An enquiry into the practice and legality of pressing by the King's Commission: founded on a consideration of the methods in use to supply the fleets and armies of England. From the earliest period of the English laws and history, to the present time.

London: J. Almon. 1772. 8vo., (4) + 60pp., including the half-title, contemporary marbled boards, neatly rebacked in calf, spine lettered in gilt. A very good copy indeed. First edition. Although Britain was not at war in 1772 - the Seven Years' War had ended in 1763 and the American War would not commence until 1775 - naval recruitment by press-gangs was still continuing, the current orders to that effect being included in the present Enquiry.> 'By the Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of Great-Britain and Ireland, &c. and of all his majesty's Plantations, &c. In pursuance of his majesty's order in council, bearing date the 14th day of September 1770, we do hereby impower and direct you to press so many seamen, seafaring men, and persons whose occupations and callings are to work in vessels and boats upon rivers, as you shall be able, in order to serve on board his majesty's ships, giving to each man so impressed, one shilling for prest-money.' A few years later, however, by an Act of 1774, forced recruitment of Thames watermen employed by fire insurance companies, the masters and mates of merchant vessels, and a proportion of men in each collier, would all be exempted.

Partie De L'Amerique Septentrionale, qui comprend le Canada, la Louisiane, le Labrador, le Groenland, la Nouvelle Angleterre, la Floride &c

Paris 1772 - Map. Engraving with original outline coloring. Two sheets joined. Image measures 22 5/8 x 17 inches. Nice early edition of Bonne's Eastern part of North America, with the name Canada prominently featured in the center of the Great Lakes. Two separate maps have been professionally joined and line up well to show the region in detail during the beginnings of the American Revolution. Some foxing near the scale but otherwise a good example. Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. He served as Hydrographer to France, and during his term, he produced a numbered of detailed and useful maps, particularly of coastal regions. His work is often devoid of decorative cartouches and compasses roses and marks a turn in European mapmaking away from decoration toward technical mapping.

The European Part of the Russian Empire with Several Countries that are the Theatre of the Present War between the Turks and the Russians / The Asiatic Part of the Russian Empire with the adjacent Coast of North America

Robert Sayer, London 1772 - Map. Copper plate engraving with original outline hand coloring. Image measures 18 3/4 x 51" This large scale map of the Russian Empire covers the European as well as the Asian portions of Russia. Extends from the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea east to include an unusual mapping of Kamchatka, and beyond to the speculatively mapped Alaskan Peninsula of North America. Includes Novaya Zemlya in the Arctic. Includes parts of neighboring China, Poland and parts of Scandinavia. Intricately detailed, notes numerous town, with topography beautifully rendered in profile. Based on d'Anville's map, perhaps the most interesting feature is the mapping of the largely unexplored northeast portion of Asia. The mysterious Company's Land or "Land of the Company according to the Dutch" and "Land seen by Jean de Gama" as well as the Strait of Vries are identified. Company's Land and Gamma Land were considered to be the early mappings of the Kurin Islands discovered by Maerten de Vries and Cornelis Jansz Coen in 1643. They believed that these islands were part of America, which was separated from Asia by the Strait of Vries. In 1729, Bering finally debunked their myth, but the islands appeared in maps for another 50 years. Bering's Island is identified, where the great Arctic explorer ultimately died in 1741. The conjectural mapping of North America includes the note "Some pretend that this Land may be seen from Bering's Island. The "Present War between the Turks and the Russians" mentioned in the title refers to the Russo-Turkish wars fought between the 16th and 20th century, the longest series of conflicts in the history of Europe. Printed on two sheets, joined together (as issued). In very good condition with minor foxing. Some wear and toning along folds. Edge wear. Robert Sayer (1725-1794) was an important English publisher of maps, portraits, and nautical engravings. Partnering with John Bennett around the 1760s, the two published the works of well-known cartographers such as Kitchen, Jefferys, Belling, d'Anville and others. This beautiful, large-scale map is an impressive example of his work.

        Opera

'Writing Royal' 4to., pp. [ii], 200, 221-372 (as usual). Occasional scatterings of very light foxing, but generally clean. Red calf, contemporary boards with later but sympathetic gilt spine; both boards heavily gilt in the herringbone style with borders and diamond-shaped centrepieces, suggesting a Scottish binding. Marbled endpapers, cloth hinges. In rebacking the binder has employed a French joint, seemingly to correct the original structure and give a better square at the foredge; the look is a little unusual, with a deep groove at the joint, but the work is neatly and skillfully done. Some slight splits to tail-cap, a few small scrapes to upper board, corners repaired but a very good, attractive copy.A2 is a cancel, H3 a cancelland; misnumeration and other errors as usual. Also available in 12mo., this 4to. version was priced on publication at a guinea, though copies were advertised for sale at 18s. on 9th July 1773; 780 copies remained in stock in 1775. Dibdin describes this edition, based on Coustelier's 1743 production, as 'very beautiful', though 'not esteemed for accuracy'.

        The Poems

by W. Bowyer and J. Nichols, and sold by J. Dodsley, London 1772 - Fine mezzotint frontispiece portrait by Fisher after Pond. 4to. [300 x 240 x 42 mm]. xi, [i], 380 pp. Bound in contemporary stained calf, the covers with a border of a single gilt fillet and a decorative pattern created by the application of a stencil during the staining process. The spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second on a red goatskin label, the others tooled in gilt and including a large triple-headed flower tool, edges of the boards tooled with a gilt roll, green edges, comb-marbled endleaves. (Joints cracked at head and foot and rubbed, corners and headcaps worn, the tooling on the spine partly corroded). With the first blank leaf (with off-setting from the final page of the copy placed on top of it in the printing house). A very good clean copy of this handsome and typographically admirable edition, with the fine mezzotint portrait. A London 8vo edition and a Dublin 12mo edition were published in the same year. The binding is highly unusual, though not unique. The covers have been stained a dark brown, with a stencil applied to the borders to create a contrasting lighter-coloured decorative knot-work pattern. The same method, and apparently the same stencil, was also used on a set of the Baskerville Addison (1761) last seen in the basement of Maggs Bros. Both examples have green edges - a characteristic feature of Irish bindings, though both this volume and the Addison have English provenances. Early Joliffe bookplate, and by descent to Lord Hylton of Ammerdown House, Somerset. [Attributes: First Edition]

        De Rerum Natura.

Birmingham: Johannis Baskerville,, 1772. Libri Sex. Quarto (295 x 234 mm). Near-contemporary polished calf, spine gilt-tooled in compartments with titles direct, boards bordered with floral gilt roll, gilt-ruled board edges, gilt-rolled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, red speckled edges. Splitting and a little worming to the joints at spine ends but both boards holding strong, ends and corners a little worn, a few other marks and scratches to calf, some very minor spotting to front and rear leaves, but a very good copy indeed. First Baskerville edition, finely printing the Latin text of Lucretius's radical work On the Nature of Things, a philosophical poem written to explain Epicurean philosophy to a Roman audience in the 1st century BC. This copy, which is notably unrestored (surviving copies are usually heavily dilapidated or rebacked), has an appealing pedagogic gift inscription to the title page, "Charles Thomas Coryndon Luxmoore, St John's Coll. Camb., ed dono. Dr. Keate. Eton", and bears the amorial bookplate of Luxmoore to the front pastdown. Keate was Eton's longest-serving headmaster (teacher from c.1797, headmaster 1809-34), who numbered Gladstone among his students. He was memorably pictured by Kinglake as "little more (if more at all) than five feet in height, and was not very great in girth, but within this space was concentrated the pluck of ten battalions. You could not put him out of humour, that is out of the ill-humour which he thought to be fitting for a Head Master." The recipient was the Rev. Charles Thomas Coryndon Luxmoore (1793-1863), who became the vicar of Guilsfield, on Powys, Wales.

Condé held the preeminent post of Grand Maître de France in the courts of Louis XV and Louis XVI before the French Revolution forced him into exile.Joseph Raulin was the “eminentÂ… physician ordinary to King [Louis XV], and censor royal, and was aggregated to several literary societies in France, to the Arcadi at Rome, and the Royal Society of London. The French government employed him in drawing up several treatises on popular medical topics, which he wrote in a clear and neat style, and in a luminous method. Of these wereÂ…. Traite des maladies des femmes en couche, Traite analytique des eaux minerales en general [this work]” and other notable studies, primarily in obstetrics and gynecology (Aiken, et al., General Biography VIII:470). This work is among those in which Raulin “tried to classify the nervous disorders of the ladies he treated at the court of Louis XVÂ… and used the expression of the period—vapors—to describe what would later be known as hysteria” (Bogousslavsky, Frontiers of Neurology, 7). A subsequent volume to this work was authored by Raulin and published in 1774. With woodcut engraved initials, head- and tailpieces. Text in French. Blake, 372. At the fall of the Bastille in the French Revolution he went into exile and avoided the fate met by Louis XVI and others of the Bourbon monarchy.Text fresh with light scattered foxing, faintest embrowning to several leaves, minimal rubbing to bright gilt boards.         The Art of War ART MILITAIRE DES CHINOIS, OU RECUEIL D'ANCIENS TRAITÉS SUR LA GUERRE (The Art of War)

Paris, 1772 The first edition in any Western language(French) - virtually unknown in the West until this edition reached European readers. An English translation wouldn't be seen for another 138 years. Translated by Jean Joseph Marie Amiot (1718-1793) –a Jesuit missionary to Beijing and close confidant/translator to the Chinese Emperor Hongli(1711-1799). Critically important to the course of world civilization, its reverberations are still felt today.***** The spirit of book collecting lives in the noble desire to grasp written works that influenced humanity and thereby the course of history. This work has the merit of direct and tangibly consequential impact. With many book descriptions touting the gravitas of this and that, it's hard to filter through the hype. To be fair, there is generally some kernel of justifiable hype to them; many have resulted in deep intellectual and/or emotional awakenings that altered people's behavior. However, this book directly affected the lives and deaths of millions of our forbears. How so?***** Conflict has steered the course of human history in brutal and consequential ways – shaping whole regions and swaths of people. See what's happening in the Middle East right now and the cascading effect it's having throughout the entire world as just one easy, present example. Many of history's impactful military leaders - Napoleon, Mao Zedong, Pervez Musharraf, Ho Chi Minh, Colin Powell, and countless more - had their philosophies and/or field tactics informed by the knowledge in this book. You can draw pretty straight lines from their decisions and actions to our current world paradigm. On a less bloody note, Tzu has also influenced the world of business, sports, and academia.***** Religion is generally seen as having been the most influential non-biological driver of human events. The second tier of influence, if you will, belongs to science and philosophy – Isaac Newton, Adam Smith, and Karl Marx just to name a few whose works truly resulted in tangible actions by those they reached. Tzu's Art of War firmly belongs in this pantheon.***** This book checks all the boxes of collecting – historical weightiness, rarity, and aesthetic beauty. A complete copy with half-title and all 33 hand-colored engraved plates in a contemporary marbled sheep binding, with an attractively tooled spine and marbled endpapers/edges. Aside from minor rubbing to the binding, it's a gratifyingly nice copy and the only one currently for sale - rare in such nice shape as the dozen or so copies housed behind institutional walls exist in various conditions.

Elémens de musique théorique et pratique, suivant les principes de M. Rameau, éclaircis, développés et simplifiés Nouvelle édition revue, corrigée considérablement augmentée.

Lyon, Jean-Marie Bruyset, 1772, in 8°, de 2ff. ¶ cf. Gatherings Hh-Ii and Ll to end printed on lighter, brighter stock. Sale catalogue of the library of a great art collector: D'Aumont is best known as a collector of "objets d'art," in particular Chinese porcelain and Italian marble sculpture, which were dispersed 12 December 1783 et seq., apparently under duress. D'Aumont's son went ahead with the sales without the rest of the family's approval (SOURCE: Courcelles, J.-B. Presumably d'Aumont read French books almost exclusively: a more-than-cursory look through the 3,100 lots reveals only a handful of books in other languages (and these were almost entirely book auction catalogues in Latin), including the classics, of which he assiduously collected the best and most beautiful editions; many of these he had bound by Padeloup, who the Duke must have kept very busy. There are relatively few books in the collection dated earlier than 1700, and the scatter of sixteenth-century books tend to be "romans." It is not surprising that the Duke's collection contains numerous bibliographical works and book auction catalogues (in sixteen lots there are seventeen of them), including the major sales of M. Charles du Fay (1725), M. l'Abbe d'Orleans de Rothelin (1746), and Madame la Marquise de Pompadour (1765). There are numerous art auction catalogues and catalogues raisonnes; the library was rich in art and architecture books. One finds a few duplicates in the catalogue; these, according to the "Avertissement" (p. iii) came from the library of another of the Duke's properties. This request was not only accorded in the most courteous manner, but the King of Spain conceived the idea of sharing the honor of a scheme devoted to the advancement of knowledge, and sent two of the most scientific officers of the Spanish navy to accompany the expedition. This party carried on a series of operations of unexampled difficulty and encountered hardships and sufferings which demanded the strength of the strongest constitutions and the energy of minds stimulated by a love of science. Much information was collected and published, which has been reproduced in other works on South America" (Cox). „Leur mission était de déterminer la figure et la grandeur de la Terre. Middlesex"; Scots in general and Lord Mansfield, Lord Chief Justice of England, in particular [Lord Mansfield gave an opinion that two numbers of the Whisperer were treason, putting Moore in danger of his life: when the Post Office was told not to send the Whisperer to the country, Moore offered to send complete sets carriage free].
