ACTS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, II GEO. III. WITH AN INDEX. [bound with:] ACTS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, 12 GEO. III. WITH AN INDEX

Williamsburg: William Rind, 1772. Folio. Half calf and marbled boards in antique style, leather label. Last leaf backed, minor foxing and toning. Very good. Two Virginia imprints comprising session laws of the General Assembly passed July 1771 and February 1772. Various acts provide relief for owners of tobacco damaged or burned in a warehouse fire, regulations for disciplining the militia, guidelines for "Trials and Outlawries of Slaves," and others, including numerous acts creating infrastructure. The second volume is the second issue, with the correct date in the imprint. Though mentioned on both titlepages, an Index was never printed. Of the first volume, Berg writes: "Once again public money had to be raised to repay planters for tobacco lost or burned at inspection warehouses in Henrico, Chesterfield, King George, and Northampton Counties. The treasurer of the colony was authorized to borrow up to 30,000 pounds to repay those individuals suffering losses." Regarding the second volume, again from Berg: "An act passed at this session to erect and maintain a lighthouse at Cape Henry displays a rare example of financial cooperation between the colonies of Maryland and Virginia. Both colonial assemblies approved this joint venture, which was to be financed from a duty placed on ships using the Chesapeake Bay." Rare, with Berg recording only nine copies of the first and eleven copies of the second. EVANS 12265, 12591. BERG 200, 208. ESTC W8520, W23642. OCLC 6325885, 63255965.

JOYOH BUNSHOH ITO GURUMA: THE SPINNING WHEEL OF LETTER WRITING FOR WOMEN.

[Osaka 1772, Kashiwaraya]. Stitched blue wrs., large format,. 18 x 26 cm., minor edge wear, contents clean, [204]p. wood-. block printed on doulbe leaves, 8p. color prints, ca. 75 b w. illustrations on women's culture, a small old worm hole on. the first few pages, no loss. This excellent work is devoted to Japanese women, with 60 illustrations on the events of the twelve months, about 50 others on women's culture all skillfully drawn by Kitao. * With a profusion of calligraphy examples on how to write a New Year's letter & reply, festival letters, invitations, plum blossom letters, yearly celebration letters, holidays, weddings, births, 'thank you' notes, gifts &c. A very interesting illustrated book, with very good insight to the activities of the Japanese before Western influence. Charming illustrations show a wide variety of customs and festivals. * Color plates show shell gathering at the shore, Great Shrine at Edo, Shamisen & Koto playing, Madame Lady Murasaki composing her "Tales of Genji," the first novel written by a woman. With most beautiful examples of calligraphy examples. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: K. Toda: THE RYERSON COLLECTION: p.216 top of the page. * Louise Brown: BLOCK PRINTING & BOOK ILLUSTRATION IN JAPAN: p.131, bottom of the page, wherein Brown lists books signed by Sukenobu, although he died in 1751, may actually have been the work of his son. Clearly the art work is exceptionally similar if not that of Sukenobu. It is our opinion, because of the coloring, this must be the work of his son, with the innovative color added. * Not in Kerlen. * Color scans can be sent by e-mail.         THE ENTERTAINING HISTORY OF KING PHILIP'S WAR, WHICH BEGAN IN THE MONTH OF JUNE, 1675. AS ALSO OF EXPEDITIONS MORE LATELY MADE AGAINST THE COMMON ENEMY, AND ALL INDIAN REBELS, IN THE EASTERN PARTS OF NEW-ENGLAND

Newport, 1772. Antique three-quarter calf and marbled board, gilt, leather labels. Portrait frontispiece reinforced at gutter and corners. Plate of King Philip with old skillfully repaired tear in center, trimmed close on outer edge. Moderate wear and soiling to text; some leaves with small tears at edges, neatly repaired. Several signatures supplied from a slightly shorter copy. Overall a good copy. The second edition, after the exceedingly rare first published in Boston in 1716. One of the most popular narratives of King Philip's War, mainly narrating the prowess and adventures of Benjamin Church, one of the most important officers in the War, by his son Thomas. This edition is notable for its two engravings by Paul Revere. The frontispiece portrait of Church is not based on any original image of him, but lifted by Revere from a 1768 portrait of Charles Churchill, with a powder horn added. One of Revere's most famous engravings is the portrait of King Philip, actually based on one of Verelst's engravings of the Indian Kings of Canada. Despite this, it is notable not only as a Revere engraving but also as the first portrait of an Indian actually printed in America. This second edition contains a sketch of the life of Benjamin Church, not found in the first edition.

The Analysis of Beauty. Written with a view of fixing the fluctuating ideas of taste.

      W. Strahan 1772 - A new edition. xxi, [3], 153, [3]pp., 2 large engraved folding plates, as often the case loosely inserted. Contemporary calf, rebacked, not recently, corners worn and some abrasions to the boards. Lower corner of the title-page torn without loss of text, and some light age browning to the paper in places. 4to. London: printed by W. Strahan, for Mrs Hogarth, and sold by her at her house in Leicester-Fields. 1772. Provenance: Ownership names at the head of the title-page of Peter Knell, 1778, and Mrs Welland, 29th August 1817. In 1932 the volume was "given to Michael Rothenstein as a mark of my affectionate sympathy" by Sydney Schiff. It was then presented to John & Myfanwy Piper by Rothenstein on October 1948. It seems to have returned to Rothenstein's possession as he later gave it to Philip Mathews in March 1954. First published in 1753, this is the only other 18th century edition to be published, and this copy bears a distinguished provenance. Sydney Schiff was a prominent art collector, mainly of modernist works, although satirised by Wyndham Lewis in The Apes of God. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Boston, 1772. 12mo. Antique-style three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Very good. The second Boyles edition of A VINDICATION..., both published in 1772, accompanied by the other two works, as issued. Wise has been called "the first great American democrat" for his argument, put forth in A VINDICATION, that the ultimate power of the churches should rest with the congregation and not with their ministers or an association of ministers. "The People...are the first Subject of Power...a Democracy in Church or State is a very honourable Government." This title is included in the Grolier AMERICAN HUNDRED on the strength of A VINDICATION. Howes calls it "the most authoritative defense of Congregational polity.

Nieuwe en Nauwkeurige Kaart van een gedeelte van Noord Amerika, Behelzende Nieuw Engeland, New York, Pensylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, een Stuk van Virginia, Kanada en Halifax ..

Utrecht: J. v. Schoonhoven, 1772. Copper-engraved folding map, engraved by Carel Jacob de Huyser, full period hand-colouring. Large and detailed map from a rare edition of Kalm's Travels. This map was published within the rare first Dutch edition of Kalm's Travels, the "most trustworthy description of Swedish settlement in 18th century Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania" (Howes). Between 1748 and 1749, Peter Kalm, a noted Swedish naturalist and student of Linnaeus, traveled throughout the northeast of America, specifically in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Canada, surveying the countryside, and recording notes on the inhabitants, the fauna, and the flora of the region. Returning to his native Stockholm, Kalm there published the first edition of his observations between 1753 and 1761, with Dutch and English editions soon to follow. The Dutch edition was the first edition to contain a map. The map principally depicts the region in which Kalm travelled, as far south as the Chesapeake and as far north as Quebec. However, the map extends quite a bit westward than would be expected, showing the Ohio River extending into present-day Kentucky. Interestingly, the map is among the earliest maps to identify petroleum in Pennsylvania, close to the location where oil was first discovered in Titusville in the mid-19th century. ACTS AND LAWS OF HIS MAJESTY'S ENGLISH COLONY OF CONNECTICUT IN NEW-ENGLAND IN AMERICA. [issued with]: THE CHARTER GRANTED BY HIS MAJESTY KING CHARLES II. TO THE GOVERNOUR, & COMPANY OF THE ENGLISH COLONY OF CONNECTICUT IN NEW-ENGLAND IN AMERICA

New London, 1772. Original suede calf, hinges broken. Folio. Library ink stamp on titlepage; chipping at edges, remnants of contemporary ownership inscription at head of title. Text lightly foxed, contemporary annotations and underlining throughout. Overall good. In a black cloth clamshell box. The Brinley copy, from his famous sale in 1880, of an important volume of early Connecticut laws, printed by one of the premier colonial American printers, Timothy Green. This is the reprint of 1768, after the first edition of 1750, followed by session laws for several years. The first volume of laws for the Connecticut colony was printed in Cambridge in 1673, followed by volumes of acts and laws in 1702 (Boston), 1709, 1715, and 1729 (all New London). The present collection of laws was authorized by the colonial legislature, but was not completed until 1753. This reprint of 1768 bears the original date of imprint on the titlepage, but differs entirely from the 1750-53 original by including a table of ten pages preceding the text. The table in the present copy has been annotated to reflect the session laws which are bound in after the initial body of the text (these are continuously paginated).

Doorway to Vatican Loggia

Rome, 1772. Copper engraving by Ottaviani after drawings by Savorelli and Camporesi, printed in light brown coloured ink with contemporary hand-colouring. Good condition. Three repaired tears to the left blank margin. Sight size: 31 1/8 x 18 1/4 inches. A highly decorative print from the famous "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano" series, with contemporary colouring of the highest quality from the golden age of the hand-coloured print. A very fine image from the first part of a work titled "Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano" depicting the decorative work executed by Raphael and his assistants between 1518-1519 in the Vatican. This remarkable print, one of the first to be published of the decoration of the Logge on the main storey of the Vatican apartments, was probably planned as early as 1760, but was not executed until between 1772 and 1776. The project as a whole was carried out by the painter Gaetano Savorelli, the draughtsman Ludovico Teseo, the architect Pietro Camporesi, and the engravers Giovanni Ottaviani and Giovanni Volpato. The plate is remarkable not only as the first important visual record of Raphael's work, but also for the quality of the hand-colouring - the work on this image is, in our opinion, some of the greatest to be produced in Europe during the whole of the eighteenth century: the golden age of the hand-coloured print. The whole series was of importance not just for the size and magnificent colouring of the prints, but also because of the influence they had on contemporary taste. The decision was made to "borrow" elements from Raphael's Vatican tapestries and insert them where the original frescoes were in too poor a state to be legible. The finished plates therefore represented an amalgam of design elements presented with a crisp freshness of colour that held enormous appeal and stimulated the taste for the "grotesque" in the neo-classical period.         The frugal housewife: Or, complete woman cook.

Fourth American edition (following the London and Boston first editions of 1772) of this landmark work of early British cookery. Not much is known about Carter herself, but her emphasis on a variety of tasty, accessible gravies and sauces has stood the test of time. Although in its initial U.S. appearances, the Frugal Housewife was strictly oriented towards British cuisine and ingredients, it was later adapted and expanded for American housewives, and portions of the original publication directly formed the basis for the first American-authored cookbook: Amelia Simmons's American Cookery. The work includes chapters on pickling and preserving and on homemade wines, and is illustrated with two engraved plates that depict trussing techniques for cooking fowls and hares. Provenance: Flourishing old signatures of "J. Lowry" to pastedown and title-page.

NACHRICHTEN VON DER AMERIKANISCHEN HALBINSEL CALIFORNIEN: MIT EINEM ZWEYFACHEN ANHANG FALSCHER NACHRICHTEN

Mannheim, 1772. Small octavo. Modern half vellum and marbled boards, spine gilt. A bit of light age toning and an occasional light fox mark. Three small purple ink spots in lower portion of map. Near fine. First printing of this rare and important account of Lower California by the German Jesuit, Jacob Baegert. Baegert lived in Baja California for a period of seventeen years (1751-68) and spent most of his time at the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga, leaving after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He provides some important details on the culture of the Indians of Baja California, including the Pericues, Guiacuras, and Cochiemes. Part one is an overview of California, its climate and products; part two describes the inhabitants; and the third part contains an account of the introduction of Christianity to California. Wagner states that the German Jesuits were especially dissatisfied toward the end of the Jesuit regime in California, and Baegert's bitterness is evident in his book: "...it was a land full of ferocious beasts and even more ferocious Indians, the soil was poor, the water undrinkable and there was no fuel to be had." The fine and important map was made by fellow Jesuit Ferdinand Consak, and is described by Streeter as "most helpful in giving the location of the many Jesuit missions in Lower California. It also shows the route along the west coast of Mexico followed by Baegert in going to California in 1751 and his route out in 1768, after the expulsion of the Jesuits." The top right corner of the territory (present-day Arizona) is labeled, rather ominously, "Los Apaches Barbari." The excellent plates, which were apparently not issued with all copies, depict male and female California Indians. A prime early account of Baja California, with an important map and plates of the region.

The History of the Late War in North-America, and the Islands of the West-Indies

London: Printed for W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1772. Large quarto. (11 1/4 x 9 inches). 1p. errata at back. 18 folding engraved maps. Contemporary calf, covers bordered with a gilt double fillet, expertly rebacked to style, spine in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, the others with an overall repeat decoration in gilt The best contemporary account of the French and Indian War, justly celebrated for its cartography and textual content, and one of the great rarities of colonial Americana: complete with all maps and the elusive errata leaf. Virtually all of Mante's account relates to the war in North America, with detailed narratives of Braddock's campaign and the other frontier and Canadian campaigns of the conflict. The work is particularly desirable for its contemporary descriptions of Pontiac's War, a campaign in which the author participated as Major of Brigade to Colonel Dudley Bradstreet. In addition, the introduction includes an interesting account of young George Washington's escape in 1753 from assassination by an Indian who acted as his interpreter and guide. Mante evidently took great care to gather information that was both historically and cartographically accurate for the present work. The maps are praised by all bibliographers as being by far the best relating to the war, and include several seminal maps which are the most accurate produced to that time. They comprise: 1) Fort Beau Sejour, & the adjacent Country Taken Possession of by Colonel Monckton 2) Lake Ontario to the Mouth of the River St. Lawrence 3) [Map of Lake George and vicinity] 4) A Plan of Fort Edward & Its Environs on Hudsons River 5) Communication Between Albany & Oswego 6) Attack on Louisbourg [by Amherst & Boscawen] 7) The Attack of Ticonderoga [by Major General Abercromby] 8) Plan of Fort Pitt or Pittsbourg 9) Guadaloupe 10) Attack on Quebec [by Wolfe & Saunders] 11) A Sketch of the Cherokee Country 12) The River Saint Lawrence from Lake Ontario to the Island of Montreal 13) A Plan of the Attack upon Fort Levi 14) River St. Lawrence from Montreal to the Island of St. Barnaby ... & the Islands of Jeremy 15) A View of the Coast of Martinico Taken by Desire of Rear Adml Rodney 16) Part, of the West Coast, of the Island of Saint Lucia 17) Plan of the Retaking Newfoundland [by Colville & Amherst] 18) Attack of the Havanna [by Albemarle & Pococke] Sabin writes of this great rarity: "Copies with all the maps are scarce. It is probable that but few were printed, though the large and beautiful plans and military maps (which gave it so great a value), must have made its production a work of much expense."         The Frugal Housewife, or Complete Woman Cook: Wherein the art of dressing all sorts of viands, with cleanliness, decency, and elegance, is explained in five hundred approved receipts to which are prefixed various bills of fare, for dinners and suppers in every month of the year; and a copious index to the whole

Boston: re-printed and sold by Edes and Gill, in Queen Street 1772 - FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. This is the second cookbook printed in America, preceded only by the similarly rare The Compleat Housewife printed in Williamsburg in 1742. Carter’s Frugal Housewife was one of the “enduring classics in the American marketplace, reprinted in American cities into the 1830s” (Snell). Printed from the London edition with alterations, The Frugal Housewife strongly influenced the first cookery book by an American author, Amelia Simmons’s American Cookery (1796). Simmons copied entire passages almost word for word from Carter. This first American edition of The Frugal Housewife, printed without a date, was advertised by Edes & Gill in the Boston Gazette as “this day Published” on 2 March 1772. Edes & Gill are best remembered as the most important printers in Boston during the American Revolution. In 1773, one year after publishing this cookbook, they and their newspaper, the Boston Gazette, played a crucial role in sparking the Boston Tea Party. For this cookbook they turned to another patriot, Paul Revere, famed as a silversmith and engraver. Paul Revere engraved two plates on copper to illustrate this work. Revere referred to his work in his Day Book on January 20, 1772, where he wrote: “Mesr. Edes & Gill Dr. To Engraving a Copper plate for coocrey [sic] Book & 500 prints 2-14-0.” Revere evidently engraved a single plate of copper with both illustrations. A fabulous provenance. This book bears the apparently otherwise unknown book label of Sally Parsons dated 1774. Women’s book labels on American books of this interest and period are of the greatest rarity. VERY RARE. No copy appears in the book auction records of the past 100 years, apart from an example lacking nine leaves including the title. In 1954 Goodspeed’s offered a copy with a portion of the title in facsimile—the only copy we have traced in the trade. Only four research libraries have copies (Library of Congress, Harvard, Brown, and American Antiquarian Society) and The Frugal Housewife is lacking from almost all of the great cookery collections. Seven copies are known worldwide: 1. American Antiquarian Society 2. Harvard 2 leaves short and likely supplied 3. Library of Congress lacking frontispiece plate 4. John Carter Brown frontispiece plate imperfect 5. Ross County Historical Society, Chillicothe, Ohio title-page imperfect 6. Private collection lacking 9 leaves incl. title 7. The present copy 12mo. [12], 166 of 168 pp., final leaf O6 in facsimile. 2 engraved plates. 18th-century sheep. Spine rubbed, front hinge starting at top. Light toning, small tear without loss to title. Generally in excellent condition, a remarkable survival, especially given the subject matter. Provenance: Sally Parsons 1774, with book label reading “The Property of Sally Parsons. 1774.” with decorative border on front paste-down. References: Evans 12348.
