        Joseph Banks Esq

      W. Dickinson, 30 January, London 1774 - Mezzotint portrait, 510 x 370 mm.; a very good impression, mounted and framed. In this fine mezzotint Joseph Banks " the father of Australia" is shown sitting confidently at his desk, surrounded by the accoutrements of his science: books, papers, and a prominently placed world globe. This image is based on the portrait painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1772-3, when Banks was at the height of his fame after returning triumphant from Cook's first voyage and the discovery of the east coast of Australia. His ambitions and achievements are neatly captured in the prominently placed Latin tag, "cras ingens iterabimus æquor" (Horace: "tomorrow we will be back on the vast ocean", and an intriguing choice as the engraving was published at much the same time as Banks withdrew from Cook's second voyage).Joseph Banks was only twenty-eight or twenty-nine when this engraving was made by William Dickinson in the latter half of 1773. It was the same year that Dickinson first began to publish his own prints, after a lengthy apprenticeship and association with the painter Robert Edge Pine, at whose house in St Martin's Lane he lodged between 1768 and 1771. His relationship with Reynolds was evidently good: this was the first of no less than twenty-two mezzotints after Reynolds that he completed and this very rare and fine image of Banks is one of the most celebrated.

Printed in three “authorized” versions edited by Raynal (1770, 1774, and 1780), the Histoire des deux Indes was the work of a score of authors, among them Denis Diderot, Jean le Rond d’Alembert, Charles Pinot-Duclos, and Paul-Henri Thiry, The Baron d’Holbach (1723-1789). Diderot and d’Holbach denounced the tyranny of despotism, which touched a nerve from the French monarchy, resulting in the book being condemned by the French parliament in 1781. Raynal was exiled from France and in fact an order was issued for his arrest even though his name did not appear on the first edition of the work. The Histoire des deux Indes attempted a comprehensive history of the contemporary European colonial enterprise in the Far East and the Atlantic world. Beginning with the fifteenth-century Portuguese explorations and culminating with a sweeping analysis of all colonial powers in the eighteenth century, the Histoire laid bare the progress of conquest for each European nation and its trading companies. Often the ‘progress’ translated into the abuses made possible by the disproportionate use of force and state-sponsored trading monopolies. In his contributions to Raynal's Histoire des deux Indes, he challenges the view that indigenous people benefit from European civilization and argues that the European colonists are the uncivilized ones. He claims that culture ("national character") helps to inculcate morality and reinforces norms of respect, but these norms tend to dissipate when the individual is far from his country of origin. According to Diderot, colonial empires frequently become the sites of extreme brutality because the colonists are far away from legal institutions and informal sanctions and this weakens the habits of restraint, exposing natural man's full instinct for violence (Muthu 2003)." - Margaret Kohn, "Colonialism," Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.         AN ASTRONOMICAL DIARY: OR, ALMANACK FOR THE YEAR OF CHRISTIAN AERA, 1775

Boston: John Kneeland, 1774. [24]pp. 12mo. Dbd. Minor foxing and toning. Very good. An important Revolutionary almanac. The titlepage has a large woodcut entitled "The virtuous patriot at the hour of death," and the first four pages contain "An address to the inhabitants of Boston," in which Low rails against the British. Addressing British-occupied Boston, he writes: "[Your countrymen] are sensible the heavy hand of power under which you are now groaning is designed only as a prelude to the utter abolishment of American freedom." He goes on to decry the Intolerable Acts as a prelude to an era of American slavery to Britain, and to write prophetically: "My dear brethren, the destiny of America seems to be suspended on the present controversy; and it is on your fidelity, firmness, and good conduct, for which you have so remarkably signalized yourselves on all occasions, that a happy issue of it in a great measure depends." Just months after this almanac was published, the first shots of the Revolution would be fired at Lexington and Concord. EVANS 13384. DRAKE 3241.

Design of the Ceiling of Lady Bute's Dressing Room

London, 1774. Engraving, coloured by hand, by B. Pastorini. A fine engraving, with contemporary hand colouring, of a painted plaster and stucco ceiling from the interior at Luton Hoo, a project undertaken by Robert Adam in about 1764 for the Earl of Bute.Robert and his brother James Adam forever changed the face of British architecture by introducing innovative Classical design ideas. From 1754-57, Robert lived in Italy where he had a long productive friendship with Piranesi, which was inspirational for both men. Adam's first book, on Diocletian's palace in Dalmatia, is clearly very like the archaeological investigations Piranesi was making at the same time of similar ruins. Piranesi's friendship and passion for Roman Classicism were seminal influences on Adam, and the greatest single factor, other than his own talent, in the work Adam produced on his return to England.Upon his return, the brothers launched their career by building the Adelphi from the Thames to the Strand in London, which although not a commercial success at the time, included one of London's most cherished buildings, the Adlephi Theatre. Together, the Adam brothers designed and built some of the most famous buildings in England, including such bastions of English architecture as Kenwood House, Keddlestone Manor, and Syon House. To the interiors of their English country houses, the Adams brought wonderful ornamental elements in niches, lunettes, festoons and reliefs. Their classically designed buildings were so numerous in London that they changed the prevailing feel of the city and established their brand of neo-Classicism as the model of elegance and importance. It is asserted that the brothers originated the concept of the uniform facade attached to the typical English row house, an architectural device that distinguishes London buildings. This monumental contribution is evidenced in the Adams' designs for Portland Place and Fitzroy Square, and these were used as architectural models for the whole city. The brothers brought their talents into other areas by designing furniture to complement their beautiful interiors and by creating and publishing a treatise of design entitled 'Works in Architecture'. The work was published in three volumes over an extended span of time, beginning in 1773, with the final volume being published posthumously in 1822.Cf. Brunet I.47; cf. Lowndes I, p.8; DNB; Wilton-Ely, The Mind and Art of Giovanni Battista Piranesi.

Transformationum congeries, interprete Guilielmo Xylandro. Cum Thomae Munckeri notis, quibus suas adjecit Henricus Verheyk.

Brunet I, 330. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Anatomia uteri humani gravidi tabulis illustrata. The anatomy of the human gravid uterus exhibited in figures

Birmingham: John Baskerville, 1774. Hunter, William (1718-83). Anatomia uteri humani gravidi tabulis illustrata. The anatomy of the human gravid uterus exhibited in figures. Double folio. 21 unsigned and unpaginated leaves, each leaf a single sheet. 34 engraved plates prepared by 17 engravers from drawings by Jan van Rymsdyk (fl. 18th cent.), Edward Edwards (1738-1806), Alexander Cozens (d. 1786) and Blakey. Birmingham: John Baskerville, 1774. 651 x 475 mm. Half calf, marbled boards in period style, leather label on front cover. Some mold- and dampstaining (extensive in places), small holes in title repaired, uneven toning. Good copy. First Edition. Hunter's Gravid Uterus, on which he labored for thirty years, is one of the great artistic achievements in medicine. "It is indeed a remarkable book, not the least important aspect of which is the large size of the plates, which Hunter took care to defend in the preface. For him, the technical quality of the plates was of great importance; they combine descriptive clarity with beauty. The work contains thirty-four plates of different kinds; some depict several objects, others a life-size section of the human body-the female trunk between the abdomen and the middle of the thighs. Some plates are packed with detail, others are more schematic, showing large parts in outline only. Facing each plate are a short description and a key. . ." (Jordanova, p. 386). The Gravid Uterus was the largest book printed by John Baskerville, and one of two medical books issued from his press; it is also among the very few medical books issued from a private press. The original drawings from which the engravings made are preserved in the Hunterian Collections at the University of Glasgow Library. Cutter & Viets, History of Midwifery, pp. 33-37, 183-184.

Nuremberg, Georg Wolfgang Knorr, 1774 - Folio (408 x 257 mm), pp [viii] 148, with engraved view of the cave site at head of text and 14 hand-coloured engraved plates; a fine copy in contemporary German half sheep and marbled boards, spine gilt with red morocco label.First edition of the first work on the discovery of fossil humans. Esper discovered the fossilised remains of extinct animals and human bones in the cave of Gaillenreuth in Bavaria. 'A new epoch in the literature of caves began with Esper's investigation of fossil remains of mammalian bones discovered in the Franconian caves. Interest then centred on the paleontological significance of the remains in cave deposits' (Zittel). Esper was the first to discover, and describe in the present work, genuine remains of fossil man, although the scientific proof of their fossil origin had to await Schmerlin's researches published 1833-4.Esper, a Lutheran pastor and amateur naturalist, lived near the Gaillenreuth cave in Bavaria. The entrance to the cave was on a steep slope high above the valley, so that the bones could not have been deposited there by the existing river in flood. Esper considered the possibility that man had lived at the same time as these extinct animals, but concluded that the human and animal bones were probably bought together and commingled as a result of the Biblical flood. He was also baffled by the animal bones, similar to large bears, hyenas, and even lions; fauna unknown in the region. He observed that the bones did not match exactly those of any living species. He sent specimens from the cave to Buffon, Daubenton, Camper, and Hunter. His descriptions and illustrations are extremely accurate. The fine plates are by V. Bischoff, J.A. Eisenmann and A. Hoffer.A French edition was published the same year; both are rare, with only three copies of the French edition appearing in ABPC and none of the German original.Nissen ZBI 1318; Ward and Carozzi 756; OCLC: Harvard, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences

Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments is drawn from his course of lectures while he was a professor of philosophy at Glasgow Univrsity. "The work received wide acclaim and so impressed the stepfather of the young duke of Buccleuch that he invited Smith to become the duke's tutor, with the promise of a pension for life. . . The greater part of the Theory of Moral Sentiments is an account of moral psychology. . . The mainstay of Smith's moral psychology is sympathy. . . Smith characterizes the mechanism of sympathy in this way: 'Whatever is the passion which arises from any object in the person principally concerned, an analogous emotion springs up at the thought of this situation, in the breast of every attentive spectator'. . . Smith argues that if the appearance of grief or joy, for example, arouses similar feelings in us, it is because these feelings suggest to us the general idea of some good or evil that has befallen the person in whom we observe them" (Encyclopedia of Philosophy VII, pp. 461ff). "The Theory of Moral Sentiments was [first] published in April 1759 and at once brought Smith something more than local fame. It was hailed by David Hume in typical ironic manner: 'I proceed to tell you the melancholy news', he wrote from London, 'that your book has been very unfortunate: for the public seem disposed to applaud it extremely'" (Mossner. Adam Smith: The Biographical Approach, p. 12). This edition is exceptionally rare. Its authentic interior, containing the original objects, has remained the same since then. So Teylers can justly lay claim to the title of being the first and oldest museum in the Netherlands. The library is interesting for itself. There is no other library in the Netherlands with such a beautiful and complete collection of literature from the 18th and 19th centuries about botany, zoology, and the earth sciences. In total, the book and journal collection consists of more than 125,000 volumes. Major acquisitions continued to be made until approximately 1940. Since then, the library has no longer been a place for finding out about the latest scientific developments, but primarily as a museum room of historic interest.         In Provincial Congress, Cambridge, December 5, 1774. Resolved, that the Proceedings of the American Continental Congress, held at Philadelphia, on the Fifth of September last, reported by the Honourable delegates from this colony, have with the deliberation due to their high importance been considered by us..

[Boston: Edes and Gill, 1774. Letterpress broadside. 15 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Signed in print by John Hancock Expert repairs at folds. Rare broadside issued by the Massachusetts's Provincial Congress just a few months following Lexington and Concord, adopting the non-importation resolutions of the first Continental Congress and appointing delegates to the second Continental Congress. The text continues: "... and the American Bill of Rights therein contained, appears to be formed with the greatest Ability and judgment, to be founded on the immutable Laws of Nature and Reason ... the ruinous and iniquitous Measures, which in Violation of these Rights at present convulse and threaten Destruction to America, appear to be clearly pointed out and judicious plans adopted for defeating them ..."The resolutions which follow thank the Continental Congress for their efforts and appoint John Hancock, Thomas Cushing, Samuel Adams, John Adams and Robert Treat Paine as representatives to the second Continental Congress. The final resolve of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress printed here concerns the principal action taken by the first Continental Congress in response to the Intolerable Acts, proposing a boycott among all the colonies of British goods to take effect in December 1774, with local Committees of Safety to enforce the boycott and regulate local prices for goods. Here, Massachusetts's takes the agreement a step farther, further prohibiting the sale of any item imported from Great Britain even prior to the December date, unless the Intolerable Acts repealed. The Massachusetts Provincial Congress was founded in October 1774, following the passage of Parliament's Massachusetts Government Act, which in effect dissolved the Massachusetts General Assembly and put governing power in the hands of crown-appointed members of a Governor's Council. The Assembly met anyway and reorganized themselves into the Provincial Congress, with John Hancock as its President. The Provincial Congress would be first autonomous government of the Thirteen Colonies.Rare with six recorded copies and no other examples on the market in over fifty years.Evans 13417; Ford 1753; ESTC W17685.
