated for example in => his leadership in securing the 1754 papal declaration making Our Lady of Guadalupe the patron saint of New Spain. When Rubio died, the entire viceregal capital turned its energy to commemorating him, much of which is summarized in this volume. It includes a Spanish-language account of the archbishop's last days, his death, and burial (pp. 1–87), followed by Pedro Jose Rodriquez de Arizpe's Latin-language funeral oration ("Maximum occidentis sidus. Ilmus, nempe d. doct. Emmanuel Josephus Rubio, et Salinas . . . In cujus solemni funere quinto idus octobris ann. MDCCLXV, declamabat p. doct. Petrus Josephus Rodriguez, et Arizpe," pp. 87–112), and ending with Cayetano Antonio de Torres's Spanish-language funeral sermon (pp. 115–51). The Spanish-language account of the burial includes a detailed description of the funeral monument (i.e., cenotaph) that the city erected for the archbishop, including the inscriptions and epigrams that were by F.J. Alegre. Following the last page of the text, there is => a large folding engraved plate by Manuel Villavicencio after the design of the monument by Miguel Cabrera, "pintor americano." The engraving is detailed, exquisite, and includes a measure of scale. => A good source for the study of Mexican colonial architecture, commemorative ceremonies, and treatment of and thinking about death. Contemporary vellum with remnants of ties; spine damaged with loss to hungry rodents not affecting paper. One short tear in margin of folding plate, well away from image. => A very clean, very good copy.

Furthermore, they had free access to Banks and Solander collections made on Cook's first voyage (1768-71) to the Pacific, and to Solander's manuscripts' (Henrey II, p. 167).       London:: Printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand,. [1776]. [6], 128 pp, lacking the half title. Pages 32-48 are moderately spotted, mostly in the margins; otherwise a clean text. Later marbled wrappers bound into later half morocco and brown pebbled cloth [lightly rubbed, bookplate removed from front pastedown]. Good+. [offered with] ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE NATURE AND VALUE OF CIVIL LIBERTY, AND THE WAR WITH AMERICA: ALSO, OBSERVATIONS ON SCHEMES FOR RAISING MONEY BY PUBLIC LOANS; AN HISTORICAL DEDUCTION AND ANALYSIS OF THE NATIONAL DEBT; AND A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE DEBTS AND RESOURCES OF FRANCE. London: Printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand. 1777. xvi, 176 pp. Light spotting and toning to the title leaf. Bound a bit clumsily, with title leaf loosening, in modern two-toned cloth. Lacking the free endpapers. Good+. The first edition of each of these highly influential works. Of the 'Observations,' Church writes, "The encouragement derived from this book had no inconsiderable share in determining the American colonists to declare their independence." It "ranks next to Paine's Common Sense as the most often reprinted work of its time. It is said to have had considerable influence on the drafting of the Declaration of Independence" [Decker]. Advocating eloquently the Natural Rights theory of Liberty, Price warns, "There is nothing that requires more to be watched than power. There is nothing that ought to be opposed with a more determined resolution than its encroachment." In the separately-issued 'Additional Observations,' a "continuation" [Adams] of the 'Observations,' Price adheres to his embrace of Natural Rights and its axiom that government requires the "dominion of EQUAL LAWS, made with COMMON CONSENT and not... of ANY MEN OVER OTHER MEN." Of the War against America, "I cannot expect any other than a tragical and deplorable issue to this contest." The War "must shock the feelings and the reason of every considerate person; a war in which rivers of blood must be shed, not to repel the attacks of enemies, or to maintain the authority of government within the realm, but to maintain sovereignty and dominion in another world." From this perspective, he answers authoritatively each British argument favoring the War. Price also absolves the Colonists of responsibility for African Slavery. "It is not the fault of the Colonies that they have among them so many of those unhappy people. They have made laws to prohibit the importation of them; but these laws have always had a negative put upon them here because of their tendency to hurt our Negro trade." FIRST EDITIONS. Observations: Howes P586. Adams, American Independence 224a. Adams, American Controversy 76-118a. Church 1137 [Fifth Edition]. 31 Decker 21 [later London edition].         AN ORATION DELIVERED AT THE STATE HOUSE, IN PHILADELPHIA, TO A VERY NUMEROUS AUDIENCE, ON THURSDAY THE 1st OF AUGUST 1776; BY SAMUEL ADAMS, MEMBER OF THE **** ********** THE GENERAL CONGRESS OF THE ****** ****** OF AMERICA.

[London] Philadelphia, Printed. London, Re-printed:: For E. Johnson,. 1776. [2], 42 pp, as issued. Title leaf dusted, else Very Good in early quarter morocco and marbled boards. "Although this was published over Samuel Adams's name, there is no indication that he wrote it, or that there was a Philadelphia edition. It extols the merits of the newly independent colonies, but overtones suggest that it was actually written in England" [Adams]. Howes calls it "a London forgery designed to show that the colonies were bent on independence." Adams notes that excerpts from the pamphlet first appeared in the London Chronicle in mid-October 1776. A Dublin edition followed in the same year. The Revolutionary rhetoric certainly is genuinely Adams-like. "Our Fore-Fathers threw off the Yoke of Popery in Religion; for you is reserved the honor of leveling the popery of Politicks...The homage that is paid in some Countries to Monarchs and their favourites is disgraceful to humanity...In the judgment of Heaven there is no other superiority among men, than a superiority in Wisdom and Virtue." FIRST EDITION. Howes A72. Adams, American Controversy 76-106a. Sabin 344.
