Letters to married women. The third edition, revised, and considerably enlarged.

London: printed for the author; and sold by G. Kearsly 1774 - 12mo., xvii + (3) + 256pp., including the leaf of advertisements before the main register (advertising Smith's Family Physician>), with the contemporary armorial bookplate of Grant Mitchell on front pastedown and the near-contemporary signature of Charlotta Amelia Mitchell >on title-page, contemporary plain sheep, worn at joints. A very good crisp copy. First published in 1767: 2nd ed. 1768: 3rd ed. 1774. Translated into French 1770: into Dutch 1775: and the 1st American edition, Philadelphia 1792. Although copies of the first three editions of Smith's popular little work are now very scarce, later editions, particularly those of the 6th ed. of 1792, are relatively common. Letters to married women> is a group of 15 'letters' in each of which the author addresses various aspects of pregnancy and child care (Letters I - XII), milk (Letter XIII), the sick chamber (Letter XIV), and old age and death (Letter XV), the last letter being dated March 20, 1774. It is primarily, though, on the subject of pregnancy, infancy, and children that Smith's book was considered an authority. The first two chapters, however, consider the subject of 'marks' or birthmarks, and Smith goes about showing that the popular view that such marks 'have been generally considered as the effect of a fright, or a disappointment of the mothers longings' has no scientific validity. The author, although a convinced advocate of breast feeding - and he also warns of the 'evils' of 'delivering children to the care of foster-nurses' - describes here an artificial breast or infant suckling system of his own design. 'Since this book made its first appearance', Smith writes, 'I have contrived a milk-pot for my own nursery . For the satisfaction of my readers I shall give a description of it. This pot is somewhat in form like an urn; it contains a little more than a quarter of a pint; its handle, and neck or spout, are not unlike those of a coffee-pot, except that the neck of this arises from the very bottom of the pot, and is very small . The end of the spout is a little raised, and forms a roundish knob, somewhat in appearance like a small heart; this is perforated by three or four small holes: a piece of fine rag is tied loosely over it, which serves the child to play with, instead of the nipple, and through which, by the infant's sucking, the milk is constantly strained. The child is equally satisfied as it would be with the breast; it never wets him in the least; he is obliged to labour for every drop he receives in the same manner as when at the breast; and, greatly in recommendation of this contrivance, the nurses confess it is more convenient than a boat, and that it saves a great deal of trouble in the feeding of an infant; which is the greatest security to parents, that their servants will use it, when they themselves are not present' Smith concludes by announcing that 'the model of this milk-pot is left with Mr. Morrison, at the Three Kings, in Cheapside, for the benefit of the public. The milk-pots are now also made in the Queen's-ware, in order that the poor may be accommodated'. Hugh Smith, M.D. (1736?-1789), from a family of medical practitioners, practised at Hatton Garden in London, having graduated M.D. from Leyden in 1755. He married the wealthy daughter of Archibald Maclean of Trevor Park, East Barnet. [Attributes: First Edition]

A Holy Bible for children, shared by the great navigator Matthew Flinders and his younger siblings.

A highly significant bibliographic treasure, with an association to one of the most important figures in the history of Australian exploration, Captain Matthew Flinders, RN (1774-1814), the navigator and cartographer who led the first circumnavigation of Australia and identified it as a continent.  The Holy Bible, adapted to the Use of Schools and private families: Containing all those Parts of the Old and New Testament which relate to the Faith and Practice of a Christian ... The whole carefully selected in the Manner recommended by the late pious and learned Dr. Watts. London : Printed for C. D. Piguenit, No. 3, Aldgate, M DCC LXXXIV [1784]. Thick octavo, original full blind-blocked mottled calf (scuffed, corners worn, upper board detached); spine with raised bands (small loss at head and tail); the front pastedown with the bookplate of 'Matthew Flinders, Donington, Lincolnshire' [surgeon, father of the navigator] and the original bookseller's price of 5 shillings in manuscript; front and rear pastedowns with small remnants of red wax which would have originally held in place a protective jacket (now absent); pp viii, 616; signs of much use, neverthless internally clean and complete. Matthew Flinders, RN, was born and raised in the small market town of Donington, Lincolnshire, where his father, Dr. Matthew Flinders (1750-1802), was a surgeon and obstetrician. The fortuitous survival of the diary and account books of Dr. Flinders means that we have access to a wealth of information about the Flinders household - including the expenditure of Dr. Flinders, in forensic detail - and the circumstances in which the young Matthew Flinders grew up. These invaluable documents have been published as 'Gratefull to providence' : the diary and accounts of Matthew Flinders, surgeon, apothecary and man-midwife, 1775-1802, edited by Martyn Beardsley and Nicholas Bennett (Lincoln : Lincoln Record Society, 2007); another example of the bookplate of Dr. Matthew Flinders is illustrated in this publication (plate 11). Matthew's mother, Susannah (Ward) Flinders (1752-1783), died at the age of 30 when Matthew, her first child, was just nine. She had given birth to 10 children, only five of whom were still living at the time of her death: Matthew; Elizabeth (1775-1799); Susanna (1779-1827); John (1781-1834) and Samuel (1782-1834). The Flinders had lost an infant son (John) in 1776, and Susannah had suffered four stillbirths - twin girls (1777) and twin boys (1778). The deep religious faith of Dr. Flinders is exemplified in his fatalistic diary entry that records the stillbirths of the twin girls: 'How kind is the Providence of God thus to free us from the expence (sic) and care of a numerous family, for had all our young ones lived with us, we should scarce [have] known what to have done with them. The two we have living, if agreeable to Divine wisdom, I would gladly keep, but by no means wish an increase.' Within 8 months of his wife's death, Dr. Flinders had married Elizabeth Ellis (née Weekes), a widower, with whom he had two children, Hannah (1788-1842) and Henrietta (b. 1791). Dr. Flinders, an avid reader, purchased most of his books from John Albin, printer, publisher and principal bookseller (1775-1800) in the nearby town of Spalding, 8 miles distant from Donington. He had inculcated in his son a love of reading from an early age, and it was from Albin that he acquired for the already literate eight-year-old Matthew, in April 1782, a copy of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe - a book that had an enormous influence on Matthew's imagination, and one which he famously claimed had induced him to go to sea (Ernest Scott, The Life of Captain Matthew Flinders, R.N. Sydney : Angus & Robertson, 1914, p.12). A strong classical education for his son was paramount in Dr. Flinders' eyes: after being tutored at home, then gaining a preparatory education at the Donington free school until the age of twelve, Matthew spent three years at the Horbling Grammar School, where, under the tutelage of Reverend John Shinglar, he received a solid grounding in Latin, Greek and mathematics. In 1789, at the age of 15, Matthew joined the Royal Navy. The Holy Bible, adapted to the Use of Schools and private families, first published in 1772, was an abridged version of the scriptures primarily intended for young and inexperienced readers. Without doubt, Dr. Flinders acquired this copy of the 1784 edition expressly for his young and growing family. It would have been shared across the Flinders household, initially read for the most part by Matthew, and then, as they became literate, by his younger siblings. The evidence of a protective jacket having once been attached suggests that the Bible would have been treated as a portable book, and that Dr. Flinders thought it prudent to safeguard it whilst it was in the hands of its young users, thus prolonging its life. Presumably the book was purchased (there is no presentation inscription to indicate that it was a gift, nor any mention of it in Dr. Flinders' diary); but although the majority of Dr. Flinders' book acquisitions are itemised in his account books, with numerous purchases, including other religious books (ibid., II, p.20) described in detail, we find no explicit reference to Dr. Watts' Holy Bible. There are, however, several entries in Dr. Flinders' account books between 1785 and 1789 which record payments to John Albin for group purchases. It is very possible that the acquisition of this Bible - for the sum of 5 shillings - was covered by one of these generic statements. Provenance: Batemans Auctioneers, Stamford, Lincolnshire, 2 April 2016, lot 230A; we maintain that the auction house's caveat that the bookplate may have been added later is in error.

        Opuscules physiques et chymiques

Durand; Didot; Esprit, Paris 1774 - [2], xxx, [2], 436pp. 3 folding engraved plates. 195 x 120 mm. 18th cent. calf gilt, lightly rubbed.but a fine clean copy with crisp impressions of the plates. First edition, with 6 cancel leaves as noted in Duveen & Klickstein. Lavoisier's first major work, "an advance over anything which had gone before" (Partington III, p. 393), in which he expressed his first doubts about the validity of the phlogiston theory. The Opuscules contains a history of gases (about which very little was known at the time) and a record of the quantitative experiments Lavoisier had carried out the previous year with great excitement and a presentiment of their revolutionary potential. He attacked the problems of combustion, calcination and air fixation, and solved the questions of whether quicklime is more or less complex than chalk; whether quicklime contains acidum pingue or fixed air; whether a metal is more or less complex than its calx; and whether calcination or combustion of a substance depends on the absorption of air.         Voyage au Canada, dans les années 1795, 1796 et 1797; ... et enrichi d'une carte générale du pays, et de onze planches offrant les points de vue les plus remarquables, et notamment le fameux Saut de Niagara. Tome premier[-troisième].Paris, Gérard (printed by Munier), An XI [1802/1803]. 3 volumes. 8vo. With 11 engraved plates and a loosely inserted folding engraved map. Contemporary uniform tree calf, gold-tooled.

Chadenat 1228; cf. Lande, Canadiana 890; Sabin 102544. Second French edition of an early description of Canada and the eastern part of the United States. The Irishman Isaac Weld (1774-1856) spent over two years in North America researching the suitability of the countryside for large-scale immigration of Irish citizens. Departing from Philadelphia in 1795 and guided by Indians he made his way through dense woodlands and along rivers. On the way he visited several cities where he saw much of the best society, and made the acquaintance of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In 1799 he published his travel book, which went through several English editions and was translated into French (An 8 [1799/1800]), German and Dutch. The present edition is illustrated with 11 plates by the Paris engraver Louis Francois Mariage (active 1785-1811), chiefly depicting natural scenery, including Niagara Falls. Also included is an interesting early map of Canada and the northern part of the United States showing Weld's travel route. Although his book met some opposition in North America itself - mainly because of his general lack of sympathy with the American patriots - his descriptions were influential because they were relatively early and were long included in compilations of travellers' reports on the United States in this period. With cancelled library stamps on the titles. In fine condition, with only an occasional minor spot. Binding also fine. A fine copy of this early and significant travel account.

Systeme de la nature [Ensemble] Le vrai sens du systême de la nature EDITION ORIGINALE

à Londres|[Amsterdam]: S.n. [Marc Michel Rey], 1774. Fine. S.n. [Marc Michel Rey], à Londres [Amsterdam] 1774, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in 8 (12,5x19,5cm), (14) 397pp. et (4) 500pp. (3) ; 84pp. (3), relié. - Rare and interesting meeting of these two works. New edition of the system of nature after the rare original 1770 and first edition of Helvetius on the same date of 1774 that this new edition of Mirabaud; actually three editions were published on the same date, with a different collation, without having been able to determine if there is a true original. Full sheepskin marbled time. Smooth back ornate. Part of title in red morocco, and volume number in black morocco. Red edges. Caps tail pulled. A brown spot on the top plate of Volume I. Restoring using a piece of leather on the upper flat of Volume II. Pretty good copy. Helvetius's book is an exegesis and a review of the system of nature, the author seems to have condensed the material in the form of maxims and assertions, all resting on a strong materialistic creed. We now know that the book is perhaps not Helvetius, although it recognizes its philosophy. As for the system of nature Mirabaud, he was received like a bomb in the middle letters, and finally poorly received by philosophers. It was not overtly materialist theses d'Holbach who were convicted but the demonstration of atheism and anti-clericalism. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

1774 - Acquaforte, 1774-75 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a destra "Io Dominicus Filius delin. et sculp." ; a sinistra l’iscrizione 'Io. Bapta Tiepolo pinx, in Sacello B.M. de Monte Carmelo Venetijs". Etching, 1774-75, lettered along bottom 'Io. Bapta Tiepolo pinx, in Sacello B.M. de Monte Carmelo Venetijs" and "Io Dominicus Filius delin. et sculp." After G.B. Tiepolo. Only state. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, light trace of ink in the middle, otherwise very good condition. This etching reproduces one of the nine ceiling canvanes paintend by G. B. Tiepolo for Sala del Capitolo of the Scuola Grande dei Carmini, in Venice, between 1739 and 1749. The scene depicts Angels bearing the book containing the rules of the confraternity. This sheet is dating from the 1774-75. Along with three other sheets, depicting the scenes of the side compartments of the ceiling, they were not included in the first edition of the "Catalogue" to G.B. Tiepolo, 1774, which are only announced by whitespace with numbers 1 and 2, whereas they were included in the second edition, 1775. Unrecorded by De Vesme. D. Succi, La Serenissima nello specchio di rame , p. 612 n. 168 Dimensioni 329 187mm [Attributes: First Edition]
