Amsterdam, J.C. Sepp, 1772-1781. 9 parts (bound in 4 volumes). Folio (443 x 270mm). With 473 handcoloured engraved plates (of which 425 depict birds). Contemporary half vellum. A splendid work, beautifully coloured. In 1749-1776, the works of Edwards 'A natural history of uncommon birds' and 'Gleanings of natural history' and Catesby 'Natural history of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands' were translated into German and combined into one work under the title 'Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel'. Catesby's work is considered 'the most famous colorplate book of American plant and animal life' (Hunt)./The plates of Edwards and Catesby were re-engraved by Seligmann, further embellished by the addition of figures of plants not present in the originals. The present work is a translation of the German edition into Dutch by Houttuyn with Seligmann's plates. The Dutch edition was published by the famous Dutch publisher Sepp, a company which exercised the utmost care in producing colour-plate books of outstanding quality. The colouring of the Dutch edition seems to be more delicate than the other editions. An unusual clean and fine set of this rare ornithological classic, of which according to the list in volume I, only 90 copies were subscribed. The Dutch edition is the most complete edition having 473 plates. The German edition has 447 plates and the French edition 422 plates./ /Fine Bird Books, pp. 73-74; Landwehr 180; Nissen IVB, 857 & ZBI, 845; Zimmer I, 200.

He was a prodigious worker, and published no less than 43 separate works... - He has been called the "Father of Modern Chemistry", for at least three reasons: (a) He realized that chemistry is worthy of study for its own sake, and not merely as an aid to medicine or as alchemy. (b) He introduced a rigorous experimental method into chemistry. (c) He clearly defined what he called a "corpuscle" or an "element", and showed experimentally that the four elements of Aristotle (fire, air, water, and earth), and the three principles of alchemists (salt, sulphur, and mercury) did not deserve to be called elements or principles at all." Franz Sondheimer - - "Boyle was a firm believer in the particulate nature of matter, and developed his own corpuscular philosophy. Matter to him consisted of particles or atoms of various shapes and sizes arranging themselves into groups which constituted chemical substances; (...)It is a theory much closer to that of modern physical chemistry with its molecules, atoms and kinetic theories, in which comparatively little attention is paid to the elementical character of the substance concerned. The imortance of Boyle's work ('s) must be sought in his combination of chemistry with physics. His corpuscular theory, and Newton's modification of it, gradually led chemists towards an atomic view of matter, though this was only finally established by Dalton." PMM, p..83 - - Illustrations: vol. I, frontispiece: engraved portrait of Boyle from a painting by T. Kersseboom. 3 plates inserted at end; vol. II, 6 plates; vol. Ill, 8 plates; vol.         (Inkvisitionskommissionen af 20. januar 1772). Stor samling af samtidige afskrifter af procesakter.

Orig. manuskript.

        Doorway to Vatican Loggia

Rome, 1772. A highly decorative print from the famous "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano" series, with contemporary colouring of the highest quality from the golden age of the hand-coloured print. A very fine image from the first part of a work titled "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano" depicting the decorative work executed by Raphael and his assistants between 1518-1519 in the Vatican. This remarkable print, one of the first to be published of the decoration of the Logge on the main storey of the Vatican apartments, was probably planned as early as 1760, but was not executed until between 1772 and 1776. The project as a whole was carried out by the painter Gaetano Savorelli, the draughtsman Ludovico Teseo, the architect Pietro Camporesi, and the engravers Giovanni Ottaviani and Giovanni Volpato. The plate is remarkable not only as the first important visual record of Raphael's work, but also for the quality of the hand-colouring - the work on this image is, in our opinion, some of the greatest to be produced in Europe during the whole of the eighteenth century: the golden age of the hand-coloured print. The whole series was of importance not just for the size and magnificent colouring of the prints, but also because of the influence they had on contemporary taste. The decision was made to "borrow" elements from Raphael's Vatican tapestries and insert them where the original frescoes were in too poor a state to be legible. The finished plates therefore represented an amalgam of design elements presented with a crisp freshness of colour that held enormous appeal and stimulated the taste for the "grotesque" in the neo-classical period. Cf. Brunet IV, 1110; cf. Berlin Kat. 4068; cf. Lambert Pattern and Design (V. & A.: 1983), p. 26; "Raphael Invenit: Stampe da Rafaello" (1985) Ottaviano 17; Raphael: Reproduktions-graphik aus vier Jahrhunderten (Coburg: 1984), p. 104. Copper engraving by Ottaviani after drawings by Savorelli and Camporesi, printed in light brown coloured ink with contemporary hand-colouring. Good condition. Three repaired tears to the left blank margin. Sight size: 31 1/8 x 18 1/4 inches.

It is owed to him the organization of the Pehuenche territory.         Decorative pilaster with fruit, flowers, and tendrils

Rome 1772 - A highly decorative print from the famous "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano" series, with contemporary colouring of the highest quality from the golden age of the hand-coloured print. 26; "Raphael Invenit: Stampe da Rafaello" (1985) Ottaviano 11; Raphael: Reproduktions-graphik aus vier Jahrhunderten (Coburg: 1984), p. 104. Copper engraving by Ottaviani after drawings by Savorelli and Camporesi, printed in light brown coloured ink with contemporary hand-colouring. Trimmed to platemark left margin. Good condition.

The Kingdom of Ireland. By Rob't Morden. [A hand-colored engraved map of the whole of Ireland, from Edward Gibson's revised edition "Camden's Britannia". With 2 scales (Irish and English miles) and decorated title cartouche].

London. Sold by Abel Swale, Awnsham and John Churchill. [1695-1772]. - 44.5x 38.5cm, (16"x 19"), image (41.5x 34cm), attractive hand-colouring, decorated title cartouche, colour in the borders, some toning, a few short tears in the margins repaired, very good - English cartographer, Robert Morden (c.1668-1703), is best known for his county maps for Edward Gibson's revised edition of "Camden's Britannia" published in 1695, re-issued in 1722, 1753 and 1772. Morden was the first cartographer to include roads in the atlas. The imprint would indicate that this is from either the 1730 or 1753 issue of Camden. See Bonar Law, p87.

[WEST FLORIDA BRITISH LAND GRANT, SIGNED BY FLORIDA TERRITORIAL GOVERNOR PETER CHESTER]

[Savannah or Jamaica? ca. 1772].. Broadside, 7 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches, completed in manuscript, tipped to card stock. Chipped at edges, closed tear along one fold, none affecting text. Good. A West Florida land grant signed by Peter Chester, British governor of the territory, deeding 1350 acres to Thomas Boyd, a captain in the British Army. The document is dated Sept. 1, 1772. This grant is undoubtedly the product of the Proclamation of 1763, which enabled liberal land grants to British officers who served in the French and Indian War. A group of similar land grants appeared in the Streeter sale accompanied by a note from Streeter asserting that, based on their curious watermarks, they were samples from the earliest Florida press. Servies, in the seminal A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF FLORIDA, later wrote: "However, no evidence of a press in West Florida prior to 1821 has come to light. These and other administrative forms in use in the colony may have been printed in New York, Philadelphia, or Jamaica." That being said, a case for Savannah might also be made. When the British acquired Florida in the settlement of the French and Indian War in 1763, Savannah was the closest British press to the new land. Given that the grant was probably executed in Pensacola or Mobile, it is very possible the documents were printed in Savannah, perhaps even from the press of James Johnston, the first Georgia printer. A most interesting West Florida document. STREETER SALE 1187 (ref). SERVIES 543 (ref).

Metz: Jeean-Baptiste Collignon, Imprimeur de Son Excellence Monseigneur l'Évêque, 1772 - Rare Metz edition of this classic French courtesy book by La Salle (1651- 1719). Reprinted innumerable times since its first appearance in 1702, it was a standard of the genre well into the 19th century. La Salle's book aimed at teaching children the elements of civility and courtesy, not simply as social ornaments, but as specifically Christian virtues. This rare edition from Metz, except for the preliminaries, is entirely set in "civilité" type - a font first designed and cut by Granjon in the 16th century in Antwerp. Based on French handwriting on the day, it received its name from its use in Erasmus's CIVILITE PUERILE in 1559, and was thereafter frequently used in courtesy books. There are no copies in American or British institutions, and OCLC locates only one copy in Europe (Switzerland) "Sixième édition, revue & corrigée". 8vo. [16], 255 pp. Contemporary paper boards, last few leaaves dog-eared, lower corners of a few leaves stained, final few leaves dog-eared, very good. OCLC: 718557211 (one location; none in US); cf. Gumuchian 1765-1767 (later editions) [Attributes: Soft Cover]
