(Higgs, 6196. INED, 3201. Goldsmiths'-Kress, ‘Online catalogue’, n°11229.Tchemerzine-Scheler, IV, 756). Petits accrocs aux coiffes. Infirme déchirure sans perte aux 3 prem. feuillets. Bel exemplaire, très bien relié à l'époque. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in full leather with gilt decoration and lettering to spine and gilt ruled edges with ribbon markers. First published in 1770 (Amsterdam).Guillaume Thomas Raynal was a French writer and man of letters during the Age of Enlightenment. In his Histoire philosophique des deux Indes, he had the assistance of various members of the philosophe côteries. Diderot is credited with a third of this work. The other chief collaborators were Pechméja, Baron d'Holbach, Paulze, Abbé Martin, and Alexandre Deleyre. The "philosophic" declamations perhaps constituted its chief interest for the general public, and its significance as a contribution to democratic propaganda. The Histoire went through many editions, being revised and augmented from time to time by Raynal; it was translated into the principal European languages, and appeared in various abridgments. Its introduction into France was forbidden in 1779; the book was burned by the public executioner, and an order was given for the arrest of the author, whose name had not appeared in the first edition. The book examines the East Indies, South America, the West Indies, and North America. The final chapter comprises theory around the future of Europe as a whole. Raynal also examines commerce, religion, slavery, and other popular subjects, all with a perspective from the French Enlightenment. Additional versions of the book included maps of the discussed regions.William Bolts was a Dutch-born eighteenth-century merchant active in India. He began his career as an employee of the British East India Company, and subsequently became an independent merchant. He is best known today for his 1772 book, Considerations on India Affairs, which detailed the exploitation and despoliation of Bengal by the East India Company which began shortly after the Battle of Plassey in 1757. The observations and experiences he recorded offer a unique resource for scholars inquiring into the nature of early British rule in Bengal. Throughout his life, Bolts continued to propose and execute various trading ventures on his own behalf and in conjunction with various commercial and governmental partners. The ventures of individual traders like Bolts did much to spur governments and large corporations into the expansion of their own interests and empires.Condition:Corners bumped, corners gently bumped lacks the map for volume eight, Bolt's work else a very good set.

[AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT, SIGNED BY OLIVER ELLSWORTH AND THOMAS SEYMOUR, AUTHORIZING PAYMENT TO THE FAIRFIELD MILITIA DURING THE FIRST MONTHS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION]

Hartford, 1775. [1]p., measuring 6 x 8 inches, ten lines of text; docketed on verso. Old fold lines. Minor soiling Near fine. Key manuscript document, written and signed by Oliver Ellsworth, revealing the interaction between the colonies during the earliest stages of the American Revolution, and the financial interchanges that fueled the rebellion. Ellsworth served in several Connecticut government positions during the Revolution, including as a delegate to the Continental Congress. He was one of the five- member committee that drafted the Constitution at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, playing an important role in the drafting of the Connecticut Compromise, which gave equal representation to large and small states in the Senate; Ellsworth left the Convention, however, before the final draft was completed and is not counted among the Signers. He subsequently served as a U.S. Senator (1789-96) and as the third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Following the alarm raised by the battles at Lexington and Concord in April 1775, militiamen from across the colonies gathered at Boston - this body would become the Continental Army, and the Revolutionary War had begun. In this document, Ellsworth and Thomas Seymour authorize Connecticut Treasurer Jonathan Lawrence to "Pay the Select Men of Fairfield Five pounds Five Shilling & nine pence in Bills - in part the Expence of the Inhabitants of sd. Town who marched towards Boston & to N. York in Alarm last Spring - & Necessaries supplied the Rifle Battalion marching thru this colony to camp at Cambridge...." Signed by Ellsworth and Seymour on the recto, and by Thaddeus Burr, acknowledging receipt of the funds, on the verso, along with docketing. A wonderful piece, in lovely condition, from the opening months of the Revolution.

Brooks, 203 ; Tchemerzine, II, 481. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Catharina Helena Stöber or Stöberin

1775. Etching with engraved text on laid paper; 230 x 166 mm (9 c x 6 ˝ inches) Schuster 374. This is a souvenir portrait of Catharina Helena , a little person who was only two foot four inches (ca. 70 cm) in height. She is shown posing jauntily on a tabletop wearing a dress with a low neckline, and an open overskirt with lace and ribbons, and a decorative hat. Catharina Helena Stöber was exhibited in fairs all over Germany. She toured from her teens well into middle age with her father Johann who managed the exhibition. Her exhibition is said to have been very popular and to have made a great deal of money. (Katritzky p.119 quoting Rudin, Lebenselixier, 72, 77, 137.164). Stöber was known for her perfect proportions and for her elegant dress (as pictured here). There are at least three other images of her held at the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbütel, one of them by Nilson (a variation of our picturing the subject without her hat), all of them extremely rare. The Artist Johann Esaias Nilson was an important portrait artist, miniaturist and engraver and editor from Augsburg. He trained under Johann Thomas Kraus (1696-1775) in the fundamentals of architecture and in perspective. Ref: Katritzky, M. A.         Der Weiss Kunig.

WHAT THINK YE OF THE CONGRESS NOW? OR, AN ENQUIRY, HOW FAR THE AMERICANS ARE BOUND TO ABIDE BY, AND EXECUTE THE DECISION OF, THE LATE CONGRESS

New York: James Rivington, 1775. 48pp. Modern three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. Some light toning and minor soiling. Very good. A Tory pamphlet, severely critical of the rebel Congress, by Thomas Bradbury Chandler, a prominent Loyalist and Anglican clergyman. Chandler was born in Connecticut and educated at Yale. "Although he had advised the repeal of the Stamp Act, he was as ardent a Loyalist as churchman, and the events of the next few years moved him to vigorous protest against the drift toward revolution. In 1775 appeared his pamphlet WHAT THINK YE OF THE CONGRESS NOW? which was a spirited attack upon the authority and actions of the Continental Congress. The occurrences of April 1775 were too much for his Loyalist fervor, and he departed for England the following month" - DAB. From the Loyalist press of James Rivington. ESTC W29702. EVANS 13866.         Fine large lithographic proof by Barozzi of three scenes from the Comtesse de Merlin's 1838 biography of the noted Spanish mezzo-soprano, titled in pencil "Malibran en Italie."

Rare. Malibran was the daughter of the composer Manuel Garcia (1775-1832) and sister of the noted mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot (1821-1910). "To judge from the parts adapted for her by both Donizetti and Bellini, the compass (g to e ), power and flexibility of Malibran';s voice were extraordinary. Her early death turned her into something of a legendary figure with writers and poets during the later 19th century." Elizabeth Forbes in Grove Music Online. Giovanni Barozzi, a Venetian lithographer and publisher, flourished ca. 1835-1845.. The first scene, entitled in pencilled manuscript "Triomphe à Naples," depicts Malibran in a carriage; the second, entitled "L'accident à Naples," depicts a boar startling the horses drawing her carriage, almost overturning it; and the third, entitled "à Venise," depicts Malibran with arms outstretched, presumably singing, being transported in a gondola, with a 3-member musical ensemble on the embankment. 270 x 346 mm.

De Regio Patronatu Indiarum, Quaestiones Aliquae Desumptae et...

[iv], 328, XC; [iv], CXIV, 383 pp. Main text in parallel columns. Folio (Volume I: 13-1/2" x 9"; Volume II: 13-1/4" x 9"). Contemporary limp vellum, early hand-lettered titles to spine, ties lacking from Volume II, which had renewed endleaves. Moderate rubbing and light soiling, a few minor chips to spines, corners bumped, wear to corners of Volume I, vellum just beginning to crack though its rear pastedown. Light toning to text, worming to a few sections of Volume II, mostly to margins and with negligible loss to text, light foxing to a few leaves in each volume, internally clean. Ex-library. Bookplates to front pastedowns. A handsome copy. * Second and final edition. Frasso, a Peruvian jurist of the Regalist school, presents an important legal analysis that supports the crown's power over the church in Spain's American colonies. The treatment of indigenous peoples was the source of tension between the Church and Crown. Both parties pursued colonial goals, but the Church was concerned about welfare of native people and attempted to ameliorate the effects of their exploitation by the Spanish government. The first edition was published in 1677-1679. Both editions are rare in the trade. OCLC locates 3 copies of the second edition in North American law libraries (Columbia, Harvard, UT-Austin).

- Poggendorff I, 1338 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
