A Unique Pairing: Connecticut Printer Timothy Green’s scarce 1774 Proceedings of the American Continental Congress , with CT Treasury Order Paying Him to Distribute it

New-London 1774 - Book. Extracts from the Votes and proceedings of the American Continental Congress, held at Philadelphia on the 5th of September 1774 Containing the Bill of rights, a List of grievances, Occasional resolves, the Association, an Address to the People of Great-Britain, a Memorial to the Inhabitants of the British American Colonies, and an Address to the Inhabitants of the Province of Quebec. New-London: Timothy Green, 1774. Quarto, 16 pp. Sewn as issued. Edges chipped with small loss at corners of first leaves (not affecting text). With:CONNECTICUT REVOLUTIONARY WAR TREASURY. Manuscript Document Signed. Order to pay Timothy Green "To Transporting to the Several Counties, the Doings of the Continental Congress," April 17, 1775, New London, Conn. 1 p., 6 x 9 in. Signed twice by Nathan Baxter, countersigned by Richard Law, Thomas Mumford, and Caleb Knight. Historical BackgroundThe First Continental Congress met in September 1774 as Americans united in their desire to maintain their English rights but unwilling to accept the decades of coercive Parliamentary actions intended to reestablish dominion over the recalcitrant colonies. Laying a foundation for American independence, it passed a Declaration of Rights on Oct. 14, in which the colonists protest violation of their rights as Englishmen by the Stamp Act, the Townsend duties, the Coercive Acts, and the Quebec Act. It asserts the colonists' rights to peaceably assemble and maintain their own legislatures. It also records the formation of the Continental Association, where the colonies (but for Georgia) agreed to mutual non-importation, non-exportation, and non-consumption of British goods. They further resolved to gather the following May if there had been no redress, and included two addresses, one directly to the people of Great Britain and another to the inhabitants of the colonies that justified their actions.Published first in Philadelphia while Congress was sitting, other Eastern cities followed, with the proceedings helping to unify opposition to the Crown. In New London, Timothy Green (1737-1796) published two editions, this in 16-pages and another in 70 pages with the same text but larger type and smaller pages. This particular Green (who is often confused with a nephew also named Timothy) took over the Connecticut Gazette from his brother Thomas in 1763 and changed the name to the New London Gazette. According to Evans, the edition issued by Green by order of the Connecticut government on November 3 is regarded as the best. (Evans 13732.) Here, Green is reimbursed for expenses of £2-5 for "transporting to the several counties the doings of the Continental Congress, printed by the order of the colony of Connecticut." Issued just two days before the Battles of Lexington and Concord, it marks the turning point between political discourse and the beginning of the shooting war-the point when the colonists fired the "shot heard 'round the world."Moving at the speed of government, justices Law and Mumford ordered the bill paid in September 1775 and forwarded it to treasurer John Lawrence in Hartford, who then paid Green's representative Caleb Knight on November 14 1775, and then audited the following May.Richard Law (1733-1806) was an American lawyer, jurist and statesman from New London, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale in 1751, passed the bar in 1755, and practiced privately until he became a justice of the peace in New London, 1765 to 1775. Law had a lengthy career serving in the Connecticut General Assembly, as that state's delegate to the Continental Congress, and as chief judge in New London County. In 1789, President George Washington nominated Law to sit on the newly established U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut.Thomas Mumford (1728-1799) was a wealthy merchant and ship-owner who served as Groton's representative in the Connecticut General Assembly. Mumford was instrumental in financing the expedition against Tic. (See website for full description)

With a final leaf of advertisements for Benjamin White in London. ESTC Citation No. T113910 Very Good + Pennant is sometimes considered the leading British zoologist after John Ray and before Charles Darwin. But he was also an inveterate traveller who, In 1769, undertook a tour of Scotland, chiefly of the highlands, a region then little known by outsiders yet of interest for its natural history. A Tour in Scotland, 1769, first published in 1771, "is of interest for its descriptions and for its method: Pennant circulated 'Queries, addressed to the Gentlemen and Clergy of North-Britain' [Scotland] with standard questions about natural history and the past and present state of the parish in order to allow locals to give 'a fuller and more satisfactory Account of their Country, than it is the Power of a Stranger and transient Visitant to give.' In that regard Pennant has much in common with the earlier use of circulated queries by natural philosophers such as Robert Boyle and, in Scotland, by the natural historian and geographer Sir Robert Sibbald, and Pennant importantly prefigures the parish-based assessment of Scotland published by Sir John Sinclair in the 1790s." ¶ Caillet n°8510 - Dorbon n°2493 - Fesch p.814.

Tyrolis sub felici regime Mariae Theresiae. chorographice delineata. curante Ignat. Weinhart.

Folio. With 8 lithographed plates. Contemporary green morocco, the boards covered with the original publisher's printed paper wrappers.

      - BMC NH, p. 274; DSB II, p. 552; not in Ward. Rare work with descriptions of more than a dozen kinds of fossils, mostly ammonites, with more than 50 figures beautifully lithographed on 8 plates. Leopold Christian von Buch (1774-1853), German geologist and traveller, studied mineralogy and chemistry in Berlin and Freiburg with Abraham Werner. Schooled in the Neptunian doctrine, he believed that basalt was formed by crystallization from water, but after he visited Italy and France he radically changed his views to contradict Werner's teaching and accepted basalt as the product of volcanic activity. His major achievement in this field consists in distinguishing between ammonites and nautilidae by observing the intricate structure of lines in the former. Buch was aware of the value of guide-fossils, and sought to enhance their usefulness with careful drawings and descriptions. Some stains and foxing on the binding and endpapers.         A Political Survey of Britain...

London: for the author; and sold by Richardson and Urquhart, and others, 1774. Two volumes, large quarto, magnificent tree calf, flat spines featuring gilt foliate ornament with green and crimson morocco labels. Redolent of the 1780s in its strictly contemporary binding, Campbell's Political Survey describes the England that the First Fleet left behind.More than dry political economy, the survey contains a wealth of information regarding the trades, agriculture, transportation, fisheries, seaports, markets and natural resources of Britain. The author was appointed the King's agent for the province of Georgia in 1765; accordingly this survey is rich with reference to the American and West Indian colonies (although the possibility of revolution is conspicuously absent). The subtitle itself says much of the author's aspirations for national self-sufficiency: the book is 'intended to shew That we have not as yet approached near the Summit of Improvement, but that it will afford Employment to many Generations before they push to their utmost Extent the natural advantages of Great Britain.'This set, with its elegant binding, bears the bookplates and ownership signature of Alexander Allardyce (c.1743-1801), a Scottish slaver who made his fortune in the West Indies. Upon his return home, Allardyce entered parliament and spent lavishly on the improvement of Dunottar House near Aberdeen and its magnificent walled garden. Upper joints of both volumes just starting, a little inoffensive wear to the extremities. Fine set.

S.n. [Marc Michel Rey]. Rare and interesting meeting of these two works. New edition of the system of nature after the rare original 1770 and first edition of Helvetius on the same date of 1774 that this new edition of Mirabaud; actually three editions were published on the same date, with a different collation, without having been able to determine if there is a true original. Full sheepskin marbled time. Smooth back ornate. Part of title in red morocco, and volume number in black morocco. Red edges. Caps tail pulled. A brown spot on the top plate of Volume I. Restoring using a piece of leather on the upper flat of Volume II. Pretty good copy. Helvetius's book is an exegesis and a review of the system of nature, the author seems to have condensed the material in the form of maxims and assertions, all resting on a strong materialistic creed. We now know that the book is perhaps not Helvetius, although it recognizes its philosophy. As for the system of nature Mirabaud, he was received like a bomb in the middle letters, and finally poorly received by philosophers. It was not overtly materialist theses d'Holbach who were convicted but the demonstration of atheism and anti-clericalism. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. He did for the English what the imperial publication of Roman law did for the people of Rome... The Commentaries are not only a statement of the law of Blackstone's day, but the best history of English law as a whole which had yet appeared... the skillful manner in which Blackstone uses his authorities new and old, and the analogy of other systems of law, to illustrate the evolution of the law of his day, had a vast influence both in England and America, in implanting in the profession a sound tradition of the historical development of the law..."

A New Voyage round the World, in the years 1768, 1769, 1770, and 1771; Undertaken by Order of his present Majesty, performed by Captain James Cook, in the ship Endeavour, Drawn up from his own Journal, and from the Papers of Joseph Banks, Esq...

New York: James Rivington, 1774. Two volumes, octavo, with two folding engravings and a folding map; in contemporary sprinkled calf,n. The highly important first American publication of Cook's first voyage. This is also the first American work to publish details of the Australian east coast, and the map is the first serious American depiction of a complete Australian continent. The book is very rare on the market, remarkably few copies having appeared for sale in modern times, most of them imperfect or in less than satisfactory condition. American books of this period tend to survive in small numbers, invariably in poor state. In this context the copy offered here is unusually good. This is an example of the first issue, with seventeen pages of subscribers' names (a second issue had eighteen pages, while a third issue appeared without any list of subscribers). The frontispiece to the first volume (perhaps the second too - it is unsigned) was engraved by the American folk hero Paul Revere not long before the famous Midnight Ride, the event that ensured his leap to fame. Revere (1734-1818) was a gold and silversmith who sometimes supplemented his income with other work. During the economic depression that preceded the Revolution he began to work as a dentist and also as an engraver, producing a number of book illustrations along with more ephemeral material, such as business cards and bills of fare.Very few accounts of Cook's three voyages were published in America before the end of the eighteenth century: this was the first, and just six more would follow. One of the reasons for this may have been the general availability of imported English publications, but as Holmes points out, from a broadside dated 26 March 1774, there was a good economic incentive for a local publication in this case: "Whosoever would purchase the English Edition of the late Voyage round the World... must give Three Guineas for it; which excessive price has engaged James Rivington's Proposing to the public, a complete edition of that work... for one dollar and a half... " slight browning and staining as normal for American books of the period neatly respined with portions of original spines laid down. An excellent copy.

[4],vii,[1],568; [4],606,[2, errata]pp, with half-titles, engraved frontispiece portrait (in vol. I) by J. Vitalba after William Hoare. Contemporary calf, boards framed with French fillets, spines, in five compartments, rebacked, original red morocco lettering and numbering pieces gilt laid down, later marbled end papers, all edges gilt. An excellent, wide-margined set, bindings tight and secure, some gatherings moderately foxed but generally clean and bright. Gulick 2B. Rothschild 596. Lowndes 434. Gibson's Library, p. 94. Near Fine First Edition, Second State (with misprint "quia uroit," corrected to "qui auroit," vol. I, p. 55, line 16). Written almost daily beginning in 1737, Lord Chesterfield's famous letters, to his illegitimate son, conceived in Flanders when Chesterfield was ambassador at The Hague, "are full of sensible instruction, admirably expressed, more particularly in matters of good breeding . . ." (Oxford Companion to English Literature). Chesterfield's widow prepared the 395 letters for publication within a year of his death, and the work won immediate popularity. Like the 'Meditations' of Marcus Aurelius, these are a timeless collection of moral lessons drawn from a life well-lived, an elegantly written vade mecum, with instruction on behaving ethically and on the art of becoming a gentleman and man of the world. Arguably the finest collection of letters in English (and certainly among the most edifying), an epistolary classic (reprinted 27 times in the eighteenth century alone and still in print today). N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Early 19th century paper card binding with paper label to spine (extremities rubbed, corners bumped, chipping to spine probably due to removed label). Internally only little age-toned, a few occasional ink corrections in contemporary hand. Provenance: Akademischer Verein und Burschenschaft "Glück Auf" Freiberg (old library stamp to title page, shelf mark and 3 stamps to endpaper). A fresh, crisp and virtually unspotted copy internally. ----Dibner 91; Evans 64; Norman 2205; Sparrow 196; Honeyman 3106; D.S.B. XIV, p.257; Sotheran II, 9271; Wilson, Mineral Collecting, 99-100; Ward-Carozzi 2299; Ferchl 575; Zittel 56. FIRST EDITION of Werner's very rare work in which he classified the outward characteristics of minerals and established standards of quantification which continued to be used into the 19th-century. He is best known as the author of an influential oceanic theory of the origin of world's crust, which gave rise to the Neptunist-Vulcanist theory which was to dominate 19th-century geology (Norman). The first book by "the most renowned geologist and mineralogist of his day" (Zittel); Wilson describes Werner as "the father of modern mineralogy." "Von den äusserlichen Kennzeichen der Fossilien was not a mineral system but a classification of external characteristics of minerals, designed to aid the worker of the student in the field. In it Werner gave an unprecedented number of external characteristics with definitions, usually accompanied by homely examples which could be understood by both the layman and the natural philosopher. He also attempted to establish some standards of quantification and thus to clear away the vagueness in the terminology then in use." (D.S.B.). Very Good.

J.Cook

Paris: Saillant et Nyon, 1774. Engraved map, 295 x 335 mm.; original folds. French edition of Cook's chart, which was published the previous year in an engraving by John Cheevers after Cook's original for Hawkesworth's official account of the first voyage. This was the earliest charting of the coast of Queensland; it details the tracks and anchorages of the Endeavour as the expedition sailed north along the coastline in 1770, and commemorates one of the most memorable passages of Cook's first voyage. Far North Queensland was a difficult passage for the Endeavour: the ship ran aground on a shoal near the Hope Isles and required numerous repairs at Endeavour River. The expedition's naturalists, Joseph Banks, Herman Spöring and Daniel Solander, used the delay as an opportunity to collect Australian flora for European study. Cook's chart shows the exact spot of the reef where the ship went aground, as well as Endeavour River, where they beached the ship. The track to Cape York, including the passage through Providential Channel, is marked. The original manuscript chart from which this derives, now in the British Library, is reproduced in Historical Records of NSW (1893, plate 6). In fine condition, with good margins.

Bickerstaff's Boston Almanack for the Year of Our Redemption 1775; being the Third after Leap-Year, the Fifteenth in the Reign of King George III...

Boston: Mills & Hicks, 1774. Duodecimo, 32 pp., original printed wrappers. Rare American-printed Almanac with an important notice of "An Account of the Inhabitants of New Zealand, (embellished with an elegant Representation of a Warrior of that Nation, and two Natives of New-Holland, advancing to Combat)."A full-page of text discusses the Maori, their dress, carriage and conversation, comparing them to Tahitians. The image is closely based on Parkinson's "Two Natives of New Holland advancing to combat; New Zealand warrior in his proper dress & armour" which appeared in his Journal of a Voyage to the South Seas. Another American version of the plate had been included in the 1774 New York edition of the official account of Cook's first voyage, that plate famously engraved by the folk hero Paul Revere. This Almanac version would appear to be based on the Revere plate, and is one of the earliest representations of the Aborigines and Maori to appear in America. The Almanac also includes an extract from Bernard Romans' Concise Natural History of East and West Florida, which describes the Choctaw Indians and some of their customs. Drake notes two states of this 1775 edition of Bickerstaff, the issue point concerning the appearance of the price at the bottom of the wrapper, as here. Full page woodcut to verso of title trimmed a little close affecting the caption, title-page loose; very good.

Paris, Herissant, 1769. 12mo. With 3 full-page engraved plates. Contemporary calf, spine gilt.

      - Grimm & Diderot, Correspondance littéraire VI, p. 488; not in Brunet; Chadenat; Cox; Graesse. Rare first edition of an interesting description of a voyage to India and the coast of Coromandel. The plates represent Brama, the God of the Indians, the tower of a pagoda, and a man playing the flute to his dancing snakes. A new edition was published in 1774 (Paris, Coustard). M. de La Flotte, who went on board of the squadron of general Lally, was a witness of the 'destruction' of India under the reign of this general. De La Flotte most likely fulfilled the position of scribe on board. He was imprisoned by the English and later went on board of an English ship on its way to China. With the bookplate of H.H. Jonkers; binding slightly rubbed; library stamp on first flyleaf. Good copy of an interesting account on the Coromandel Coast.
